5 out of 5 stars Essential for the chansom junkie. Buy It........2006-10-25

'Poulenc Melodies' performed by a really impressive lineup of vocal talent including Elly Ameling and Nicolai Gedda is exactly the kind of recording you need if you are compulsive about having 'complete' collections of things. This shows a range of composition which smaller releases such as single CD 'Voyage a Paris' (Hyperion, with Felicity Lott and Graham Johnson)can give us. For starters, many of these chansom showed a lot more evidence of more modern stylings and a far greater range of interpretation. In fact, I even had to check the lyrics in the included booklet to verify that on some songs, the performers were singing in French. Even though I have a smattering of knowledge of French, I would have sworn that the singers were performing songs in Russian.

I am happy that all four discs run for more than 60 minutes. No cheap short changing here. If you don't want to spring for the large set, the Hyperion release is great, but this is worth every penny.

4 out of 5 stars Almost completely wonderful.......2005-04-29

Its very considerable advantage lies in its completeness. Poulenc was one of the very greatest songwriters of any era. If you have no Poulenc songs in your collection, start here. The recommendation of Kruysen is a fine one, but only after you have heard this as a basis of comparison. Of Ameling, Senechal, Souzay, Gedda, and Parker, the only disappointment is Parker, who - I'll just say it - sings with his usual bleat. Souzay is a shade past it in vocal quality, but he still understands these songs as well as anybody, with great declamation (and that, after all, is what most of French singing is about). The dryness of the voice is nowhere close to disastrous, as it might have been in Italian opera. Indeed, it lends an air of life lived, without excuses. Gedda is okay. The standouts are Souzay, Ameling, and Senechal. Baldwin accompanies superbly.

5 out of 5 stars Indisputable Gallic flair.......2004-06-06

These performances are piquant and stylistically right on target. Even if Souzay is past his best here, he brings a lifetime of experience to bear and the other performers are wonderful. Ignore the curmudgeon who blasted this set. You will enjoy this tremendously if you love Poulenc.

4 out of 5 stars Idiomatic, fresh, cleanly recorded.......2001-05-12

This is a fine set. Dalton Baldwin accompanies each singer with clarity and zest. And who can resist the affectionate singing of the likes of Nicolai Gedda and Elly Ameling? The "melodies" themselves are magnificent--among Poulenc's finest creations. Whether you have other performances of these works or not, I think you'd be pleased with this beautifully recorded set. Certainly the 70's-vintage performances are more individual in profile, more "romantic," if you will, than those conjured by most of the "anonymous" singers of our own age. Recommended with enthusiasm.

2 out of 5 stars the best songs ever ruined by uneven performing.......2001-05-05

This is a warning for all Poulenc fans NOT to take the bargain route and purchase this immense collection -- you might think you're getting a great deal but: the singing and pianism is substandard and doesn't do the music justice (remotely). Songs like Bonne Journe'e or Ho^tel are all but ruined... Here's what to buy: Bernard Kruysen's CD of selected Poulenc masterpieces (favoring the Elouard settings)... nobody will ever come close to Kruysen in interpreting Poulenc. Avoid THIS CD. They still get 2 stars for (1) being encyclical and (2) delivering clear and even sound quality.

4 out of 5 stars Bizarre and intriguing music.......2003-12-10

The works of Clement Janequin are somewhat neglected, despite there being an ensemble dedicated to him (the Janequin Ensemble perform on this album). This is unfortunate, because Janequin was one of the strangest and most interesting composers of pre-Baroque music. Some of his songs--particularly the title track--are full of bizarre vocal effects which add both impressive virtuosity and humor to his compositions. This is a good selection of music performed by a good ensemble, although the whiny, nasal voice of countertenor Dominique Visse is ever-present.

roaching the French style and an interpretation that reaches the listener. To understand what I mean, compare her version of "Mignon" with that sung by Sophie Marin-Dego on the CD "Vivent les vacances" - what a difference! (That album, by the way, is one I very highly recommend.)

The first CD of this set comprises only some of Gounod's French songs (sung by the two women), and the second CD consists entirely of the Biondina cycle (sung in Italian) and Gounod's "English" songs (sung in English). As Anthony Rolfe Johnson doesn't even sing any songs in French in this set, it's rather unfair to make any assumptions about his French. I thought the Biondina often sounded ravishing, and if I was left wishing for more urgency and variation in some of the songs in this cycle, that and the very English accent remain my sole caveats.

It was the English songs on this set that made me most uncomfortable. All three singers essay these songs in the rather bombastic style that has hamstrung English ballad singers throughout the last century. The "r"s are rolled (overly so); the approach is often coy and school-ma'am-ish; the timbres seem to slip into Savoy Opera G&S style... and in my opinion does not serve the music as well as would a more straightforward and elegant approach. It doesn't help that the lyrics are mostly pretty dreadful...! Why, oh why didn't Gounod use some better quality poetry?

Overall, it's undeniable that this is not a representation of French songs sung with impeccable French style. That's true. But the singing itself is often lovely, and certainly Graham Johnson's playing is beautiful - I do agree that the playing was sometimes stodgier than I felt it should be, but this reflects the tempi chosen by the singers.

In all, in spite of the stylistic lack and the English pronunciation of the French, this remains an often beautifully sung set, containing otherwise unavailable recordings of comparatively rare songs in the discography. (Why is Gounod so infrequently recorded? It is strange.) And for those reasons, this is a set worth having.

I would actually give this 3 and a half stars, but I do think 3 stars is a little unfair... so 4 stars let it be.

3 out of 5 stars If one track is worth US$50. . ........2005-01-18

If one track is worth fifty bucks then you should definitely buy it. I am referring to the "Song of Spring" surely one of the few happy melodies out of Gounod and regrettably out of print in its master recording (E. Ameling, D. Baldwin, Soiree Francaise, 1985). Song of Spring pops up often in many critical studies: see, e.g., Camera Lucida, by R. Barthes who referred to it in his "wintergarten" passage. To this day, it still invites reflection. The passage of flats and diminished sevenths throughout the otherwise joyful song could only be interpolated by a composer and harmonist who, like J. Strauss, had lived life and the song still deserves, as the above critic suggests, to be sung by a younger woman speckled with the odor of chrysanthemums.

2 out of 5 stars Gounod needs style, charm.......2004-12-05

Anybody who has heard one of the better Gounod songs sung by the likes of Reynaldo Hahn, Ninon Vallin, Charles Panzéra, Pierre Bernac or Gérard Souzay will know how extremely lovely and hard to sing they are!

They require a full technique-what Gérard Souzay has called "French bel canto"-to do justice to their delicate and elaborate melodies; a perfect sense of STYLE constructed on an idiomatic command of ennunciation; an elegant musicianship; last, but emphatically not least, they require CHARM, an elusive feeling impossible to coach.

Study a few of those older interpreters, and you will understand immediately, in a few measures, why some people-among them Maurice Ravel-thought Charles-Marie Gounod the father of French art song.

It is nice to have this collection by three respected British singers in superb, though somewhat overresonant, digital sound. They are musical, somewhat slack perfomances in high-school French. They totally lack any sense of what the music is about, however, or any of the sensuous elegance the music requires. The worst offender is the tenor, whose dry little voice-what is known in the operatic world as a tenorino comprimario-is completely lacking in charm or aural appeal. His Italian, in the Biondina cycle, is awful.

The women are a bit better, but sound none-too-young.

The pianist, who is the brain behind this whole series of Hyperion song recordings, is a good player with an ear for the lovely phrase, but tends to take everything far too slowly: the nascent love of the singer for the lovely Biondina, and his funereal lamentations for her demise, towards the end of the cycle, sound exactly alike! That is certainly NOT Gounod's fault.

Listen to Reynaldo Hahn's one recoding from this cycle, and you will understand immediately why this collection will really not do.

The psychedelic sixties was all about experimenting...the clothes...the lifestyles..the attitudes...and most certainly the music. The sixties changes the way we heard and saw everything in the world.

4 out of 5 stars Superb rendition of neglected French Songs.......1998-12-08

This disk contains some exquisite art songs by Massenet and Gounod, many of which I have never seen in other French art song collections. They are interspersed with the songs of two 20th century composers, Louis Beydts and Maurice Delage. Beydts's music is quite lyrical and tonal, reminiscent of the later songs of Reynaldo Hahn - the real jewel is his "L'Oiseau Bleu" (also the title of the CD). Delage's is slightly more modernistic - I think his subtle French wit is lost a bit on me. The high point of this disk is Zimmer's performance of the Massenet songs. It is no wonder the most singers have ignored these songs, the lyrical melodic lines that soar thru the upper register must be quite a feat, and Zimmer makes them sound effortless. She sings Massenet with the same technical brilliance as Beverly Sills and with incredible clarity of tone and warmth.

      5 out of 5 stars A lovely recital.......2000-03-14

If you, like me, consider Dame Felicity Lott one of the warmest, most endearing recitalists now singing, you must purchase this marvelous CD. If you do not know who Ms. Lott is, or have never heard her but love to hear the glories of the human voice, this CD is also for you. I have over 200 lieder CD's and records in my collection, but "My Garden" is the recital CD that I turn to most often when I want to hear a superlative female singer interpret a group of varied songs in an absolutely charming way. In "My Garden," Ms. Lott chooses songs in German, French, and English which deal with gardens, flowers, and, even, in one song, delicious vegetables. We hear songs by Schumann like "Mein Garden" ("My Garden") and "Die Blume der Ergebung" ("The Flower of Resignation"); Wolf's exquisite "Anakreons Grab" ("The Grave of Anacreon") with its roses and laurel; a group of French songs by Franck, Chausson, Faure, and Chabrier; and irresistable songs by British composers' Sir Charles Villiers Stanford, Haydn Wood, ("Roses of Picardy"), the eccentric Lord Berners ("Red Roses and Red Noses") and even a British Music Hall song, "Cabbages, Cabeans, and Carrots," which is sung ("styled" is perhaps a better word) by Dame Lott with charming fervor! Then there are the American composers, Seymour Barab (setting a poem by Dorothy Parker entitled "One Perfect Rose"), and two songs by the wonderful John Musto, one of which is set to a poem by Robert Frost ("The Rose Family.") This is all very lovely music, superbly sung by Dame Felicity Lott with the usual magnificent piano accompaniment by Graham Johnson. There is nothing more a lieder enthusiast could ask for. I have heard Ms. Lott several times in recital, and, I must say, this CD perfectly recreates one of her lieder concerts. The beautifully warm voice is present, and her charm and brilliance are captured on this Hyperion CD. I might add that the CD is an excellent introduction t FastTrack Alto Saxophone Songbook - Level 1 (Fast Track (Hal Leonard))
