When's the last time you thought of the tuba as a cool instrument? Well, Bosnian composer Goran Bregovic certainly has--he made it the centerpiece of this stunning collection of music on which he and Polish singer Kayah collaborated. Here an exotic Eastern-tinged mix of old-world Polish folk, Byzantine and Yiddish sounds, and dance beats swirl together for a most original portrait of alternative Polish music. No wonder this release is Poland's biggest-selling album ever. Masterfully it emanates the haunting darkness of Eastern Europe with violin, oud, guitar, and tuba while travailing the border of the contemporary pop world. Bregovic expertly twists the fat beats around the fiddles and Near East finger bells on "Spij Kochanie, Spij," while he somehow pulls out a heavy, infectious dance groove from a tuba on "100 Lat." On the dramatically bold "Jesli Bóg Istnieje," Yemenite singer Ofra Haza is paid tribute for a passionately melancholy song evoking the dignity and pain of peasant Europe. Kayah's voice is nothing less than powerful and emotive--effortless in its reach to tenderness on "Ta-Bakiera," playfully energetic on "Prawy do Lewego," and bemoaning, mystical, and fervent on most every other tune. A wondrous album not to be missed. --Karen Karleski

1 out of 5 stars This album stinks!.......2004-03-07

After reading the reviews from Amazon, I purchased this album (it took nearly a month to receive it). There is just too much electronic music(should I say electronic noises disguised as music?), often times covering up Kayah's voice. What a letdown.

        5 out of 5 stars Kayah I love you..........1999-01-30

Kayah is amazing. She can do anyhing. And that voice. It has anything you've ever dreamt of. Filled with sex and magic. One of the best albums I have ever listend to. Get it!!! It's your duty.

          5 out of 5 stars Slovian Soul...........2006-08-04

If you are homesick and want to hear familiar to your soul sounds you simply must have this one! the colaboration between Bregovic and Kayah resulted in a fruitful blend of instruments, melody and sounds that can break anybody's heart, especially those far away from their lands. It makes you cry, laugh, dance and sing, and most of all, makes you go back to your roots in Eastern Europe, because there is nowhere like home. Although the CD was first out in 1999, I am glad to finaly see it showing up on the international market, so more people can be exposed to the gentle sounds of the Slovian soul and heritage.

5 out of 5 stars The most emotional, ingenious neo-traditional album yet........2005-09-09

This is the most powerful alternative folk album with emotional, brilliantly written, unfogettable and moving music and lyrics, and ideas that inspire. A timeless piece of music that will make you shed a tear.

Kayah's vocals and expressions are just perfect.

Obviously music is subjective, and there may be people who don't like a song or what not, but they are missing the point. Everything is extremely well thoughout out, produced, arranged, and executed in a most striking and captivating way.

I wish there were more albums of this caliber.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as it could be..........2003-09-05

definitly the collaboration between the world of pop (Kayah) and the world of etno (Goran) could be much more interesting...some tracks are great ("spij kochanie spij") some are just good ("tabakiera") and some are simply bad ("prawy do lewego")...why?
Kayah has got not so impressive voice, but she feels good in all the Goran style but definitly she could brought the special atmosphere to all of these songs.i din;t know if Gorans new compositions are not enough interesting or maybe Kayah just do not fit in htem...i know one thing - the best songs from here are the covers of Goran's older works...
it is a good album, although do not expect the "Goran etno sound heaven" or a masterpiece...it is just not as great as it could be.definitly mostly for Goran fans.anyway - for everyone else - get "Arizona Dream", his best album.

3 out of 5 stars Kayah is great and so is Bregovic , so why it doesn't work ?.......2003-05-27

I think the music that Bregovic done at the movies is great
but here with Kayah it sounds like something is missing.
Kayah is great but it sounds like we've heard it before and
it was even better , so what's the point doin it again ?
For those who heard this music for the first time i guess it
sounds great but i reckon you should go for the 'real thing',
the music of Bregovic as it's at the movies or Kayas solo albums.

          5 out of 5 stars Super Kayah.......2002-02-02

Beautiful mixture of european cultures makes Kayah a real star.

Finally. I've just read that the remix CD is going to be released in Poland in March. If you know 2 amazing remixes on this version be prepared for more. Also Kayah is working on at least English version of this album and possibly on other language versions. Europe is ready for best Polish singer! Is America? My friends here love her. Kayah, good luck. I know you'll make it. "Aniol wiedzial..." Piotr

            5 out of 5 stars Kayah rules..........2000-06-04

I have all her CD's. And I was addicted to her even before she started her solo career. She was the "background" voice on many Polish hits in the '80 and '90. Then came "Kamien", a beautiful and sad and difficult record that almost no-one bought. Then she gave us "Zebra", great music and wonderful lyrics. And of course "Kayah&Bregovic", great success and fame. I love "K&B". She sounded so mature there and her lyrics were so beautiful. I could not wait for a new album. And my friend sent it to me as soon as it was released. I listend to it once, twice and more times. And I LOVE it. Kayah is an ARTIST. She did not go the easy way. She did something that surprised everyone. Her new music is a revelation. A great mix of "dansy" songs and beautiful ballads. But it's not pop music we all know from any radio station. It's very different. Different styles and moods even within one song. And again beautiful and meaningful lyrics. Kayah, thank you for doing all this. Your music means so much to me. And by the way, listen to her voice and style. She said a long time ago that she learnt a lot from the Queen of Soul. And you can hear that. My favorites at the moment: "Aniol Wiedzial", "Za Blisko", "Nie Wiedzialam", "Jak Ja Kayah", "Nie Patrzysz"... Just cannot wait for the promised bonus CD with the remixes and the duet with Cesaria Evora... Kayah, nie pozwol nikomu Cie zmienic. Love. Piotr P.S. Dzieki za te video clipy, nie mialem szansy obejrzenia 2 z nich przedtem. "Prawy do lewego" bardzo smieszny. I uwielbiam projekt okladki. Piekne oczy!.

5 out of 5 stars Latest release from Polish pop diva is a winner.......2000-06-01

If any artist deserves international exposure and acclaim, it's Kayah, Poland's most popular female pop star. An ingeniously versatile singer and songwriter who changes musical styles almost as often as hairstyles, she's Eastern Europe's answer to Madonna, only with better pipes and genuine songwriting talent. In fact, she's so good, she puts other Polish musical exports, like the nasally-afflicted Basia, to shame.

On "Jaka Ja Kayah," her latest solo album, Kayah showcases her phenomenal talent by creating an alluring hybrid of techno, jazz, and pop balladry. With its Middle Eastern grooves, the album's title track echoes the sound of last year's smash-hit album in Poland "Kayah i Bregovic," a gypsy-inflected blend of Polish and Balkan folk music recorded with Croatian composer Goran Bregovic. Deeper into the new record, the lovely ballad "Nie Wiedzialam (o synku)" sets velvety vocals and contemplative lyrics to mellow sax riffs, while other tracks pump out infectious techno and dance beats. Throughout, Kayah's strong, emotive voice and innovative songcraft propel the album, and for those lucky enough to know Polish, her artful lyrics add another layer of depth to an already accomplished work. A great album for fans of world pop, who should enjoy discovering this exciting new star on the rise.

            5 out of 5 stars A MASTERPIECE...........2004-04-26

To me, Kayah is the most original and unique singer to come out of Poland. This album is no disappointment! "Testosteron" is truly a fun song that will have you program it on 'repeat' in your CD player. Other fun songs include "Jeszcze ta Noc" and "Teren Zaminowany" as well as the English-language track "Do It Right"....they will make you smile and laugh, if you're familiar with Polish of course. My favorite ballad on the album is "Dziele Na Pol", it takes a while to unwind and get to the chorus, but trust me, it is worth waiting. Overall, the album is SPACTACULAR, and (for me) replaces "Zebra" as my all time favorite Kayah album. Can't wait for more in the coming years. THANK YOU KAYAH!!!! LOVE YA!!

            5 out of 5 stars Absolutely stunning.......2004-01-11

Kayah proves again that she's a true and mature artist. This album is a return to the mood of her first record "Kamien". It's a diary of her recently finished marriage (not a happy one, you can tell). One big hit "Testosteron" is a great and catchy dance song with fantastic lyrics that does not really fit here but I love it netherless (and hey, you need a radio hit once in a while...). But just listen to very very sad "Dziele na pol", beautiful and devastating gem "Twoja Dlon" (my favorite song of 2003) and R&B flavored "Wiekszy apetyt". Not a single weak song. Kayah sounds wonderful (to say the least) and the production is simply amazing. Excellent follow up to her previous masterpiece "Yakayakayah". Only one bonus song in English (with a sample of Bad Girls from Donna Summer) will make you get on your feet. Maybe some day she'll be known outside Poland but for now her music makes my days. Kayah, please, give us more.
