Another masterpiece from Anonymous 4.......2003-02-16

For me what sets apart an Anonymous 4 recording, besides the wongerful singing is the presentation of a coherent program that only enhances the listening enjoyment. This disc contains anonymous chansons and conducti--with the exception of the "Beata viscera" of Perotin. These enchanting hymns and songs to the virgin Mary are vividly brought to life by the ensemble. I highly recommend this recording.

The child-like simplicity beguiles the music's endless array of intricacies
and subtleties. The crisp phrasing, exquisite nuances, poingnant details of haunting beauty is heard throughout the disc. Perotin and Notre Dame over all, were lyrics of the first water.

In this recording which dates from 1984 ( like in the previous " Rainbow " CD ) CARAVELLI introduces new rhythm arragements updating his sound into the '80. ( followings CD will include rhythm arragements in collaboration with Gil Gambus, S Planchon, and his own son Patrick Vasori ). This CD includes a selection of famous French songs from "La Mer" (Beyond The Sea ) with a fine introduction on acoustic piano, to a refresing "Cést Si Bon" with rich rhythm and brass. Also we can listen one own composition, " Le Soleil de la Vie" with an appealing melody ( please remember CARAVELLI has composed the famous "Let me try again" which before the Paul Anka title was originally " Laisse moi le temps " ). A CD to enjoy.

This first volume in a series that "explores the riches of French and English music between the 12th and 15th centuries" features excellent examples of tuneful and rhythmically engaging pieces from a vast repertoire of secular and sacred songs. Some selections are in French, others are in Latin; most are for three or four voices, although there are a few solo and two-part songs. Several instrumental "estampies," played on medieval fiddle, add color to the program. Although the music itself is entertaining--especially in these excellent performances by one of the world's preeminent early music ensembles--it's also fun to follow the texts, which, along with their beguiling melodies, often deal quaintly but seriously--and often desperately--with love and courtship. This disc is a perfect introduction to a fascinating musical world that speaks directly to the senses. --David Vernier

Early music with instant appeal........2000-12-13

The tuneful simplicity of the works on this disc, the first in an outstanding series by Page and his excellent ensemble, is bracing and refreshing. The program is well-balanced for listening to all the way through, with solo and duet pieces nicely mixed in with full ensemble selections. Anyone who is in doubt about the diversity of mood and sound of early music should hear the imagination, personality, and skill Page and the Gothic Voices bring to every track on this disc.
