The nyckelharpa, or keyed fiddle, is a peculiarly Swedish instrument, one that can be both gentle and aggressive. The six musicians who make up the Nyckelharpa Orchestra, including Väsen's Olov Johansson, are all masters of the instrument. Their album, named for one of the major figures in the nyckelharpa's history (and modeled after the traditional tunes in his style), is a thing of joy. From the tinkling, music box introduction to "Samlingsmarsch" to the gliding beauty of "Klockstapelvalsen," they cover all the bases, throwing in a number of polskas as well. The interplay between the musicians is often breathtaking, as they trade off lines or the whole ensemble plays in folkish grandeur. Swedish traditional music has come to the fore over the last few years, but in some ways this new concept harks back to the old days more completely than any deliberate re-creation. --Chris Nickson

Swedish and Norwegian Traditional, and original string music featuring cello, nyckelharpa and fiddle.

"TRÅD." is a celebration of Scandinavian folk tunes for bowed strings, performed by Barry Phillips on cello along with two of Sweden's premier players - Sweden's first National Nyckelharpa Champion - Olov Johansson of the band Väsen, and virtuoso fiddler Olof Göthlin. Arrangements that look back to the old, and forward to the future.

"TRÅD.", the title of this album, is a combination of the abbreviation "trad." for "traditional" and the Swedish and Norwegian word "tråd" meaning "thread".

ah, middle of the road...some songs are adventurous and work well, but it doesn't carry an authentic feeling all the way through by any means. sometimes it's bourgeois, other times insightful, but mr phillips is waffling.

Great Swedish music.......2006-03-20

Those who love the sound of the Nyckelharpa, but know it only from the more non-traditional interpretations of Väsen will be delighted with this CD. Several players contribute to the is CD, with some very traditional solo cuts to some recent compositions which retain a more tradional texture. The cuts "Maria Nyckelpiga" and the Brudmarsch from Skellet are worth the price of the CD for the melodies alone. This is a perfect CD to introduce friends to the sound of the instrument.
