Probably one of the best CDs of the Early Nineties.......2005-08-14

And I don't just mean Italian CDs, I mean rock/pop CDs. Come L'Acqua (Like the Water) finds the lyrical maestro at the top of his, now, 20 year form, augmented with some of the best session players from italy and the UK. Think Sting, but less inhibited, less gloomy. Mediterraneo is a classic, and there are wonderful bryan ferryesque type production touches - very lush, with some honest rock mixed into the Italian lyricism. A true find. Great, enduring music.

Yes, magical is a good word to describe Come L'Acqua. In just the opening stanzas this CD transports the listener to another world. Mango's voice is ephemeral, melodic, and powerful which is a rare blend and listening experience. Uocchie 'E 'Stu Munno, sung in the Neapolitan dialect, is earthy, strong, and soulful, showing the range of this artist both in composition and performance. Il Condor rounds out the CD with a beautiful waltz. The whole CD is truly a gem and such a wonderful diversion from American music.

If you've never heard Armando Mango this is a great entry point. A haunting, almost dark feeling captures many of the best songs. It is all in Italian but the feeling is accessible to anyone who feels.

I've owned this album for 5 years and still find the songs have not lost their magic.

Lotte Lehmann in her Prime.......2006-07-08

Lotte Lehmann is one of the great German sopranos of the Twentieth Century. For many years, from her creation of the role of the Composer in the revised version of Richard Strauss's "Ariadne auf Naxos" in 1916 up to her departure in 1937 prior to the Nazi occupation of Austria, she was a star at the Vienna State Opera and a darling of the Viennese audience. She was also enthusiatically received at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, as well as the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

During the years of her prime Lehmann created a couple of Strauss's operatic heroines, including the Dyer's Wife in "Die Frau Ohne Schatten" and Christine in "Intermezzo." She also sang a great variety of roles ranging from Wagner's romantic heroines to the Italian verisimo parts by Giordano and Puccini. Puccini was said to have been one of her bigget admirers, especially for her renditions of Mimi in La boheme and Suor Angelica. However, her most famous roles were the Marshallin in Strauss's "Der Rosenkavalier" and Sieglinde in Wagner's "Die Walkure." This Preiser issue documents accoustic recordings of nearly all her more renowned roles, made between 1914 and 1925.

Although Lehmann later made more amenable electrical recordings of many of the arias here, as well as excerpts from "Der Rosenkavalier" and Acts One and Two of "Die Walkure," these accoustic recordings more often than not show her in fresher voice with a joyous freedom on top. Her hallmarks as a singing-actress, such as her always vivid enunciation of the text and her great variety of tonal colors and moods, are also evident even in the earliest of these recordings.

This set is one of the gems in Preiser's famous historic singers series and anyone interested in operatic singing should consider investing in this set. The CD transfer unavoidably contains some surface noise but the vibrancy and color of Lehmann's voice are faithfully recaptured.

Operaphiles in search of the lost art of the bel canto baritone will find a virtual holy grail in the form of Mattia Battistini. Born in 1856, he is the oldest singer of his generation who recorded extensively in his prime. In contrast to the emphatic, overt emotionalism typical of verismo singers, Battistini spins out effortless, lavishly decorated lines, sustained by virtue of prodigious breath control. Introspective phrases are embellished by unexpected accents and flamboyant, dynamic surges, best exemplified in a 1906 group of Ernani excerpts. Of all the Galli-Curci CD reissues, I put this one first. Romophone seems to have reissued her complete recorded output, in superb Ward Marston productions, but this set, comprising her 1916-1920 recordings, shows her best qualities. Don't be deterred by the early dates. Galli-Curci's voice was recorded by the acoustic process more successfully than almost any other singer of her era. She continued making records until 1930 but by then her glory days had passed.

On one day in 1917 she made three recordings, two of which are her greatest. They are the arias from "Il Barbiere di Siviglia" (Track 16) and "La Sonnambula" (Track 18). Also included in this reissue is her participation in the "Rigoletto" Quartet and the "Lucia di Lammermoor" Sextet (two takes) with an ensemble including Caruso, with whom she sang only two performances in stage, and several duets with the baritone Giuseppe de Luca, a frequent partner at the Met.

So what are "her best qualities", referred to above, and do they merit the considerable outlay necessary to buy this 2 CD set? Vocal agility is the most remarkable. A bird-like trill is executed beautifully and easily, in both an upper and lower register. All sounds fall easily on the ear. Galli-Curci was one of the great gramophone coloraturas. Here are 43 of her recordings, cleanly and faultlessly projected, available at merely a fraction of their original purchase price.

Heere is something different.......2000-08-18

Vinci's buffo opera is given a warm and intriguing performance in this set. (The Gramophone review accompanying this listing is for some different work.) Though clearly early 18th century, the music has strong reminiscences of earlier traditions, and the work has quite a different mixing of orchestral and other accompaniment patterns from other comtemporary works with which I am familiar. The work exhibits a wide variety of mood and tone within the context of the opera buffa. By and large the singing is distinguished, though often with a rather harsh edge possibly representing the common nature of the drama and the Napolitan dialect. I enjoyed this set as much as I do recordings of Vivaldi. It is intriguing, different and well done,
