Representations of Musical Signals

Representations of Musical Signals
Editorial Reviews
Book Description
Representations of Musical Signals describes a new generation of digital audio and computer music systems made possible by recent advances in digital signal processing theory, hardware design, and programming techniques. It explores new representations of musical signals that can have profound effects on the way musicians conceive of and realize musical ideas. In particular, the book focuses on models that combine time-domain and frequency-domain representations (grains, wavelets, and physical models), visual programming and advanced user interfaces, and that incorporate musical knowledge using artificial intelligence techniques and adaptive neural networks. The 14 contributions take up issues of how musical signals should be displayed to musicians, engineers, and scientists who want to work with them, how professionals can work with the representations to accomplish musical tasks, how systems can be designed to permit working with multiple views of the same signal, and how representations of musical signals should be organized to promote efficient communication between devices using these signals. recognize Chris O'Riley as the show's fun loving host. Thanks in no small part to O'Riley's easygoing way with kids and his fine accompaniments, the show not only presents good music, but manages to be playful and funny as well. This collection of 29 piano pieces are taken from those O'Riley plays during the mid-program break on the show, and demonstrate the depth and range of his talent. Included with the CD information are short notes by O'Riley in which he describes his connection to each piece and what he is trying to accomplish when he plays it. Particular favorites of mine include Guastavino's Cantilena, No. 4, Rachmanioff's Lilacs, Op. 21, No. 5 and Rameau's Tambourin. However, fans of Chopin, Debussy, Prokfiev and Mozart will also find something to satisfy. This is a CD that I will be returning to again and again
From the Top, and from the heart........2002-01-26 Gorgeous music beautifully played. This is a wonderfully eclectic set of pieces, some familiar, many rare, all of them played with warmth and personality. I love Christopher's eclectic tastes. The Guastavino pieces were new to me, and they're gems. The Rameau is exquisitely played. The Rachmaninoff is familiar, but it's awfully nice to hear it played with a fresh personal feeling. Pieces like the Milhaud, or Poulenc's "Babar and Celeste", or O'Riley's own transcription of the Delibes, or Maxwell-Davies' "Stromness" -- all of them are wonderfully evocative. The program notes are every bit as thoughtful and engaging as you'd expect given such a marvellous selection and such stylish playing.
There are some real treasures here. And you might also enjoy "From the Top," the public radio show O'Riley hosts. Best thing to happen to music since Bernstein's Young Person's concerts.

Michael Hawley.......2002-01-26 This truly is a collection of gems, both in the selection and in the playing. Christopher O'Riley has wonderful eclectic taste, a beautifully lyric style, and a knack for finding out of the way and not-yet-known treasures (and putting new luster on the regular old treasures!). The pianism is exquisite: beautiful touches in the Rameau, and especially in the delicate Rachmaninoff pieces. Several of the pieces, like the Guastavino (which are fabulous) and Davies' "Farewell to Stromness" (wonderfully evocative of those tough, remote Scottish isles), and his own arrangement of that beautiful Delibes -- these were very happy discoveries for me.
All of these little pieces (though some are not so little!) are full of love and life. The thoughtful program notes were appreciated and enjoyed as well. The sound is great.
It's a wonderful CD. Buy it. And listen to the radio show, too: FROM THE TOP. Best thing to happen to music since Bernstein's Young People's concerts.

Intoxicating experience, a rich blend of music and folklore and history that captures rhythms of life in exotic lands. What makes The Roots of the Blues so compelling is Charters's ability to evoke the landscape and peoples of West Africa in vivid detail.

this is so effortless, it does not ask much of the listener to join in with the musician's effort.
Then I realize this is all BS. Just listen to one of the best instumentalists playing very nice tunes. It is not his fault if it is so smooth, and clean. Just great.
The Disc Title Says it All.......2004-10-14 "Creation" is probably the best word one could choose for this fine effort. This is an interesting recording, one that mostly excels, but also has some shortcomings.
Branford's playing is a lot of things here, studied, practiced, prepared, thorough, and strong. It could have been more sensitive and collaborative. This is not something that necessarily need be laid at his door; it could be a "group" thing as much as anything. Other reviewers have noted that ensemble players often have difficulty working within an orchestra setting, and that the presence of a conductor could have kept things in check.
But that was not the point of this effort. If Orpheus and Branford had wanted a conductor they would have hired one. So one must use a more nuanced and blended yardstick to measure this . The compositions themselves clearly have a strong jazz influence, so the conceptual approach of the players is not only entirely appropriate but interesting. And that's what in the end separates jazz music from classical music. You may not like what people play or the way they play it, but at least it's not the same old stale sh-t. Branford's history of exploring a variety of musical stylings comes in well here; I appreciate his playfulness and almost joyful approach to some of these pieces. That's the way I think they ought to be played.
Highly Recommended.
Fairly lackluster, but interesting to hear.......2001-12-08 Branford Marsalis is an excellent jazz saxophonist.
However, he runs into the same problems many jazz musicians have when trying to "cross over" into classical: too little emphasis on tone quality, rough articulation, trouble blending with the strings, and in some cases, sloppy ensemble technique.
Perhaps this latter problem has more to do with the lack of a conductor than a lack of skill.
Marsalis plays quite respectably on the Ibert. He doesn't take the ossia altissimo passages, but many "classical" artists don't either, so I can't fault him for that.
The "Scaramouche" comes off the best of all the traditional recital pieces on this disc. Marsalis caputures the fleeting playfulness of the first movement, and his technique is flawless here.
His tone is unacceptably bright and raucous in the "Creation du Monde," however. His playing in that piece is beyond the range of any interpretation I've ever heard. Much of this has to do with the placement of the microphones and the production of the recording as well.
I would have preferred that the disc include fewer transcriptions, but Marsalis seems to enjoy recording transcriptions instead of the more serious works for classical saxophone. It would be interesting to hear him play some of the heavier repertoire: the Glazonov concerto, the Dubois Concerto, the Dahl concerto, etc.
Shivers down my spine.......2001-08-03 If you're a Branford Marsalis fan, you'll be on the edge of your seat 4 seconds into the opening cut. Imagine his exquisitely clear alto sax intoning the melody of Satie's Gymnopedie. And with Orpheus's incredible group energy (it's an orchestra whose members conduct themselves) and you'll understand.
I thought it would be wonderful background as I sat working at my computer -- it's so incredible it's distracting. Savor this.

Customer Reviews:
sheerly beautiful.......2001-01-26 I have listened to some other more famous works by Milhaud, but this chamber music album is one of my favorite. None of the pieces in this collection is large, but they are all very expressive and abundant in emotion. Milhaud sounds avant-garde even in our time, but there is some kind of charming harmony in his music. I think his music is much easier to appreciate than those atonal works. It will take you a while to appreciate his creativity if your ears are used to music of baroque era and classical era, but it is going to be rewarding.
As for recording, compared to other old recordings of Milhaud's works, some actually conducted by the composer himself, this new recording is very clear and enjoyable. If you like Milhaud's music, you should not miss this album.

Editorial Reviews
Book Description
The Routledge Guide to Music Technology is an A to Z trade reference aimed at music students, technophiles, and audio-video-computer users. It offers brief definitions of key concepts, biographies of key figures, and discussion of the historical development of the audio world over the 20th century.
The world of music technology has exploded over the last decades, thanks to introductions of new formats (MP3, RealAudio), hardware (Apple's iPod, DVD, CD-ROM), and software (computer file sharing). Now, musicians can create their own audio files and share them with listeners all over the world. Music students (and the average music consumer) need a quick guide to this technological universe.

Saudades do Brazil, based on the music Milhaud heard when he lived in Brazil for two years, is one of his most entertaining pieces, whether you hear it in its piano or orchestral versions. Alexandre Tharaud has the rhythms down right and takes us on a very lively musical journey. Both the other pieces, for narrator and piano, are on a distinctly lower level of inspiration, which is never surprising with Milhaud since he wrote so much music. The presence of the composer's widow (reading her parts in English) adds obvious authenticity to this project, but I don't think anything except Saudades will prove compelling for most listeners. --Leslie Gerber

Carter Brey, who recently tied himself down to the position of principal cellist of the New York Philharmonic, has put together a most entertaining collection of Latin American music (including some excerpts from Milhaud's Saudades do Brasil). The most substantial pieces are Ginastera's Pampeana No. 2 and Cello Sonata, both wonderful. But they don't overshadow some excellent arrangements of Piazzolla tangos, which are fine music too. With prize-winning pianist Christopher O'Riley, Brey turns in scintillating performances of all this music, giving us a collection that is as stimulating as it is entertaining. The recording is fine, the price reasonable. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
A classic version of Piazzolla's Le Grand Tango.......2000-06-21 Piazzolla's Le Grand Tango, which gives its name to the album, was one of his masterpieces. It has now been recorded more than half a dozen times.

Customer Reviews:
Perfect!.......2004-12-16 More importantly than just being a recording of great (and often neglected) music, this is a GREAT recording of great music. This is The Performance to get of these works. Don't waste your money on other conductors who don't get it.
All this is based on my LP -- which, alas, doesn't have Scaramouche on it. I trust the Milhaud gives it the proper bounciness, but I haven't heard it for sure!
Good overall view of Milhaud.......2001-09-06 This compilation contains Milhaud's best known works and with the composer conducting with great verve and elan, nuance and quality of interpretation are all there. My favorite, the joyous Suite Provencale is superbly played. There is also the jazz oriented La Creation du Monde, the nostalgic Saudades do Brasil with its swaying rhythms and the comedic Le Boeuf sur le Toit with its "Crazy Horse Saloon" humor. A good introduction to a most interesting French composer and heartily recommended.
