3 out of 5 stars Selectively Worthwhile.......2006-01-22

This chestnut from Butch Baldassari's Nashville Mandolin Ensemble is a mixed bag. Parts of it are very much worth a listen. I particularly like their rendition of the Allman Brothers classic "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed," and while their take on Hoagy Carmichael's "Stardust" isn't transcendent, it's pretty sharp. It's especially noteworthy how much sound the ensemble is able to get out of only six instruments with a fairly narrow range of sound.

But not all of it bears up to repeated listening. The "Bluegrass" section of the album is worthwhile, but the "Bach>>Beatles" part is awkward. The renditions of "Sleepers Awake" and "With a Little Help From My Friends" sound really thin, and the "Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring," one of the more enduringly moving pieces from Bach's body of work, comes across as kind of sleepy. The sound the ensemble gets out of their instruments is big, but not varied, and especially on the three classical pieces that kick of the album, the effect is an unearned sense of being almost tepid.

Because it's fairly inexpensive, this album is probably worth getting for the second half of the playlist, which is very much listenable. But if you're going to play the album more than once you need to be selective in your listening. Worthwhile but spotty, this album is a valiant addition to the canon of mandolin music, but not something that will rest permanently in your CD changer.

5 out of 5 stars Monstrously good!.......2005-05-25

Playing Time - 50:51 -- With over a decade under their belts, The Nashville Mandolin Ensemble has now trimmed down to a tight-knit and lean sextet for their fourth album, a presentation of 15 numbers recorded live at Vanderbilt University. The group features mando-family instruments (mandolins, mandola, mandocello) supplemented with 5-string viola, guitar and bass. The artists include Butch Baldassari, Stephan Dudash, Walter Carter, John Hedgecoth, Van Manakas, and David Spicher. In keeping with the program and album's title ("Bach, Beatles, Bluegrass"), the album opens with three neat classical Bach compositions, followed by three meaty selections from John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

The "bluegrass" is much more than just that with tunes from the genres of jazz, Gypsy, swing, Dawg, new acoustic and old-time music. Contempoary compositions from mandolinist Charlie Provenza and guitarist Roger Hudson are first-rate-and-a-half. It's amazing to hear what these hot pickers do with a number like "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed," written by Dickey Betts, who was lead guitarist with the Allman Brothers in the sixties and seventies. Then, they can also evoke images of a moonlit evening at a café in Paris with their simply dee-lish appeteaser, "Nuages" from Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. It's a joy to hear musicians of this caliber take on a wide range of material from "Stardust" to "Happy Birthday, Bill Monroe." Ensemble member Butch Baldassari contributes a bouncy original "Jack Rabbit Trail," which provides some icing for this mandocake. Not losing sight of their roots, two traditional numbers close out the album. Walter Carter, mandola player, is deserving of special recognition for his quality and classy arranging of seven of the songs. For a live recording, the sound quality is excellent and fortunately no annoying audience applause is included. This album is monstrously good, and it is further proof that Nashville currently sports one of the finest mandolin ensembles in the world. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

5 out of 5 stars This album is a treasure.......2005-11-08

I have to say, I was not much of a Bobby McFerrin fan prior to hearing this album. I knew him only from the "Don't Worry, Be Happy" song, and not much else. However, McFerrin's voice is simply amazing, with an instrument, no, many instruments, that flow from his vocal chords. The album is hypnotic, with McFerrin's soothing and mellow vibe and Nicholson's oh-so-cool deep voice, and perfect inflection, narrating. Oh, not to mention Kipling's trippy, almost psychodelic story, which is just magical. This album is out of print, unfortunately, and the album that is currently in print with the same title is missing many McFerrin's solo musical tracks (as I have read from other reviewers). I tried buying a copy, anywhere, but was unable to find one, even on Ebay. I ended up finding it a local library, so maybe you can do the same. Also, please listen to Nicholson/McFerrin's version of Kiplings, "The Elephant Child", which is also unfortunately out of print. This album is a gem and a treasure. It is magic for children and adults alike.

5 out of 5 stars The art of brain candy; Jack tells a story.......2003-07-26

Between the three artists involved here- Rudyard Kipling's little gems, Bobby McFerrin's otherworldly sounds and songs, and Jack Nicholson's soft, slow, meditative readings- this recording should be on the top of the list for every fan of the spoken word.
The "Just So Stories" were Kiplings finest work in many ways, free of the Jingoism that flaws his adventure novels. Each one is a pean of love for his child. These 'splanations of how the world came to be as it is meet the requirements for a classic fable, adorned with little twists that will have you shaking your head and laughing in recognition- all these many years later.
Mcferrin's vocalizations were at their peak around this time. Here they range from dance rhythms that will get your hips moving- to space-ship sounds of the wind in a lonely desert. Knowing that his only instrument is his body adds to the fun your ears have.
Nicholson is, of course, celebrated for his voice- that soft, sly and sarcastic inflection that, no matter what he's just said, has you searching for the hidden meaning. His readings are slow, here. He puts long spaces between the phrases, spaces for your mind to fill with ideas, like the white spaces in a coloring book.
I have to say that I haven't any young children left in my house to try this recording on. But don't use that as an excuse not to try it- my teens really enjoyed it. For the adults, it's a psychedelic journey and a perfect thing to listen to while your hands are busy.

5 out of 5 stars simply the best..........2003-03-13

take my word... you'll only be the richer for having listened to these wonderfully woven tales. master story-teller rudyard kipling would have been proud. not only will children love it, but parents as well. jack nicholson's soft voice will leave you holding your breath waiting for more. and bobby mcferrin's voices/noises/songs will sweep you away to the places where the stories unfold.

be sure to check out "the elephant's child" as well. another kipling story done by nicholson and mcferrin.

i used to listen to the recordings of these three stories with my brother when we were younger. they were on vinyl and unfortunately were lost or sold over the years. until a couple of years ago, when i came across a audio cassette that my mother had made for travels in the car. i made a few more copies (in case one gets damaged) and share them with as many people as possible. i've tried ordering them through regular music stores, whether they're part of a chain or independant, and couldn't get them ANYWHERE. i'm so glad that they're available here for others to share with their friends and family.

    Album Description

Jack Rabbit Slim is one of the most exciting and hottest bands ever to come out of the UK. Singer Bob Butfoy was previously fronting the well respected Bob & The Bearcats and other band members include ex-Rusti Steel drummer Paul Sanders. The album contains 14 tracks and 11 of which were written by Bob. I put 3 of these tracks on a recent Western Star compilation and the track 'Cherry Pie' has caused a real stir winning airplay on both Radio Caroline and BBC radio. BBC Broadcaster Geoff Barker said of this track "I'm sure this band will take the scene by storm. What a devastating sound'!"

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD to pass long car rides with kids!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2001-07-25

I have 2 small children under the age of 5 and they enjoy listening to this CD over and over again. They ask for it every time we get in the car! And this isn't one of those annoying kids' CDs that adults hide after a while. It is actually well told by the talented actor, Michael Palin, who is quite funny in his own right. I highly reccomend this CD for car rides with kids - especially for the long summer car trip varieties! In general, we own about 4 "Rabbit Ears" CDs and they are all entertaining and "adult friendly". But most of all, my 2 kids LOVE them! (and we get some peace and quiet in the car!)

5 out of 5 stars This Jack tops the Beanstalk.......2000-04-25

When my five-year-old discovered Jack's tale at preschool, we ended up bringing home every version available at our local library. Of course some were much better than others. I soon decided that if I was going to be reading about Jack twelve times a day (my two-year-old by now had captured his sister's passion for the tale), I needed to find the best written, most readable version available. Having long been a fan of Rabbit Ears Radio and Rabit Ears Publishing, I did a little deeper search and found this edition. My recommendation? Of the twenty or so Jacks we have read (and read, and read. . . ) in the past few weeks, this is the one I purchased for our family's collection. I would highly recommend other books by this publisher, as well.
