Sunny Day Real Estate broke up in 1995 when bassist Nate Mendel and drummer William Goldsmith left to join the Foo Fighters or when frontman Jeremy Enigk converted to Christianity, depending on whom you ask. The band got back together in the summer of 1997 (minus Mendel, replaced by former Mommyheads bassist Jeff Palmer) to jam, and a full album blossomed. The result, How It Feels to Be Something On, is nothing short of stunning. Poking their heads into the gaping jaws of yearning, Enigk and company unravel tight, atypical rock songs to reveal a shimmering spool of uncertain longing. Almost sounding like an unlikely hybrid of the Smiths and Yes, How It Feels... is the grandest slab of musical sympathy since Smashing Pumpkins' Siamese Dream, equal parts intensity and sadness for the sing-along set. One of 1998's best albums. --Jason Josephes

5 out of 5 stars Tragically ahead of their time.......2006-06-15

Of the first three SDRE albums, I find this one the most fascinating. It has very little in common with the first two, which tangled sometimes jarringly with emo and stoner rock. Diary and LP2 are both important documents of 90s music, but they don't have the confident polish and grace of How It Feels. While the first two often used chugging rhythms and voice-cracking vocals, How It Feels comes off as an indie rock album that could have come out last week (and I mean that in a good way).

Enigk's voice seemed to have leathered up considerably during the band's breakup, and he's capable of a haunting falsetto that imprinted "100 Million" on my brain from the first listen. The muddy bass of before is now melodic, strummy and very tight with Goldsmith's kit. The giutars do a lot more jangling and picking and less hammering. To call it more "refined" would be a disservice to Diary and LP2, so I'll just say it's a cleaner production. In fact, the mix is fantastic, as another reviewer noted.

It seems that How It Feels was a snapshot of a band in significant stylistic transition only a few years into its career, like Radiohead or the Beatles. And I think this style of music is more suited to Enigk's vocals. It's more affecting. The title track and closing track are excellent examples. It's a little processed, but this never actually sticks out. In their previous work, I felt that Enigk's vocal range was SDRE's weakest link, but he's almost like a different singer here.

What will stick out to listeners of their earlier work is the superior production that lends the album a much wider sonic stage. The muffled living room has become an auditorium, and the haunting How It Feels soars with hope, wistfulness, hurt, and joy. It's not quite like anything I've heard before. Certainly not an album's worth, at least. Every song is, at the very least, pleasant background music, except perhaps for "Prophet," a foray into Eastern-tinged prog that others have done much better, in my opinion.

Best Sunny Day Real Estate Record. Period.

5 out of 5 stars The Masterpiece ****1/2.......2005-11-02

SDRE is a two sided coin. The first side encompasses their first two albums; raw, bleeding-heart, tortured, love-obsessed, low-fi. The flipside represents the latter half of their albums; grandiose, poetic, sweeping, accomplished, passionate. Both sides have a common theme; emotion.

The first album after the band's break, "How It Feels to be Something On," stands as their most accomplished and possibly best album. Jeremy's vocals have improved. His lyrics: more thematic. Surprisingly, the band sounds tighter than they ever did during their emo-pioneer days. They introduce their progressive rock roots here, as well, something they had only previously hinted. As a result, the album plays very much like a rock opera. If the song lyrics were linked by a story, it could rank with "Tommy" and "The Wall" as one of the great concept albums. Regardless, it still FEELS like a concept album and as a result, requires some attention.

The arena ready opener "Pillars" reintroduces us to the band. And the progressivness of "100 million" and the mid-Eastern tinged "Roses in Water" reveal the band's new game plan. Though lyrically not as Christian-based as LP2, Jeremy is still obviously influenced by religion on the aforementioned "Roses" and "Prophet." There are a few tunes that sound like first era leftovers (Days Were Golden and Two Promises) but the band had never really branched out in this way before. They even attempt what can only be described as a break-out-your-lighters acoustic ballad with "Every Shining Time You Arrive." Taken as a whole the album is amazing. Oddly, the band sounds ready for stadiums, even though radio-friendly songs like "8" and "In Circles" are nowhere to be found. But that's a small quibble. The album is great.

Overall: 9 out of 10.

5 out of 5 stars Genius.......2005-02-19

I like the idea of "Proggressive Rock" but I don't like most Prog Rock bands, because they're always mired in some pseudo-classical grandiloquent schlock that plods for days. How It Feels to Be Something On is what Prog Rock should be; complex without being complicated, powerful without being raunchy, lofty without being bloated. This album is an emotional journey bordering on religious experience. And the production is some of the best I've ever heard, which as a musician I'm probably stealing ideas from constantly. No recording can ever be perfect, but this one comes close.

4 out of 5 stars guud.......2005-02-18

I'm not an expert on SDRE and I've never seen them live or anything like that, but I thought I'd add my input on this album.
When I listen to "How It Feels to Be Someting On" I wonder why I don't have more SDRE. Then I think about it and I guess that I am afraid that their other albums will end up feeling a bit cheap. I know this doesn't make sense, so let me explain.
HIFTBSO starts out really really solid. The first 4 songs contain strong drive and are very well thought out, balanced and flow well- even with driving guitars, etc. Really good.
Then the album goes away for a bit... choppy, a bit more experimental for the sake of being different I felt... until "guitar and videogames" (song 8). This song is SDRE at their best, an eerie harmony on top of the same sweet, driving, hallow crescendos.
Overall, this is a good album. Although the middle section of the album doesn't catch me as much as the rest of the album, you shouldn't let that deter you from listening to it. Again, I can't say that I have heard any of their other stuff, but if you have (and like it) this album certainly won't disappoint.

5 out of 5 stars The Birth.......2007-05-17

I think it is funny that the music in the 80's sucked sooo bad. And then the 90's came and brought us Vanilla Ice and Hammer. I hate hair bands. I never knew music till for some reason when watching 120 Minutes on MTV (I don't want MTV anymore after they canceled this show). I saw their music video and it was all over for me. I was hooked on EMO... If anyone likes EMO, this is the start of EVERYTHING that came later. Even if you don't care for screaming and emotional feelings all of the music that is decent now a days came from this band. And if you look at some of the great bands of today you will find SDRE somewhere inbetween the lines whether they are playing in the band or influence.

5 out of 5 stars sunny day real estate.......2007-01-06

This is one of sunny day real estates older albums and it truely is an innovative experimental album that launched a band and helped form a new type of music scene in the early 90's. For fans of all those emo bands you should look into sunny day realestate because they are innovators and pioneers that helped shape modern music and it's a shame that they are no longer a band.

5 out of 5 stars Lost Treasure.......2006-11-07

I don't know what this band's legacy will be, whether or not they influenced modern emo or indie, or how to classify them. I do know they remind me of another band that was ahead of its time and broke up too soon: Hum. Before I picked up this album I had never heard anything like Hum's "Astronaut." Now I have and I'm pretty damn excited about it. Circles, 47, and Shadows are the three standouts for me, but this entire album is stellar.

This album and both of Hum's are constant reminders to me to scour the musical landscape so I will never completely miss out on brilliance like this again. When time travel becomes widely available, I'm going back to 1995 to see Hum and Sunny Day Real Estate live.

5 out of 5 stars A MASTERPIECE EVEN AFTER 12 YEARS.......2006-09-25

This is my favorite CD ever. This is the masterpiece of the 1990's. Every lyric is beautifully captured and Jeremy's voice is breathtaking, sad, masterful, happy, angry and everything in between. I truly love this album. best song here is "Song About An Angel" I cry everytime. my band covered this song and everyone was in tears after. pure emotion.

5 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable.......2006-07-01

I had heard of SDRE for many years but just recently picked up Diary and LP2. These are excellent albums musically and the emotions in the singing seems very genuine. I only wish I had picked these up sooner.

When the defunct Sunny Day Real Estate regrouped for How It Feels to Be Something On in 1998, the band's fans were divided. Some saw it as a collection of frontman Jeremy Enigk's most potent songs, and others dismissed it because it didn't sound like the band's previous efforts. The Rising Tide will probably thin the herd even more, not because it's a bad album but because the band once again has gone traipsing through the fields to find a new pasture in which to graze. Tide engages their emo-antics with the kind of seven-cornered songs that made up Enigk's solo release, Return of the Frog Queen, but this time they're topped with a dose of progressive-rock overdrive. It sounds a bit hard to swallow, but producer Lou Giordano deserves a hand for making a shift of sound go down smooth. --Jason Josephes

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2007-06-20

I'm new to this band and thrilled to have found them. Reminds me a little of Flaming Lips. Lovely harmonic progressions, singing, sounds, and lyrics. I will now proceed to purchase every other CD by this band.

5 out of 5 stars Strange Days, Indeed.......2007-01-31

I was absolutely obsessed with this CD when it came out back in 2000. This is one of those "artistic statement" albums that are difficult to pigeonhole into a category. Their music is so subversive and unusual while simultaneously being so melodic and familiar that you can almost imagine record company execs puzzling over it's marketability with furrowed brows.

Sunny Day Real Estate play a sort of post-modern alternative rock that is both original and intelligent, like an even more surreal and nihilistic Radiohead. Frontman Jeremy Enigck lays down very melodic but eerie-sounding reverb-drenched vocals over a layered, dissonant wall of distorted guitar textures, creating a very unique and dreamlike vibe. Combined with the surrealist poetic lyrics which somehow manage to be disturbing, hallucinogenic and existentialist yet hopeful at times, the overall feel of the album is very compelling and original. Bo one quite sounds like this band. The songwriting and musicianship are also top-notch, with enough hooks to get stuck in your head, but enough use of unusual chord voicings, time changes, and skillful manipulation of effects to be interesting to progressive music fans-something not often found in your standard alt-rock "emo" album. This album has the avant-garde vibe of Radiohead's "Kid A" with better songwriting, musicianship and lyrics and without the pretense. Very, very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2006-11-04

I actually discovered Sunny Day Real Estate thanks to their track on the Batman Forever soundtrack. But it is this album which made them one of my favorite bands. Killed by an Angel, One, Snibe are incredible songs that you will enjoy right away, but the rest of the album is just as good. Unfortunately I got into this band after they already split up so I never got to see them in concert. Classic.

4 out of 5 stars "Prog Emo" before the term existed.......2006-08-09

In hindsight, it seems impossible that the Sunny Day Real Estate whose post-hardcore early years inspired every horrible emo band on Earth could've been the same Sunny Day Real Estate that recorded "The Rising Tide." Sonically speaking, the group that made "The Rising Tide" -- here once more a trio, after being unable to find a permanent bassist -- is to emo as Rush is to the twee-pop. Indeed, Rush provides the ideal reference point for a review of SDRE's fourth album: Sounding higher-pitched and more British-affected than ever, bassist Jeremy Enigk's vocals hit Geddy Lee territory throughout "The Rising Tide." Guitarist Dan Hoerner's chord progressions eclipse Alex Lifeson's most visceral work in standout tracks such as "Killed by An Angel" and "One." Enigk's and Hoerner's lyrics -- earnestly decrying complacency, greed and other social ills -- at times sound ripped from Neil Peart's poetry diaries. And William Goldsmith's drumming, while not as rigidly asymmetric as that of Peart, puts complex grooves and accents in all the right places. It's as if SDRE were trying to make every album they thought Rush should've cut after "Moving Pictures" -- simultaneously dark, textural, riff-based and cliche-free, and yet filled with the sort of grand, sweeping gestures and lofty arrangements one usually finds in vintage prog.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful, incredible, spiritual, engrossing, uplifting.......2006-01-16

i wouldn't believe a negative word you hear about this album. i'm a sdre fan and i enjoy their albums as well, but this is the first one i heard and it's captivated me from the first listens. i've listened to it a million times and it never fails to leave me uplifted - it's like a breath of fresh air.. but it rocks! the band is just really amazing here.. i would go so far as to say it's sdre at their VERY BEST. this is their PEAK. some people claim it's too prog-ish, and yes, it does bear a resemblance to rush due to the high vocals and prominent bass, but who cares? the songs are amazing. it's also interesting to see how their sound evolved through their different albums to end up here.

5 out of 5 stars a classic from my younger days.......2006-09-21

i love this cd. i agree with the user who said sdre were not quite the same after this album, but i disagree with his statement that how it feels was not as good a record. i think this cd was the most beautiful thing they could put out at that time, when they were younger - and it is truly beautiful. but i think how it feels is a more mature sound and is sort of the "grown-up" version of this album.

still, i love this cd. this and how it feels are, to me, two volumes of the same release. one shows the band coping with changes early in their onset, the other shows how they adjusted to those changes years later.

this cd has some really raw and beautiful emotions. definitely check it out.

5 out of 5 stars What's a sophmore slump? ****1/2.......2005-11-02

Sunny Day Real Estate was not a band I had even heard of during the 90's. Unfortunately I listened to many of the bands they inspired before I got the chance to hear any of their albums, and as a result, the band didn't sound as special or as groundbreaking as they would have otherwise. Now, they are quickly becoming one of my favorite bands, and all four of their albums I have considered my favorite at one time or another. Currently, LP2 is their best.

Another reviewer said he liked the album but thought the opening three songs were fairly regular and weak. I could not disagree more. "Friday" and especially "Theo B" are two of the best songs on the album, perhaps in their entire catalogue. They are specifically hard-- loud guitars, howling vocals. Makes me wonder if fans who dismissed "The Rising Tide" as "too rocking" ever really listened to this album. But each song is very detailed, very emotional. They're extremely personal and at times, very religious which is refreshing for rock music. If "Diary" announced the bands existence to the rock world, "The Pink Album" introduced them to SDRE World; emotional, honest, passionate, and joyful. I would say this is the most happy of the 4 albums, due to the overtly pro-Christian lyrics in great songs like "5/4," Jeremy Enigck's testimony. "J'Nuh" basically follows suit. "Rodeo Jones" is great fun and "8," of course, became the band's most commercial song.

That Sunny Day Real Estate had disbanded before the release of this album left many disillusioned fans paying more attention to the band's breakup than the album. In hindsite, all of their albums showcase them in top form, but perhaps especially here. SDRE sound like Beatles being tortured by love, and this is their "Let It Be."

Overall: 9 out of 10.

5 out of 5 stars Raw feelings put into beautiful music........2005-07-04

Over the past years, Sunny Day Real Estate has found themselves being labeled as emo legends. With the release of Diary, and all the success behind it, it would seem nearly impossible to follow up with something that was even close as successful as Diary. Diary, filled with a lot of beauty and emotional, would be hard to successfully surpass it's meaning and sheer magnificence. Did Lp2 ever succeed this? No, but I don't think that was ever Sunny Day Real Estate's intent. I think what they just wanted to do (and what they were best at) was make an album that was filled with what they were feeling. I don't think they were worried about it having the same sound or feeling as Diary, as Lp2 does have somewhat of a different sound to it. With this in mind though, do not look for Diary. Lp2 is a different album, but still keeps the beauty that Sunny Day Real Estate is known for, and they end up showing a little more to go with it.

Throughout Lp2, you will notice some major changes. Maybe just in the guitar sounds, maybe somewhere else. Lp2 is definitely a more raw sounding album (compared to Diary). It has a lot more up tempo parts, and more technical song structures. The guitars are often playing fast and heavy. The clean parts, as they were on Diary, are still magnificant though. They still posses a heartfelt sound, that really makes you feel the song. Much more dirty sounding guitars gives this album an extra kick to it. The often punky sounding guitars really sends Sunny Day Real Estate into a traditional emo sound, and it really adds quite a lot the songs. Singer Jeremy Engik still sings his heart out, but even more off key on this album. To me though, the more off key he sounds, the more passionate it sounds. Sunny Day Real Estate are all about putting their feelings down in music, and both Jeremy and the band succeed beyond this, making a very inspirational and classic sound to go along with it.

I imagine it was hard for Sunny Day Real Estate. Although Diary was more pop friendly, Lp2 was definitely more emotional and sometimes, it seems like the guys had put more worked into this then they had on Diary. That is a completely random predicament, but it does seem somewhat rational. Some of the tracks, such as the song 8 and Rodeo Jones step into completely unknown territory, but ends up sounding more passionate and emotional then anything they had ever done. With these two heavy hitters on the album, it was destined to be a classic. Songs like Friday and 5/4 sound like they could have been on Diary, but they were cut off because they didn't fit the album well enough. Jeremy really sings beautifully on these two songs, while the band play their trademark gorgeous melodies over it. As for the lyrics, they make a whole lot less sense then they did on Diary. You can tell that the band was going more for a technical and metaphoric feeling on this album. It comes off strongly though, and really emphasizes Lp2's rawness and passion. With this album displaying a two face like character of heavy hitting and softness, it equals an amazing and meaningful album, which will not be easily forgotten, even when compared to the almost flawless Diary.

Lp2 was the last emo like album that Sunny Day Real Estate had created, and also the last album bassist Nate Mendel was on. It is a popular opinion that Sunny Day had decreased in what they were once known for, emotion, as the albums continued. This can be argued, but there is one thing known for sure, and that thing is Lp2 is a solid, beautiful and amazing album. From start to finish, you find some of the most creative and hard hitting songs, yet keeping up with the tradition of matching feelings with music. Of course, it is only natural for this album to be compared to Diary. Also with that, it is very hard to choose which is better, but in my opinion, it can't be chosen. Lp2 has it's charm, it's elements that make it a very stand out record. It might not be as memorable as Diary, but it is surely nothing to forget, and it is obvious to see why this album is usually put up there with the best of the best in the emo genre. Passion can be shown in many ways, and Lp2 shows it in every way.

4 out of 5 stars Good Follow-up to Diary.......2004-09-03

SDRE's second album takes a couple listens to get into but so does every great album it seems. It's definitely a step down from Diary but masterpieces only come once in a while.

Friday (3/5)- Pretty good start to the CD but not one of the highlights.
Theo B (3/5)- Kind of a typical song while still maintaining originality.
Red Elephant (3/5)- Another song that's just "good" but that's about to change.
5/4 (4/5)- This track gets its title from the verses' 5/4 time signature. Me being a drummer, I look for unusual timings but it's a truly nice song (even if it is about Jeremy's love for Jesus).
Waffle (4/5)- Starts off sluggish but then it immediately changes timings and becomes pretty.
8 (5/5)- My favorite song on the album.
Iscarabaid (4/5)- This song has a cool, relaxed feel while being sad at the same time. Who would've thought he's singing about a boy who died of melanoma? Pretty powerful.
J'Nuh (4/5)- Really good song. I especially like the whole breakdown where the drummer plays his part in 4 while the rest of the band stays in 3. The vocals are funny-sounding but it definitely fits: "Call the clock on Tuesday...morning." Hahaha.
Rodeo Jones (4/5)- A good finishing song that has odd lyrics. The first verse has an awesome line: "Off of my hand flew a snow white dove/Watch it disappear into the sun." But then the chorus talks about Shakespeare and at the end there's something about Rodeo Jones' misery whoever he is.

As several other people who posted reviews said, this album was made to complete their contract with Sub Pop so they could break up. The feel of the album makes that fact apparent and also suggests that Jeremy is happy now that he's found Jesus so making an album even close to their debut is impossible. You can't make a good emo album if you're happy in my opinion so some of the sadness was forced on this CD which is a form of selliing out and obviously detracts from the album as a whole. But overall, it was a really good try with true emotions in it that I can somewhat relate to and have inspired me.

5 out of 5 stars Rock Masterpiece.......2004-06-26

Unique, stands apart from the average "alterno-rock" and definitely stands apart from the normally atrocious "emo-core". This is intense music, climactic, adrenaline pumping rock. The intensity in this album not only derives from Jeremy's borderline orgiastic crooing and the slow opening vs. fast ending split, but SDRE's genius on this album comes from some clever chordal structure on Theo B and 8. The major-minor opening of "8" is complemented perfectly by Jeremy's choice of melody line for the vocals, as he hits the exact notes the create and release the tension in the unorthodox (for rock) chord change. "8" is probably the highest indie rock can go, as far as rock operatic, and that's fine with me.

Theo B builds w/ a quick guitar riff juxtaposed w/ a hyperactive base line to create the tension, and then ends w/ guitar and drum assault that can best be described as epic. 5/4 and Red Elephant are sweeter, slower songs, and play off of Jeremy's floating vocals and Dan's high pitched arppeggios. Iscarabaid lulls you to sleep, then punches you in the face.

Which is better, "How It Feels to Be Something On" or LP2? They are both great, emphasizing different qualities in SDRE's repertoire. SDRE is more visceral, immediate in its reaction, whereas "How it Feels" is almost intellectual, at times distant, yet its own reward in the complexity of its music.

This cd is great. I never heard of SDRE before I heard it from a friend THIS album from a friend and it sounded pretty good. Picked up a copy, and it's amazing.

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars. A great live experience........2002-02-05

This is a much better cd than many people realize. I'm not sure what problems some people have with it-I realize the mix is good in some areas and a bit 'off' in others-but it still sounds great and I think many of these songs find their definitive versions on this disc. This is the first cd by SDRE I heard and I've since purchased all their other albums. The "Pink" lp is my favorite but this cd and "Diary" are close behind. Should not be missed. Worth the price of admission just for "Song About an Angel" and "Guitars & Video Games", both of which are better than the album versions.

Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING CD IF YOU'RE A DIEHARD SDRE FAN!.......2001-10-18

I had first heard that they even had a LIVE SDRE cd on a college radio station. I had called to request "IN CIRCLES" & they only had the live version. Immediately after hearing it on the radio; I went to Amazon.com to find it & purchased it.
That song live is definitely amazing. Jeremy Enigks voice is soo passionate.
All the other songs on the cd are from various cd's (past & present)Live versions are sometimes worse than cd recordings. BUt, this live version rocks!

5 out of 5 stars Yes it sounds vary good.......2001-09-13

I had heard on SDRL before and had been intrested in checking out some of there music. So the story goes, that one day i was looking in my local used music store. There it was. Right in the been. I had planned on buying this album brand new but to tell you the truth i probely would't get around to it for a while. But since it was only [a price] i picked it up. People have told me that this was avary good band and since i liked nirvana alot i would like this.I am a firm beliver that Sunny Day Real Estate is a great band and a great album. When listening to this album it is easy to forget that it was recored live. The sound is so good that it sounds like it was recored in a studeo. Buy this disk!

3 out of 5 stars Quite Average.......2001-08-26

This album contains 6 songs from How It Feels... and 5 songs from Diary/Lp2. While some of the songs ("Days Were Golden," "in Circles", "Pillars") gain a lot live, there are many songs that sound either exactly like the album version or worse. "Every Shining Time You Arrive" doesn't work as well without the keyboard solo, and "The Prophet," great song as it is, needs the aboriginee chanting to capture the full effect. Also, "J'Nuh" fails to capture the same atmosphere it did in the studio. Overall, you will enjoy this if you're a hard core fan of Sunny Day Real Estate, otherwise, stay away from this.

5 out of 5 stars WOW Where have these guys been?.......2004-01-08

This whole album is awesome. Great tracks throughout! I simply can't believe that I had never heard these guys on the radio before. I heard about these guys from the "monster.com" commercial some years ago. Now I let all my friends borrow the cd now, and they love it too.

5 out of 5 stars Tugboat Annie Power Pop Makes You Want More.......2002-07-03

In 'The Space Around You', Tugboat Annie has assembled a wonderful power-pop jaunt which keeps you interested from beginning to end. Never straying too far from their basic guitar crunch and melody mix, the band zips through 10 solid tracks which had me smiling the whole way. It is fun music. Period. The writing is clean and creative, but keeps to simple relationship-based lyrics which paint with a broad brush that allows the listener to interpret as he will, or just simply listen and enjoy. While not breaking any new ground, the sound reflections of Oasis/Third Eye Blind/Weezer may be similar, but Tugboat Annie accomplishes what those bands couldn't - to keep me interested through every song and left me wanting MORE. PLEASE RECORD ANOTHER ALBUM SOON! (Kudos to Monster.Com commercial for not letting this album slip away unnoticed...)

4 out of 5 stars Good tunes.......2001-07-12

This cd is quite good. There are several highlight tracks including my favorites Love, Explanations, and Don't Stop Holding Out Your Hands. The music is good and the listen is excellent all the way. Not quite worth the five star mark, but worth the money. If you like Tugboat Annie check out 6 going on 7.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding CD!.......2000-12-22

I will go out on a limb here and say right now that if this band will get some airplay and some publicity, they will be huge.

Let me explain where this review is coming from. I have very eclectic tastes. I listen to and enjoy just about every style of music from Mozart to Metallica, from Bluegrass to Blues. I don't care that much for most rap music, but hey...to each his own. Favorite bands would include U2, R.E.M., Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Black Crowes, Sixpence None the Richer, Dave Matthews, Rush, and so on. I have hundreds of CDs of all styles of music.

"The Space Around You" by Tugboat Annie is one of the top 5 or 10 best rock CDs I have. If you are a Tugboat Annie fan and you don't already have this CD, let me assure you that it is on a different level compared to their other releases. If you are not a Tugboat Annie fan, you need to listen to this CD. This is one of the few CDs that both my wife and I agree is great. In fact everyone I've shared it with has been very impressed.

I don't know how best to describe Tugboat Annie's sound because they have their own. The closest description I can think of is to compare them with some early R.E.M. such as that found on "Reckoning" only a little bit heavier.

To the songs:

STOP - This song kicks a** A great melodious-rock introduction to the CD. You WILL find yourself hitting repeat before you move on to track 2.

THE WISHING SONG - The fastest tempo song on the CD. Good driving to the beach to go surfing song. I defy you to listen without playing drums on your steering wheel.

TELL ME - Another strong melody. One of those songs that grows on you each time you listen.

LOVE - I love the first few bars of this one. Another one you have to hear to understand.

HELEN OF TROY - This song has taken the longest to grow on me, perhaps because I couldn't figure out the lyrics. Oh well, still better than 95% of what is on the radio today. One of the three mellowest songs on the CD.

EXPLANATIONS - The song I heard on the radio that made me say, "Who are these guys? I hafta have this CD!" Another great song!

MORE - I keep waiting for a weak song that I want to skip. Doesn't happen. Still going strong.

OFF THE GROUND - Mellow time.

AWAY - Second to last song, and I still haven't heard a clunker.

DON'T STOP HOLDING OUT YOUR HANDS - When this song started it reminded me immediately of what Pink Floyd might have sounded like if they weren't manic depressives. Cool song.

If you like straight ahead rock and roll, this is an album you need to buy. It gets better with each listen. Someone get these guys some publicity!! Saturday Night Live, Letterman, Leno, anybody!!

5 out of 5 stars This Band Keeps Growing.......2000-06-10

This is another ten solid tracks from a band I first witnessed at a loft party in Buffalo during another lifetime. Good on first listen, but after the fourth spin all the hooks and nuances come through. If the last track "Dont Stop Holding Out" doesn't become a radio staple across the land then all station programmers should be marched into the Boston Harbor.

Album Description

Ta-da! Brought to you through the magic of lo-fidelity recording and honest songwriting, we present you with the debut album from NYC's own Grey Does Matter.

How To Make Millions In Real Estate is not a guide designed to earn you riches, nor is it a tutorial on the intricacies of escrow. How to Make Millions in Real Estate is a power-pop rock record with melodic harmonies, vintage synths and dirty guitars. This is what happens when a boy raised on the early beats of hip-hop discovers punk rock and the Beatles.

5 out of 5 stars Great simple songs you've never heard before.......2005-02-03

Let me add to the chorus of cheers here. This is a great CD.

The beauty of this CD is that the music and lyrics seem so simple, yet are perfect. It's so rare when bands pull this off that of course, when one does, the resulting effort remains largely unnoticed. It's full of power pop guitar hooks and keyboard work, and the lyrics are sort of goofy in a sophisticated sort of way. The songs are timeless, and wouldn't seem out of place from any era since, well maybe 1975. Got that? Well maybe not, so get this CD and you'll know what I'm talking about.

5 out of 5 stars great debut and strong lyrics - ipod favorite.......2004-09-02

power pop bands can be really lame on the lyrics so what really drove this record home for me was that the lyrics were smart.

a totally sound investment for your cash, all of these songs are strong and smart and will fester in your brain for weeks. the melodies are infectious and the songs hooky. i'm not crazy about the one slow song, but hey, i'm not a sappy guy.

this cd is in heavy rotation on my ipod and i look forward to more from GDM.

5 out of 5 stars Best record this year.......2004-05-21

ok, i know that sounds insane, but ever since i popped this record in my cd player it has not come out. now, don't get me wrong, there are some great records out right now, but if you are a sucker for melody and pop sensibility, then this record is for you. this band gets compared to weezer and fountains of wayne a lot and those comparisons are true on many of this record's tracks, but there is also some punk rock inspired stuff and a nice slower song. anyhoo, i heard this on college radio and if these guys put out a second record and it's half as good as this one... well, it'll be a shame if they don't make a million bucks and rule the airwaves. ok, i'm a fan. buy this new or used man.

5 out of 5 stars k i n g s OF < < >>.......2004-03-04

I saw a review of this CD online and it sounded like it was something I would be interested in. I was most intrigued by the reviewer calling it "vector rock". Anyway, I went to their site to hear it. Well... yes, this is what you would call "vector rock". And it's amazing. Grey Does Matter are at the cutting edge of an inadvertent indie rock movement (which includes Metric) that is part 80's synth, part punk, part emo, part 70's pop. I hope more bands come out sounding like this. It's a quiet revolution in the making.

    Album Description

Smooth's production is an indisputable juxtapose of live instrumental brilliance and sophisticated electronic funk. The sheer drama of life's melancholy moods oozes through the musical seams of their debut album. Smooth lays down a cinematic journey of organic musical emotion with soul and elegance making their sublime sound the vanguard of modern music.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Jewel of the ambient genre.......2006-09-14

Simply one of the best albums in the ambient genre. Smooth sounds, often with vocals laid over, create an album full of mood and richness. The production compliments the lulling melodies. If you enjoy the likes of Zero 7 or Blue States, then Smooth should defintely be in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars This is definitely a "Smooth" album..........2004-06-28

Smooth's music is awesome! When I first heard this CD I was blown away with their fresh and innovative sound. I love the harmony between the electronic style and the acoustic instumentation. I definitely recommend this CD to anyone who is sick of the cheesy mainstream-overproduced corporate pop music that is constantly on the radio. The Smooth album is an amazing listening experience all the way to its last electronic note...Five stars!
