Amazon.com essential recording

The voice of Edith Piaf carries with it perhaps more national identity than that of any other recorded artist in the world. Tiny, frail, and tragic in her life, Piaf brought French identity to the rest of the world in a way that was understandable to all. Known as "the Little Sparrow" in her country, her voice was strong, bold, and passionate, even as she grew more infirm. The archetypical torch singer, she had massive popular success with songs like "Milord," "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien," and "La Vie, L'Amour," included here with 18 other classics. While this is a great compilation of some of her best material, the complete lack of enclosed notes or biographical material may frustrate those not familiar with her fascinating career. However, the work of one of the most original songbirds of all time speaks loud and clear for itself. --Derek Rath

5 out of 5 stars The more you listen, the more you love.......2007-08-02

I have been a fan of Edith Piaf for about 15 years when I first "discovered" her. Although I have been to visit her grave in Paris some time ago, for some strange reason I had not personally purchased her music until now. The more I listen to this CD, the more fascinated I have become - her voice and the sheer power of it is so poigniant! Listening to her while driving my convertible on a lovely summer evening is just the best. I have purchased this CD to send to my son who is in the military, a multiple time Iraq veteran and recently commissioned officer - he speaks fluent French and I have told him that altho I know he will understand the words much better than I do, there is no mistaking the sentiment and meaning of every song she sings. I highly recommend this CD!

Review
"The African Diaspora: A musical Perspective explores the relationship of music to the emergence of African Diaspora sensibilities in the late twentieth century in a nuanced and refreshing way, and will reward repeated readings. The volume will provide valuable insights to scholars who teach or conduct research in African/African Diaspora studies, anthropology, cultural criticism, or musicology."
–Frank Gunderson, Florida State University,Notes, September 2004

Book Description

In eleven original essays, this collection examines such diverse musics and issues as the blues aesthetic and the African diaspora in jazz performance; different versions of the 1939 song "Mbube," also known as "The Lion Sleeps Tonight"; the globalization of jazz from an insider's perspective; the power of women in the popular wassoulou music of Mali; the mamaya repertory of Guinea in the 1930s and 40s; Yoruba folk opera; traditional Ewe music as taught by the Dagbe Cultural Institute in Ghana; the role of militarism in Haitian vodou music; musical revivals and social movements in contemporary Martinique; and the role of African diaspora in the music and statements of jazz drummer Art Blakey. The contributors in this volume address why music claims such pride of place in the African diasporic population, and to provide particular examples of the interweaving of the local and global in the lives of musicians and their audiences.

This CD is a great overview of the best hits of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Alot of great and familiar songs like Sherry, December 1963, Big Girls Don't Cry, etc. CD art has great pictures and a history of the group. There are also 3-4 songs done by Frankie Valli as a solo artist, like the popular song "Grease". If you like Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons or you're just beccoming interested in them, this is a great CD to have.

If you have fond memories of the 60's, and even if you don't, this music will make you sing! These songs were in the foreground and the background of our lives in those simpler times. I saw "Jersey Boys" on Broadway and this brings back that incredible sentimental journey back.
Listen and smile.

5 out of 5 stars I love the music on this disc.......2007-07-14

Les Paul and his wife Mary Ford are legends in jazz music. My favorite track on this disc is "I'm Sitting On The Top Of The World." Nobody could play the electric guitar as masterfully as Les Paul. Mary Paul's voice is so sensual on the track "I'm A Fool To Care." I love this track. "Tennessee Waltz" and "Vaya Con Dios" are classic romantic tunes. These tracks makes me think of someone special. "In The Mood" is another excellent song that puts me in a great mood. "Bye Bye Blues" is an uptempo track that stands out as one of the best here. "I Really Don't Want To Know" is a pretty song. I love the tenderness in Mary Ford's voice on this track. This disc is filled with great music.

spanning several label changes, were Billboard Top 40 hits and are probably now as identifiable as the national anthem to anyone with radio or TV access. The fact that the tracks aren't in chronological order helps make for a fresh listening experience, as does the crisp digital sound. And yet these songs--even those that are more than four decades old--always sound strangely fresh and will likely remain so as long as there are beaches, young people, and that symbolic season of freedom and dreams. Which is to say that the title here passes the "truth in advertising" test. Perfect for those casual fans not yet ready to spring for the individual albums, Sounds of Summer is in many ways a better representation of this legendary band's art than Elvis' 30 No. 1 Hits and The Beatles 1 were of the King and the Fab Four. --Bill Holdship

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Beach Boys get their 1.......2007-08-04

We have the Beatles to thank for the Elvis Presley 30 # 1 hits and now the Beach Boys Sounds of Summer. That's fine by me because this is the best Beach Boys compilation I've seen. It covers all the Top 40 hits, including slightly obscure hits like "Do It Again" and "Darlin," which at least I never hear on the radio.

The CD isn't chronological, but consists of mini-sets like three Pet Sounds songs in a row, a few surfing songs in a row, and so on. The harmonies sound brilliant and the songs still hold up 40 years later; even Kokomo sounds good in this context, and that's nothing to sneeze at. If, like me, you lack a Beach Boys greatest hits, then this is certainly the one to get. The remastering sounds wonderful and brings out the harmonies. Listen with headphones!

5 out of 5 stars The Very Best of the Beach Boys.......2007-07-27

We loved the CD. We had been looking for a good collection and we found it. Loved the price too!

5 out of 5 stars Summer music is here --- again!.......2007-06-14

These are summer classics and to hear them again is a such a joy! It brings you back to the 60's (for those of us who remember the 60's). I bet the young people of today would get a kick out of listening to a pristine version of Surfin' USA, I Get Around, and some of the other classics.

Don't Worry, Baby is a personal favorite but it's the mono version. However, listening to it on a nice set of speakers makes it sound like it's in stereo. I would have liked "Warmth of the Sun" included in this collection but hey, 30 of the best Beach Boys songs on one CD, I'm not complaining!

5 out of 5 stars The perfect Beach Boys collection for casual fans.......2007-06-14

Casual fans will find this to be the ultimate collection of the Beach Boys music as it contains all of the band's top 40 hits. 30 classic tunes from 1962 all the way to 1988 are here on a single CD with top-notch sound quality, rare photos of the band, and a nice essay inside the CD booklet. All of the early surf classics that everyone knows are presented along with lesser-known later hits that are just as worthy such as "I can hear music", "Do it Again", "Wild Honey", and "Getcha Back".

However, since this CD contains only the band's "top 40 singles", serious fans will find this collection a little less appealing since some of the Beach Boys' best music {including many good recordings after 1966} never made the top 40. Several of these songs such as "Let him run wild", "Catch a Wave", "Warmth of the Sun", and "Girls on the Beach" are not included in this otherwise excellent collection. Much of this worthy lesser-known material has just been reissued on the new highly recommended compilation "The Warmth of the Sun".

This is only a minor issue of course since "Sounds of Summer" is surely one of the most comprehensive greatest hits collections ever released by any band. ALL of the Beach Boys hit singles are here on one disc, which makes this an essential CD for every Beach Boys fan.

5 out of 5 stars Must have.......2007-06-13

If you're not one that already owns every Beach Boy record, this is one that you'll want to pick up. With 30 tracks it's a great survey of the Beach Boys from way back then up until some of there more recent stuff. If you're not familiar with the Beach Boys, you'll probably be amazed at the number of tracks on this CD that you've heard before and are familiar with, but didn't quite make the connection that all that good stuff came from the Beach Boys.

Book Description

The Cultural Study of Music is an anthology of new writings that will serve as a basic textbook on music and culture. Increasingly, music is being studied as it relates to specific cultures-not only by ethnomusicologists, but by traditional musicologists as well. Drawing on writers from music, anthropology, sociology, and the related fields, the book both defines the field-i.e., "What is the relation between music and culture?"-and then presents case studies of particular issues in world musics. This book would serve as an introductory textbook for the cultural study of music, an area that is increasingly being taught at the upper-level undergraduate and graduate level. Plus it would appeal to scholars in all areas of music, reflecting the latest and most up to date thinking on the complex issues surrounding how music and culture interrelate.

Album Description

One of the most enduring acts in American music, Peter Paul And Mary both defined and transcended the 1960s folk revival. The trio's passionate commitment to peace and social justice made them the conscience of an era as they soulfully communicated political concerns through music in an unprecedented way. At the same time that they reached millions with their social message, they acheived phenomenal mass popularity.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The penultimate collection!.......2007-07-31

This is truly the penultimate collection of songs by Peter, Paul & Mary. Having grown up listening to their music, I can safely say that this is the album that you'll ever need to appreciate the beautiful melodies and breathtaking songs of this well loved American trio. All the songs that made them who they are are here and my personal fave is the wedding song that is so moving. Get this CD while you can and forget all the other best of collections out there, this is the one you really need!

3 out of 5 stars Not much extra.......2007-07-27

Their 10 Years album had most of the great songs already. This album doesn't add that much more.

5 out of 5 stars The Very Best of Peter, Paul & Mary.......2007-07-27

We loved the CD. It was a wonderful collection exactly what we were looking for. The shipment came quickly and the price was great!

5 out of 5 stars Pure Folk.......2007-07-21

Loved this CD. I grew up listening to this group and they sound wonderful on this record. "I Dig Rock and Roll Music" and others make this a great listen. Mellow out with P, P, & M.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent for country song lovers.......2007-07-05

Songs are of high standard. However, the quality of the CD is substandard to the ears of an audiophile fan. Background of the recordings has a bit of noise, not absolutely clear. Overall, a good CD for a sunny day.

5 out of 5 stars Great album to be a cornerstone of a music library.......2007-03-07

Confession time. I never grew up with the Eagles. Until I watched the live reunion DVD at a high end home audio shop, I only knew the names and some of the songs.

This is a darned good album that spans The Eagles portfolio of songs. The live album has a more refined sound due to age and experience of the band members BUT, this is a benchmark hits album of the original recordings.

5 out of 5 stars They are all 5 star songs but..........2007-03-05

I will never get used to another Eagle's greatest hits album since that original one came out in early '76 since I got very accustomed to the perfect order in which those songs are played. I noticed that this newer version did not leave "Best Of My Love" as an ending song to the CD as it was on Greatest Hits 71-75 and on it's original album from '74 entitled: "The Border". In the case of "The Very Best Of the Eagles",they had 2 chances to put "Best Of My Love" at the end of a CD. Just like they had 6 chances on three different Journey compilations CDs to keep "Open Arms" an ending song to a CD as it was on 1981's "Escape". I guess I'm referring to the producers and or record company etc. After I bought the original "Eagle's Greatest Hits" that came out in early '76 (with it's perfect song list & sequence), all I ended up having to do was to buy two more studio albums ("Hotel California" and "The Long Run") and I had all the songs I needed. Now I have two DCC gold editions (Eagles Greatest Hits 71-75 and Hotel California) So, I've got 95 percent of their best stuff now. But for all of you that just want some Eagles songs and are not accustomed to the perfect order of the songs found on the original greatest hits CD (heard lots during our Bicentennial Year), you will probably be pleased with this CD set and with the songs that are included on it. I wouldn't blame you if you wanted it in fact as a career spanning CD set. But I'll personally never give up that perfect ordered original '76 edition of greatest hits for purposes of listening to straight through from start to finish.

Augmenting 1972's Greatest Hits with additional tracks, Best of... now stands as the preeminent one-disc introduction to the music of Simon & Garfunkel. Containing everything Greatest Hits offered except for the live version of "59th Street Bridge Song" (the original studio hit resurfaces here) and the incandescent "Kathy's Song," the updated retrospective boasts 20 tracks, in contrast to its predecessor's 14 selections. Added to the mix are the likes of "Hazy Shade of Winter," "The Only Living Boy in New York," "Song for the Asking," and "My Little Town," a one-off the twosome did five years after they ended their phenomenally successful partnership. Remastered from the original source tapes, Best of... also boasts far superior sound to the earlier hits collection. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars Feelin Groovy.......2007-07-26

Excellent Simon and Garfunkel compilation. Great showcase of the folk/rock duo. I'm not a big acoustic music fan, but I've got to say Simon and Garfunkel do it so well, specifically the guitar bits, that I really like their stuff. There's a whole bunch of good songs in this disc of 20 songs. Good value for fans. This CD is evocative of an era, the middle and late 60s, but most definitely enjoyable by those of us from generations after the Baby Boom.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-06-16

Simon & Garfunkel was an Icon of 1960's.Their music was a voice of the sixties. It was a voice that has never faced the sound of silence

This collection is a best of the duo's singles. this stuff is classics of the rock era. These 20 tracks have been remastered foir modern CD players and it sounds better than before

5 out of 5 stars Simply The Best.......2007-07-01

By far, the greatest Rock and Roll band of all time. Technically, you shouldn't buy this greatest hits CD as you will be missing out on too many great songs. What you should do is go and buy all 6 studio CDs with Morrison on vocals, then buy the Russian Import of the 2 Doors CDs post Morrison as they are excellent as well.

5 out of 5 stars the best hippie album ever.......2007-06-21

i cant say more then that im speechless

5 out of 5 stars Open this Door.......2007-06-20

This is an awesome Doors compilation, must have for any fan. The Doors music was unique: funky synethiser sound, maybe the first major band to make heavy use of it; they used it well. The Doors' lyrics are weird and fantastic, but in a cool way, not at all stupid. All the hits are on this 2-disc collection. Definitely a good value. You'll see why the Doors are a lasting piece of 60s culture.

The first clue to the sound of Avril Lavigne's third CD, The Best Damn Thing, comes in the form of her kickoff single, "Girlfriend," which is filled with singing, clapping, and cheerleader-style chanting. The song is quite a sonic contrast to her previous disc, Under My Skin, which was considered to be Lavigne's more mature follow-up to her 16 million-selling debut CD, Let Go. Like that debut, The Best Damn Thing will be largely and deeply embraced by teenage girls, and is packed with songs that will create enthusiastic sing-alongs in concert. There are a handful of numbers that will appeal to a wider audience; "Innocence" and disc closer "Keep Holding On" would both fit perfectly in a Gray's Anatomy episode, while the sultry message and solid harmonies in "Hot" will appease ears of many ages. Lavigne's husband, Sum 41 frontman Deryk Whibley makes an appearance as producer and instrumentalist on a handful of tracks; their union, however, seems to have bred more than love. "I Don't Have to Try" and "Everything Back But You" both have a frenetic pace and chorus that is so eerily Sum-like that if they weren't married, a copyright lawsuit might ensue. That aside, the record oscillates between lyrically acerbic fare ("One of Those Girls," "I Can Do Better") and fluffy sugar-pop melodies ("Contagious," "The Best Damn Thing") delivering far more spunk rock than punk rock. --Denise Sheppard

1 out of 5 stars Hey hey Avril Avril this is bad!.......2007-08-04

I looked up the songs from this album on youtube and listened to them. Avril, what were you thinking when making this album? She can't write songs for the life of her! They're terrible! Who's letting her make this run of the mill pop rock stuff? I mean the song "Girlfriend" was okay at best. I didn't love it, didn't hate it. It was just THERE. Sorry Avril fans but I have to give this a bad review. I give her credit for trying to be different or whatever but this album just doesn't cut it. I give this album an F!

3 out of 5 stars The Best Damn Thing Review.......2007-07-18

The first song rocks. Every single other song is so bad, I cannot believe it is the same artist. If she had any integrity, she would not even have recorded them.

3 out of 5 stars Hmmmmmm.......2007-07-16

Sort of disappointing. Different energy on this one, oh wait...she's happy now, and the music tells all. I enjoyed the fact that I could find solace in her music and curse men and the world all in one bitter lyric. We all can't be happy all the time and it seems it's getting harder to find people to sing about that. Oh well.

1 out of 5 stars "She's Like So Whatever".......2007-07-15

* I'm supposed to focus on the music, under the review guidelines. Having found little, I suppose I am free to focus on whatever I find more prevalent than actual music.

I listened to a few tracks of this, and had fun watching the video for Girlfriend.

Wasn't Avril Lavigne supposedly "anti-Britney", and supposedly "like Sid Vicious for the new generation" - when apparently, she didn't even know at that time who Sid Vicious was? That quote (in a 2002 Seventeen interview) links her to Punk.

She is an utter disgrace to Punk. She denies having ever said she was punk, but originally, she did say she was a skater-punk. Punk isn't about being a stuck-up motherf*cking princess (in her own words, no?). Punk also isn't about backtracking what you say about yourself/your music. But okay, maybe it's better to focus "on the music" instead, and not whether it's punk, or pop, or rock, or etc.

Music is supposed to come from the heart.

I suspect Avril Lavigne would be a lot less popular, if she didn't have her make-up, straight-ironed hair, and now preppy-wh*rish clothes (I wonder what her next makeover will consist of) - in glossy magazines, airbrushed album covers, and music videos where she indulges in being a "bad girl" (causing "trouble" in malls), and now seemingly, a bimbo (tell me how the hiphop, or whatever, dance scene at the end of Girlfriend, isn't "bimbotic", and how that doesn't make her like any other Britney/PCD/Beyonce out there).

However, if you do like Britneys and Rihannas, then go ahead and support the modern "music" industry!

PS: I'd give this album MINUS 10 stars, if I could.

Book Description
During the lifetime of Guillaume Du Fay (c. 1400-1474) the motet underwent a profound transformation. Because of the protean nature of the motet during this period, problems of definition have always stood in the way of a full understanding of this crucial shift. Through a comprehensive survey of the surviving repertory, Julie Cumming shows that the motet is best understood on the level of the subgenre. She employs new ideas about categories taken from cognitive psychology and evolutionary theory to illuminate the process by which the subgenres of the motet arose and evolved. One important finding is the nature and extent of the crucial role that English music played in the genre's transformation. Cumming provides a close reading of many little-known pieces; she also shows how Du Fay's motets were the product of sophisticated experimentation with generic boundaries.
