About the Artist
SonSublime's new album, "Irresistible", is an album as groundbreaking as it is traditional. For SonSublime has used the rhythmic foundation of the original Cuban son and combined it with intricate arrangements and orchestration to create an original New York City charanga sound, the ultimate in dance music. For lovers of Cuban music, young and old alike, nothing could be more sublime. In effect, to dance with SonSublime is to evoke the past and to dream of tomorrow; it is tradition and evolution; it is a return to the roots and a flight to the unknown. With a rich repertoire of son, manbo, cha-cha-cha and danzon, SonSublime rescues, with surprising innovative twists, the most indigenous sounds of Cuban popular music.

Album Description

While other genre labels like Narada and Windham Hill diversified from their new age roots, Real Music has been consistent over the years in providing nothing but the best music for relaxation, meditation and spiritual enhancement. Their most notable recordings come from an Eastern Buddhist mindset, with multi-instrumentalist Karunesh leading the pack on the strength of previous discs Zen Breakfast and Nirvana Café. His basic approach to contemplative music involves a blend of exotic textures (bells, chimes, Tibetan bowls, sitar and Chinese instruments) with easy grooves and rich walls of ambience. The new collection's trance inducing instrumentation and sensuous rhythms begins with a few minutes of pure ambience and sitar, before slowly introducing a gentle percussive line ("For the Joy of It All"); Avinash's graceful Indian violin carries a mournful beauty that is also part of the similarly hypnotic, easy grooving "Monsoon's Dance." Bikram's Bansuri flute floats through beautifully in key locations, such as the introduction of "Mount Kailash." While the uninitiated might feel that there's a certain repetitive nature to the tracks (which usually begin with sparse instrumentation before the electricity is turned on), the intention is more to invoke a sense of inner peace than to be truly innovative. The title of the richly textured "Zensual" sums up the mystical intent of the thought provoking exercise.

5 out of 5 stars The pleasure in the feeling of non-existence.......2006-05-28

I heard the song "Monsoon Dance" on sky.fm. I previewed other songs and then bought almost all songs. Others are fine too, just listened once.

It's been 4 days since I bought them. I am not listening to any other song than Monsoon Dance for almost 4 days, day and night.. I am usually obsessed with these kind of mystic songs, listening to one song at a time for days a stretch, even when I sleep.

Thats the effect of the song Monsoon Dance. Truly, the mystic feeling of non-existence is an amazing pleasure. I feel one with the entire universe when I listen to this song.

I wonder what the composer might have gone through to come up with such an amazing piece of music. The Indian violin's effect is rather deep.

5 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL.......2006-03-10

This is one of the most beautiful CDs I have every heard. I bring it everywhere when I need to relax. The sound of the instruments from India are just breathtaking.

2 out of 5 stars This is great!.......2006-01-12

....if you like really strange, annoying German people who try to go "native." This is nothing but commodified exoticism; music for spiritual enhancement my arse....

5 out of 5 stars Masterful & mystical "new age music" from KARUNESH .......2005-09-23

I discovered the music of this German-born composer/multi-instrumentalist by accident. I was browsing in the new age music section at a certain mega-bookstore, looking for the latest CD from Kitaro (one of my favorite artists.) Well, I didn't find the Kitaro disc that day, but another CD soon caught my eye, one by an artist I'd never heard of - "Call of the Mystic" by Karunesh. Curious about the cover-art and song titles, I put the CD on the store's headphone listening station. I was soon immersed in the music, and intrigued by its exotic sounds. Of course, these were only brief sound clips from the album, so as each snatch of music soon cut off, I was left wanting to hear more. I then came home, found the CD on Amazon, and ordered it (sorry to the bookstore, but your prices were just too high! : ) Anyway, to make a long story short, in the several months since then, I have become a major fan of Karunesh (pronounced "Care-un-ish", which is, I learned, also the sanscrit word for "compassion".) I have now also collected several titles from his extensive back catalog, and while all of his albums have their own strengths, I believe that "Call of the Mystic" still rates as one of his finest overall releases. With it's mystical/mysterious feel, warm synth textures, and heavy use of exotic instruments, this CD literally makes me feel better when I listen to it. I know that the term "healing music" is probably overused in this genre, but in this case the term really fits. It's one of those rare albums that somehow pulls the listener into its World, and transports them to a better state-of-mind for it's duration. (Kitaro is perhaps the only other new age artist who's work has this effect on me.) Like most of Karunesh's works, this album is fully instrumental (So those of you who do not like vocals/lyrics with your new age music will be particularly pleased!), with all of the tracks running in the 5 to 7 minute range (a good length for this type of music.) Now, as people usually like points of comparsion for reviews such as this, I would say that Karunesh falls into the same general "new age/instrumental/electronic" genre as Kitaro, Vangelis, or Patrick O'Hearn (although his music's rarely as gloomy as O'Hearn's can be.) However, comparisons can tend to be a tad misleading, and at the end of the day Karunesh is a unique artist who's music has a personality of its own...Here is a quick rundown of all the tracks: the album opens with "The Joy of It All", an Eastern-flavored track which benefits from a hypnotic percussion groove and the sitar work of special guest Govi (a respected new age artist in his own right.) "Hearing You Now" features piano/flute lines that rotate back and forth, and an ear-catching mix of both electronic & acoustic drumming. "Monsoon's Dance" gives us one of Karunesh's most memorable melodies, played with a gorgeous blend of piano, Indian violin, and synth/percussion backing. "Mount Kailash" has a deeply-spiritual feel, and is highlighted by another guest spot from Govi (this time playing what sounds like an acoustic guitar run through a digital delay effect...quite a beguiling sound, actually!) "Sunrise at the Ganges" is basically a sitar/flute duet set over a backdrop of synth chords and Indian-style drumming. "Zensual" takes on a darker, electronic tone, with some mysterious "reed"-like synth soloing, layers of keyboard ambience, and a sensual rhythmic groove. "And the Grass Grows by Itself" adds some contrast to the pevious track, based mainly around acoustic sounds and a fun, hopeful melody. This track also features the hum of a Tibetan singing bowl (an unusal sound that I have come to like.) Lastly, "Ancient Voices", the only track with no noticable percussion line, is made up almost entirely of sitar and woodwind sounds, and serves to end the album on a peaceful, contemplative note. All in all, this is an album (and artist) that should not be missed if you are a fan of new age music. I will have to agree with what another reviewer said about Amazon's soundclips, though. The brief clips here are all of the opening moments of these songs, before the main themes really kick in - so the CD really does need to be heard in its full context to be truly appreciated. Also, speaking of other reviews, I think it is quite remarkable that of the six customer reviews that have been posted of this CD thus far, EVERY single one has given it a perfect 5 stars!...Amen!

5 out of 5 stars Call of the Mystic~Karunesh.......2005-07-10

Even though this is my first experience with Karunesh, this album was exactly what I expected,...and I enjoyed the different selection of instruments used to evoke a light, whimsical, and meditative feeling of calm. Recommended for light meditation, yoga practice, or massage therapy.

For a group that exudes so much intelligence and sophistication, Soul Coughing make incredibly intuitive music. The New York foursome gets pinned for its downtown neo-beat poetry shtick, but even M. Doughty, the group's acid-tongued lyricist, will tell you it's really all about the vibe, not the verse: the true leaders are the guys bringing up the rear. Sebastian Steinberg's loping upright bass and Yuval Gabay's precision drums, which form a live hip-hop/jazz-rock base, make Soul Coughing's second album, Irresistible Bliss, even sharper and more rhythmically confident than their 1994 debut, Ruby Vroom. Inverting George Clinton's maxim, Soul Coughing's operating principle seems to be "Free your ass and your mind will follow." As on Ruby Vroom, Doughty's vocals (increasingly dynamic) and Mark De Gli Antoni's keyboard sampler (increasingly focused) form the icing on Irresistible Bliss's groove-filled cake. But like the bass and drums, the voice and sampler work on a subconscious level. Neither conveys concrete meaning so much as it regurgitates data. Like a television set that plays down the hall while you drift off to sleep, Soul Coughing transmit repeated and recontextualized cliches as if they were information-age mantras, and collide those with door squeaks, elephant sounds, and Raymond Scott cartoon music to form a blanket of pop-cultural white noise. If Irresistible Bliss is less referentially hip-hop and (therefore) more song-oriented than the previous album, it's just as enthusiastically geometric--not to mention funky. Or, to transpose Clinton again: Who says a rock band can't play funk?--Roni Sarig

5 out of 5 stars Need to know another album.......2006-03-08

I love soul coughing and have for a very long time now, well since 1995 and I thoroughly suggest anyone who truly loves music to own this cd, it's amazing. But I do have a question, does anyone know of a soundtrack (I believe) that has the song soft serve on it and on the actual cd there is an orange/yellow flower that consumes the top of it. Anyway, any help would be surely appreciated! Thanks!

5 out of 5 stars Favorite Album Ever.......2006-02-20

I've never written a review for anything (I'm pretty sure). It's just like: "Whatever" to me, but I read some guy's review of Keep it Like a Secret by Built To Spill (by the way: couldn't recommend that album any more highly. Buy it now.). I lost my train of thought, but

Here's what I'm getting at:

This album changed my life. Not even kidding.

Besides, maybe, Giant Steps, this is the most important piece of music of all time. Of all the time in my life, of course. I don't know about yours.

Do me a favor and pick it up now.

Seriously, I couldn't even quantify or qualify the effect this album has on me with words or numbers or any other means of expression beyond this: This album changed my life.

Seriously, you don't even get it.

God man, I've been listening to this album since I was in second grade. My all time favorite.

Buy Ruby Vroom, too. Stay away from El Oso. And Mike Doughty's solo stuff. I mean, get it if you want. I don't care.

Just go read some Soul Coughing lyrics. Just take like, 2 minutes out of your day. You're not even doing anything important right now. Are you? No.

http://scug.net/, man. Thats all. Just go there. Read some of the words. Look at the pictures.

Seriously, you don't even get it. I took the liner notes out of the case (which I lost) and taped them to my wall. I'm not even kidding.

5 out of 5 stars Their best?.......2003-09-12

Maybe, maybe not. Soul Coughing wins the award for quitting while they were ahead. Although their decision to call it quits was unfortunate, they left behind three incredible albums, two of which are among the best albums of the 90s.

This album, their second, is possibly their best...though it's tough to say. The first album, Ruby Vroom, featured dark grooves and bombshells like Screewriter's Blues and Sugar Free Jazz. Irresistible Bliss features a broader range of styles and sounds; and, while not as groove-oriented, the songs seem to show the band coming into itself. Bassist Sebastian Steinberg and drummer Yuval Gabay are locked in here tightly enough to make most jazz band rhythm sections jealous. Mark DeGli Antoni's samples here are fabulous, often quite humorous (Disseminated, for example). While Ruby Vroom featured vocals consisting of repeated phrases, Irresistible Bliss features vocal work more in line with actual lyrics. For some people, this may not be a plus, as the approach of Ruby Vroom allowed for uniterrupted grooving. For me, the lyrics of Irresistible Bliss become just one more fabulous element to pay attention to.

I can't say enough about this album. It's great stuff. Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars If you are a fan of the band Cake, you'll love these guys........2003-04-28

As of late I've been listening online to WOXY (from Oxford, Ohio, the best radio station in the nation) . I heard a couple tunes from Soul Coughing; "Super Bon Bon" (with which I was familiar) and, I believe, "Soft Serve", from Irresistable Bliss. I decided that I had to own it. The only regret that I have is that I had to go for 7 years without owning it. Now I'm hooked.
These guys are technically adept and simple at the same time. Almost every song on the album is catchy. And none could be considered boring. My favorite is the stripped-down "How Many Cans?", which is a true showcase for M. Doughty's amazing voice. Now I'm going to have to pick up the rest of the S.C. catalog.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is so good.......2003-03-23

This CD is great listening, all the way up and down. Super Bon-Bon is the radio hit, but every track's bound to stick in your head after a listen or two. The lyrics are nuts, I don't know what he's getting at exactly but the music is just outrageously good. I'm not usually a huge fan of this genre, whatever genre that is, but this is a top-ten disc for me.

2007 two CD set from the diminutive Aussie entertainer who went on to wow the UK, Europe and the rest of the world with her infectious songs and overt sexiness. Kylie Minogue's arrival at hip dance label Deconstruction in 1994 is widely acknowledged as marking her emergence as a serious artist after six years as a fluffy pop puppet for PWL's Stock, Aitken & Waterman fuelled production-line. Chart hits rub shoulders with cool club mixes and key album tracks. Essential listening without a doubt. 36 tracks. Music Club.

5 out of 5 stars The Irresistible Princess.......2007-07-31

I was a bit skeptical of buying this new repackaging of songs Kylie Minogue did under the Deconstruction label in the mid-to-late-90s... but I'm a big fan of hers and am always happy to hear remixes, which this compilation includes several of.
"Confide in Me: The Irresistible Kylie" includes -- along with the songs from her original Confide in Me album (which I already own) -- songs from that time period of her career that many later fans (post-2000, Light Years) may never have heard, great dance tracks like "Falling [in Love]", "Nothing Can Stop Us" and "Where has the love gone".
This is a good album to pick-up if you are (like me)... eagerly awaiting her next studio album. This is a GREAT album to pick up if you (like me) like having a good dance beat while you workout or go running.

5 out of 5 stars Soothing, Great CD 5 Stars.......2005-10-03

I'm a huge Sarah Michelle Gellar fan and when I saw Simply Irresistible I had to have the soundtrack. I love all the songs on this cd, they are all great. I listen to them when I go to sleep at night. They are very soothing and relaxing. Just a nice cd to listen too. My favorite tracks are "Little King" "Falling" "Parkway" and "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" A great compilation of songs, a must have!

5 out of 5 stars A simply irresistible soundtrack..........2005-01-21

I have seen the movie a few years ago, and recently I decided to buy the movie. After seeing it a second time, I realized how amazing its soundtrack was. I had just loved the songs. Then my crusade to find the original soundtrack begun, and after search everywhere, I found out that this cd was not sold in my country. Although I was very dissapointed by it, since I wanted it so badly, I decided to buy it from the internet and import it. I didn't regret it. As soon as the cd arrived, I opened it and listened to the songs. I loved all of them, with exception of the 4th song, which I didn't like much. Even though there are two songs missing, which are: "Every little thing (he) does is magic - Shawn Colvin" and "Crush - Jennfier Paige", the cd is simply irresistible! The songs are incredible, however "That old black magic", one of the best songs is not complete. and I have no idea on the band or singer that plays it. I strongly recommend anyone to buy this soundtrack. I am sure you won't be dissapointed by it nor regret buying it. It was the first time that I have purchased a soundtrack, and I enjoy listening to it...Actually I love it!! I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I did, and I think this is one of the best soundtracks ever.

I just want to know the name of the theme played in the main menu of the DVD, does anybody know the name? who plays it?... please!!! I'm in love with it!... shame that Crush is not included on the soundtrack neither Once in a Blue Moon... Those are the real songs of the movie! Thanks...

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST CD I OWN.......2002-10-15

This really is the best CD I own, it has a complete mix of both old and new, as well as slow and fast songs. You don't even need to see the movie to appreciate the CD-but you should see the movie! I would recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys love songs.

That Jessica Simpson has been groomed to become the next (as well as younger, whiter, and more virginal) Mariah Carey should come as no great shock. Production by slavish imitation is the way it goes these days, and wanting to duplicate Carey's success is understandable. Yet the downside of idol worship (Simpson grew up with the octave-conquering diva as a touchstone) is the loss of unique identity, and sadly that's exactly what has occurred. From the wordless sighs to the mock Spanish guitars added for international appeal, to the overwrought power ballads and faux hip-hop flavored up-tempo cuts, Simpson, who can sing, is a prisoner of by-the-numbers production and songs by the usual pop/R&B-lite suspects. The end result is sonically stellar, but is too close to a generic endeavor that does little to establish Simpson as an artist. Still, Irresistible will no doubt firm up her already serious stats as a rising young star. --Amy Linden

"Irresistible", "A Little Bit", "Forever in your Eyes", "For your Love", "I never" and a great duet with Marc Anthony make this CD Irresistible.

4 out of 5 stars Jessica's Take My breath Away.......2006-08-19

Jessica Simpson is both a fine singer and actress, however, she does not compare with the originals like Berlin or Catherin Bach.Which she copied in Take My Breath Away and Dukes of Hazard.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-08-11

Sadly this album didn't sell much but it is indeed one of the best.I can't stop listening to it I personally think jessica simpson is better than britney spears.Brit is only this popular cuz of all the drama she makes and those dance moves.

1 out of 5 stars Watch as I resist it.......2006-06-30

Female artists used to make GOOD music, for proof get some Joni Mitchell, Pretenders (lead singer Chrissie Hynde is a woman), Aretha Franklin or Supremes. But these days, it's a joke, just an excuse for the woman in question to make her music "sexy". However, these pop stars fail miserably, because they exaggerate it so badly. Compare it to Chrissie Hynde. She was tough, independant, and respectable. Sex worked into her lyrics, sure, but it wasn't her entire persona, she didn't devote her music to selling her sexuality. Jessica Simpson, and most other female artists today, do. More proof that music has been dead since Kurt Cobain killed himself.

4 out of 5 stars He is irresistable.............2006-06-03

I know how it feels to find someone who is irresistable and remain innocent. I remember when this song came out when I was only 13. Jessica wasn't really that popular back then as she is now. It seems like Newlyweds truly made her more famous. It's too bad that Jessica wasn't able to release more singles from this album. The majority of this album is filled up with ballads just like with 98 Degree's. I really don't see why Jessica had to leave Nick. They made such a good couple. They were like Lucy and Ricky. I like Jessica because she's stil remains a good role model to others.

1. Irresistable- Yeah, I've been there. 5/5
2. A Little Bit- This is Jessica's second single. I remember seeing the video and when it was promoted by Bally Total Fitness. I really like this song. 5/5
3. Forever In Your
3.Forever in Your Eyes- Beautiful Song. 5/5
4. There You Were-I think Jessica should have released this as a single because it's such a beautiful song.5/5
5. What's It Gonna Be- Although the beats are a little bit different, it just sounds too much like Britney's 'Lucky'. 4/5
6. When You Told Me You Loved You-Another beautiful ballad. 5/5
7. Hot Like Fire- I love this song. I like the beats and I think Jessica should have released this as a single. 5/5
8.Imagination- Another hot one. Nice to dance too, 5/5
9. To Fall In Love Again-I like this song. Jessica is a great singer. She's just take your breath away.5/5
10. For Your Love-Once again, this song is beautiful. For some reason, it reminds me of the 90s with Mariah and Celine Dion. I recommend it as a wedding song. 5/5
11. I Never- Jessica gives a break from the ballads and gives you an upbeat song. 5/5
12. His Eye Is on The Sparrow- a perfect ending to this album. She included a gospel inspired song on this album. I like how she shows her faith in God. 5/5

Simply put, this brother is one of the best-kept secrets I'm glad I found out about. I also have the cassette and handle it with much TLC because it's been difficult to locate this particular CD. Miles is soulful and passionate in his delivery with EACH and EVERY song. If you like old Teddy Pendegrass brothers like that who "put moves" on you just with words, then you WON'T be disappointed---there's no fast-forwarding here...simply body-rocking, soul-moving, love-making, "lay-back-and-reminisce-about-the-old-flame" compositions here---get it and enjoy. You won't hear anything else like it. By the way, where are you, Miles?

I HAVE THIS IN CASSETTE FORM THIS IS A VERY GOOD ALBUM I REALLY ENJOY IT. I STILL PLAY IT TODAY. I REALLY ENJOY THE TRACK NEXTTIME. THE ONE CALLED SLOW DANCE IS MY FAVORITE. IT'S WORTH YOUR MONEY.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great compilation of Cathy Music!.......2005-02-21

Finally got this one after a lot of debating whether or not it would be worth it. Well, I'm not sorry I bought it! As a matter of fact, the compilation is a lot better than expected on account of the different version of "Touch me (all night long) and the slightly dancier sounding "Move to This".

When I first heard of Cathy Dennis back in the 1990, my immediate reaction was "Who is that?" I couldn't believe her voice...and couldn't wait to see the face that went with the voice. As soon as i heard "Touch me...", I was sold!

Hmmmmm...it seems they knew exactly what they were doing when they put on the UK single version of "Touch Me (all night long)" on this compilation. I think it's the perfect way to start a "Greatest Hits" cd. My sensitive ears caught this different version right away. LOL

The first time I played this CD compilation, "Irresistable", I fell in love with Cathy all over again. Too bad she's not recording anymore. :( I must add...the first time i heard "Touch me..." was in Montreal city on a late summer evening, blaring out of a dance club in the gay district.

And i admit I was hooked on her right away! Unfortunately, I ended up buying "Move to this" at a very high price in the high "double-digits". But it was worth it, because I supported an underrated and underappreciated pop star.

And it's a shame because she really deserved to be more famous, as mentioned in a recent review on here.
Yes...she did it all and she did it perfectly! I honestly admit that the songs on the 2nd half of "Irresistable" aren't as great as her earlier material, but she still had the voice, as cute as ever!

I love it when an artist writes her/his own music and can make it big in the music industry. Where are all the female artists like Cathy?

This disc is definitely the cream of the crop, because I listened to the "Am I the Kind of girl" cd and i didn't care for it as a whole. But they did add the best songs from there, onto here!

I hope she records again someday because she has collaborated with great artists since "Irresistable" came out. Look at Celine Dion...she wrote the song "Reveal" for Celine's "One Heart" album. And that song is the best one on the cd!

Since Cathy's Debut with "Move to this", I've never tired of the album. It was always something I'd put on the stereo, close my eyes and drift away to her voice. "Too many walls" has always been a favorite "Singalong" song. Very easy to follow and feel good to.

Same with "You lied to me", from "Into the skyline". Darn...what a great album that happened to be too! I find "Into the skyline" to be a more quiet album, except for "Everybody get up" which should've been on "Irresistable". Awww, too bad! LOL

5 out of 5 stars Perfect title.......2005-02-05

Ah, Cathy Dennis, we hardly knew ya...
And it's a shame because she really deserved to be more famous. She did it all: wrote 'em, sang 'em, produced 'em. And this disc is the cream of the crop.
Six songs are from her irresistible (sorry!) debut 'Move To This', five from the OK 'Into the Skyline', and seven from one of the great lost pop albums of the 90s 'Am I the Kinda Girl'.
Cathy's songs are dance and pop gems. They stay in your head long after you're done listening... which makes sense because this is the same woman who wrote Kylie Minogue's worldwide monster hit "Can't Get You Out of My Head" (she also wrote Britney's "Toxic").
Cathy's debut, 'Move to This', is dance happy, kicking off with the one-two punch of the brilliant "Just Another Dream" and "Touch Me". She also slows things down with the seductive "Tell Me" and the reflective "Too Many Walls". Overall a solid first album.
Her second, 'Into the Skyline' has always seemed to me to be cold. I think this may have had to do with her teaming up with Shep Pettibone to produce. There's a distance to these songs, but "Irresistible" really connects.
And then... ah, her third, and sadly, last album, 'Am I the Kinda Girl'. This was such an unexpected departure from her two previous dance albums: it was straight up POP. The title track has one of the great guitar riffs EVER, as Ms. Dennis plays her gender bending games. And it contains one of my favorite lines, "Am I the kinda screw that your toolbox lacks?" Mercy! Other standouts are the charging "That is Why You Love Me", and her gorgeous cover of the Kinks' "Waterloo Sunset" (Ray Davies even co-wrote a song with Cathy, "The Date", which is on this collection).
These days Cathy is more behind the scenes writing and producing... AND she's also been listed as one of the Top 5 richest women in England (probably from writing the themes to "Pop Idol" and its American conterpart called... well, you know...).
I hope she records again someday, but in the meantime, pick up this disc! You'll find it... irresistible.

5 out of 5 stars Cathy to Kylie.......2004-05-06

After all that she didn't really disappear, now she's writing for Kylie.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely Irresistable.......2001-07-21

Cathy Dennis entered the music scene more than a decade ago as vocalist for the dance outfit DMOB. After two dance-oriented projects, she seemingly disappeared from sight. This compilation is essential for any Dennis fan, containing music from those two albums, as well as her detour into retro-styled pop with AM I THE KIND OF GIRL?, which wasn't released here in the states. Among the highlights, her hits 'Just Another Dream', 'You Lied To Me', and 'Touch Me(All Night Long)', as well as her best ballad performance, 'Too Many Walls'. The other ballads are fairly disposable and not very memorable, and among the great songs on her aforementioned third album, check out 'When Dreams Turn To Dust', and the cleverly biting 'The Date'. A good reminder of why Dennis, at her best, was pretty addictive.

4 out of 5 stars A great collection of Cathy hits (and misses)!.......2001-03-21

'The Irresistible Cathy Dennis' is a perfect showcase for one of the 90's most underrated pop songwriters. Best of all, if you're a Dennis fan, many of the singles on 'Irresisitible' are rare 7" radio edits. Of course, singles from her early D-Mob days are missing, but that just means you'll have to collect them yourself :) For new fans: If you remember "Touch Me (All Night Long)", her biggest worldwide hit, you're bound to fall in love with nearly every track here. Lyrically simple, but highly melodic, this is essential pop.

5 out of 5 stars Eden Regained.......2004-07-10

After Salamander Crossing's breakup, Rani Arbo and her band Daisy Mayhem went their own way. "Gambling Eden" takes a different approach than 2001's "Cocktail Swing." Whereas the previous disc focused on 20's & 30's jazz, "Gambling Eden" is more in the folk-rock-country territory of a band like Nickel Creek. One of the first records I bought as a boy in the early 60's was "Stewball" by Lonnie Donnegan. At Arbo's hands the track pulses with energy with Arbo's violin giving it a traditional feel, particularly compared with Donnegan's earlier rockabilly take, "Way out in California where Stewball was born, all the jockeys in the country say he blew there in a storm." This set contains some fine originals such as the slow melodic "Finland," "Is it raining in Finland? I want to know; It's covered up with snow & I want to see you if you're ever coming home." "Turtle Dove" is a traditional tune traced to 1835, given a great energetic rendition that will be embraced by "O Brother" enthusiasts. John McGann & Chris Moore's "Closer" is such a lovely haunting slow song polished to a shine by the Mayhem band, "The answer always came back in a tangle like vines climbing up the side of a hollow tree, Now I think that looking up & wondering is just the place I really want to be." "O Death" that appeared on the "O Brother" soundtrack by Ralph Stanley is given a haunting arrangement and impassioned Arbo vocal. "Sparrow" is a country-swing original that brings to mind some of Toni Price's great recordings. The CD takes its title from "Eve" that traces the fall in the garden, "Paradise is only what you feel, everything else is so real, Who told us we had this power? I gambled Eden in an hour." "The Farmer Is the Man" is another familiar tune given another sterling rendition. My favorite track is the uproariously energetic "Road to Heaven," "I'm gonna find my own road to heaven, I'm gonna find me mine." The CD concludes with Dave Carter's "Farewell to Saint Dolores," a turgid lament. Arbo may have felt that she was "Gambling Eden" with the new direction she's taken on this disc, but the level of success here encountered might better be termed "Eden Regained." Enjoy!

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars cheezy.......2007-07-13

i give this cd one star for the drumming being adequate. the rest is very synthesized and just not enough for me. i think the drums might be the only "real" instrument on the album. the rest is cheesy synthesizer stuff. i was dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars A Musical Delight!.......2006-10-19

This CD is a wonderful, wonderful fusion of Middle Eastern & contemporary musical themes--with an accent on the Middle Eastern. It is smooth, pulsating, seductive, pleasurable, spiritual--and you can't help but move to it. Beneath the Veil is a paen of the feminine principle, without being feminist. It is New Age without being boring. I listen to it so often it has almost become a background musical screen in my house. Even the CD cover & included material are a class production act. Michael Breene's work is great & I look forward to hearing more from this artist. Obviously I highly recommend BENEATH THE VEIL.

5 out of 5 stars excellent like all Zingaia.......2005-07-15

Another excellent album and the most popular. Very exciting and thrilling.

5 out of 5 stars Music for the mind, Sound for the soul.......2004-10-04

A blend of Enigma and William Orbit with a dash of Pure Moods, it carries me along on a soothing ride of musical introspection. If you enjoy music of the world that creates a sense of mystery this sound will be pleasing to your ears. Beneath the Veil has a lovely joy to it that has a rhythm you will want to hear again and again.

It's not a new press - 1997 - but the music sounds new each time I hear it. It is seductive and wonderful for intimate moods. I have shared this music with several friends who each enjoy it as much as I do, and friends are the toughest critics.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely entrancing..........2004-05-15

'Beneath the Veil' is absolutely entrancing... The title track 'Beneath the Veil' is my fave track on it... Zingaia are also inspirational for me in my own cosmik trakks that i've been collaborating on/making over these past few years...

I actually bought it on a whim, and I play it pretty regularly for inspiration...

I still want to get 'Dancers of Twilight', which I'm sure is equally as enchanting - Savannah Skye aka Savvy...

4 out of 5 stars Nothing else quite like it. You gotta hear it........2006-09-06

Totally immersive sorta music--I play this while I'm working and sometimes I'll just find myself spacing out listening to it.

'nuff said, right!?

His other two albums are just as good.

He doesn't seem to have released anything since 1999...not sure why because it's got the same pull as Boards of Canada, Bonobo, and LemonJelly.

5 out of 5 stars The sound of the universe.......2001-09-20

I've had this CD ever since it first came out, and it is constantly an old standby on a er um trip, or any other time. This is most definately the most brilliant, beautiful CD I have ever heard. He does a wonderful job of mixing eno-ish ambient music with dub, all done in a very melancholy way that will bring a tear to your eye, and...revealing the innerworkings of nature all with one mighty echo that resounds off in to infinity, keeping the rhythm all the way out in to the cosmos. Phew, I hope that made sense. Kind of King Tubby meets Brian Eno, after hearing a lecture by Timothy Leary in a graveyard, while the eulogy is the song, "Everybody hurts" by REM. I can listen to this CD and dance, I can listen to it to chill and trip out. This is the kind of music that inspires me. He creates whole scenes and images and thought patterns with his work that are so visual, that they will reveal theories about the world you never knew. Or maybe that's just me. I am only saddened because since this CD not many have taken the cue, and there aren't more like it.

5 out of 5 stars Downbeat Ear Ambrosia.......2000-04-24

Two elements make this album a worthwhile investment: A unique sonic structure coupled with a propensity for continuous replay. The lush, mellow grooves that shimmer throughout this aural collage work well both as a lounge backdrop for the next great cocktail party or as a soundscape worthy of your most critical attention (several good listens reveal continuosly new, unheard patterns and sounds: from Mr Rodgers to subliminal space tablas!).

A desert island must-have, Mel's unique sense of sound emerges as a beauitiful canvas of painstakingly-crafted listening pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars laidback aural soundscapes with a beat.......1999-10-07

this is a very nice cd. it always soothes me when i listen to it. nepalese bliss is the flagship piece, but the entire cd is consistent in style. i bought this cd last december and listened 50+ times to it. nice aural soundscapes complement the rhythm, or vice versa. ingenious blend and placement of voice clips, filling the vocal 'requirement'.

as.

4 out of 5 stars nice lush ambient/downtempo.......1999-04-02

i'm listening to this cd now, probably for the 5th or 6th time. which means i like it better than the last 6 cds i bought. it's good.

i've been a little bored with techno lately (i know i know, it's not techno, it's downtempo/ambient, but i mean techno in the broader sense of the word). i mean, i've been listening to the stuff for like 10 years at least, it rarely surprises me any more. but this cd caught my attention the first time my friend bill stuck it in my cd player. not that it's mindblowingly different, it's more subtle than that. word on the street is this album was composed largely on an apple g3 laptop. which i could see, you can hear hyperprism (a cool mac-based fx program that sorta lets you "paint" the effects) all over it. which is probably one reason this cd sounds a little different. it's lush, yet a little lo-fi too. anyway i'd say it's pretty good, but not the most amazing thing ever. best cd i've bought this year, tho.

still, is anyone else beginning to feel like electronic dance music thing is getting a little played out? to tell the truth, i've been feeling that way for years. when is someone gonna take things to the next stage? blow my mind with tha new sound? oh, wait, i'm just reviewing this nice cd. never mind.
