Superb Music.......2005-03-20
This Classics For Pleasure CD is a new release of older material from two previous albums. Unlike previous releases this contains nearly 80 minutes of music so it is excellent value.
Delius is often described as a British composer, which is slightly inaccurate. He had German parents, he lived in the United States, travelled to France and Germany as well as other parts of Europe before settling in France. He was in many ways an International Composer. His music may seem curiously eclectic. Think of Debussy with a bit of a Grieg melody and Wagnerian drama thrown in. Yet his music seems all the more distinctive because of it.
Vernon Handley's interpretation of these pieces have often been regarded as a bit too emotional, much like other British Conductors like Barbarolli and Beecham who recordings are yardsticks which others are measured. Yet Brigg Fair has an incredible lyricism and the rare Eventyr combines the Debussian impressionism with drama. The use of percussion and the shouting voices, presumably from the orchestra itself, in the hands of Handley come across so vividly. This piece alone with Handley's direction brought Delius to my attention. I now enjoy Delius' music more than I do say Elgar, Holst and Vaughan Williams.
This is a great introduction to Delius' music and can be recommended with enthusiasm.

Customer Reviews:
Two and a half hours of divine music...what more can I say?.......2006-02-27
Well, a lot! And since no one else has taken the trouble to review my favorite Adagios collection, I'm just gonna hafta go an' do it myself, won't I?
Starting with the stunningly gorgeous 'Jesu, joy of man's desiring' by Bach, this tape reels you in instantly. I'm not much of a fan of 'slow' and 'peaceful' music; I like the beautiful, sublime type that just makes you tingle all over whenever you hear it. (If only Canon in D was in this tape my cup of joy would overflow) Anyway, don't stop listening because Delibes' 'Flower Duet' comes soon after and it is the very meaning of divine. I listen to the taoe just to hear that one song over and over--but not too much, or it'll loose it's touch. This is a Opera duet (sorry, don't know technical terms, my passion is music, not the science of) sung by two women, for those of you out there like me who know practically nothing!! Gorgeous! Sugoi!! (That's Japanese)
Ahem.
The lovely 'Ombra mai fu' (which, I believe Elizabeth Bennet's sister horribly sings in the BBC Pride and Prejudice miniseries) is another memorable piece (hear the previews of these titles, please) and finally, William Vaughan's 'The Lark Ascending' a sixteen minute piece of violin heaven played so expertly you will see larks flying in circles about your head--or is that because your noggen got whacked?
Well, as for the second CD, it wasn't quite as memorable, but it's up against perfection, ok? Brahms' 'lullaby' (yes, THAT lullaby) is really sweet and of course there's 'Claire de Lune', a favorite of the Adagios collection, besides 'Sheep may safely graze' and 'Air on a G string'. (Honestly, does EVERY Adagios collection have that one? It's not even that wonderful.)
But what am I going on and on for?
BUY IT!!!!
NOW!!!!
STOP THINKING ALREADY AND BUY IT!!!

Customer Reviews:
The Artistry of Nelson Eddy.......2006-11-04
Nelson Eddy's flawless singing and diction, with a modern orchestral accompaniment, make The Artistry of Nelson Eddy a romantic, sophisticated musical experience.
Artistry of Nelson Eddy.......2006-08-22
Contemporary music which is sung well but voice not as expected of Nelson Eddy. The true baritone of his voice missing. This may be the recording but CD received in good condition.
A Nelson Eddy Tour de Force: Magnificence here on earth.......2006-03-17
I have most of the movies of Nelson Eddy. Together with Jeanette MacDonald, this team produced some of the most romantic movie-operattas ever made. But the sound quality of those movies pale in comparison to the magnificence of this production.
Nelson Eddy has never sounded better, aided (1994) by more modern recording techniques, the quality here (even with a disclaimer) is beyond belief. He has got to be one of the premier baritones of all time. Singing Popular tunes adapted from classical themes, he may be without peer. I have a CD of the young Sinatra singing "Full Moon and Empty Arms" to Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. He is not in the same universe with Eddy, whose crisp diction, timbre, fullness, perfect pitch, and passion ~ YES! PASSION! ~ must be heard (hopefully on on quality audio) to be fully appreciated. This is AWESOME. Maybe the best it gets here on earth. This is a wholly magnificent CD if you appreciate really good music, a fantastic baritone, and have a romantic bone in your body. I am astounded. Until today, I had no idea that Nelson Eddy was this good. This CD proves he was.
For those who are already fans of N.E. only........2003-12-22
Nelson Eddy made these recordings when he was about 60 years old and it shows. He retained an excellent voice for a very long time, allowing him to perform successfully until the day he died. However, this particular recording seems to emphasize vocal decline, in terms of control and range. The problem may be that the songs presented here are mostly VERY GREAT classical orchestral pieces, to which are sung pop lyrics. In my opinion, most (but not all) of the lyrics to these songs are not worthy of their music and are incongruous. The last number, "Alone Together", an excellent Schwartz/Dietz song (which seems out of place with Rachmaninov and Ravel,) is actually a duet with Nelson's partner, Gale Sherwood. It was recorded a couple of years later than the other songs on this album, and is given a bossa nova background that in this mix, practically drowns out the singers! As to the overall sound quality, there are some light snaps and pops as on a record, but the music is loud and clear. I do not mean to discourage Nelson Eddy fans from buying this album. I think you need this album. I own this album. Buy this album, and encourage the release of more albums and radio recordings by Nelson Eddy. What I do mean to say, is that "The Artistry of Nelson Eddy" is not the best introduction to the artistry of Nelson Eddy. His recordings from the 30's, 40's or even 50's are a better purchase for the beginner. Once you love Nelson Eddy, then pick up this album.
A Surefire Way To Turn A Bad Day Into A Good One!.......2003-04-12
The music on this CD is so beautiful it brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to it. It proves that the music of Nelson Eddy is simply timeless. I have always loved his voice, but these arrangements bring out the very best of it. It is highly recommended.

This lovely, unjustly neglected work should have become part of the mainstream repertoire long ago. Based on a Persian legend retold by poet Thomas Moore, the story is an endearing mixture of Western and Eastern religion. Setting a Christian vision of Heaven in Allah's garden, it tells of a supplicant tainted not by guilt but by inheritance, who must be cleansed by compassion and undaunted personal effort to be admitted to Paradise. The music is basically lyrical, tender, and serene but encompasses the depths and heights of intensity, lamentation, devotion, ecstasy, and triumph. A succession of vintage Schumann songs, sometimes bursting into operatic arias, is held together by often highly dramatic accompanied tenor recitatives and by long passages melding the solo voices with chorus and orchestra; the instruments evoke images of sun, moon, flowers, water, even the clash of war, refuting Schumann's supposed inability to orchestrate. The singing by both chorus and soloists is beyond praise; the orchestra is wonderfully transparent but often too subdued, evidently by interpretive choice. Of the two short pieces, the second is more beguiling for its mysterious, shimmering atmosphere. --Edith Eisler
Customer Reviews:
An Essential Schumann Recording.......2006-07-22
I recall a biography of Schumann that I once read in which the author opined that Schumann was a miniaturist foolishly driven to try his hand at bigger works. The author went on to say the composer's tiny piano piece "Elf" (from Bunte Blatter, I believe) is worth more than all his massive choral works together, collecting dust as they are on library shelves. I submit there are two things wrong with this assessment. First, when it was issued, no one had taken Schumann's big choral works down form the shelf and dusted them off for a long time, so it was pretty impossible for music lovers to make a judgment about their contents. Second, the person who took them down off the shelf, when it occurred, was not John Eliot Gardiner. Pretty strong praise, maybe, but though "Das Paradies und die Peri" has been recorded before, more or less successfully (there used to be a semi-decent version by Armin Jordan on Erato), the beauty and sheer genius of Schumann's work was only hinted at in earlier recordings. And it is a thing of beauty, with music that would beguile even Schumann's detractors. Much is made of Schumann's naivete about orchestral color when he wrote his First Symphony in 1841. Well, by the time of "Peri" in 1843, Schumann knew how to write for the orchestra. His writing for winds, harp, high percussion--instrumentation he rarely used for coloristic effect in his works--is beautifully rich.
Part of the success, of course, is original instruments, whose freshening effect in Schumann's music can be likened to the efforts of a restorer working on the oil painting of an old master. However, it must be said that Schumann was in the thrall of Mendelssohn at this point in his career, so a piece like "The Chorus of the Nile Spirits" (No. 11) has all the lightness of a Mendelssohn scherzo; this is an influence Schumann progressively shed in his later choral music. Still, it is not merely original instruments nor Mendelssohnian influence but Gardiner's sure ear for balance that makes this music come up so fresh and radiant.
Add the fact that Gardiner has at his disposal the radiant voice of Barbara Bonney for his Peri, and it would be difficult to imagine finer talents employed on Schumann's behalf. The other soloists are fine as well--Christoph Pregardien being an especially sweet-voiced match for Bonney in the tenor-solo role.
As critics have pointed out, in "Peri" Schumann benefited from his work with the German lied; the vocal writing is always fluent, and Schumann is always sensitive to the text he is setting. High points for me are the gentle finale to Part 2 (No. 17); No. 20, where the rejected Peri vows to keep on keeping on; No. 23, where the Peri wins her wings, so to speak, by capturing the tears of the repentant sinner; and the final magnificent solo and chorus (No. 26), to which I could listen again and again. No. 23 is like one of Schumann's famous ballads, Nos. 17 and 26 like the best of his great love songs. Sure, the libretto is more than a bit corny for modern tastes. Just skim it, and listen to the music.
Actually, Schumann did miscalculate a bit in this work, and that may be why it isn't heard as often as it should be. The first part is clearly the most dramatic, with a thrilling battle scene using "Turkish" percussion and a powerful final chorus with thundering timpani; Schumann would use that trick again at the end of his wonderful Second Symphony. At this point, Schumann wasn't a seasoned enough oratorio composer to pick, or craft, a libretto that would share the dramatic wealth across all parts. But Parts 2 and 3--especially Part 3--have so many individual beauties that we're the losers if we don't overlook Schumann's miscalculation.
As to the other works on the disc, "Requiem fur Mignon," a very unusual setting of a scene from Goethe, is probably Schumann's best-known choral work, though you are unlikely to hear it in as imaginative and subtle a treatment as Gardiner gives it. Until hearing Gardiner, I thought Abbado's recording, also on DG, was as much as I needed to know about this work, but again, original instruments make all the difference. Despite the enthusiasm of Schumann expert John Devario, who wrote the excellent notes, for "Natchlied," I find it is not on the same exalted plain as either Peri or the Requiem, but it is short and relatively sweet and certainly nice to have as an addendum to the other pieces.
All in all, this is one of the most important Schumann recordings in years. And years.
Serene ,uplifting & captivating Schumann.......2000-10-31
I have just re listened to this marvelously moving collection of Schumann's choral works again after my initial purchase. I am even more moved and in awe at both Gardiner's way with the Romantic era, and Schumann's powerfully wrought music. Lilting, intense, lyrical but always serene and flowing.
If Gardiner's driven and superbly played HIP Schumann Symphonies were not enough to entice, then do try these beautifully proportioned and recorded works. The clarity is amazing. The Nachtlied is spell binding. Barbara Bonney is enthralling in the Peri role. The choral ending and final brass blaze to part one of Paradise and the Peri is spine tingling, no other way to describe my reaction.
I'm a real Schumann convert. Now wouldn't John Eliot like to try Schumann's opera Genoveva? I hope so. This is simply a spectacularly affecting set. Don't hesitate.
Schumann must be smiling.......2000-10-08
In an interview, Gardiner said that he thought that no one understood Schumann. And you know what -- he's right. It's too easy to criticize Gardiner for his hubris, but when the results are this good, who cares? Schumann is NOT the incoherent, rambling, second rate Romantic composer that too many people view him as (Schumann, BTW, absolutely *hated* the term "Romantic"). Such a misguided point of view makes musicians think that it's perfectly fine to tamper with Schumann's scores, modifying dynamics, setting out sluggish tempi that are modified with self-indulgent rubato, and blaming him for poor orchestration without making an effort to bring out the often cleverly beautiful counterpoint and part-writing in proper balance. With great soloists (lead by the incomparable Barbara Bonney as the Peri), a disciplined choir, and a "period" orchestra, Gardiner's recording of Schumann's "Paradis and the Peri" is a triumph in every way. Gardiner finally reveals Schumann as the one of the most important (if not *the* most important) and vital composers of the first generation of European Romanticism (the others include Mendelssohn, Liszt, Berlioz, and Chopin). The use of period instruments and a properly balanced choir (NOT of the overblown Victorian type, thank god!) ensure clarity, so that the various lines come out with great eloquence. And Gardiner's direction is forthright and vigorous, yet eloquent and expressive, not entirely lacking in rubato (which is a hallmark of 19th century performance practice, after all) yet careful to keep the score moving, thus emphasizing the overall strucuture of this glorious and deeply moving work. Gardiner presents Schumann as Master Raro -- Florestan and Eusebius in perfect balance. Also, don't miss Gardiner's recording of Schumann's symphonies! And I do hope Gardiner will go on to record Schumann's Faust Scenes -- one of the composer's greatest yet most neglected works.
Revolution!.......2000-01-16
This is actually beyond words! What Gardiner is doing with the romantic repertoire should have been done a long time ago! The clarity of the orchestra, the superb soloists and the wonderful choir blended together to create something absolutuely overwhelming! This cd makes you wonder...what have we really been doing all these years...is the 20th century ideals really good when it comes to the music and the way we hear it? Anyway, this is a superb disc with music ignored by the people who had no understanding for Schumann's way of writing when it actually were themselves who didn't understand a thing!
Gardiner proves himself again in another great recording.......1999-10-01
This superb album of three Schumann choral works proves (yet again) that John Eliot Gardiner belongs in the class of major conductors and not just of "period instruments" specialists. And the works themselves richly deserve to be heard, particularly the spectacular "Paradise and the Peri," which is Schumann at his best; despite the somewhat quaint period flavor of the text, the evocative nature of the music makes this an oratorio that deserves more than to be trotted out as a curiosity. Gardiner and his singers and instrumentalists play it for all it's worth, as they do the magnificent "Requiem for Mignon" and the explosive "Nachtlied." An album not to be missed!

Magnificent performances of a singular composer........2004-05-04
Frederick Delius (1862-1934) is often called an "English impressionist," a term which implies that he can be lumped together with Debussy or Ravel. But just as Debussy isn't Ravel and Ravel isn't Debussy, Delius is an artist unlike any other.
He has never been a world-renowned figure, and his music doesn't have the power or universality of Beethoven or Mozart, but for those who love Delius, he is one of the sublime creators in the history of music. I, for one, love his music, and these exemplary performances of some of his best-known works present this singular creative mind at his very best.
Delius has some superficial similarities to Debussy and Ravel, but his highly personal harmonic thinking and his penchant for subtle but pronounced melodies make his music among the most accessible and rewarding of any in the classical repertory. The titles of his pieces, from "In a Summer Garden" to "On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring," demonstrate his preoccupation with beauty and the evocation of nature. His work is subdued, quietly passionate, and immediate in its rewards. In Delius, refinement rather than hysteria is the defining element.
This recording has been justifiably praised as one of the finest Delius discs available, and other than the great recordings of Thomas Beecham (Delius' first and best champion and interpreter), you can't do better than Andrew Davis and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Look into Delius, and I think you'll see why his music sparks such fanatical devotion in his admirers.

Customer Reviews:
Good, but not great selections given the title selected........2007-03-04
This CD contains some good pieces, but overall, the selections were not what I would have picked for a CD with this title. I used to think that I hated classical music, but now that I've sailed past 40 I have learned to enjoy it in almost every variety. Nevertheless, as a child of the Rock/Pop Music era, I can tell you most people today who think they hate classical music, think so because they've pretty much only heard the slower/less dramatic compositions. (I.e., "elevator" music.) The goal, of course, is to develop a real love for the genere, but in most cases, the introduction needs to be a "grabber." Perhaps I'm too skeptical, but while there is more than elevator music on this CD, I do not think it is on the whole upbeat or rythmatically appealing enough to sieze the interest of most of today's A.D.D. generation --- which is the presumable target audience.
Worthy on any level.......2002-01-23
I bought this cd for my father about 3 years ago. My father loved classical music. Actually, one might consider him quite the snob about classical music. Pop (was 83 at the time) and I (48 at the time) spent many an occasion listening to this wonderful cd. It has enough variety and familiar pieces (and yet, not the regular stuff) that we could let it play again and again and still be delighted with the pleasure that it brought to us both. I am listening to it even as I write this review. Buy, buy, buy! It is a PERFECT gift.
Humans Are Classically Stubborn.......2001-05-16
We humans are quite a stubborn bunch. Once we get something in our heads, it's hard to change our minds. I have been a life "shunner" of classical music. A pseudo snob, I couldn't waste time on music I couldn't.....A. Dance (poorly) to, or...B. Sing (horribly) along with. Yet in galleries, museums, or theatres, I would hear strains of truly beautiful music and would think "I just have to find out what that is!" Then, of course, I didn't. I finally forced myself to purchase this CD at the urging of my 12 year old and I fell in love. YOU know all of these pieces. YOU'VE heard them every time you cried during a tear-jerker or strolled through a museum. And YOU like them, you really, really like them. The CD has become one of my favorites and actually induced me to buy more classical music. The name of my new purchase? "MORE Classical Music For People Who Hate Classical Music." Hey -It's a start. Give this one a listen, it will seem like an old friend has come to visit. And you just might learn something.
The title says it all........1999-08-28
This CD is good for those who do not regularly collect classical CD's. If you don't really know much about classical music, but would like just a taste, this CD is for. This album is also good for those who love classical music, I bought it because it had all of my favorite classical works all on one CD. I can play a song at a get together and everyone there has heard the song some where at some point in their lives.

Lloyd-Jones is a Worthy Successor to Beecham as a Delian.......2004-04-14
In 1997 David Lloyd-Jones conducted a different program of Delius orchestral (and vocal) music that included the early 'Florida Suite' and the final scene of his American opera 'Koanga.' It was with a different orchestra, the English Northern Philharmonia, and it was very good, very natural-sounding. I wondered at the time - perhaps 'hoped' is a better word - if this might be the beginning of a Delius series on the Naxos label. Well, here it is seven years later and another program of Delius orchestral music with Lloyd-Jones at the helm, this time of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Indeed, the ten works on this disc are recorded in chronological order, beginning with the 'Marche Caprice' (which I'd never heard) from 1889 and leading on to his very last piece, 'Fantastic Dance,' premièred only four months before his death in 1934. (I'd also never heard this piece. Shame on me!)
In between these two not-so-well-known pieces are some of his loveliest creations. There are the 'Three Small Tone Poems,' each named for a season: 'Summer Evening,' 'Winter Night,' 'Spring Morning.' There was originally a fourth piece called 'Autumn,' but it seems to be lost. These works, from the same time period as the early 'Marche Caprice,' confirm that Delius from early on was able to limn the characteristics of nature as well as any English composer ever has.
'American Rhapsody' is a shorter version of the later 'Appalachia' and does not contain a choral section. But it does contain worksongs from the African American workers whom Delius heard singing when he was in Florida running a family-owned orange plantation. It also includes extensive treatments of 'Dixie' and 'Yankee Doodle.' The piece was never performed as written until the 1980s.
'The Walk to the Paradise Garden,' from his opera, 'A Village Romeo and Juliet,' is, of course, one of Delius' most loved compositions. It is given a meltingly beautiful reading here. Following that are 'Two Pieces for Small Orchestra,' containing the vastly familiar 'On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring' and then the somewhat less-heard 'Summer Night on the River.' I was not aware until reading the excellent booklet notes by Hugh Priory that 'Cuckoo' quotes a Norwegian folksong that had also been used by Grieg. Again, Lloyd-Jones and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra do themselves proud. In fact, I don't know if I've ever heard a lovelier 'Cuckoo' either in concert or on recording. And that includes Beecham's famous recording. Simply splendid!
The CD is rounded out by 'A Song Before Sunrise,' written in 1918, the last of Delius' nature studies. 'Fantastic Dance,' dictated to Delius' amenuensis Eric Fenby after he became incapacitated, is rather more spirited than any of the foregoing and is a fitting close to this entirely glorious concert.
This is an impressive program well-played and -recorded, and all the more so when one considers the budget price.
Enthusiastically recommended.

Romantic Paradise.......2004-06-10
Andre Rieu's Romantic Paradise with selections including "The Godfather," "Strangers in Paradise,"The Rose," etc. is absolutely lovely. His violin brings out the best in these familiar songs. There is a second CD with the same title, with "Dances with Wolves" as the first selection, that will blow you away. I got mine in Europe. Hope it becomes available in the USA.

Customer Reviews:
"Richard Alden", best of the best!.......2006-10-15
I bougth this CD only for the track #8, from my Fair Lady "I've grown accustomed to her face", played, arranged and directed by Richard Alden, the same Ronnie Aldrich. The arrange has a little more rithm than the version of Phase 4 Stereo in "The magic moods of Ronnie Aldrich". It sounds spectacular!
The CDs from Readers Digest have some themes from Ronnie and "Richard Alden", inedits and a treasures for who loves the music of that genius od the piano
The rest of the CD has pretty songs.
