5 out of 5 stars Fantastic piece of samba-forro-rock.......2006-09-05

These guys are incredible and around 74 more incredible they were. They mix roots lyrics with more twisted ones, and the same for the music, they can samba and forro like any master but they mix it with rock, 70's rock that make sometimes you feel that you're listening to a prog band having holidays in Brazil. The guitar players are amazing, world top and the voices (Man and women) reach highs of harmony that remind me of Jefferson Airplane (but tropical obviously) sometimes. A must have. Also check out Baianos F.C , it's incredible too.

5 out of 5 stars TDWR.......2004-10-28

I heard this charming album in 1977 and fell in love. 27 years later I'm still in love. I just painstakingly transferred my old cassette taped off a scratched LP onto a CD and then found Novos Baianos on Amazon! Not many musicians compose tunes that stand the test of time. This is refreshingly different Brazilian Fusion Pop music, there's even a bit of jazz rock in the arrangements. I would describe this as 2 husky seductive voices with classic Brazilian accoustic guitaring backed by a tight electric rhythm section. The lyrics sound so lovely, they transcend all language barriers, though I would love a translation. I heard this at a time when I was deeply into fusion, funk and Paul Simon, but good music is good music. This is an essential part of anyones music collection...buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Faultless Brazilian Songwriting and Vocals.......2000-10-03

An all-round great record, this one features the songwriting talents of Morais, stunning cavaquinho playing and some of the warmest vocals on any Brazilian record. Released in 1974, this album features a young band with immense talent and desire to freshen up the sounds they grew up with. So they mixed their spare acoustic songs with some rock sensibilities and produced an album brimming with youthful vibrance. The first track, "Brasil Pandeiro" is a remake of a classic 40s tune although you'd never know it. Three of the Baianos trade lead vocals a la Sly and the Family Stone, and sing together for the samba-flavoured chorus. Stunning is the voice of Baby Consuelo, a singer anyone exploring Brazilian music should familiarize themself with, who takes lead on two songs, "Tinindo Trincando", a funky-rock mover, and "A Menina Danca" which was covered by Marisa Monte. The latter is absolutely gorgeous and will stay in your head for a long time. Elsewhere, Morais' tunes consistently uplift with swing and unbeliebably beautiful melodies. I was at a get together with a bunch of Brazilians and when one picked up his guitar to play songs, everyone knew Morais' songs and sung along. This is how classic his stuff is. Do modern Brazilian recordings leave you cold? Bossa becoming predictable? This album will introduce you to a rootsy sound often overlooked by the press but infinitely more rewarding than your typical fare.

5 out of 5 stars An Eternal Work.......2001-06-28

That is one of the best musical works of the brazilian music of all times. A true masterpiece, containing various classics, such as Preta Pretinha, Brasil Pandeiro, Besta e Tu and Acabou Chorare. Inspired arrangements by Pepeu Gomes and Moraes Moreira, mixing tradicional brazilian music with american/england rock and folk influences. 12 string steel guitars, 6 string nylon guitars, eletric guitars, cavaquinho (4 steel strings) and the pure brazilian percussion, all in a CD without weak songs. If you have to choice just one CD to know about the modern brazilian music - post bossa nova -, buy this one.

5 out of 5 stars Finally the classic is again available!.......2001-04-13

This band reminds me of Jefferson Airplane/Starship - with the ensemble of singers/songwriters plus that cool and irreverent attitude they had until they got old and cheezy in the late 70s. Plus the music very much has that acid-rock kind of feel to it. This is the band that produced the later solo stars Moraes Moreira, Pepeu Gomes and Baby do Brasil, all of whom feature here.

This album is just one great song after another. "Besta E Tu," "A Menina Danca," "Preta Pretinha," "Acabou Chorare," and a great rendition of the standard "Brasil Pandeiro."... Definately take advantage since it was very hard for me to find (I'm shocked to even see it on here!) and it's one of the few imports that are worth paying twice that much for.

5 out of 5 stars Good Samba from 70's .......2006-03-10

Novos Baianos in the 70's gathered among the original pop poets in the Brazilian scene(Moraes Moreira, Paulinho Boca de Cantor) and amazing musicians (Pepeu Gomes, Dadi, Moraes Moreira and others) with the fine and clean touch of Baby's voice. The result is one of the Brazilian's gotta have it!... "ACABOU CHORARE" album. They were the first group to put electric strings into pure and real Samba! Nobody did it better... even in Brazil! Pepeu, Moreira and Dadi are fantastic in the riffs and rhytm. Excellent percussion. Pure popular Brazilian music, original style...simple lyrics... maybe with the only good influence of Jimmy and Clapton. You gotta listen to "NOVOS BAIANOS FUTEBOL CLUBE" or "NOVOS BAIANOS F.C.", their secong album with the same formation too! Is also terrific! I am a rocker, but they samba and rock!

5 out of 5 stars Fresher than new.......2003-12-06

Refreshing and "young" even if it is from the 70's and doesn't belong to any trendy vogue!
If you like brazilian classic samba and always looked for something as spontaneous and popular but more in the modern taste, this is your CD.
