Tribute to the Masters

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Percussionist John Santos and his Machete Ensemble have won a devoted following in their native San Francisco Bay Area and among Latin-jazz aficionados the world over with their wide-ranging excursions into Afro-Caribbean music. Tribute to the Masters finds Santos and company paying tribute to individual icons like John Coltrane ("Syeeda's Song Flute"), Dizzy Gillespie ("Salt Peanuts"), and Miles Davis ("So What") as well as to various Afro-Cuban religious music and to different Latin styles in general. Aside from a musical career that includes work with Gillespie, Eddie Palmeiri, Tito Puente, and Francisco Aguabella, Santos has long been known for his scholarly contributions to the field of Afro-Latin music as a writer and historian. In that sense, Tribute to the Masters is a kind of historical survey of Latin music and a natural for Santos. The beauty of the disc, though, is that he and his breathtaking ensemble--which includes legendary guest musicians like bassist Israel "Cachao" Lopez and timbale player Orestes Villato--breathe life into homages to Afro-Cuban Santeria saints ("Chango" and "Iyesa") and fiery Latin-jazz workouts like "Moose the Mooche." --Ezra Gale

5 out of 5 stars Three Master Musicians .......2006-10-08

This is a fine companion to the first Cd by these guys 'Purple Haze' .. These guys are masters of their respective instruments ,all are legends in their own right .. their interpretations on both discs of Jimi's stuff is a very nice listen ..John does not play like Jimi ,John is John , and what a fine guitarist he is..His ECM work is wonderful , especially when teamed with Charles Lloyd . I like the track 'Jimi Meets Miles' on this disc .. makes you wonder ..boy , if only they could have got together in the studio! Great Jazz Power Trio here!!

3 out of 5 stars Not a Hendrix imitation, but a fine tribute.......2003-02-12

Four lengthy interpretations of Hendrix tunes by a relaxed trio of John Abercrombie, Lonnie Smith, and Marvin Smith--this second effort by the trio lags behind their first, less atmospheric effort. Abercrombie retains his identity while spooling out tasty lines of dissonance and happy threads of jazzy melody. But it is Smith who most impresses, pulverizing with abrupt keyboard washes from Mars, while still maintaining a groove and a direction.

1 out of 5 stars GIVE ME A BREAK. , AND ONCE AGAIN NOOOOO STARS?.......1999-05-04

I GUESS AT THIS POINT THE GREAT POPULARITY OF JIMI HENDRIX, THIRTY YEARS AFTER THE FACT, IS NOW SUBJECT TO ANYONE THAT WANTS TO RECORD AND USE HIS GREATNESS TO DECIEVE MUSIC LOVERS. I GUESS JOE PESCHI IS NEXT IN LINE!

5 out of 5 stars Great Latin Jazz.......2006-09-26

I am a little behind the times because I just listened to this CD the other day. I had heard of John Santos but had not listened to much of his work. This CD is really good, some great jazz played with some very cool latin percussion. I like every song on here, some more than others but still every song is good. Great musicians playing great music!

4 out of 5 stars Percussive tribute to the Masters.......2002-10-19

Though it has strong of presence of congas and latin percussion sounds, it is a great delight to listen to tunes such as "So What" from Miles Davis, "Moose the Mooche", or the happiest "Salt Peanuts" from Dizzy Gillespie, in truly great performances. It's a very nice record to listen to and of course swing even sitting at your home office or dining room.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the Wait.......2000-12-05

It took all six weeks for this album to show up at my door, and believe me, it was well worth the wait. Brian Lynch is an amazing trumpet player with the ability to successfully mix strong technique with true feeling. Brian possesses lightning speed, dexterity, and the ability to play in either register with elegant ease. He plays each song from his toes, giving it his all for the simple joy of the music. When I first heard his cover of Thad Jones' Elusive while driving, and had to pullover to give my whole attention to this song.

But, the quartet is not just about showcasing Brian's chops. With Mulgrew Miller on piano, Essiet Essiet on bass and Carl Allen on drums, this is a complete band. Many times, Brian steps back to let his band mates shine through, and they do. Everyone in the quartet is a complete musician, and their love of the music can be heard in each note they play.

"Tribute to the Trumpet Masters" is a mix of covers and original compositions in the style of some of Brian's favorite trumpeters that have influenced him over his career of thirty years. The album is mixed with upbeat tempo like "Woody Shaw" and slow, soulful songs like Freddie Hubbard's "Eclipse" and Lee Morgan's "Search for the New Land". This album has the most power and soul of any in my extensive collection, and is my favorite to date.

    Customer Reviews:

    1 out of 5 stars Awful.......2004-12-09

I bought this because of the Bolcom Concert Suite, but shouldn't have bought it. This recording is awful! Bolcom calls this piece a "High wire act for saxophone", yet the altissimo is awful, inaccurate, and even taken down an octave. It's as easy as this, if you can't play altissimo, then you can't play this piece. Along with horrible altissimo, the rest of the piece has wrong notes, lack of expression. I can't get over that they are selling this! I would really like my money back. If you are interested in the Bolcom, check out Timothy McAllister's recording, much much better, worth the money, correct notes, and nice altissimo. I read a review before I bought it saying it wasn't that great, but I didn't believe them, and thought one more recording of the piece would be nice...I was wrong, take my advice

    3 out of 5 stars Questionable.......2002-10-23

This is a commendable compilation. It is nice to see saxophonists attempt to present the highest quality works possible. This however is far from the best recordings available of these works. The Bolcom concerto is new and exciting, but the performance is quite inaccurate and the soloist struggles with altissimo, projection and intonation. Everything else is rather standard, but not nearly as celebrated as the Dahl concerto. The band has some strengths but exhibits typical problems for college-aged students.

3 out of 5 stars No Creston? No Husa? No Whitney?.......2002-09-27

It's unfortunate that this album is billed as a "definitive" recording of standard works for saxophone and band when it only includes one real "standard" (the Dahl concerto). Why didn't he perform the Creston Concerto, which is certainly a fundamental part of the repertoire? There are many gaps in the program...

5 out of 5 stars DEFINITIVE SAXOPHONE AND BAND RECORDING.......2002-09-25

Among the vast piles of frisbees that comprise the great majority of saxophone and wind recordings, we receive a welcomed break from the norm with James Spinazzola's "Discovery".

Under the leadership of windband juggernaut Joseph Hermann, the Tennessee Tech Symphony Band plays with the utmost precision, careful attention to musicality, and an undefinable knack for style and interpretation.

This recording includes representative works from several of today's more prestigious composers. The Jager Concerto requires a fluent ability to articulate throughout the range, into the extreme altissimo. Spinazzola tackles this with ease, as if he were playing in the middle of the horn. Spinazzola sings through the horn on such numbers as 'Like and Old Folksong' from the Bolcom. The Dahl Concerto, a piece well known (and feared) by saxophone enthusiasts, is performed with taste and phenomenal accuracy. The rich cadenzas and lyrical beauty are complemented by a solid Tennessee Tech Symphony Band.

Folks, this is one hell of a band.

Finally, Spinazzola rips a torrid path of tonguing madness through the Tribute to Rudy Weidoft. The stylistic interpretation and unbelievable technical proficiency are the perfect ending to an already incredible recording.

Take my word - this is the one to get. People will be talking about it for years to come. I know I will.

5 out of 5 stars For what it is, it is perfect........2002-12-12

This is exactly what to expect from these artists. The music is distinctly old country Tubb style. There isn't much fancy musicianship here if any. What there is is solid musicianship and singing with perfect chemistry. The love and respect and friendship are the biggest part of it all. They are being sincere about the music, but also having a great time. The fact that there is so much history here is amazing. Yeah george jones and lorretta Lynn are here, but there is more. On the first track alone you get Willie Nelson and E.T. singing with Charlie McCoy on Harmonica and Charlie Daniels on Guitar! All at once. The charisma of E.t. shines through, loving the music and enjoying the company: saying their names before little instrumental breaks and even a little banter as Ernest says to Johnny Paycheck ' Let's keep it country Johnny ' or Conway twitty says to E.T. 'I'd love to sing that last line with you Ernest but it was just too Low.'. The interplay is worth the price of this ridiculously inexpensive album by itself. All of the songs are perfect old country 28 minutes 32 seconds. One of my favorite stand-bys in my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent ! Worth it's weight in gold !.......1999-03-06

This is REAL traditional country ! ET is joined by a variety of the really great country vocalists and instrumentalists to provide the listener with first rate sounds. Unlike so much of the contemporary "fake" country music, this is the real thing. ENJOY !

5 out of 5 stars RON IS AMAZING! STOP TALKING SMACK!.......2006-08-10

I haven't bought this CD because i have no need.
Ron Wilkins is a personal friend and i will go to bat for him ANY DAY to defend his level of professionalism as a player AND his outstanding personality/character as a human being.

ok. to some guy down below with a musically inflated ego:
I just have one question for you:
can YOU play a full chord or improvise in seven octaves of range on a trombone?

      that's what i thought.

I know mr. wilkins personally, and he is an amazing person AND player. i think if you had any truth to back what you said about your "qualifications", you might've identified yourself.
You sound like a lowbrass player that ron beat out of a spot in a symphony who's either REALLY jealous or REALLY bitter.

until i see YOUR resume, don't talk trash about ron.
you have a WHOLE lot of musically inclined people out there who beg to differ with your VERY begative comments, mr.mysterio .
using big fancy words to make college kids that commented on their favorite clinician feel inferior about their musical choice is about as immature as it gets. even if he couldn't do all the crazy jazz that you say he can't, why would you rag on people for LIKING what they LIKE. MUSIC is about DIVERISITY. and EMOTION. NOT about what you say would make sense on a peice of sheetmusic, since apparently that's all you've ever looked at. i'm sure the best improvisational player on earth too, right?

so if you are right, you are far superior to the rest of the musical community who has been greatly deceived by mr.wilkins.

he has all of our respect, be it we were fooled by his trickery or that his true colors really show what one can do with
      focus dedication and determination.

and don't brag about your "perfect pitch".
here's the big secret:you might not be the ONLY ONE ON EARTH who can hear that.
get over yourself and find a good mirror the next time you wanna pick on a hypocritical musician.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome Music; Wonderful Man!.......2004-06-20

I don't know how anyone could have anything bad to say about this cd. I've owned it for several years now, and it amazes me everytime I hear it. I know Ron personally and have since I was knee high to him. He's a wonderful person, and an absolutely wonderful musician! It appalled me to read other reviews claiming that he cannot improvise. You cannot judge a person's improvisation skills by listening to a cd... it's impossible to do so. You really have to hear the person live to truly see how they improvise. Also, you should never base your reviews or criticisms on a person's ability to play live on another's experience. I am sure that people who have more than 20 years musical experience would agree that Ron Wilkins has incredible talent and wonderful "stage presence." In fact, I know so, because I know several musical professors for the University of Texas feel that he's sensational and his ability is one which normal people only DREAM of accomplishing. And if he ever begs for money, he's justified in doing so, as being a professional musician is his occupation. He has no side job... To prove that I am not biased, I have studied music at the University of Texas, as well as being an accomplished musician for more than 20 years on clarinet, percussion, guitar, and piano. I have also given lessons for years to young musicians in the area.

1 out of 5 stars Wilkins cannot improvise, SORRY........2004-03-26

I'm sure Ron is a nice guy and everything, but he just doesn't know how to improvise. SORRY. The man can't blow changes. The other negative reviews were right, and I'm sorry I didn't see them before plunking down $17 for this CD. I like trombone for jazz but there's too many cats who just can't cut it. He is one of the many in that category.
To any of the non-improvising people out there who disagree, take this test: listen to what he plays in his solos and when he's not going "dickee-dickee-dickee" on non-pitches, take down his solo on music staff paper. TRANSCRIBE IT. If you can. If you are intelligent enough to know or hear the chord changes being played behind Wilkins at the time, then you will know what all serious musicians know and can IMMEDIATELY hear- that he has not done his homework and is FOOLING all of those positive reviewers. He plays almost no correct notes most of the time and is relying on the extreme high buzzing chops to distract people. JJ, Andy Martin, McChesney, Curtis Fuller and Steve Turre never stoop to this silliness.
And if you cannot HEAR that he is blowing junk or don't possess the skill to transcribe and notate pitch and rhythm, ACCEPT that others more knowledgeable than you just might be RIGHT.
Music is one of those things where people can rave about stuff that's so bad that if it was a car, NO ONE would ever pay for it. But the average white consumer with tin ears and negligible rhythm is fooled by anything that they are told is good. And if a musician like Wilkins is constantly playing BAD notes, I can't call them a GOOD musician. You wouldn't call a mechanic who couldn't fix your car a genius if he just ACTED like he REALLY knew what he was doing, would you?
By the way, I will be reselling my copy of this album on amazon.com, and I hope I can get every penny back. Another thing-- Ron's singing is really embarrassing to sit through. Some people have no shame, I guess. But then I heard from a friend about a jazz club in Texas called the Landing where the band goes around the patio with a hat BEGGING the people eating dinner for tips..........turns out it was Wilkins' band, and it was him on trombone that night...(we checked the name of the group and the schedule on the Internet to be sure)....not surprising, I guess. Also it was reported by the eyewitness that Wilkins performed in a muscle shirt that night...and waved his trombone slide over my friend's food while he was toodling.....he sang Wonderful World twice in one set, too.......

5 out of 5 stars Can't wait for the next disc!!.......2004-02-17

Ron is a monster bone player that I have had the honor to hear in person for many years in San Antonio, whenever I attend an annual music convention. He displays a great flexibility, outlandish range, and just a velvet-like tone on both tenor and bass trombone. He is a tremendous human being as well, just a super guy, with absolutely no hang-ups, which I think is very cool. If you are ever in town; check him out, and BUY THIS CD !!!! I promise that you will be glad you did!!!

5 out of 5 stars One of the FEW trombone JAZZ MASTERS!!!.......2001-10-25

Ron possesses several gifts. He is a master trombone player that can captivate the audience with his singing and playing ability. He is also a featured EDWARDS clinician and tours world, sharing his talent. The CD is truely a TRIBUTE to the masters... and should be heard by ALL trombone lovers!

      5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2003-06-11

An impressive modern big band recording. From the lush harmonies of 'To You' to the atonal schizophrenia of 'ABC blues,' this is a brilliant display of contemporary composition in a pure jazz form. The latin number, '5 1/2 weeks,' features one of the finest sax solos ever recorded on a big band album. It's short, but Ted Nash teaches a masterclass on how to lay down a melody over a rhythm section, while at the same time weaving around the rest of the horn section. The arranging, composition, and soloing skills of this band are second to none, and this album puts their best efforts on display.

This was the first Mel Lewis/Village Vanguard orchestra album I ever bought, and it turned me on to the rest of their work. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Hard Driving Organization........2002-12-07

This is a recording made less than a year after Mel's death and while not being familiar with his band, I can certainly understand the fan enthusiasm for the music. It's like no other I've heard although flash mental associations with the music of Stan Kenton, Bob Florence, and as crazy as it may seem.... even the sound of Claude Thornhill (possibly because of the french horn and some of the harmonies).

The title song, written by Thad Jones, is pure beauty.

The leadoff track has a wild beginning and some good tenor work by Ralph Lalama. The liner notes aptly describe this as "controlled fury".

Ted Nash's "5 1/2 Weeks" has a nice Latin touch.

The old standard "A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square" comes off really good with an arrangement that does a lot of things with tempos and timing.

"Nocturne" by pianist Kenny Werner is a beautiful piece of work with a nice solo by Joe Lovano.

The Bob Brookmeyer original, "ABC Blues", has a little bit of everything from variations in time to swing. Some great baritone work on this one by Gary Smulyan. I'm amazed that this sounds so contemporary considering it was written back in 1966!

The other Werner composition, "Bob Brookmeyer" has some fantastic solos by Dick Oatts on soprano sax and Ted Nash on alto.

This is a great contemporary big band sound and I'm surprised that as popular as I've heard the Mel Lewis band was, that this album ranks so low in sales on Amazon.
