About the Artist
may not have invented rock nostalgia, but the group has successfully - very successfully - celebrated the music and the memories for the past three decades…in clubs and in concert, in the movies and on TV, and on record. Sha Na Na's story is an all-encompassing one: They were in the original Woodstock Festival lineup, starred in the film "Grease" (the most successful movie musical ever), hosted the "Sha Na Na" TV series for four years, and still play more than 100 concerts a year, from state fairs to performing arts centers, casino showrooms to mega corporate functions world wide.

And through it all - flower power, hard rock, heavy metal, disco, hip hop, rap, and more - Sha Na Na remains true to the original concept: Rock 'n' Roll is Here to Stay!

The Sha Na Na story begins oddly for a group that, in appearance, runs the gamut from greaser to gold lame. Attired in turtlenecks and blue blazers, the nucleus of Sha Na Na were undergraduate members of The Kingsmen, a glee club ensemble at New York's Columbia University that used to perform a cappella versions of '50s rock songs as part of the performances.

These proved hugely popular and eventually rock 'n' roll took over, instruments were added and Sha Na Na (the name comes from the Silhouettes' 1958 hit "Get A Job") was born.

Heard of Woodstock?

If the original 1969 Woodstock Festival was a defining moment in rock history, it was also a defining moment in the history of Sha Na Na. The group's appearance - only the seventh in Sha Na Na's career and followed by the Woodstock album and movie -- cemented their reputation and style. "We went on second to last, at sunrise on the final day, but, importantly, just before Jimi Hendrix," recalls co-founder, drummer Jocko Marcellino. "We did 40 minutes and were paid $300…and the check bounced!"

Sha Na Na was the only group at Woodstock without a record deal. Immediately afterward, they had one with Buddah/Kama Sutra Records, and today the group has released more than 25 albums in total, with worldwide sales of more than 20 million, including the double album "The Golden Age of Rock & Roll," which went gold.

TV was another important step for the group…

The group taped 97 episodes of the Sha Na Na music variety show from 1977 to 1981 that were seen - and still can be - in worldwide syndication. The shows, which featured Sha Na Na's music plus the group in comedy skits with special guests, further established the group's credentials as a part of the landscape of rock 'n' roll America.

The movie "Grease" became another significant building block in the Sha Na Na story. The group appeared in the 1979 musical as Johnny Casino and the Gamblers, and contributed to the original music score with six Sha Na Na versions of rock classics and one original song, "Sandy," co-written by Screamin' Scott Simon for John Travolta to sing. (Between takes, Travolta also sang a little doo-wop with the group.)

The accompanying "Grease" soundtrack album was a major hit, Grammy-nominated, and certified eight times platinum.

Live performances remain at the heart of Sha Na Na. Whether it is the Girl Scouts or their baby boomer parents, the reaction to the group is the same - the discovery of a common joy in the music from a time when part of the world was "greased and ready to rock and roll."

Only half the songs of the original set!!.......2007-01-17

Although I love the CDs, I was disappointed that there were only about half of the songs I thought there would be. I bought the original double cassette set back in the early 90's and when I found the CDs with the same name and cover, I thought I was getting the same thing only on CD. But the Cassettes had twice as many songs, including Let it Snow,Have Yourself a merry Little Christmas,The First Noel, Jingle Bells by Jim Reeves, The Christmas song by the Carpenters and so many others!!

A Good Basic Collection.......2006-02-11

This is a good, basic collection of Christmas Music. As a general rule, Time-Life has selected what is probably the definative artist/arangement of each song.

My only complaints are that there are only 24 songs on two disks and one or two of them are not ones that I would have picked (not my style).

Overall, it's a good set that I would recommend to anyone who wants to start a collection.

The only good thing about this collection is the inclusion of so many Christmas standards. I was very disappointed in the quality of the recordings, they obviously need digital inhancement.

THE BEST VIENNA BOYS CHOIR CHRISTMAS MUSIC!!.......2005-06-01

This wonderful collection of Christmas music is especially good! Many pieces are very well known standards, and have been rewritten in ways that keep the music fresh, interesting and new! Every holiday season (and even throughout the year) this CD is played by our family quite a bit! [I may be a little biased, since my 12 year old son from Cincinnati, OH is one of the boys singing in most of the songs!] It is awesome!!

Heart-stopping Beauty for Christmas.......2005-12-06

I was late to an appointment, snow was starting to slick the roads, and I was not even comforted by the usual carol music on my car radio. Suddenly, this incredible soprano, backed by a gorgeous orchestration, began to sing the most exultant, joyous hymn for Christmas I have ever heard in my life. I turned the vollume up full and pulled off the road, just closing my eyes and listening. I waited until the CD was identified -- Jessie Norman at Notre Dame. I won't mention the cut because all of them are superb, but if you are lucky enough to get your hands on this collector's item, listen for the words "Jubilate!" I do not know why this CD went out of circulation. Nothing else I've ever heard even comes close to its beauty. Do what you have to to get hold of this and hear the magnificent Jessye carol her heart out!!!! I wish there were a 10-star rating!

Great Christmas CD.......2004-11-25

This is a magnificent recording with an 'atmosphere' that I can't quite describe. You can just imagine yourself in that great Cathedral at this beautiful Christmas concert. This is one of my all time favourite Christmas CDs.

Jessye Norman = Christmas.......2004-05-08

In just a few short years since I first heard Jessye Norman's Christmastide album, Jessye has become a voice that simply makes Christmas special for me. The grace and power she possesses are nearly unmatched in the vocal world, and her ability to shape pure emotion in her singing is uncommon.
She also gets the best venues, arrangers, and performing partners. How could you beat the cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris? The orchestrations and orchestra are both superb. A must have for anyone's Christmas collection.

Excellent Mens Corale (about 100 men) sing inspiring Christmas Music !!!.......2005-11-22

This is probably the best men's chorus (approximately 100 singers from across America) I have ever heard recorded. The album jacket indicates each of the participants are professionals.

The songs are extremely well orchestrated and a wide variety of Christian Christmas music is provided. The track "Beautiful Star of Bethlehem is breathtaking. I heard this track about 3 years ago and kept searching for the CD until I recently found it on Amazon. I have played it almost continually since I received the album.

If Brenda Lee had not recorded "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" in 1958, the holidays would not quite be the same. But for those who think that Lee's Christmas repertoire begins and ends with that beloved tune, they need to put this disc on their wish list. The Decca Christmas Recordings is a charming collection of Lee's holiday work, both known and obscure. And the range is fairly compelling. Moving from the lovably offbeat sentiments of the bayou-influenced "Papa Noel" and the angry child's take on the fat man "I'm Gonna Lasso Santa Claus" to more somber fare such as "Christmas Will Be Just Another Lonely Day," and the peculiar "Strawberry Snow," Lee's unforgettable vocal style leaves a perfect imprint. Her little hiccup-tinged singing voice is a hallmark of the season, making this 18-track set a true gift. --Martin Keller

Lousy cd!.......2003-10-23

This great music from Brenda Lee deserved better representation than this lame cd. For some unknown
reason, the label reissued these wonderful performances - but used a mono source instead of the readily available stereo sources! What a waste of money! I'm happy to see it's now pulled from the market. The new 18 song package from The Millenium series is superior AND THEY ARE IN STEREO FINALLY! So don't waste your $ on this junk!

Much more than Rockin' around the Christmas tree.......2002-08-26

Brenda is one of those singers - just like Bing Crosby - who's most famous song is a Christmas classic, despite a vast catalog of other material. On this collection, Brenda demonstrates her skills on a wide variety of Christmas songs, although there is only one carol (Silent night).

The oldest recordings here (from 1956, when Brenda was only 11) are Christy Christmas and I'm gonna lasso Santa Claus - this song is quite amusing but also has a moral tale, as it points out that Santa is more generous to the rich than the poor. Sadly, that will always be true.

In 1958, Brenda recorded Papa Noel, a cajun-flavored song, and Rockin' around the Christmas tree. Expected to be a massive hit, it missed the charts completely, though Brenda wasn't yet in the big time. Following the multi-million selling I'm sorry in 1960, a decision was taken to try again that Christmas. This time, the song went high in the charts, not just in America, but around the world.

The remainder of these songs, except the last three (which were recorded in 1965, but remained unissued outside Japan until the release of this CD), were first released on Brenda's original Christmas album in 1964, which also included some of the earlier tracks, including (of course) Rockin' around the Christmas tree.

Some of the songs were originally popularized by other singers, including Jingle bell rock (Bobby Helms), White Christmas and Silver bells (both Bing Crosby), This time of the year (Brook Benton) and Blue Christmas (Ernest Tubb, but made even more popular by Elvis), but Brenda's vocal style makes her versions distinctive, even though the arrangements are mostly faithful to the originals. It's a marshmallow world is a brilliant song which had already appeared on the Phil Spector Christmas album, though I don't know it's origin.

What really makes this album, though, are the original songs. Pure christmas classic.......2002-07-18

This is one of my favorite christmas records growing up.
Every year I have personal tradition of starting my christmas music playing by playing this record first. I had the CD version with only ten songs. This CD has all twelve of the original songs plus three songs that were added after this record was made plus three songs that Brenda Lee recorded when she was younger, Two were recorded when she was eleven years old! I'm gonna lasso Santa Claus is an adorable song about a little girl who wants to bring chrismas joy to everyone. Of course Johnny Marks "Rockin around the christmas tree" and Bobby Helms "Jingle Bell Rock" are pure classics. "Christmas will be just another lonely day" soars with its orchestral acompaniment.

Christmas Would Be Just Another Day without Brenda Lee!.......2001-08-03

This is a great CD. But of course all Brenda's are. If you aren't in the Christmas mood, put this CD on and you'll feel the spirit of Christmas right away. The Angel And the Little Blue Bell will be sure to give you a tingle. I just love this song. Although I like the standards, it is nice to have fresh songs like Strawberry Snow and Marshmallow World. Christmas just wouldn't be Christmas without the dynamic Christmas music provided by The One and Only, Brenda Lee!

A Christmas Tradition.......2000-12-14

Brenda Lee's Christmas songs have been a part of my holiday celebrations for over 30 years. My children look forward to singing the tunes every year while decorating our tree and opening gifts. I too looked for years for copies of the original "A Brenda Lee Christmas" and was thrilled to find a CD a few years back, but it was an incomplete recording of my favorites, No "Santa Claus is Coming to Town", and no "Frosty" It is wonderful to finally add this to my collection!

Lots of rare gems.......2001-12-30

For those of us who enjoy Christmas without Bing Crosby, this CD is just what the doctor ordered. There are lots of great Xmas rarities on here, and it's nice to have them all on one CD to play at the annual holiday parties. There are a couple of duds, but music is a subjective thing, so don't take my word for it.

YOU CAN'T BEAT THE PRICE FOR SOME OF THESE HOLIDAY GEMS.......2001-08-13

I picked this holiday collection up a few years ago & it quickly became a MUST-PLAY Christmas cd. Some of the tunes are true rock & roll yuletide classics-such as Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer by The Smithereens, Rock & Roll Christmas by George Thorogood, along with Christmas Is The Time(To Say I Love You)by Billy Squier. However, I was thrilled upon first hearing Lovin' Little Christmas by Danny Tate! This song immediately caught my attention & I found myself playing it at least another 3 times before letting the cd play to the end. I wish Danny Tate had recorded an entire album of Christmas songs, also that Lovin' Little Christmas would receive some air-play around holiday time! This guy is a major find & while I did see 2 albums for Danny Tate here on Amazon, I can't help wondering why he's not up there with other major rock acts. Anyway, while I'm not too crazy about The ... Surfers or The Red-Hot Chili Peppers, it is a fun album all in all and you can't go wrong by sending for this collection & listening to it for years to come. Very highly recommended.

Very good third Wiggles Christmas album.......2005-04-20

This is the third Wiggles Christmas album and we just really like it. The first one is still our favorite but this one throws in a couple of neat curves. Such as having an old rocker sing "Every Christmas This Child is Born Again." Can't remember the guy's name, but he sang "Eagle Rock" on Space Dancing, if you have that CD/video. I like these Christmas Wiggles CDs because they also put in the real meaning of Christmas in their original songs, not just ho, ho, ho and everything reindeer and Santa. It was an interesting thing to see Barry Williams (aka, Greg Brady) on there too. Not sure why that was there but, oh well.

Anyway, my only drawback to this video is that Mexican trio is back again. I don't know why they keep appearing but I think they're terrible and I'm asked to skip over that song all the time. Unfortunately, they're singing "Silent Night," my favorite Christmas song of all time. But, this is a good CD and one that keeps getting played thoughout the year in our Wiggle household. Recommend!

Why Barry Williams?.......2004-11-29

A decent effort by the Wiggles and producer Paul Field. This is my least favorite of the Wiggles' Christmas efforts. Music is almost too flashy, and, quite honestly, I fail to see why anyone in their right mind would want Barry Williams (Greg Brady) headlining any of their artistic endeavors. Still, a fun listen on the road with the kids.

The Wiggles are a toddler phenomenon. My son loves them but a couple of their more recent music hasn't grabbed him as much. But this one has new , fresh stuff from the wiggles about christmas and Santa and some favorite Christmas tunes, done very well. Greg has a great voice. This is now my son's favorite.
