One of the elements that's made the Chieftains the stellar Celtic band in the world is their love of innovative collaborations with mainstream pop stars. The Wide World Over: A 40-Year Celebration gathers into a single collection some of the Irish ensemble's most memorable moments, including predictable alliances with artists such as Van Morrison, who sings "Shenandoah" to additional backing by the Irish Film Orchestra, and unlikely pairings like the Rolling Stones, who add a rock kick and the "Satisfaction" riff to "The Rocky Road to Dublin." Cross-cultural experts Linda Ronstadt and Los Lobos demonstrate their versatility on the Mexican ditties "Txalaparta" and "Guadalupe," on which pipes and pennywhistle don't seem a whisker out of place, while Ricky Skaggs points to the Irish and British roots of American country music on the rousing "Cotton-Eyed Joe." Art Garfunkel, Sting, Sinead O'Connor, Joni Mitchell, and Elvis Costello are also featured in classic performances with the 40-year-old Irish band, while a brand-new collaboration with Ziggy Marley yields a gorgeous Don Was-produced rendition of Bob Marley's "Redemption Song." The cliché that there's a bit of the Irish in all of us proves true in this wide-ranging, constantly rewarding, and frequently surprising collection. And the tracks on which the Chieftains go it alone are also a gas. --Bob TarteCustomer Reviews:

A Great Collection.......2004-05-24
Aptly titled "The Wide World Over", this collection focuses more on the group's recent collaborations with mainstream artists than their traditional pieces. Some of the highlights include the Corrs' light-hearted duet, the traditional 'I Know My Love', Sting's powerful 'Mo Ghile Mar', Van Morrison's 'Shenandoah', and the powerful anthem 'Long Journey Home', featuring Elvis Costello.
Why four stars, then? I would have liked to have seen more traditional fare on a compilation album. While there are some fantastic jigs on here, including 'Live from Matt Molloy's Pub' and 'Morning Dew/Women of Ireland', overall the album is lacking in the types of songs that have made the Chieftains famous. And, while the collaborative efforts are commendable, they represent a mere drop in the ocean of what the Chieftains have accomplished. It's a good album, but by no means contains the full spectrum of what this innovative band has recorded.
A collection that celebrates the Irish group's versatility.......2002-12-25
These are all cuts from previous albums, so he who has all of their albums probably won't want this one. For the rest of us, there are some realy outstanding cuts. I especially enjoyed Sinead O'Connor's singing of the traditional "The Foggy Dew". That one's followed by The Corrs and "I Know My Love", another traditional with a fresh twist. Ricky Skaggs joining the group for "Cotton-Eyed Joe" was a real high point, spotlighting the relation of Irish traditional reels and jigs to bluegrass. Joni Mitchell is one of the greats, and hearing her own "The Magdalene Laundries" backed by the group is a real treat. And Van Morrison bares his soul in "Shenandoah", again highlighting the Irish influence on American music.
I was a bit disappointed with Diana Krall & Art Garfunkel's "Morning Has Broken", which certainly doesn't compare with Cat Stevens. So you can't win them all. Sting didn't seem appropriate on "Mo Ghile Mear" either.
However, I was pleasantly surprised by "Full Of Joy" with the Chinese Ensemble. That's one where it sounded everyone was having fun. And the closing rendition of Bob Marley's "Redemption Song" featuring Ziggy Marley was a winner.
All in all, if you don't have most of these on other Chieftain albums, you'll want this one.

The producers of this anthology of Irish music must have looked at all those Christmas collections that turn up in December and wondered why a similar wave of green-tinged releases didn't flood the market in March. In that seasonal spirit, The Ultimate St. Patrick's Day Celebration is about as deep an overview of Irish music as Lawrence Welk's 22 Merry Christmas Favorites is a thoughtful meditation on the birth of Christ. The songs selected are nearly as familiar as "White Christmas" ("Danny Boy," "The Rising of the Moon," "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling"). The artists (Clancy Brothers, Irish Rovers, Dubliners) and arrangements are likewise of the crossover variety. And yet, all things considered, this collection will keep revelers reveling--as it's meant to do. --Steven StolderCustomer Reviews:

Album Description
One of the America's most exciting hammered dulcimer players recording today, Sansone performs on the extended range chromatic hammered dulcimer with damper pedals. The percussive melodious sounds of her wooden mallets dancing across over seventy wire strings brings a special beauty to her music. Sansone has wowed audiences for over twenty years and this, her most ambitious project and 11th recording takes the hammered dulcimer to a new level. Sansone's virtuoso playing techniques and diverse charms, a combination of great warmth and melancholy, spare lines and densely fascinating instrumentation has garnered much praise from the media. Women Today said " Maggie Sansone Breathes Immediacy Into The Past...interprets the folk idiom on an ancient instrument with a modern voice, and retains the integrity of both."As on the her last CD- A Traveler's dream, producer Bob Read brings his creativity as a producer and musician together, complete with his arsenal of instruments which includes bass clarinet, clarinet, alto flute, piccolo, soprano sax, accordion, piano, synthesizer, organ and percussion. Label artists Karen Ashbrook on hammered dulcimer, Irish flute and pennywhistle, Sue Richards on Celtic harp, Paul Oorts on guitar, cittern, mandolin and musette accordion and Robin Bullock on guitar and cittern make guest appearances. Other guests include Sarah Read on Irish fiddle and cello and Ian Lawther on Northumbrian pipes. In keeping with the album's theme of love and celebration, the music includes: 13th century medieval music by the two most famous French and German composers of courtly love; jigs, reels from ancient Celtic lands of Northumberland, Wales, Ireland and Scotland; mesmerizing improvisations on the Persian santur, duets with both dulcimers, Celtic harp music by legendary! Irish bards Rory Dall O'Cathain (1570-1650) and Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738) and a Celtic Wedding Set.
"I wanted to take the hammered dulcimer to the edge of possibility." Maggie says. "With my producer Bobby Read, we created multi layer textures and explored sounds produced with the expanded range and versatility of both the chromatic dulcimer with damper pedals and the dense ornamentation, unique playing style, techniques and scales associated with the Persian santur." Her introduction in the CD booklet further explains, "Since recording A Travelers Dream, I have been exploring the interconnection music expresses between people of all cultures. Along my musical journey, I discovered how closely we're all drawn together by music's universal language. Mystic Dance, Persian Dialogue and Improvisation express an exchange between musical instruments from two distant cultures, related by a common mystical thread. The Celtic Wedding Set is a tribute to all the joyous occasions at which I have performed. Enjoy another chapter in my life-long musical journey

Great music - fun to singalong.......2007-03-10
I felt this was well worth the cost -- there are a lot of songs on here. I love that we can sing along to music that isn't sacchrine, dumb-downed, kids music and I like the historical nature of the tunes (the liner notes are great -- they give background on the May festival and each song has a few sentences of background, as well as providing the lyrics. There are a few songs that are instrumental, but most have singing).
Another album my family is enjoying is Dean Shostack Davy Crockett's Fiddle - they are instrumental early American fiddle tunes.
Very fresh and fun........2001-09-06

The Maestro.......2005-07-25
Music is always open to interpretation. Segovia was a great player and to understand the history of the classical guitar one must have listened to Segovia. He created the yardstick by which others are now measured.
This set not only includes great works played by the Maestro, it also includes Segovia speaking of his own life with the guitar. It is worth having along with other, more modern, gifted players such as Williams, Bream, Parkening and others who followed in the Maestro's footsteps.
Has anyone ever created melodies like this from a guitar?.......2003-07-21
The Anton Rubinstein of Guitarist.......2003-06-15
Technically, the subtleties and the phenomenon could partly be attributed to his insistence on the use of the fleshy part, instead of the hard part of his thumb. Like Arrau and Horszowski on the piano or Menuhin on the violin: they always stuck to the hardest way aiming at the best result.
The remastered sound is wonderful. I'm not particularly keen about the narrative part though.
I AGREE.......2003-02-21
this once was a great recording........2002-11-10
owes great respect to Segovia, but the reason I gave this recording such a low rating is a simple matter of evolution. Unlike instruments like the violin, the classical guitar as we know it today is a very young instrument (+-1 century). It also didn't get the recognition it deserved untill segovia came along. From that moment on, the classical guitar's popularity increased immensely, actually it is still growing. As a logical result of this growing popularity, the quality of the technique improved and interpretations were refined.
Though Segovia was incredible guitarist in his time and situation (he was the ONLY international preformer that played this instrument), it would just be irrational to claim that the dozens of great preformers later on never improved compared to segovia. It's like denying that einstein's theories are more accurate than those of Isaac Newton, because Newton was the rock on wich fysics were mostly build.
These recordings are interesting for those who would like to do some historical research on the classical guitar, but for those who just want to listen to a good preformance, I would really recommend the more recent recordings (Russel, Fisk, Sollscher,...).

Album Description
A champion in a rising generation of Scottish fiddlers, Bonnie is called "the piping fiddler" for her evocative renditions of Highland bagpipe music. Here she returns to her roots in a celebration of the women of Scotland. With ancient Gaelic airs, strathspeys and reels of today's Scotland, performed on Scottish fiddle & viola with Highland bagpipe, uilleann pipes, wire-strung Celtic harp, guitar, cittern, cello, bodhran, snare & bass drum. Praised by the Washington Post who said,""Both a classically-trained violinist and three-time US National Fiddle Champion, Rideout uses these twin disciplines to combine an impeccable sense of intonation, timbre and phrasing with the imagination to spin variations on repeating folk themes...She has used these linked skills to tackle not only the fiddle tradition of Scottish music but the pipe tradition as well...She forgoes the heated flamboyance of popular fiddlers in favor of a cooler, more meditative approach...Rideout brings the elegant severity of chamber music to the repertoire, eschewing frilly embellishments for strong, clean lines."Customer Reviews:

Irish folk music classics PLUS newer material.......2007-03-19
This set includes some of my favorite Irish folk music. My grandparents were from Ireland, and this is the artist whose vinyl albums they played the most. The entire first CD, Irish Party, was recorded live at the John Barleycorn pub in New York (circa 1970?) as the album was originally released on vinyl LP. What a pleasure it is to listen to 30 years later without all the pops and clicks heard on the old LP--yet it still conveys the warmth and charm of the pub atmosphere. Paddy Noonan's accordian work is superb, accompanied by singers with genuine gaelic accents and an upright piano.
The second CD, "Irish Dew", is half newer material and half older recordings that also used to be on LP and were made about the same time as "Irish Party"--again at the John Barleycorn. Whether you listen to Irish music all year long or just on St. Patrick's day, this is a great set to have in your Irish music rotation!
