Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars la grande dame of Romanian song.......2001-12-22

Maria Tanase remains unique. She is both authentic and stylish, with deep knowledge of Romanian authentic folklore (yes, I remember the wax cylinders recordings from the country side). Her impeccable regional language subtleties, her perfect French accent and ennunciation are characteristic of her amazing talent, hard work and artistry. She is passionate, in control and has a great sense of humor when singing about love, wine, handsome men and beautiful women. More CD's from her old Electrecord LP's please!

5 out of 5 stars Passionate and dark.......2001-11-29

Romanian people proudly call Maria Tanase their own Edith Piaf, but in fact she is better than Edith Piaf, because her style has the arabian and gypsy influences that give Romanian culture the edge over France in terms of both passion and surrealism. I can't understand a word of what she is saying but I'm telling you the music is beautiful. A few Romanian websites provide free mp3's of some of these songs if you want to get a sample.
