High School Musical : The Songs.......2007-06-13
Did you like the High School Musical movie? If so, try the soundtrack! It's the same great songs, singers and fun. Every song (there is eleven) is the same as in the movie except now there is a chance for you to multi-task while enjoying the same singers from the film. Some include Mathew Gerrard, Ray Cham, Adam Watts, Faye Greenberg, Jamie Houston and Kevin Quinn. I really enjoy these songs because they describe what is going on in the movie. For example: when Troy is playing basketball (Get'cha Head in the Game), Ryan and Sharpay's callback song (Bop to the Top) or when Troy and Gabriella meet each other (Start of Some thing New).
I really enjoy these songs. I have memorized each and every one of them and sing along when I listen to this CD. Every song has a catchy tune, so soon, you'll be singing along too. With a High School Musical soundtrack, you can even sing along when you watch the movie. My favorite song is "When There was me and you". It is when Troy and Gabriella don't think they should go to callbacks. Just a little bit after this song they decide to go to callbacks.
I recommend this soundtrack for those who like the movie, High School Musical. The songs are a mix of upbeat, sad or just plain silly. Everyone will enjoy these just as much as they liked they movie. Those who haven't seen the movie will want to see it after listening to this soundtrack.

lacking heart and real emotion.......2007-08-02
the story line alone is enough to make one cringe. however, a loose plot is something that musicals are known for, so i can overlook the lack of coherance. the biggest problem to me is, well the music. the music lacks heart and emotion. im not saying that a musical needs to be filled with crooning ballads, i just want some kind of emotion. without true feeling, a musical tanks; as an audience we cant understand the depth that would push a character into song. the movie attempts emotion in a couple of places with great failure. "when there was you and me" feels like a cross between an after-school special and a bad britney spears song. "breaking free" lacks any weight of power since it has no context what so ever, its suppossed to be taken out of the show they are auditioning for. yes there are some subtle sub-texts but they fail too. the attempt at a hip-hop esque song ("getcha head in the game") just feels like selling out to try and appeal to a young group. the only showtune-y song is "stick to the status quo" which does ok musically.
worse than the songs are the performers. they all sound squeeky and/or nasaly. all in all, this musical is a complete pop sell out. it has no emotion that a musical needs, it is just bad pop music and the whole thing feels like a crappy music video. parents should steer clear of this one. if you want to get your kids some quality soundtracks, just look into alan menkens work for disney. it's not even fair to compare this trivial garbage with other musical works.
Um, I hate to burst the Zac Efron bubble..........2007-07-25
Disney's new magic?.......2007-07-18
Ever since it hit Disney Channel a year and a half ago, it simply became another part of culture, going from a movie-musical to a concert, rerealeased CDs, special-edition DVDs, T-shirts, a stage production, a summer sequel, and all the singers became instantly famous.
In my area a theatre school gathered teens from local high schools to professionally preform HSM, and the show literally was an enormous sellout, an audience filled with six-year-olds and sixteen-year-olds. But what is it about HSM that is different that any other musical? Yes, it was on TV and publicized, but isn't Disney the same company that produced The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Tony-Award Winning smashes? I am not afraid to admit that HSM could not stand up next to The Lion King's talent and beauty. Maybe it's just the magic of Disney to be able to pull off songs that were pretty much pop-rock cliches and glamourize not-exactly-Broadway-worthy preformers.
So, if HSM wasn't as stunning as other shows, why 4 stars and how did this HSM phenomenon really happen? The story was good, about teens finding their way and discovering that "we're all in this together". It exposed many children to the magic of musicals, and hopefully inspires them to listen to showtunes, too. It's simply a fun, easygoing show, a movie I can sit down and watch just for kicks any time and not have to go to a theatre to see, and something every kid can relate to.
The success of High School Musical may have also helped spawn shows like Hairspray and Footloose to travel to the screen so those who aren't theatre buffs can still go enjoy a good show without the hundred-dollar ticket price. It may not have the wow of Wicked or the brilliance of Rent, but in a way I don't think it was meant to. HSM carries it's own unique beauty, which is why I guess I really can't compare it to Wicked, Rent, and The Lion King. It has its own special...magic.
It may just be the start of something new for Disney.

It's always a pleasant surprise when a soundtrack contains an interesting collection of under-heard or under-appreciated tunes, but it's to be expected from Grey's Anatomy--a TV show that is packed with sharp dialogue, honest characters, and wall-to-wall good music. The head-bobbing starts immediately when the Postal Service opens things up "Such Great Heights," a crafty track that will provide indie rock fans who still love the Pet Shop Boys their guilty fix. A few songs in, the cleverness continues with the dysfunctional-woman anthem "Portions for Foxes" by L.A.'s Rilo Kiley, a tune that will have you quoting sharp lyrics to Desperate girlfirends for days. Other must-have music includes Mike Doughty (former lead singer of Soul Coughing) with "Looking At The World From The Bottom Of A Well," and the gorgeous Bjork-meets-Cat-Power stylings of Inara George on the lucious "Fools In Love." The disc highlight (from a talented vocalist named Roisin Murphy) is the sassy "Ruby Blue"--the kind of Macy Gray-funk that makes you want to see her live, immediately. As an added bonus, the liner notes have a wonderful mini-essay by two of the executive producers, providing an enjoyable description of the show's attention to detail, and the cast and crew's deep love of music. --Denise SheppardAlbum Description
The "Grey's Anatomy" soundtrack features an eclectic mix of indie pop and rock artists whose music was heard during the first season of Grey's Anatomy--a wildly popular ABC drama about surgical interns in Seattle. The soundtrack features electrifying music from such beloved indie artists as Rilo Kiley, The Postal Service, Ben Lee, and Medeski, Martin & Wood, as well as undiscovered talent such as London-based electropop duo Psapp, who supply the show's main title song "Cosy in the Rocket."
The album's tracks, many of which can be heard during key emotional scenes in various episodes, were chosen by the show's creator and executive producer, Shonda Rhimes and executive producer Betsy Beers, from a large pool of artists introduced to them by music supervisor Alex Patsavas, who is also the music supervisor of Fox's The O.C.. "We fall in love with the songs," says Rhimes. "We ride around listening to them in our cars. We call each other to talk about them on the phone. We get them into our heads and into our souls. And then we weave them into the show because we can't live without them."

Waiting room music..........2007-05-08
But I cannot fault the makers of this show for the music they select, a mingling of mellow rock and shimmering indiepop. A bunch of glorious lesser-known bands -- Psapp, the Ditty Bops, Maria Taylor -- get to take the spotlight in the first volume, and they generally complement each other beautifully.
It opens on a high note -- the Postal Service's fuzzy, intimate little trip-hop song, with the enchanting lyrics, "I am thinking it's a sign/That the freckles in our eyes/Are mirror images and when we kiss/They're perfectly aligned... And when you scan the radio/I hope this song will guide you home..."
They follow it up with some other indie gems: Roisin Murphy's thumpy trippy funk, Maria Taylor's shimmering, swirling "not a love song," Tegan & Sara's prickly guitar pop, Inara George's mellow Mazzy-Starrish ballad, and the Ditty Bops' sprightly little alt-country with pleasant harmonies.
And there's rockier numbers as well -- the Radio's swirling guitars, Ben Lee's mellotron folk, and Martin Medeski's brooding party rocker. And finally, there's the most electronic song on here -- Psapp's exquisitely twinkly "Cosy in a Rocket," which sounds like a music box in a science fiction flick.
It's been chic for a few years to have lots of indie rock and pop in soundtracks, especially if you can work them into a hit TV show's soundtrack. "Grey's Anatomy" is one of those shows, and even people who've never seen the show can appreciate the musical taste of whoever comes up with these things.
Granted, not every song is great -- personally, Ben Lee's "Catch My Disease" felt like a weird fit. But the majority of them are excellent pieces of work -- chilly sparkling trip-pop, sinewy guitar pop, and combinations of the two. Most of them are pretty peppy, but occasionally (Inara George) you get something mellow and relaxing.
And those swirling guitars are flavoured with little bits of keyboard, handclaps (Roisin Murphy), piano, banjo (Ditty Bops) and driving bass. The vocals are usually quite good as well -- harmonized croons, boyish odes, ringing girls' voices, bluesy growls, and yowls of "oh look what you do/oh ruby blue!" The best would have to be Maria Taylor, whose full-bodied voice is as ethereal and elusive as a winter breeze.
The first "Grey's Anatomy" soundtrack is not just a good introduction to some great artists, but a beautiful collection of solid rock and pop songs. Definitely a good buy -- even if you don't watch the show.

HBO's Mafia masterpiece The Sopranos is a remarkable television series--it's witty, creative, and truly unique. The same praises could be sung for a show's soundtrack, an odd but fun mix of beats, classic rock, and--what else?--Mafia-staple Sinatra. A3's theme "Woke Up This Morning (Chosen One Mix)" gets things off to a lively start, as does bluesman R.L. Burnside's "It's Bad You Know" (from his Come On In remix album). Bob Dylan's "Gotta Serve Somebody" (from his Slow Train Coming album), Bruce Springsteen's "State Trooper," and Elvis Costello's "Complicated Shadows" aren't tracks you'll hear on the local classic rock station, but they work perfectly here. And when was the last time you heard both Little Steven & the Disciples of Soul and Nick Lowe on TV? In short, a great, eclectic collection. --Jason VerlindeCustomer Reviews:

You've got the touch, you've got the POWER.......2007-07-24
So naturally one of my first Amazon purchases was the Transformers soundtrack, which made me fall in love with the music all over again. I love 80s rock, and this soundtrack is a classic showcase of it. Even if you don't recognize the artists (Weird Al is the only one I knew before seeing the movie), these songs will still capture the spirit of the music of that era.
My one complaint (and this is VERY minor) is that the CD case was a little cracked when I received my order. This didn't affect the CD quality, however, and having worked in a bookstore that also sold music, I know how hard it is to avoid cracking the case during shipping. Also, I doubt the CD's going to spend much time in the case anyhow -- if it isn't in my CD player, it's most likely in my portable CD case in my car.

The best Transformers soundtrack out there.......2007-07-15
I first bought the 10-track soundtrack years ago. Even that version, without the four bonus tracks, I would have rated a solid five stars. It was great car driving music and there wasn't a single track that I would skip. If you've ever seen the movie, there isn't a single song or score on here that won't immediately conjure up images in your mind of the scene that it came from.
How much better is it now that it has four new bonus tracks? For one thing, even having said I'd rate the original album with five stars, there was one score that I always felt was missing, the Unicron theme. Now that this release has cleared up that minor oversight, I have to say that this album is nearly flawless.
Nearly flawless because I must admit I do skip over the new remix of the Transformers theme. But that's just personal preference. Besides, show me any other album where I only skip over one song, and I'd still have to rate it far above most other cd's out there.
With the inclusion of the Unicron Medley, Moon Base 2 score, Megatron Must be stopped scores and the original 10-tracks which I've already stated I never skip a track, this is a solid buy for any fan of the original Transformers Movie. In fact, if you dare to call yourself a Transformers fan, than this album deserves to be in your collection.
Irresistable if you are a child of the 80's.......2007-07-12
Being more a fan of metal the tracks 'Instruments of Destruction' by NRG and 'Nothin's Gonna Stand in Our Way' by Spectre General are also stand out and it is hard not to be a fan of Kal Swan's soaring vocals on the Transformers Theme which is surely one of the best vocal tracks this guy has ever laid down.
Woven throughout these pumping rock tracks is the work of Vinnie DiCola, which is also able to transport you to various parts of the movie instantly with his talented compositions. I still get a bit misty eyed when I hear 'The Death Of Optimus Prime'.
Sheerly in terms of its nostalgic value this would have to be my favourite movie soundtrack of all time, without a doubt.

The medically minded Scrubs is an eccentric affair, populated by a zany cast of residents saving lives while learning life's little lessons in the process. Though lacking the show's oddball humor, its soundtrack is undeniably earnest, with a rich understanding of the pleasures and hardships faced by the hospital workers. The show's theme song, Lazlo Bane's quirky banjo twanger, sighs "I'm no Superman," as an uncharacteristically subdued Guided by Voices track cautions to "Hold on Hope." Ex-Men at Work frontman Colin Hay lends his sage advice with acoustic renditions of "Beautiful World" and the chestnut "Overkill," while Eels' "Fresh Feeling" begins with a tuning orchestra and turns into a tripping beatfest. The highlights, though, belong to Francis Dunnery, sounding uncannily like Peter Gabriel on the high-tea string elegance of "Good Life," and the Shins, with "New Slang," a humble campfire song. Puttering along pleasantly, Scrubs, while a little bland, is nevertheless a life-affirming collection that's as hopeful as the aspiring young doctors on the show. --Annie ZaleskiCustomer Reviews:

After Carnivàle, Jeff Beal has given HBO another Emmy-nominated score, this time for the tale of sex, politics, and togas known as Rome. There's a long history of fabulously grand scores in the sword-and-sandals genre (Miklós Rózsa's Ben-Hur, Alex North's Cleopatra) but according to Beal HBO wasn't interested in classic big orchestral compositions, so he worked on a smaller--yet still lush--scale that emphasizes the ethnic instruments that could be found in the farther reaches of the Roman Empire. A Middle Eastern influence, for instance, can clearly be heard on "Rome Main Title Theme," "The Forum" and "Janus Breaks," among many others. If there's one signature sound on the CD, it's the recurring use of the flute, which can suggest emotions ranging from romantic ("Octavian & Octavia's Themes") to melancholy (paired with strings on "Farewells, the Storm") to dread (combined with percussion on "Caesar's Seizure"). The album starts running out of steam about two thirds of the way through, however, making one pine for a bit of orchestral bang for one's buck. --Elisabeth VincentelliAlbum Description
Rome: Music from the HBO Series features a dramatic score by Emmy award winning composer Jeff Beal (Pollock, HBO's Carnivale). A haunting album of ancient sounds and rhythms, the album perfectly complements the HBO series that chronicles the epic times that saw the fall of a republic and the creation of an empire.Customer Reviews:

The score composed by Jeff Beal also added great texture and mood to the show. Using mainly instruments that existed at the time of Julius Caesar, Beal's themes remain present, yet do not draw attention away from the image.
The tracks are all compiled from the first 12-episode season and follow in a chronological order. However, there is no need for a second season soundtrack because many of the themes were recycled in very creative and useful ways. A highlight is definitely the track 'Riot in the Senate/Pullo Finds the Gold;' towards the end of the track there is sound and dialogue, (as HBO has done with several other soundtracks), of Caesar and Antony entering Rome with their army, as the musicians play a "cheerful" triumphant song for their arrival. The soundtrack overall is a great addition to HBO's list of series soundtracks.

Ennio Morricone is well-known to moviegoers. His soundtracks for The Mission, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Once Upon a Time in America, Cinema Paradiso, and others are invariably warmly melodic and superbly suited to the films they grace. They not only add atmosphere; they help tell the story. For this CD Morricone has created new orchestrations for many of his scores, adding a solo cello part for the indefatigable Yo-Yo Ma, whose musical curiosity seems to be endless. Outside the films, these pieces tend to be lovely melodies, mostly pretty sentimental stuff, and, in the best way, gorgeous aural wallpaper. The most moving are the two selections from The Mission, but fans of Morricone's music will find plenty to enjoy here. Ma's playing, as always, is exquisite---warm, deeply felt (given the circumstances), and entirely idiomatic within the context. Perhaps not quite for the classical music lover, but an affectionate reworking of music by an important film composer. --Robert LevineCustomer Reviews:
Is it bad to say I like this better than the original soundtrack?.......2007-06-02
My two other recommendations are Main Theme from ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST (Track 11) and Ecstasy of Gold from THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY (Track 12). I suggest playing these consecutively as a single medley. Track 11 *WILL* bring tears to the manliest among us --particularly if you remember in the movie where Sergio Leone pulls the camera up to reveal the town rising.
I get the feeling "hardcore" classical fans would dismiss movie scores as commercial work. I truly believe Ennio Morricone transcends that. Even moreso than, say, John Williams, and on a different plane than a Danny Elfman. And I can't say more about the emotion Yo-Yo Ma brings to the table than what's already been discussed.
