At the core of this group is Malian singer Tom Diakite. He sings in the Peul and Bambara languages of the Wassoulou region, his voice rising from quiet tenderness to vigorous urgency over the funky bass tones of his ngoni hunters harp and the cascading elegance of his kora. From London comes guitarist Sam Mills, tastefully supporting Diakite with his subtle playing. Filling out the trio's sound are the able hands of percussionist Djanuno Dabo from Guinea-Bissau. Together they play music that is both gentle and passionate. Notable session players that add to the rich, understated sound of this release include flutist Aly Wague, organist Cheick Tidiane Seck, and vocalist Djanka Diabate. Two versions of the standout track "Ta'aba" are included; it is heartfelt and sorrowful, dealing with the sadness and inevitability of departing. "Idjo" is a powerful tune that explores what separates and joins society: "My truth, your truth, and the Truth itself." Cirque always has the most magnificent musicians. Always outstanding! This cd takes some of the best from different programs and combines them into one experiance. It is a great compilation that has been done in the wonderfully unique Cirque way!

Like a bowl of magical soup.......2005-12-25

This is NOT the full course dinner, but an opening course, a little tease for your taste buds, or in this case, your imagination. This is like magical soup where each spoonful is a different flavor and sometimes, well it is a combination of the otherworldly and the worldly. Sometimes it is just the right spice for that right moment. This is great music and deserves respect for the creativity that fueled its construction. Like any good chef, it is personal, quirky and eclectic. Enjoy! If you want the full course, go to a live production and be ready to be a glutton.

Not exactly "Le Best".......2005-12-06

I was going to give this 4 and a half stars, but I can't. Literally. Anyway, there are some great tracks on this CD. Even Alegria, where the singer sounded like she lost her voice. Some of the songs are on my iPod right now. But I wish they put more. This isn't enough. Do you have how much music you can load on a CD? Come on, Cirque, add more!

Absolutely Breathtaking Music.......2005-10-05

I didn't buy this cd off of Amazon, at a Borders Store actually. But anyway this cd is absolutely amazing with a 14 selection of absolutely breathtaking performances and compositions from the world renowned Performance Show known as Cirque Du Soleil. With spellbounding varieties of music on this cd from the show. It's an absolutely worthy CD to buy. Hands down--you'll love it! Just buy it and hear it for yourself!

A Gem!.......2007-03-18

I've owned this disc from its original 1993 issue since shortly after it came out; now it is available on Hyperion's budget label, Helios. I had never heard of the Hungarian pianist Livia Rév, but she quickly became a favorite and I've since bought everything of hers I could find. I did not originally think I would be playing this collection of miniatures very often. Indeed, I think I got the CD primarily because I wanted to hear the unfamiliar Bartók and Jolivet pieces. I soon found that I reached for this disc often and here it is some fourteen years later and I still do. (In fact, the reason I came here to Amazon today to write this brief review is that I had once again listened to the disc last night and was charmed all over again.)

None of the music here is particularly virtuosic. But it is all beautiful. The tone of Rév's piano is particularly rich and marvelously recorded. And she is an exceedingly sensitive and musicianly player. There are subtleties of inflection, dynamics and rubato that make every piece, no matter how familiar, interesting and engaging.

But I must break off writing here because I want to go back and listen again to the last five pieces here, by composers I imagine most of us have never heard: the Pole, Milosz Magin, and the Slovenian, Janez Maticic.

hand in hand with sarala.......2000-05-16

this cd came out for me few months after i got the cd Sarala by Jones & Tidiane-Seck. right away the similarities were so obvious. this cd adds to the first one more flavor and keeps the dialogue open. compositions are mixture of ancient and modern ways to express the past and offer an underlining message of love, peace and unity. music is calming and energetic. only criticism i have is duration of the songs, they should've been kept more spontanious and in their aged length, but oh well, maybe next time.

It amazes me that Livia Rév is not better known. These are performances that are not showy, not virtuosic, but RIGHT. And the repertoire is, of course, dear to the hearts of most of us.

Rare, Deep Piano Musique..........2004-12-27

Vierne was a wonderful composer in the line of Franck, Lekeu, Widor, Magnard, Faure, D'Indy, etc. (i.e., the Franco-Belgian school of late-Romantic [Wagnerian] chamber music). Vierne's stunning Organ Symphonies for the Cavaille-Coll organs of France form a unique body of work. And besides these, he wrote a number of excellent chamber works, solo piano works, and lieder (melodies).

This collection of Vierne's piano pieces is a fantastic find, and I urge anyone to get it immediately before it is discontinued. This is rich, deep art, similar in ethos to Franck's and Faure's. Performances and sound are great.

Don Sheppard portrays the international show-business legend in live performances Chevalier s fans would have loved to see. Maurice shares his personal account of how his career evolved and sings many songs he popularized through the years. He even sings some of his French hits in English -- for the very first time! Act One takes place at the Henry Miller's theater in NYC in 1947, when he returns to the US after a twelve-year absence. He refers to his Hollywood career, tells us interesting facts about his life and loves, and pays a tribute to his movie partner, Jeanette MacDonald, with whom he made four hit movies. Act Two takes place at Lincoln Center in Philharmonic Hall in 1967 when he is touring 80 special cities worldwide, giving his farewell performances to his many adoring fans. He talks about his first and second Hollywood careers, tells funny stories, and regales his audience with his hits, including those from his best-known movie, the highly-acclaimed, Academy Award winning "Gigi." We also get the thrill of hearing his audience s enthusiastic reactions to the beloved icon, who became as much of a symbol of France to the world as the Eiffel Tower. Maurice Chevalier was arguably the greatest international entertainer of the 20th century. His story is a spicy "rags to riches" epic which starts in a very poor section of Paris called Menilmontant, but evolves into a long, history-making career of almost 70 years in which he is celebrated and revered the world over. Don Sheppard as Maurice Chevalier, with Musical Director Khris Dodge conducting the Chevalier on Broadway "pit orchestra." All arrangements and orchestrations are by Khris Dodge.
