With samples from old 50's Cairo, through the 70's, and the 90's, there are gems on this cd collection that would take you years to find on your own. It has introduced me to some artists I didn't know but now love. Don't miss the Fairouz remix complete with machine gun fire at the end-- what a riot!

I agree with the other reviewer that for this collection to be definitive, it would have to add another CD of Rai, but he's right that there is enough Rai out there through other sources that this omission is no sin. While not all of the tracks are to my taste, they give a phenomenal overview of the regions musical styles and artists. Given the current state of world affairs, I can't but be struck by the coincidental irony of the Virgin release date of this collection (September 11, 2001).

I bought this CD here on amazon.com and it just came in the mail yesterday. I immediately unwrapped it and played all four. The music selection is fabulous. I am pleased to have discovered this great package of CDs - it's exactly what I was looking for. I highly recommend these CDs to anyone who appreciates middle eastern music. You can't beat the price!!!

There must be some magic black hole of CD pricing that mere mortals don't understand.....how do we routinely pay $14++ for an hour of music when you stumble across steals like this for this price and it has 5 hours?

This is an unbelievable deal....what a selection! I agree with the previous commentator about lack of Rai (but then the world music scene is overrun currently in my opinion with Rai, trance- rai, Euro-Rai, pseudo-rai, ham on Rai, etc...get it elsewhere) Its nice to illuminate the other middle eastern corners. Just what I was hoping to find! We routinely frequent a Lebanese restaurant north of Chicago and they always have this kind of thing playing. I beg them to tell me where they get their music they give me a sidelong glance and mutter "go to the Arab section of town and ask for it." (TRES helpful)

Well, here it is; this IS the Arab section of town (and I bet I paid less for it than they did...more $$ left over for that hummous).

Wow, you sure can't beat the price - $... for almost 5 hours of music. This is a great compilation of the best old and new music of the Middle East. Hakim, Amr Diab, Warda, Oum Kalthoum, etc. etc. etc. It's a very well rounded collection, though I wouldn't have minded a little rai considering how eclectic the mix is. Nontheless, you will have a hard time not getting up to dance with this one on!
