An Operatic Treasure.......2006-01-07

There are some splendid recordings of this opera in the original German, especially the one conducted by Kurt Eichhorn, but this one is treasurable in its own right. Conductor Mario Bernardi shares with Eichhorn the true measure of how the score should go. They both lead this delightful work better than any of the more famous maestros who lead it in other recordings. Originating in a 1963 production by the Sadler's Wells Opera, it is sung in English. This is a strong plus for me, since I learned from Boris Goldovsky to approach opera as drama, not as a concert, and audience appreciation of opera as drama starts with understanding the text as its sung, not from following a printed translation. The Constance Bache translation used here is sometimes criticized as old fashioned, but I think it's far more agreeable than one using contemporary colloquialisms or slang would be. It can even be heard as "distancing" the proceedings slightly, which is appropriate for a fairytale. (It's worth noting that, in his oft-quoted description of opera as "exotic and irrational," Dr. Johnson was not referring to opera as a whole, but to opera sung in Italian to English-speaking audiences in London; those who quote him seldom make that clear.)
The Sadler's Wells cast is very fine. As Hansel and Gretel, Patricia Kern and Margaret Neville are lively and involved in the drama, and they don't make the mistake of adopting any of the vocal mannerisms sometimes used by others in these roles to try to sound like children. (It never works because the music wasn't composed for children to sing.) Rita Hunter and Raimund Herincx as the young parents show the solid qualities of singing and interpretation that earned them international admiration later in their careers.
The Witch offers the widest range of possibilities for interpretation. She can begin harmlessly and turn terrifying abruptly. She can begin by insinuating herself slyly with the children and slowly turn menacing. She can start out as a doddering grandma and slip into nastiness once the children are where she wants them. There is even a tradition in Europe to cast a tenor singing falsetto, which can work on stage; Nathaniel Merrill followed the tradition successfully in his production at the Metropolitan years ago.
In this recording Ann Howard takes a straightforward approach. She manages the change from elderly innocence into a monster nicely with vocal coloration and attention to the words. She delivers some effective cackles and threatening whispers, but young listeners probably wouldn't find her very frightening. (The only truly scary Witch I've heard is Marjana Lipovsek in the recording led by Jeffrey Tate.)
This recording got a national endorsement of sorts years ago when live Met broadcasts could not start on schedule because of a strike. The sponsor went ahead with the broadcast series using commercial recordings, including the original LP release of this one.
Wagner's "Siegfried Idyll" conducted by Sir Colin Davis fills out the second disc. The choice is not as odd as it might at first seem. Humperdinck was strongly influenced by Wagner (he worked at Bayreuth), and Wagner's piece was written as a serenade to his wife on the birth of their son, Siegfried. The performance is nothing special, but it's a nice added sweetmeat.

Finally! The Classic Sadler's Wells Opera Remastered.......2003-11-20

This recording is THE DEFINITIVE version of Engelbert Humperdinck's Opera Hansel and Gretel. Sung in English Recorded by EMI in 1964, and released in the US as a Capitol Records Classical Recording. I owned Two copies one in Mono and One In Stereo, and with fondness I recall how as a youngster I was drawn into the world of Grand Opera through this recording. This performance not only musically but theatrically captures the dynamics of the music/subject matter.
The performers don't merely sing their performance but act with such depth that you close your eyes and are swept away to that place that good theatre, and opera takes us to. I get the sense when listening that these artists loved what they did. The libretto is a translation that is very BRITISH, and you don't hear in more modern versions. I find Constance Bach's adaptation charming, and when listening to any other version be it in Enlgish, or in German I hear the Constance Bach libretto.
EMI's reissue was inevitable, but only through contiually checking periodically over the 20 years since digital recording and remastering came to consumers, did I find out that these were available... and all sources except for amazon marketplace couldn't guarantee a copy. The job that was done remastering is very impressive. I have over the years used my cassette copy, and with de-hiss processors made a recording that was listenable...(my lp's were destroyed in a flood), but nothing could prepare me for the richness especially in the bass and it also reduced the harshness of the upper winds. Some analog anomolies still exist on this recording, but to say the least I am quite pleased. This is a must listen to to anyone into opera.

Loved IT.......2003-09-01

Ok, well I don't speak a word of French, but loved the album. I heard the song "Au Soleil" on the radio in Spain, and thought it was in English until I tried to by the CD and the lady at the store said that there was no song like that in English and played Jenifer, which was it. I love the CD and am glad I picked it up.

Jenifer won the french version of "American Idol" in 2001. The show is what it is and I imagined the worst about this CD. But I have been surprised in a good way. I often listen to it I got it.

The new French Diva!.......2003-05-11

Jennifer won the "Star Academy" contest in January 2002, this album was released two months later, and I must admitt that for a first album, It's a masterpiece! It has sold over 1,5 million copies in France alone, so it has been certified diamond record!
I love all the songs in the album, but my favorites are : "donne moi le temps" and "que reste t'il?" ( two amazing ballads!); There is also "au soleil"(her biggest hit), "des mots qui resonnent"( a nice pop song) and of course "j'attend l'amour"(her first single). In "star academy" Jennifer showed more vocal power than she shows on this album, but believe me, if you heard the rendition of "I will always love you" that she sang on the finale show, It's clear that this girl has everything to be the next french diva! remember her name because you will never forget her voice......

I thought the original Cd Was good, with Mega hit Au Soliel And Donnne-Moi le Temps Not a Bad song on the entire CD
But with the addition of he Des Mot Qui RESONNENT and Entre Humains This Cd reached Almost Ledgendary proportions
If you want Really excellent Music of every style Well written and The Best perfomence? By This CD whether you speak french or Not.Use Alta Vista for translation if you must

I bought this CD from amazon.uk, and was pretty dissapointed. The tracks were very similar; they were all rather boring ballads, or middle-of-the-road pop- Céline Dion style to be honest. If you are a Céline fan then you might like this- slow songs, with an under-produced, quiet sound. If however, you are more into Lorie or Alizée do not get this.

Too Good for US.......2002-10-01

A certain winner. Every track delicious. While travelling in France this summer we bought this CD on a whim (because our own Jenifer spells her name that way). It remains the single family favorite 2 months later. The music is both more complex and engaging than Britney or other popped-out, over-exposed teens. Her poetry is as strong as Avril and John Mayer, except, of course, en Francais.

Jenifer won the french version of "American Idol". her first album published in March was the second best sales after the one of Celine Dion. a really great sweetest voice and also a great person. if you have to buy a cd from France right now just buy this one you won't be disapointed : it really worth !!!!

From begining to the End a Wonderful and Extruodinary CD,( Musically)
Au Soleil shines and Donne-Moi Le Temps is wonderful as well
as is the Duet with Mario, although this CD needs NO support from any other singer
A Star has been born and ( In the name of Jenifer Bartoli). It is probably the best CD I have had the privalege of hearing in MAny a Year( And Its available from Amazon.com)
Internally the Words are given for each song to follow with
the Chanteuse as she Sings.
Extruodinary beautiful and well Mixed, Musically excellent.

If you haven t had the privalege of hearing Her Music I suggest

You like Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye? Get this right now, you won't be disappointed. It's Jenifer Jackson's third album and it's as good as the previous two, even her more upbeat and uplifting. This great singer has the knack for making feel good, each listen is pure happiness. If you have an ear for melodies, you'll find your paradise as well - I haven't heard such subtle tunes that much, along with other great talents like Ron Sexsmith and Joe Pisapia - they should be famous!
Get her other records as well, heaven knows they are worth the purchase!

Establishing her popularity as a pop recording artist.......2005-03-08

Jenifer won "Star Academy" 1st season in 2000. Unlike what a previous reviewer writes, this is not American Idol equivalent but rather the equivalent of Operacio Triunfo (Spain) and Fame Academy (UK). French Idol is called "Nouvelle Star", winners of season 1 and 2 are Jonatan Cerrada and Steeve Estatof (season 3 just began while Star Academy 4 ended in December).

Her first album "Jenifer" was a huge success and she is very popular among young listeners (she won best female NRJ award this year). After touring with her other SA1 mates, then touring in solo to promote her first album, taking part in various charity concerts, she met her current life companion Maxim Nucci (writer and producer for L5, Popstars 1 winners)who worked with her on this sophomore opus. She just took a couple of month after the birth of their baby boy Aaron before releasing "le passage" and start a new tour... All that at just 20.
I must say this is not my favourite French artist. But her songs are ofter catchy, pop with lots of guitars (more than on the first album). "Ma Révolution" (catchy rock track) and "Souvenir de ce jour" (mid-tempo track written by Kyo) have been successful singles and "C'est de l'or" (a ballad about her baby written by Calogero) has just been released.

Her first album was often soft and poppy, as her first singles "J'attends l'amour" or "Au soleil". She is going towards a 'pop with guitars'sound that was announced on the first album with "Des mots qui resonnent". If you like the current singles, you will probably enjoy the rest of the album. She describes "Le passage" as an explanation of how it feels to slowly grow from a 'sweet baby face' teenage girl into an intelligent artist in control of her career, a beautiful woman and a loving mother. The fact is, she has grown up since her departure from the academy, and she only own to her hard work and persistance to be recognized now as a respected recording artist and not anymore as a 'real TV kleenex product'. Conclusion: if you're looking for well produced mainstream pop, you might have found it.

Note that Kyo and Tina Arena do not actually sing on the record. Kyo wrote her "Souvenir de ce jour" and "Pour toi" is a french adaptation of a Tina Arena track... So much for their participation...

cool sophomore album.......2004-10-10

Jenifer won in the French American Idol spinoff and she has an incredible voice and it is evident in her albums. This second one has some nice songs like "Le souvenir de ce jour" and "Comme un yoyo," and most if not all of the songs are pop enough for one to get used to. Unfortunately, she still sounds like she's aiming for a mainstream audience. This album features Kyo and Tina Arena, supposedly, but I've had the album for several months (bought it in France) and I can't point out which songs those artists appear in. I still prefer her debut album over this one, ("Jenifer") but over-all, not a bad buy.

Jenifer McKitrick is my HERO.......2001-11-10

She has the killer voice that reminds me of a mixture of Chrissie Hynde, Stevie Nicks and Blondie. And you can tell that Sheryl Crow got her moves from McKitrick, who has been doing this since the early 80's. Her music just keep getting better and better, although I did love her back in the time of punk rock in her band the Bettys, and I liked Swinging Doors too. But solo is where Jenifer belongs, in the spotlight where she proves that she is as good as anybody around, and better in most cases. My favorite songs are So Far Gone, Bottomless Cup and Come on Now. And I can't wait for her next record to come out. Her records are almost as good as her live show, which ROCKS.

...I keep listening to this thing, I gotta say it grows on me and it feels like i havd been listening to it since high school. The songs are killer, my personal favorites are So Far Gone ( i got that one on the amazon free download) and then I bought the cd and I love the song Jaco, it was a way different version than the one on her other cd with the Swinging doors. This is way more like stones, tom petty, maybe a slight twang hear and there but way more rock and less country than the other one. I've been following Jen's career since the Betty's and she just keeps getting better. This is going to be one of my top 25 for life for sure. ROCK ON.

This music is where it's at, where it was, and where it will be.
If you like Stones, Mott the Hoople, Pretenders, you will love this CD.
