4 out of 5 stars The first Fuel Album - re-released.......2005-02-19

I was surprised to learn this was Fuel's first album release and that this version of the album is a re-issue. 'Bittersweet' and 'Shimmer' are the stand out songs of this album, which gives hints to the listener of how good Fuel would become. The music since this first album has evolved and over time and experience has gotten much better. The bonus tracks, there are two of them, are not that flashy but still its good to hear the acoustic 'Walk The Sky'.

4 out of 5 stars Burn, baby, BURN!!!!!!!.......2004-05-23

This is an album, by FUEL, called "Sunburn". Of course, you probably knew that BEFORE you read this. But what you might NOT have known is that FUEL, possibly my favorite band in the history of all bands that have ever been bands in history, have "re-issued" this album. This, OBVIOUSLY, means that the album has been re-released, featuring new artwork, new tracks, and of course, new little stickers all over the packaging!

If you're somehow familiar with the original "Sunburn" album, then you've basically been acquainted with this new edition. All of the original tracks are here(duh), and the new tracks include a song written for the Godizilla soundtrack, `Walk the Sky', a fun little ditty that features Jeff Abercrombie`s bass-playing talents brilliantly, as well as a very cool vocal melody that I`ve fallen in love with, just like all FUEL songs. The other new track is an awesome song called `King for a Day', which is a really interesting, mostly acoustic piece with some truly SICK spanish-flavored guitar playing by Carl Bell, and while Brett Scallions` vocals seem a little `edge-less' on this song, he makes up for it at the end of the track. I'm kinda disappointed that the "Sunburn" b-side `Sunday Girl' wasn't included as a bonus track; it truly deserves more recognition than it gets, and I`ve love to hear the song in it`s entirety, as I`ve only heard 1 min. clips, which isn`t enough for any FUEL song.

The artwork is much cooler than it`s original form, featuring the same Chair-man sitting in a room with a flaming floor of fire, but it's organized a little differently with a more illustrated look about it. The Chair-man looks a little more human... rather than a tormented soul experiencing spontaneous combustion... who is now holding a sun instead of a tambourine.

If you don't already have this wonderful piece of plastic, there's never been a better time to get it. Great album, great band, great music. And what else would you expect from FUEL?

4 out of 5 stars Just Some Good, Simple Music.......2006-06-30

Fuel never really got the credit they deserve, and they probably never will. Perhaps they came out at the wrong time -- too late to be respected in the grunge scene, as legends like Nirvana and Soundgarden had done their time -- and too similar to many other bands of their era, such as Creed, Nickelback, Oleander, etc. But the important thing to remember, despite the fact that they may not be the biggest creative force in rock music, is that they can write some damn good songs, and their official debut, 1998's "Sunburn" is a testament to that.

You all likely remember their biggest hit, "Shimmer," and you can probably count on it being played to death into oblivion, long after we're gone, but other lesser-known singles such as "Sunburn" and the moderately heavier "Bittersweet" and "Jesus Or A Gun" (personal favorite) were just as good. Likewise, "Mary Pretends" and "Ozone" show the band in pure rock form, while "Song For You" probably could have been another hit if they had stuck it out there. Basically, "Sunburn" is a perfect balance between hard-rocking tunes and radio-ready ballads.

It's easy to see why Fuel hit hard with this album. What's not to like about it? It may be a bit cliched and unoriginal, but "Sunburn" is a solid modern rock album. Frontman Brett Scallions (who is now estranged from the band) has a strong, slightly distinct vocalist, and guitarist Carl Bell proves to be a key creative force, pulling dual duty as both axeman and songwriter. I used to consider them a guilty pleasure, but not anymore. Fuel are/were probably one of the more dynamic and inspiring bands of their day. Anyone who loves straight-up, simply good hard-rock, should have their own copy of "Sunburn."

5 out of 5 stars Awsome Alternative.......2006-06-18

Fuels Debut Album is not especially groundbreaking or anything but is a memorable and solid effort. I wish there were more albums like this. Every song is rich, melodic and varied. There is not a bad track out of the 12. Each one is an individual experience, but well tied together with the rest in an unusual way. The lyrics are at times beautific. No whining grunge Nirvana angst. But a true from the heart sample of life. It really doesn't get much better than this. Listen to it again and again and it grows on ya. Kinda like a fine wine. Savour it..

5 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2005-10-12

This has to bee one of Fuels best....I was quite happy with this purchase and enjoyed a lot of the songs on this Cd. "Ozone", "Sunburn", and "Bittersweet" have to be my all time favorites. Although the rest of the cd is great as well, I dont have really anything negative to say about this cd. Here are my track ratings...

1. Untitled - 10/10
2. Bittersweet - 10/10
3. Shimmer - 10/10
4. Jesus Or A Gun - 9.5/10
5. Sunburn - 10/10
6. New Thing - 9.5/10
7. It's Come To This - 9.5/10
8. Song For You - 9/10
9. Mary Pretends - 9/10
10. Ozone - 10/10
11. Hideaway - 8/10

Overall: 95% A

"Sunburn" is one of my top favorite albums of all time. Anyone who enjoys the track "Shimmer" and is interested in hearing more Fuel, pick this up right away!

4 out of 5 stars Sunburn.......2005-02-26

Every day, I find myself drifting further and further away from this type of rock music. Ive found that way too many of the rock bands coming out today have no soul or emotion, and are simply going through the motions. Luckily, Fuel arent one of these bands.

Now when Im drifting away from mainstream rock, my main genre of interest is metal. Lamb Of God, In Flames and Pantera are 3 of my favorite bands, but I still really enjoy this CD just because of the emotion. No; it doesnt have frantic drumming, blazing guitar solos and harsh growling vocals. Nor does it have weak whining and screaming over distorted guitars. All it is is 4 guys, playing music and believing in what they are doing, and that is why I have been able to hang on to this CD.

The first thing that stands out when you listen to Fuel are the vocals. Brett Scallions has a somewhat raspy style of singing that makes him somewhat distinct. Granted the musicianship is nothing amazing, but for this type of music it doesnt have to be, and in fact there actually is a guitar solo in "Sunburn" (whens the last time you heard Nickelback play a guitar solo?). The lyrics are good as well. Theyre simple and emotional, and I think most people can relate to the songs.

Overall, this is a very solid CD that any fans of rock should like. But, if youre getting tired of the stuff thats being played on the radio and are seeking something a little bit different, I would give Fuel a try.

4 out of 5 stars Fuel Leaves A Singe For Late 90's Alternative Metal .......2004-10-04

Sunburn is evidence that the late 90's alternate-metal crowd had something that rocks and equally, had something emotional to offer. Carl Bell's songwriting displays an appropriate lyrical diversity which makes the album surprisingly artistic. Brett Scallions has a distinct voice which compliments the lyrics nicely too. Fuel knows their influence which is rooted in the late 70's classic metal. The band has a sound that ripples with a menacing stength and proves to be more than a flash in the pan.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautifully Written Piece of Art.......2007-06-29

Based on a purely classical mind set, this is one of the most beautiful string tribute albums there are. Granted, Muse fans who usually don't listen to string albums probably won't appreciate it, but for the classical lover, this is the tribute album to start with. The String Tribute to Muse is an absolute masterpiece amongst tributes.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not for the casual fan.......2007-05-19

I agree very much with Brian Allen; you should only spend the money on this one if you happen to be either a big fan or strings or a big fan of Muse, and I fall very much into the latter. As far as the songs themselves, some sound beautiful. "Bliss" nearly breaks your heart as an all-string tribute. But other songs are hard-core alternative rock, like "Stockholm Syndrome" so songs like that sound awkward at best. If you like a song by Muse here and there, only have one or two of their CDs, and think, "Oh, they're alright," don't bother purchasing it. However for big Muse fans, it's a nice treat.

2 out of 5 stars Review from a classical musician.......2006-02-05

I play cello in a string quartet and am a huge Muse fan as well. As far as this compilation of, perhaps, some of Muse's greatest hits, a string quartet version just doesn't depict the kind of emotional response that I get from listening to the orignal trio. I listened to some of these tracks and thought I was listening to my buddies playing Muse songs by ear and just messing around. Save your money, or better yet, for the same price go out and treat yourself to the original albums that these songs derived from (Showbiz, Origin of Symmetry and Absolution)!

1 out of 5 stars Doesn't do them justice........2006-02-04

Well, before I say anything about this tribute album, let me state clearly for the record that I am a HUGE Muse fan, and always will be. I'm also very fond of classical music, so I thought this album would be incredible. Unfortunately, that assumption was way off. To me, this was basically like a bunch of recordings of people humming Muse songs. The original tracks have so much power and emotion, but these versions seem cheap and empty. If they would have had a full orchistra it would have been awesome. The string quartet just doesn't cut it, at least not for me. Of course, this is all in my humble opinion.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not great.......2005-12-06

I'll do an actual review later, but here are some of my thoughts on this album, since only one other person rated it so far. The songs all sound great, but they hardly differ from the original versions, and none of them are really that much different. Most of them sound note for note the same, but just played on the strings. This is ok because Muse has a lot of classical influence in their songs, but I wish the makers would have put more effort into this. If you're a casual fan you can skip, but if you really like string tributes or Muse you should get it. Some better string tributes, which are less basic, are the ones for Nine Inch Nails, Coldplay, and A Perfect Circle.

5 out of 5 stars A Hidden Gem.......2007-07-17

This is one of my favorite CDs. It starts strong and never loses momentum. One great thing about this disk is how the John Strohm compositions, "Train" and "Girl in a Box", sit in the middle of the album, creating a nice "interlude" between Juliana's songs in each half of the CD. What a great one. If you like this, I also highly recommend the follow-up EP, "Rosy Jack World"

4 out of 5 stars The Blake Babies finally hit their stride........2005-09-07

Having produced a pair of albums of great alt-pop music, the Blake Babies seemed ready to conquer the world with "Sunburn". The problem was, no one was listening.

A Boston-based trio consisting of bassist/vocalist Juliana Hatfield, guitarist/vocalist John Strohm and drummer Freda Boner, the Blake Babies were finally hitting their stride with "Sunburn"-- their trademark edgy jangle pop with crisp, clear basslines, punky undertones, and biting lyrics, was finally honed into a respectable sound. There's not a whole lot of bad cuts on "Sunburn"-- in fact, the whole album is pretty good, and it seems the band was on the cusp of a great album. Strohm's guitar playing has reached extraordinary levels and Hatfield's vocal finally gained a confidence it sorely needed (one it would lose on her first attempt at a solo album shortly after this record).

So the result-- the album moves from great song to great song-- the superb "I'm Not Your Mother" opens, with forceful vocals and superb distorted guitar leads and moves quickly between crunchy guitar numbers (standout "Star"), melodic two-part vocal songs ("Train") and jangly pop music (I'll Take Anything"). Most of the somewhat subpar pieces are resurrected by some feature ("Girl in a Box" is kind of blah but features such totally bizarre lyrics, it manages to survive, for example).

Something stops me from thinking of it as a masterpiece, but certainly "Sunburn" is a great record. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Those were the days........2003-09-16

This is one of those simple alt/rock records that came out when alt/rock was still "alternative". Nothing earth-shattering, just cool kids making good happy music. Fans of Juliana will find this similar to her solo debut "Hey Babe". Other "Blake Babies" albums are good, but I like this one most. Of course Juliana has numerous great albums out too, including a "best of". This would go great next to your "Lemonheads" and "Pixies" cd's.

5 out of 5 stars A Timeless Gem.......2002-10-25

This is a classic early 90's alternative/pop album filled with catchy melodies and great hooks. Julianna's vocals are so enchanting and as a previous reviewer mentioned, unpredictable. It is amazing how fresh and true their sound remains a decade later. If you are interested in pop/indie/alternative from the last days of the college radio era you cannot pass on this album. I don't think I will EVER be tired of this album, or Earwig for that matter.

5 out of 5 stars A Bunch Of Fun Listening.......2002-02-17

I'm so surprised not to see more reviews in praise of this almost perfect Blake record. It would be quite deserved. If you're in doubt about getting this one, don't be. In fact you will be glad you bought it. One great song after another. It was a nice surprise not to find anything boring in between tracks. Mrs. Hatfield, John, and Freda really had it together on this one. I would highly recommend this. 'God Bless The Blake Babies' would also be another worthy addition to a collection. I still think 'Sunburn' sounds good a decade later.

This cd is phenomenal. If you like East Coast, folk/rock music or anything that defies musical category this is a winner. Gordie is an AMAZING songwriter, artist and performer. Lyrics are my thing, and Gordie knows how to use them well. If you're a fan of Jimmy Rankin, Gordie wrote Followed Her Around off of Jimmy's first solo album Song Dog. Sunburn is an excellent investment. It should produce countless hours of enjoyment, and leave you feeling inspired and awed by life. Or at least it does for me...

Indeed this is a compilation. But it is also mixed. The 'journey', as it were, happens because someone's steering...navigating the mothership...Props to THE BARONESS.

5 out of 5 stars an unrecognized gem from the Sunburn catalog.......2000-05-07

This is a well-mixed compilation off the Sunburn Label that actually achieves that "take you on a journey" quote that's way overused.

It starts off with the slow breakbeat meets the beach of Love Sun, and continues on the next 2 tracks, straying into some Latin sounds for the Hawke's Track 4. You are slowly transitioned from the smooth percussive sounds into a more progressive and occassionally squelchy teritory with the next few tracks. Now let me say that for me mixing different styles of music on a disc almost never works and is dissruptive; here it works perfectly. It then cools down with the relaxing sounds of Q-Burns and others.

Seriously, this is a gem you shouldn't miss, and if you like it check out Hawke's album Namadasquadisco and Q-Burns album Oeuvre.

4 out of 5 stars Great Chill jams.......2000-03-04

This Album rocks. The music has an etherial watery beat that makes you feel like you might be flying over a huge mysterious city in a fantastic dream. Ambient, but with a good beat. Just the right tempo... not too mellow, not too hardcore... perfect background for your favorite mind-journeys.

Also makes a good alternative soundtrack for any ski movie when you are tired of the usual thrasher-music soundtrack (try it with 'North of Heaven').
