A winner of the Thelonious Monk award for her piano playing, Lynn Arriale has been a star on the horizon for much of the 1990s. Alas, her star never rose stateside, though she's well respected in Europe. This set of eight generous tunes catches Arriale and her trio at the 1999 Montreux Jazz Festival, and the band and its leader are in top form. Arriale has the impressionistic sense of Bill Evans and the breakaway potential of Keith Jarrett, where melodies overcome her and she's off into their hinterlands, rhapsodizing or indulging some hard-hit keyboard commentary that's usually stunning. Her off-speed versions of Monk's quintessentially off-speed "Evidence" and "Think of One" are electrifying for their playfulness. So, too, is her ballad "With Words Unspoken," an elegant treasure of understatement--that is, until the tune sweeps her away. If it's piano you love, this will at least tip, if not gently bowl, you over. --Andrew Bartlett

This is an excellent jazz group that has a full sound dispite being a trio. I recommend it for anyone who loves jazz.

5 out of 5 stars DAYTON SAYS: BUY THIS CD.......2001-01-06

The first time I heard the Lynne Arriale Trio was at a rustic jazz night spot (my favorite) called the Dearhead Inn, in Delaware Water Gap, PA. From that point forward, I have been a fan of this trio. Do you want to know why? Well, the trio has, as of this time, six CDs released, and if you want to know why I like them so very much, I would encourage you to buy ALL of the CDs. I have not seen the trio now for many years (they are WORLD performers and I am not, well, where the action is anymore), but when I notice a new CD released, I do not hesitate to buy one, as I know that the jazz will be fresh and inventive, and the overall performance will be a joy. Frankly, they're a class act! I'll let the jazz columnists fill you in on the specifics, but as for me, I am delighted to give my usual seal of approval here at AMAZON...DAYTON SAYS: BUY THIS CD....and ALL of their other CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Independent's Day.......2000-11-04

The much discussed 'Art of the Trio' is very much in evidence in this superlative live recording, with the outstanding pianist Lynne Arriale demonstrating her considerable gifts in detaching and reassembling tunes in new, provocative and dynamic ways, ably assisted by longtime collaborator Steve Davis on drums (or 'sounds'), and Jay Anderson's looming and tuneful bass. The trio manage to outMonk even the great Monk on the sombre 'Evidence', and other standout tracks like 'Estate','An affair to Remember' and the clipping Arriale original 'Calypso' are perfectly full of wonder. This is a timely reminder of one of the best evolving jazz piano trios around. As the album opens, one is naturally reminded of another piano trio night at Montreux, in 1968, and the Arriale trio can justifiably live in that august company. Recorded on July 4th 1999, this was truly an Independent's Day.

5 out of 5 stars Jack is God!.......2005-12-31

I am not such a fan of the Keith Jarrett trio with Jack D. (Keith's groaning and singing bums me out.) This record has Jack DeJohnette playing standards with a piano trio, and Evans and Gomez are two of the greatest. I admit that listening to this album now I feel like maybe Evans rushes the time a little bit...but that didn't bother me years ago when a bought this album and played it all the time. Still a must hear for the greatest drummer around.

      4 out of 5 stars Great action.......2003-10-23

This, the shortest-lived of Evans' trios, was also one of the best, specifically because of the presence of Jack DeJohnette, one of the baddest drummers of the last 40 years. He is a far cry from the quiet, withdrawn drums of Paul Motian, and he lights a fire under this trio that Evans hadn't had for a few years. Eddie Gomez is quite a musician as well, though his bass sounds rather quiet, and he is often heard slapping the big lady to get more out of her. He is, to be absolutely clear, no Scott LaFaro, though he is a stronger player than Gary Peacock, Evans' previous bassist. Gomez has lightning fast chops, and we find him soloing during other guys' solos, in the tradition of LaFaro, but without the same subtlety. All these complaints sort of fall away, however, on the rendition of "Embraceable You", which is essentially an extended Gomez solo. Though he seems to lose himself a couple of times (or maybe it's just me he loses), he plays with such speed and such intensity that it becomes difficult to nitpick about issues of style. The other highlights include "A Sleepin' Bee" and Miles Davis' "Nardis." Evans' playing, as always, is out of this world.

      5 out of 5 stars tight group.......2001-04-24

Unusual grouping of Jack Dejohnette with Bill Evans and Eddie Gomez (although Jack would work with Eddie on his "New Directions" material in the late 70's), but there's a ton of interplay and excellent soloing throughout. More lively than some of Bill's other albums, but he includes several nice ballads, as well as a few solo pieces. This is not the same sound as, say, The Vanguard Sessions with Scott LaFaro, but this album is really nice, with excellent sound quality and some wonderful group interaction. I think this album won a Grammy back in the day. One of my favorite Bill Evans albums, although I am partial to Jack DeJohnette's playing.

5 out of 5 stars The Magic Music of Hermeto.......2006-04-10

This is probably among the 3 best Hermeto's & Band records ever. It registers in good sound quality a particularly inspired nigth for the band -- and the public. The band is in great shape, performing elegant compositions with plenty of creative energy. All themes written by Hermeto Pascoal, the man himself.

      enjoy it,

5 out of 5 stars One of The best Hermeto's CDs ever!.......2002-04-28

Well, as far as I can understand, simply put, Hermeto Pascoal IS one of the great musical genius of the 20th century (and perhaps all centuries). I've awaited a long time for this CD. Indeed I own the 2 LP set. As a Jazz pianist also, I couldn't await no longer more. People who do not know Hermeto's talent, cannot understand the plurality of his work. One day he can play the piano, another day he composes music to play using cans. This diversity in fact just the beginning, since anyone can do it, but not employing such geniality... But, the true essence of Hermeto's music lies in the harmony, and the deep sense of melody, which is well documented in this fantastic show.
I have no words for advicing you to buy this CD, I can only say that if you like modern Jazz, if you're open mind for a different sound, contemporary, you won't regret it.
I cannot compare Hermeto Pascoal musicality with anyone these days, even with Chick Corea, Miles davis, Herbie hancock, the list goes long...

Indeed, the great Miles Davis considered Hermeto the greatest in the World.

5 out of 5 stars Contam que , no descontraido lugar Jabour...........2002-02-20

..vivia o mais sabio musico do mundo, hehe!

It is just satisfying that Hermeto is still performing concerts in the new millenium, despite the setback of his own ill health and loss of his beloved wife Ilza last year.

This cd, FINALLY issued after years of the 2 disc LP being a high priced collector item is an incredible document of a live concert Hermeto e Grupo! The recording was made almost 25 yrs ago, and sounds as fresh and modern , like it was a recent performance.

The "classic" Grupo featured virtuoso performances from the core members, Itibere Zwarg (bass) , Jovino Santos-Neto (piano/teclados)and the powerful percussions of Nene, augmented with Pernambuco and Zabele .
Nivaldo and Cacau were the reed/winds on this set, and their beautifully powerful improvisations are inspired, BUT THIS EVENING BELONGED ESPECIALLY to "O Bruxo do Jabour"--he went just "alem de galaxia" weaving magical luminous improvisations , combining heartfelt beauty and melodic/harmonic ritmico virtuosity.

Hermeto does his improvising mainly on the clavinete and piano, but the tour-de-force are his sinewy lines performed on the escaleta(also known as melodica), a small keyboard instrument that is blown into by the mouth, allowing for many wonderful techniques as "tounging",growling , vocalizing, etc.

The finest example of Hermeto's absolute mastery of this instrument is the song "Fatima", with an emotional melody line in jazz-waltz time that soon developes into a double time hard blowing improvisation on a chord progression variance of the familiar "I Got Ritmo" changes(cant spell that damn word in English still!)

Late in the "show", for an encore, Hermeto plays off altered blues changes, a rarity for him on his current recorded legacy.

HUMOR(read-joy and playful feeling, not satire or musical comedy)--Hermeto is estaticthis particular evening, weaving and bobbing from instrument to instrument as he usually does. he scats with and in counterpoint to his improvising, sings polyritmos of nonsense syllables(check "Remelexo" and the extended version of "Lagoa de Canoa" to see what i am saying).
Hermeto's most wonderful moment comes when he joyfully tells the audience of his inspiration derived from the beauty of the Montreux vistas, and that he wrote a nice ballad in his hotel room as homanaje.
"Montreux" is the result, a beautiful flute melody with accompaniment of Jovino on piano and Bere on contrabasse.

"Deus" achou por bem dar a Hermeto varias aptidoes--this is the usual thought when many "Hermetologists" speak of O Mestre. Yes , he IS an amazing composer, arranger, master of 1000 and one instruments. This cd reveals his "outro lado", his unbounding joie de vivre, bem humor, brotherhood and infinite heart.

4 out of 5 stars Plenty to Like Here, A Few Warts.......2007-01-01

Bill Evans plays with some real firepower on this CD, then lays back into some sweet ballads. The quick, aggressive playing of Eddie Gomez and playful, dancing drums of Jack DeJohnette sit nicely with the upbeat numbers. Bill gets to take some ballads by himself as well. This is really some good stuff from monster performers. It left me wanting more - unlike some of my other Bill Evans re-mastered CD's, there are no bonus cuts on this one.

Numerous good points aside, it did surprise me that this album earned a Grammy from the Recording Academy. Listening to this CD as a recording enthusiast was frustrating to me. In the full band numbers, the most prominent sounds were the clicking of the bass and the stick hitting the ride cymbal. The tone of the piano and bass were kind of buried in the background. The state of the art in live jazz recordings was well beyond this point (listen to some of the live recordings of Charlie Parker and Duke Ellington on Ultimate 16:Jazz Cafe ASIN: B000BF0E00), so the sound quality falls short of my expectations. Also, as wonderful a bass player as Eddie Gomez is, I don't enjoy a lot of long bass solos, especially when they are difficult to hear. Finally, repeated listening suggests some rhythmic tugs-of-war between Evans and DeJohnette - neither one plays "wrong", but their "beat placements" (front of the beat, back of the beat) seem to diverge a lot.

These points aside, this CD is a fine effort by Bill Evans and his band that gives a better perspective on his broad range of expression than his more subdued works.

4 out of 5 stars This is great music , but the sound mixing spoils it .......2006-05-21

I was really looking forward to this album and music wise I was not disappointed .

What I wanted to make clear is the eccentric way it sounds - this may not be important to all listeners , but it is to me as a person who sometimes listens on headphones .

The rhythm section instruments move all over the stereo image from song to song and this takes me out of the experience of listening , immersing myself in it and enjoying it to the fullest .

It is very good - I thought it was worth mentioning and it may be something that cannot be remixed or altered .

      5 out of 5 stars fantastic!.......2002-10-25

We are fortunate to have a wealth of fine performances by Bill Evans to enjoy. Standouts are almost all of the Riverside trio performances (including the benchmark Village Vanguard discs with Scott Lefaro and Paul Motian), as well as the superb "Turn Out The Stars" box set with his last trio featuring Marc Johnson on bass and Joe Labara on drums.
"At The Montreux Jazz Festival" ranks with these stellar recordings. Jack DeJohnette is, in my opinion, one of the finest drummers (and musicians) we have, and even at this early stage (1968)he is mature and musical like almost no one else can be. Gomez was at a career high, and Evans's playing exceeds his usual fantastic standards.
Verve did a fine job with the 20 bit remastering, and included the entire set list.
Any fan of jazz piano trios should have this disc!

5 out of 5 stars Bill at his most intense........1999-02-16

For all of you jazz fans out there who, unfortunately, think of Bill Evans as the lush, smooth, romantic stylist, this album will come in as a shock. Evans turns in an absolutely powerhouse, intense performance; he swings the hardest he ever did, and his melodic lines are more acerbic and biting than usual. His chording is also much more dry and tense; it's almost like he had been jamming with Herbie Hancock before the concert. Sometimes his solos are hysterically intense, as on "Someday My Prince Will Come." Of course, having Jack De Johnette's angular, disjointed drumming contributes mightily to this previously unseen element in Evans' style. This album should disprove the lingering image of Evans as the "cocktail pianist" among great jazz keyboardists.

I prefer the imperfections of live recordings over studio recordings. There is a certain energy that you get listening to a live performance. I have seen Joe Pass perform at least 20 times. I used to see him perform at The Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. Some of the shows were 3 hours of him just playing solo. The audience always wanted more. None of his recordings do him justice. He had a tremendous wit. To see and hear him live and watch his fingers move was one of life's joys. He is gone now. This CD brings back more memories to me than any other recording. He was the greatest.
