Bembe

Editorial Reviews

J.D. Considine, Musician Magazine
"This exquisite recording finds one of the most gifted percussionists in Latin music today working in what is perhaps his true element -- the Santeria liturgy. The spiritual power of this Afro-Caribbean religious ceremony, sung in Yoruba to the accompaniment of a three-man percussion bata is awesome, but it's the intense articulation of rhythm that makes this music so devastating, incredible."

Option
"This record has the impact and immediacy of a session of the Fania All Stars performing inside the Vatican for the Pope. I assure you that the image is not far removed from the perimeters of this music's soul. A must recording for anyone wanting to deepen appreciation of the Afro-Latin musical heritage as a living force in American religious and pop music"

4 out of 5 stars BEMBE IS A YORUBA FEST.......2006-08-07

5 out of 5 stars MILTON CARDONA MAKES ME PROUD.......2005-09-12

MR.CARDONA STARTED OFF AS A BASS PLAYER IN NEW YORK CITY UNTIL HE SAW MONGO SANTAMARIA (REST IN PEACE) PLAYING IN THE STREETS OF NEW YORK, THE REST I DON'T HAVE TO TELL YOU. HE HAS A VERY SIMPLE, SINCERE WAY OF CHANTING THAT GETS INTO YOUR SKIN LIKE A LAXATIVE CLEANSING YOU OF ALL FILTH. IF YOU CLAIM TO LOVE THIS TYPE OF CULTURE WITHOUT HAVING BEMBE IN YOUR COLLECTION...YOUR FEET STINK AND YOU DON'T BELIEVE IN JESUS!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Masterpiece of Masterpieces.......2005-07-05

This is truly one of the all-time great recordings of the 20th century. It captures the "Bembe" ritual from start to finish of the Santeria religion, from which much of Cuba's music derived. The percussion is driven by a trio of drummers playing the Bata drums - Iya, Omele and Okonkolo, which together conjure polyrhythms whose origins are distinctly African ... specifically Yoruban from what is now Nigeria. Any serious student of Afro-Cuban music *must* purchase this recording. And note the value of used discs (today listed at $69.99); this is a rare and much-sought-after recording that was once only available on vinyl. Get it while it's re-issued. Because it's bound to drop back out of print. And you'll have to pay a hefty premium.

5 out of 5 stars In Praise to the Orisha.......2003-06-18

This is an incredible CD! The songs and rythms literally touch the soul. From a meditative standpoint the songs transport the listener on subconscious level--even if you don't understand the lyrics. Cardona is to sacred orisha music what Mahalia Jackson or Aretha Franklin was to Gospel--all soul, as true to form as you can get.

This is Orisha "gospel" with two of mankinds first musical implements-the voice and the drums.

4 out of 5 stars Authentic Cuban style field recording .......2004-11-18

Conjunto Folklorico Nacional de Cuba's MUSICA YORUBA represents Afro-Cuban folkloric music at its best.
The quality is sharp and clear, but the basic drum/vocal beats are pure field recording in authentic Cuban style.

5 out of 5 stars Exelent Top of CDs.......2001-09-10

The CD encompases most of "fundamento" cereminie, The singer Lasaro Ross is one of the top Santeria singers, has a very ethinic sound, while is easy to understand the proper pronuntiations of the words. This CD makes an exelent adition to any library, but especially for those who whant to learn the proper way to worship the orisha.

5 out of 5 stars MAFEREFUN ORISHA.......1999-07-01

5 out of 5 stars A 'must'.......2004-11-18

BATA KETU took the Yoruba-based religious music of Cuba and blended in the Afro-based religious music of Brazil to produce a re-meeting of the two cultures separated at birth.
BATA KETU is the achievement of years of experimentation with Orisha music and Afro-Cuban sound, and is a 'must' for any drum or Cuban collection.

5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2003-11-11

I just got done buying this C.D. for the third time (I've lost and damaged my others). This is, hands down, the best C.D. I've ever owned!

4 out of 5 stars Great Music. Odd Credits. Be Forewarned........2003-07-26

I should plainly state that the music on this CD is phenomenal! An interesting mix of "folkloric" and "popular" music that inspires movement and smiles and all around 'upful' vibes. Not all of the songs are listed, however. There's part of a song to Oxumare in there that doesn't get credited. My biggest complaint with the CD, however, isn't with the contents, but with who gets credit for it. Michael Spiro and Mark Lamson are credited as the 'composers' but these songs and styles existed long before Spiro and Lamson were even a gleam in their respective father's eyes. Listen to any other Yoruba music and you'll find the same fundamental rhythms and chants.

Jorge Alabe and Bobi Cespedes are the cultural beacons here and it seems they - if anyone - would be credited on the cd cover. The fact that Spiro and Lamson plaster their faces on the label side of the CD itself (when they were, ostensibly the financiers of the project and, most assuredly, background musicians) indicates a severe level of cultural arrogance and Eurocentric insensitivity. Yes, it's a great CD, I just can't understand why two white guys get the credit for this African creativity. It would have been a grand gesture had they willingly taken the back seat and allowed the cultural context to speak for itself. Instead, they chose to amplify their limited input to god-like status. Things that make you go hmmm....

I'd give it a '5' if I didn't have misgivings about Spiro and Lamson's motives here.

5 out of 5 stars Dance! Celebrate! Praise the Orisa!.......2003-06-29

When you walk in my home during bembe, ceremony or festival this CD is playing. When I am doing my house work or just relaxing this CD is playing. We that love Orisa ...will love this CD! Orisa children all over the world will love the inter-multi-percussion grooves and rhythms! Olodumare's children praising TOGETHER... In Brazil, ,In Cuba, In Africa, In the Caribbean and In the United States. How soon we forget 9-11 Brothers and Sisters. Its time to focus on what this CD has done in honor of the Human Family!Delight in Obatala / Osun / Sango creativity energy!Celebrate Orisa in spirit and in Truth. FOLKz this CD is the Bomb!

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!.......2003-06-23

This album is a great accomplishment - and shows full respect for the Yoruban traditions, revealing how the traditional African rhythms traveled globally and were woven into other cultures. Bobi Cespedes' rich voice, Lamson and Spiro's percussion, along with many wonderful Brazilian and Cuban musicians, combined to produce a danceable masterpiece.

Pre-Castro Cuba was not only about cigars, rum, and tourism. Even more than today, the countryside was a haven for practitioners of African-derived religions. These marvelous field recordings are a treasure trove of rare and thrilling material and still sound remarkably clear and immediate. They were the work of Lydia Cabrera, an anthropologist and writer of Cuban birth and Parisian nurture. She began gathering examples of music from slave descendants during the 1950s, often accompanied by photographer Josefina Tarafa. Using Tarafa's portable tape recorder and with help from engineers who later transferred her finds onto fourteen discs, this intrepid woman captured indelible examples of religious drumming, chants, and songs from the Yoruba, Angolese, and Dahomean traditions, back when the original languages and drumming styles were still relatively unadulterated. The accompanying booklet is chock-full of fascinating details and illustrated by examples of Tarafa's idiomatic black-and-white photographs. --Christina Roden

    Album Description

These recordings, made just a few years before Fidel Castro's rise to power, reflect Afro-Cuban musical and spiritual life in Havana and around the sugar cane mills of Matanzas. In 1957, Lydia Cabrera and Josefina Tarafa captured a fascinating snapshot of African slave-descendant communities performing their religious songs and ceremonies. Influences from present-day Nigeria, Angola, and Benin became some of the critical components of a vital religious movement in the Cuban countryside where linguistic, symbolic, and musical elements blended over time. As reflections of evolving practices, these recordings, are considered a soundtrack to Cabrera's writings on Afro-Cuban religions and are the perfect complement to volumes one and two.

I saw the band this past winter in a little jazz club and this is the closest disc to the in person experience that I`ve found yet, out of the eleven I`ve purchased since the show. All of their albums I`ve picked up have been great, but this is the one that captures all the energy and excitement that I had at that show, the people with me at the show agree. I`d say the first couple songs are the ones that stand out but thats until I start listening to the rest.

Lovely piano melodies anchor Bembe En Mi Casa, the collaborative compilation presided over by--breathe deep--composer, pianist, arranger and bandleader Ignacio "Nachito" Herrera. The Cuban music man has played with the Buena Vista Social Club, directed shows for son sister Albita and toured the world with the all-star Cubanismo! band. Bembe En Mi Casa finds Herrera tickling the ivories alongside daughter Mirdalys, trumpeter Adalberto Lara, saxophonist Nardy Castellini and Jesus Diaz. There are luscious, sweeping moments, to be sure, but much of the disc feels oddly muted and understated. After awhile, the instrumental runs seem to, well, run together, making it hard to figure out where one song ends and another begins. It creates a coherent atmosphere, but one that may lull you to sleep when it should be putting some swivel into your hips. Only the title track seems to snap the dance floor to life, and daughter Mirdalys commands attention with her confident, booming voice on album closer Ritmo Caliente. Maybe Herrera's next collaboration should be a wholly familial affair. --Joey Guerra

I heard a cut from this CD on college radio (WRUV-FM Burlington VT), called at once to find out what it was - and ordered a copy. It's just that great! Good energy, crisp sound, great rhythms, and lots of originality. Now whenever I put it on everyone who hears it stops and asks me what it is - pretty soon, all my friends will own it. My advice is to ignore the lukewarm editorial review and order a copy - I do not think you will be disappointed!

A startling bass trombone honks opening lines to Generoso Jiminez's EL TROMBON MAJADERO - then the Latin cha-cha-cha full orchestra kicks in and the classic Cuban big band style takes off.
Bilingual liner notes explain the history of Generoso and tells why this represents his lone recording as a bandleader.

    5 out of 5 stars A showcase for Cuba's legendary trombonist.......2000-01-11

What a great trombonist 'el Tojo' was! What a beautiful sound and phrasing and what a great arranger too! A pity this record has taken so long to reissue. Most of the tunes are descargas and the band swings and so does the trombone. The arrangements and style are highly reminiscent of Beny More's late fifties band a sound that Generoso himself helped to develop. 'El trombon majadero', 'Llegaron del otro mundo' and 'El contrabajo fantasma' are my favorite descargas all composed and arranged by Generoso. This record is a must for any serious lover of Cuban and Latin music.

      Album Description

Experience the power of Matanzas-style Orisha music as performed by Alfredo Calvo (one of the most knowledgeable and talented Afro-Cuban folkloric singers alive today) and his Aña Oba Tola. The CD also presents, for the first time, the incredible sound of the sacred Lukumi Bembe Makagua, which were made in the early 20th century as war drums for the Orisha Chango. The drums are hot and Alfredo's singing is amazing. A must have for all lovers of Orisha music!

The CD is structured around the presentation of a newly initiated priest of Chango, the warrior Orisha of thunder and lightening. In Havana and the United States, such a presentation is a rather cursory affair, but in Matanzas it is the way in which the new priest is presented to the community as well as the drums, and it is an elaborate event. The priest is dressed in the full satin regalia of his or her Orisha, ceremoniously brought out from his throne to be paraded before the community and then presented to the drums. Then the community joins in, singing and dancing as the akpon (lead singer) and the Aña drummers play praise songs to each of the main Orishas. To experience a presentation like this first-hand, please see Kabiosile's DVD "Vamos al Tambor: Presentations in Matanzas, Cuba," also available through Amazon.com.

In addition to the traditional Aña drumming and praise songs, this CD also includes a track of never-before-recorded Lukumi Bembe Makagua drums, which were made as war drums for Chango in the early 20th century. These drums, which are similar to Arara bembe drums, are upright (as opposed to the hourglass across-the-lap style of Aña and bata drums) and are played with sticks (and, in the case of the main drums, one hand and one stick). Alfredo Calvo was present at the birth of the Makagua drums. In recent years, he has created a drumming innovation of bringing in the Bembe drums to play along with the Aña, then switching the entire tambor to Bembe. The sound is unique and powerful. Whatever Orishas didn't come down to join the party before are sure to arrive as soon as the crowd and drums break into "Marele Okuo," which means "Something new has been born." It is an experience not to be missed (and Kabiosile is planning a new DVD to capture and share it with you)!
