4 out of 5 stars The Best of Erick Satie.......2007-06-11

The reason I bought this product, is because I was familiar with the 3 Gymnopedies of Erick Satie and also another of his work: The Gnosiemme (I'm not sure about the spelling) No. 4. After listening to the CD I felt very happy with it because include both versions of the Gymnopedies, the Orchestral and the one for piano and of course the Gnosiemme No. 4 which I now like it very much. The pianist makes justice to Satie's work and if you like his work is a good buy.

5 out of 5 stars A forerunner to minimalism.......2007-04-13

Satie is a forerunner to minimalism. Each piece of his music is a beauty. He also had great influence on many famous composers and musicians in his age. This album is one of the best piano classical.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2006-07-07

Just a great collection from Erik Satie. I would highly recommend this one!

3 out of 5 stars Richard review of Best of Satie.......2005-09-02

The recording is well done. Eric Satie is not the type of music that many people will appreciate. I like his music and this particular recording.

5 out of 5 stars Got Satie?.......2005-07-27

... Well folks. This may be the perfect album to get started. This features some of the best-known works by the wierd and witty Erik Satie, including the Gymnopedies (both the original piano and the orchestrated versions), the Gnossiennes, just to name a few.

The performance done by pianist Klara Kormendi is relatively plain and simple, just as Satie might have wanted. Some of his music is actually not too difficult to play... A great CD at a budget price. Kudos to Naxos for a good performance at a good price.

Also, what I'm equally impressed is the fact that in this "appreciation" album, the listener will actually be listening to many "sets" of pieces. Some of those albums (Beethoven and Mozart for example) are mere collections of selected tracks, many just one movement of a large work, such as a symphony. In some you will only be listening to selected numbers of different large "sets" of pieces. In Chopin's for example one may listen only few of the 20+ nocturnes (No. 2 for example), 15+ waltzes, and 20+ mazurkas he wrote, so one would not feel complete listening to the whole "cycles" of short pieces. Satie, fortunatley, prefered using tiny sets of pieces, most of them only comprising of three movments each. Plus each piece is short. ALL of the three Gymnopedies. ALL of the six Gnossiennes. ALL of the three Sarabandes. ALL of the three nocturnes. One can already feel happy listening to couple "sets" within a single CD.

Once again, this may be the perfect album to get started with Erik Satie. And get ALL out of those pieces!!!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful set of orchestral music for an amazing price.......2007-08-05

I will admit that when I first ordered this 20 cd set from Amazon I was very skeptical and hesitant. I figured what kind of quality am I going to get for $16.97?! But when I got it in the mail and started listening to some of the cd's I was more than pleasantly surprised. The music contents on each is cd has the complete versions of the each song or theme. You know how a lot of cd sets just have the short versions or arrangemnts of songs to cut down on the price, but not on this set. Every cd runs anywhere from 1 hour to 2 hours of listening time. Even though the box set is called orchestral spectaculars if you like piano music there is a Liszt cd in the set with The Fantasy on Beethoven's The Ruins of Athens for piano, Malediction for piano and orchestra and Grande Fantasie Symphonique on Berlioz's Lelio for piano and orchestra. There is also a Rachmaninov in the set with his First Piano Concerto in F Sharp Minor and the original full length 30 minute version of his Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. Even if you listen to mostly piano music there are many versions based on them. For example, Brahms 21 Hungarian Dances that were written for solo piano, but in this set they are orchestrated. I had never heard the pieces like that before. It was nice to get a different perspective of the music. The same goes for Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition also written for piano, but here it is in a symphonic form and I enjoyed it just as much as the solo piano version. If you love opera, but are maybe someone that likes the orchestral part more than the singing there are many cd's in this set for that as well. There are 2 cd's of Wagner's music with my favorite prelude of all time Isolde's Love Death from Tristan and Isolde. Overtures from all of Rossini's and Rimsky Korsakov's operas. I think this cd would be a great place to start for someone who is new to classical music and doesn't want to spend a lot of money or if you love classical music as I do and want to hear new versions of your favorite pieces or just want to add to your cd collection you can do that for under $1.00 a cd. How many times have we all spent more than the price of this set for only one cd? I highly recommend this set. The sound quality and choices of music are excellent. Anyone who buys this will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars "Blasted" away.......2006-09-27

I am by no standards an expert on music, let alone organ music. I just purchased this CD because I love the sound of the organ, and wanted an album from a mix of artists before I started branching out to single composers. I would also consider myself an audiophile, only listening to high quality music with my portable headphone amplifier and Sennheiser HD-555's. Let me tell you, the quality is perfect, and the music is incredible! Such a full sound, it's *almost* as good as sitting in audience, only lacking the full body experience of organ music. I would recommend this to anybody looking to get a foot into the world of organ music.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2006-06-07

I happen to love organ music, even that tacky Saint-Saens
Third Symphony (with which this CD ends and just the third movement).

I grew up with E. Power Biggs, Virgil Fox, et al. and had never heard of Michael Murray (okay, it's been a while). I bought this delightful CD when it first appeared and before Amazon had been invented.

Upon hearing that most famous work with which Murray begins, I confess I was just this side of hysterical -- I was laughing with pure happiness. Murray's take on is it wonderfully over-the-top in the best possible sense. I have a son-in-law who is a musician and, indeed, does play the organ (i.e., if any of them have had pipes, I don't know, but I'm here to tell you, I don't want to hear ANY but pipe organs -- okay, I'm old).

At any rate, to hear this Toccata and Fugue played with such (carefully studied) abandon so tickled me, I called Brian (the son-in-law) and demanded that he listen while I put it on my stereo.

Now I'm going to send it to my son Bruce upon learning last night that he LOVES organ music. Who knew? He's 54 years old, for goodness' sake and never mentioned that little item before.

4 out of 5 stars For those who like BIG organ works.......2005-09-04

This CD concentrates on the big, showy organ pieces that organists love to play. As an organist myself, I find that such numbers are usually more fun to play than to hear. Fortunately, this CD is very listenable, and makes the case for both playing and listening to these works. I'd buy it again; maybe more telling, I'm looking for some of the music, so I can go play it!

5 out of 5 stars Pure Majestic Power!.......2003-07-20

Corey is right - this is an outstanding organ CD, one of the best I've heard. Murray plays some of the largest and most powerful organs on Earth, and uses the reed stops more than the usual organist to produce great effects and a wall of sound that are majestic in the extreme. The selections are all great virtuoso showpieces, and track #6 by Messiaen (Dieu parmi nous from La Nativite') is especially demonstrative of the great contrasts available in a large organ. The horizontal trumpets in this piece are predominant and very bright, contrasting with the snarling bass of the pedal organ.

A word of caution - this CD requires a capable stereo (think subwoofer) to sound its best. Trust me - if you listen to this CD on a good stereo and if you like organ music, you'll sit there with a big grin on your face and tears in your eyes as you listen to this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Performance by Murray.......2001-11-09

This is by far one of the best organ CD's I have ever listened to. The variety is very good overall. From the state trumpets at St. John's to the mighty organ of First Congregational Church, Murray provides nice registration on all of the organs sampled. The Finale from Saint-Saens No. 3 is awesome with the Philadelphia Orchestra under Eugene Ormandy,s direction. Murray provides his own notes on the organs and the pieces in the booklet that is included. This is some fine organ music!!

There's something for every Tchaikovsky lover on this disc. From Swan Lake to Onegin, many of Tchaikovsky's most-known melodies are on this disc. I'd have preferred more than an excerpt of the first movement of Piano Concerto No. 1, but this disc is a great introduction to Tchaikovsky's works.

5 out of 5 stars Not Something to Sleep To.......2007-05-04

if you had enjoyed this movie, with the dialoge streaming throughout the trippy music of his dreams, you would love this soundtrack. its beautiful and strange. i love it.

1 out of 5 stars Love the score and soundtrack but CD is incomplete.......2007-03-09

I bought this primarily for the Jean-Michel Bernard music. I was disappointed because the disc doesn't include alternate versions sans voice-overs. Many of these tracks have the actors' voices over the music. Wouldn't be such a problem for me as bonus tracks perhaps. Or have music sans voice-overs as bounus tracks. Either way there's room enough as the disc clocks in at just under 49 minutes. Would be cool too if they included the film mixes of the Willowz tracks. Their "Ulcer Soul" song sounded psychedelic while fading in, out, and under the other audio in the film. I rated the disc one star but better to rate it 4 as it does have pretty much what was in the actual soundtrack, including the lovely "Coutances."

5 out of 5 stars A better soundtrack than Eternal Sunshine!.......2007-01-10

I absolutely loved the music in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind and thought that there couldn't be a more fitting original score......until i saw The Science fo Sleep. I bought this album just days after seeing Michel Gondry's latest film because I immediately fell in love with the music. The original score to the film exactly reflects the atmosphere of a dream state, as do the songs with rathe rnonsensically sweet lyrics and a drowsy tone. I am a huge fan of film and perhaps moreso the music featured in them, and this montauge of imagination is really my cup of tea. I really encourage anyone who loves the atmosphere of a Gondry film to buy this soundtrack, it's a fabulous one.

5 out of 5 stars A perfectly surreal match for a fairly surreal movie.......2006-10-03

Jean-Michel Bernard is the man behind the music for this, the music of the latest Michael Gondry movie ("Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"). I had never heard of him before, but he happens to have a few movie scores under his belt, Gondry's "Human Nature" (2001) among them, along with a few other albums.

The sound he puts out reminds of a blend between that of the previous Gondry collaborator, Jon Brion, and the specific album that David Hirschfelder composed for the movie "Shine". He incorporates samples of dialogue from the movie with classical and jazz elements, resulting in an overall score that is a perfectly surreal match for a fairly surreal movie.

The album contains a couple of very nice tracks from The Willowz (they seem to be a personal favorite of Gondry), along with a Kool & The Gang song ("Steppin' Out") that break the "spell" in the music that otherwise flows much like a dream from track to track.

5 out of 5 stars Zzzzilousous.......2006-09-21

I have never slept as well as I slept while listening to this album. The sounds of crickets chirping and sea crashing against the rocks on the north shore of england allowed me to drift off into a land of bliss and serenity... i highly reccomend this album

5 out of 5 stars Menuhin: an Artist like no other!.......2006-08-23

This is a marvelous recording, for it captures the greatness that was Menuhin. It is mono, yet for those of us who actually listen to the performance not the sound discrepancies, this is a recording not to be missed. This recording introduced me to the sound of Menuhin, and his Bach interpretation is truly something beautiful, at once full of pathos and the structural clarity so needed in playing Bach. I do not share the above review that the Chaconne is uninspired, and while it may be romantically realized this does not detract but merely adds to its uniqueness. Our century is all about period instruments and fidelity to the score or the manner of the time, this is something relatively new in the history of music performance and should BY NO MEANS BE CONSIDERED DOGMA. That being said I praise the greatness of Bach (that Double Concerto is truly something beautiful and ethereal) and the mighty talent of Menuhin, and thank God for the chance to hear them both.

Those of us who are not artists should watch our tongues. Who are you, who does not create or invent, to pass judgement on those who are above us all in the realm of Artistic construction?

4 out of 5 stars Menuhin: romanticism, refinement, passion and pride!.......2005-12-22

Yehudi Menuhin has been the violinist with major sense of the refined playing. Somehow he represented the Renaissance 's artist. His serene temperament and sensitivity allowed him to play under the composer 's intentions and director as any other artist in the music. That excel virtue by itself is what it proves his fabulous readings of Bela Bartok under Dorati or his aristocratic Brahms under Wilhelm Fürtwangler, for instance. Maybe his major achievements be found out in the chamber music or intimate violin works such as The Mozart 's Violin Concertos or his memorable performances as director of the Bath 's Festival' s Orchestra.

The sumptuous, elegant and convincing phrasing of Yehudi Menuhin reached in this recording a particular apex. The artist is in top musical shape; Bach 's First and Second Violin Concertos are played under his teacher and close friend Georges Enesco; the First Concerto is played with admirable sense of noblesse. The Second one is widely known and the delicate performance is hued by notable details of modulation, the velvet tune and the accurate approach make of this recording a fundamental achievement in the career of this master.

Additionally we have Bach 's Double Concerto played by Enesco and Menuhin; a recording that by itself justifies the acquisition of this album.

The only serious problem resides in his Chaconne `s performance. Extremely stylized, played with excessive romantic approach and without ambition.

The absolute peak of his performances may be admired during his multiple appearances in Prades Festival, and once again the figure of Pau Casals as this untiring musical motivational spark plug that seemed to elevate the rank of performance of every one of his partners; this fact can be visibly observed since 1959 until the middle sixties.

An album of transcendent musical relevance for the actual generations and the musical newcomers of the present and the future.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic in all ways!.......2004-12-11

These are totally intense and firey peformances with Master and Disciple. Inspired interpretations and the rapt communion bewteen the artists is amazing.

The mono sound is excellent.

Indispensible for anyone's Bach collection!

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful music, poor sound quality.......2001-12-31

There is no doubt that Menuhin is a virtuoso. However, the recording quality of this work is very poor by today's standards. If you are specifically interested in Bach or Menuhin, I would recomend this recording; if clarity of sound interests you, one should look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars The Young Menuhin in All His Glory.......2001-07-11

These were all recorded when Menuhin was between ages 15-19. The Bach Double was done at age 15 with his teacher, the great Georges Enescu. It will take you about three minutes to get past the 1930s recording quality to appreciate the musicianship here. This one, though, is not for those who like "period recordings" -- this one is unabashedly modern, in a 1930s kind of way. Still, appreciate it for what it is, rather than for what it is not.

5 out of 5 stars Rare Satie.......2004-09-29

Although Satie's orchestral output was dwarfed by the number of his works for piano, it's unfortunate that these compositions have not been recorded more. "Parade" stands out in its use of sound effects (gunshots, typewriter) in addition to conventional orchestra. Bravo to Naxos for allowing us the opportunity to hear these pieces.

5 out of 5 stars A dream!.......2001-04-11

This record, a recommendation by Gramophone, is one of the best bargains, even from Naxos.

Parade is fun to listen as Gymnopédies in one of the best performances I have heard.

Th ballets are bizarre, and the music is so sugestive that you can "see" them.

Mr. Kaltenbach makes a correct reading and the Nancy orchestra rises to the top.

Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars One Of His Best.......2003-06-07

If one can get past the laughably bad Star Wars opening track, this album is a stunner. Though lacking the fluid continuity of his previous efforts, Tomita manages to select darker, more beautiful, and more moody pieces than before, creating an incredible dream-like atmosphere without resorting to the usual space-ship and "alien" sounds that tarnished The Planets and The Bermuda Triangle. His sound became larger, more ambient, and denser. The final Bach medley "The Sea Named Solaris" is Tomita's finest hour, and this album is a must for any fan or Tomita's work, or of electronic music. A flawed but still great work.

5 out of 5 stars Complete list of Tomita's classical albums..........2002-03-05

This CD is fantastic, but a big box set of every classical Tomita album would be even better. Most of the CDs out of print for years are absolutely fantastic. Four of his albums would fit two on one CD. Here's the complete list...

Snowflakes Are Dancing 1974 (11 Debussy pieces) The newly remastered CD is an audiophile recording, adds Prelude To The Afternoon of a Faun and is available for a good price.

The Bermuda Triangle 1979 (Sibelius: Valse Triste. And excerpts from... Williams: Close Encounters. Prokofiev: Romeo and Juliet, Scythian Suite, Symphonies 5 and 6, Violin Concerto 1. My favorite electronic CD.)

5 out of 5 stars IT'S WONDERFUL. HOW COME I'VE NEVER HEARD IT BEFORE?.......2007-05-25

was driving my car and this piece started to play on my radio. I was knocked out by the interplay between the orchestra and the piano. I've listened to many piano concerti before and I love; Liszt,Rachmaninoff,Beethoven and Bartok to name just a few. I found this composition to rate with any of these composers. I was bouncing with the syncopation of the play between the piano and the orchestra and the slow passages were bringing tears to my eyes.If a piece of music can get a reaction out of a listener, what more could you ask for? I can see why it would not be performed live,if either the pianist or the orchestra miss a beat, it's over! I wish some major pianists would record it, I'm sure it would receive more recognition and also Henry Litoff.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent recording.......2004-12-05

These are two fine piano concertos, and they are very well performed. The fourth is my favorite of the Litolff concertos. It was composed in the 1850s, but I think of Litolff more as a precursor to Rachmaninoff than, say, a contemporary of Schumann. The music is delightful, and Donohoe makes great use of the opportunity to show his talent.

Litolff is not a well known composer, but I assure those who may not have heard his works that they won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Concerto Symphonique.......2004-08-03

After listening to these two pieces, it's a mystery why Litolff's music ended up being mostly forgotten. It is well-crafted and needs a sensitive virtuoso for the piano part, for the piano roars in some places, whispers in others, and touches the heart in yet others.

The style of these pieces is quite different from some romantic piano concerti, where the piano is the star and the orchestra merely plays along. In these pieces, the piano and orchestra are equals, and the results are stunning.

I have listened to these pieces many times, and I still enjoy them very much. Hopefully they will find a place in the piano/orchestra programs of orchestras. These pieces need to be heard more often.

Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Lively Litolff........2002-04-23

Just like his "fellow L" Liadov, whose musical snuff box is a popular encore, Litolff is world famous for a single piece, the Scherzo of his 4th piano concerto, while the rest of his prolific output has sunken into obscurity. Yet, especially Litolff's piano concertos were extremely popular in their time and can still be considered only second to Liszt' duo among the prime representatives of the Concertos Symphoniques.

This disc is the first of a pair that Hyperion devoted to the four surviving Litolff concertos with Peter Donohoe as the soloist. Both the 2nd and 4th concertos are full of catchy themes and flashy piano passage work. Their main goal is to entertain in a decidedly please-please-me vein. While the 2nd concerto never gets more than skin deep, the 4th does have more musical substance. In both works the writing for both piano and orchestra is highly skilled and is at its best in the chamber music style parts, where Litolff is not that far off the slow movement of a work like Tchiakowsky's first.

The playing is top notch. Peter Donohoe is ideally suited for these works. He has a rock solid technique and approaches the works in a light and lively fashion. As a result the works never get boring or overbearing. The Scherzo of the 4th concerto, the Litolff landmark, gets a blazing performance, not just presto, but presto con fuocco. Litton and the Scots give flawlessly integrated support and Hyperion did a fine job in recording.

Warmly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Lilting Litolff.......2001-10-28

In the one hundred and thirty years since its composition, Litolff's fourth piano concerto has been recorded in its entirety only twice. One has the feeling that this excellent disc from Hyperion is about to change all that.

Henry Litolff's story is a fascinating one. Born the son of a musician, Henry was, as an adolescent, impressed into working at a piano factory. One day, while demonstrating a piano to a customer, he was "discovered" as a talent by the factory's owner. The owner took Henry under his wing and paid for him to receive formal lessons.

Litolff went on to have four marriages and travel much of Europe as a performer. He composed reams of music--from salon pieces to larger concertos (like the two included here).

Litolff's popular yet well-educated style makes for some pretty enjoyable and accessible listening. In fact, the scherzo of the fourth concerto has been something of a show piece in its own right. It is a lively, almost dancing piece that allows the pianist to demonstrate their adeptness at full speed. I find both concertos to be quite enjoyable. This is what romantic music should be!

I have greatly enjoyed the work that the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra has done with Hyperion. This disc is no exception to what is quickly becoming a rule with them (a rule of excellency). The sound is up to Hyperion's typically top notch standard. Andrew Litton has a great grasp on the spirit of Litolff's music and it comes through in his conducting. Peter Donohoe proves himself to be a strong advocate of both pieces.

This disc is well worth hearing. I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Music From Other Lifetimes.......2007-07-28

I have been listening to Louis Hardin since 1974 when I was simultaneously introduced to MOONDOG and ALL GOOD MEN by Beaver & Krause - I think I must have used up all of my musical luck because nothing (including The Beatles, who are right up there next to God) has since resonated in me the way these two albums have. Hardin's unabashed musical honesty can be found but in two places, children and geniuses, and I think there must be a lot of both in Hardin. Each composition takes you on a different journey, if the listener has the courage to jump aboard; I always close my eyes, to be closer to the way the music was composed. I am particularly fond of his first album MOONDOG for a lot of reasons, but mostly I think because it was my introduction to a composer who has yet to meet his match, even within himself. As times change (and they inevitably will), other of his works will come to the fore and take their rightful place among the few that will always rise above all the rest.

5 out of 5 stars This needs a more articulate review..........2005-12-10

To tell the truth, the only reason I even listened to this disc in the store is because I spotted the cover, and wondered what the hell a guy who looked like that could sound like. I had a gushing smile on my face as I realized there was real talent and expression behind Moondog's odd facade. The first album on this disc (there are two herein) is made up of more "orchestral" material like none you've ever heard before (one of these tracks "stamping Grounds" is in "The Big Lebowski". The second album is made up of a series of short "rounds"; cyclical songs with naturally repetitive compositions (think row row row your boat, or three blind mice). Due to the familiar nature of such song forms, and the unique compositions employed by Moondog, the second album is quite buoyant and joyful. This is an all around great and very familiar listening experience, and quite a timeless set of albums. Get it while you still can!
