Sviraj (pronounced SVEE-rye) is one of the few authentic tamburitza outfits active in the U.S. The style hails from Eastern European nations like Croatia, Macedonia, and Romania, and is heavily influenced by local Roma (Gypsy) populations. The lineup typically calls for nimble-fingered string players (in this case including fiddle, cello, guitar, and indigenous plucked instruments such as the prim and brac) and close-harmony vocals. Although a tad talky onstage, Sviraj are blessedly free of pedantic attitudes. Their technical aplomb is tempered by passion, soulfulness, and folksy humor. They are clearly having a blast playing to a hometown crowd at the University of Pennsylvania on this double-CD album, which preserves two sets performed on a single night, plus the participation of Zvonko Bogdan, a septuagenarian singer who flew in from Serbia especially for the occasion. Disc two is enhanced with live videos of three songs, song translations, and other features. --Christina Roden

Three decades-and-change since they disintegrated in a burst of self-abuse and self-fulfilling prophecy, the darlings of '70s proto-punk/glam stage a return to the recording studio that's as unlikely as it is good-natured. The opening triptych of "We're All in Love," "Runnin' Around," and the downright nostalgic "Plenty of Music" argues that remaining band members David Johanson and Syl Sylvain are more interested in celebrating their survival with a little sass than rehashing the sonic anarchy that made them. Yet veteran producer Jack Douglas never lets the band (now featuring Hanoi Rocks bassist Sammi Yaffa, guitarist Steve Conte, Brian Koonin on keyboards, and drummer Brian Delaney) become too absorbed in more focused songcraft here, injecting the same edgy, pop-buzz he imparted to Cheap Trick and Aerosmith on the infectious soul-punk single "Dance Like a Monkey" and elsewhere. Helping celebrate the Dolls revival in fine fashion are guest turns by Iggy Pop (the frantic "Gimme Luv & Turn On the Light") and Michael Stipe (who harmonizes on the ballad "Dancing on the Lip of the Volcano"), as well as Against Mel's Tom Gabel on the trademark rave-up "Punishing World." The Dolls have always been a triumph of attitude over art; ultimately little has changed here other than the bracing exuberance they bring with them this time 'round. First pressings of the release contain a 45-minute "making of" featurette as well as the bonus track "17," a lugubrious workout featuring Dolls inspiration/rock progenitor Bo Diddley. --Jerry McCulleyAlbum Description
Now in 2006, The NEW YORK DOLLS return with the follow-up to 1974's Too Much Too Soon that proves that the band hasn't lost a step and that they are ready to show the world what they've been missing. The new studio album "One Day It Will Please Us To Remember Even This" captures the spirit of a band that had disappeared long before rock n roll became about big business, and presents the essence of fun, revelatory Rock N Roll in its purest form.Customer Reviews:
Thirty plus years for the third New York Dolls album, worth the wait!.......2007-08-05
Best Stones album since Draw The Line! .......2007-08-01
The lifts here are fearless: Faces, Stones, Cheap Trick, Neil Young, even themselves! Hey, that's primordial! Sure, any 24-year-old bonehead coulda made this album but, that's not the point; it requires genius to get this much elemental noise outta 50-year-olds.
Best reunion EVER.
Seeing Jack Douglas' name on the cover didn't inspire my confidence and that AOR intro on the 1st tune had me sure nervous. But the instant Johansen's rasp oozes all over the verse, whew, I sure KNEW. "Who could imagine this when I was young" - like hell YEAH.
And, jeez, does Johansen look HOT on the cover! Damn! Wish I was gay!

Album Description
Jerry Goldsmith's death in 2004 marked the end of one of the greatest careers in film composing. This lavish 57 track 4 CD set traces the path of his astonishing achievements and includes recordings conducted by Goldsmith himself. Featuring The City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, The Philharmonia Orchestra, The National Philharmonic Orchestra, and The Daniel Caine Orchestra. Includes over 280 minutes of music.Customer Reviews:
Awesome Set!.......2007-07-01
Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03
Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11
Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).
Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".
It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.
But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.
Jerry Goldsmith - 40 years of pleasure.......2006-02-22
Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31
However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.
However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.
Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

EPICS THAT DO NOT DISAPPOINT.......2007-05-14
Interesting selections . . ........2006-12-15
The reason I give this album 4 out of 5 stars is because of the swashbuckler section. How is it that CutThroat Island - one of the greatest epics in history - was scrubbed out of the list? Pirates of the Caribbean is included on the selection but nothing from Debney's masterpiece?!
Yes, that is a huge compilant. If you haven't discovered CutThroat Island, I suggest you get it then you'll understand my frustration. Still, this album is a great buy and worth looking into!
