Product Description
Irish, Scottish, French and Flemish Traditions Merge in Celtic Cafe.Celtic Cafe, a new recording from Maggie's Music, sends an authentically fresh album of pan-European music into the deluge of Celtic releases this March. It is a lively evocation of a cafe at the crossroads of European culture, with Flemish carillon and Parisian musette music, clog and row dances from Belgium, & airs, jigs & reels from Ireland & Scotland.
The intermingling of Celtic and Northern European music has historic roots which are explored in the album. Its centerpiece, the Napoleon Suite, is a 16-minute evocation of the repertoires of mercenary soldiers who fought at Waterloo in Belgium, the crossroads of Europe. The suite binds together such traditional tunes as Will You Go To Flanders,Wellington's Coming and Bonaparte's Retreat introduced by an impressionistic collage of pipes and battle sounds created by producer Bobby Read.
Special guests include: Bonnie Rideout on Scottish fiddle & viola; Mark Hillmann, uilleann pipes; Bobby Read, woodwinds & soprano sax; Dwight Purvis, French horn; Ralph Gordon, bass; Dave Wiesler, piano; Andrea Hoag, fiddle and Paddy League on percussion.

Album Description
Brian FreemanÕs fourth recording "Can You Hear Me" features 12 original songs performed on guitar, mandolin, and vocals. The songs are melodic and choruses catching. They emphasize the importance of friends, family and community, written in a timeless style reminiscent of traditional Celtic songs. They take you on a journey back through childhood ("Can You Hear Me" and "No Place Like Home") and to middle age ("Time Marches On"), through the joy of birth ("Charmed") and the realization of death ("Crossing Over"), through the emotions of envy ("Grass is Greener"), and the need for recognition ("One Hand Clapping"). He acknowledges his loved ones ("Do You Know") and friends and neighbors ("You Are There" and "People in my Village") and the various stage of love ("Love Through The Years").
"Can You Hear Me" is a portrait of life presented with sensitivity, poetry, and vivid in detail - it is a passage through one life and all our lives acknowledging what is important in this exquisite fabric of living.
Interwoven into the delicate threads are silken melodies, binding bass lines, and guest soloists on Celtic harp, oboe, bagpipes, pennywhistle and synthesizer.

If you can find this CD--GRAB IT!.......2007-07-26
"Overgate" talks about a young farm boy who goes to the red light district and ends up in quite an escapade.
"Jeely Piece Song" is a protest song about the urbanization of Glasgow, but who'd have thought that lunch delivery problems would cause such a song?
"Burke and Hare" talks about the Edinburgh grave robbers who supplied bodies for Dr. Knox at the medical college.
Of course, there's my favorite, "The Old Woman and Her Cat", which Miller dedicates to all the 'demented cat lovers' out there.
This is one CD I listen to often. It's highly listenable and cheering.
