5 out of 5 stars Juliette Kang.......2006-03-23

I bought this CD because I heard Affairs of the Heart on Radio Two, CBC, Here's to You show, and every few minutes found myself exclaiming over Kang's magnificent performance. A treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Mahler meets Glass--and so much more.......2003-05-26

After hearing Passion of Angels on public radio, I ordered this cd and have lived with it over the last six months, a mainstay in my travels. New things keep revealing themselves to me in the tonalities which intially I classified simply as contemporary versions of High Romanticism. Some of the repetitions, too, I lumped at first in with post-modern Baroque minimalism. But these classifications, while handy, and while they may explain some of the residual styles informing the pieces on display here, do not do justice to the whole. Mozetich has accomplished something new from the remains of the tradition--and it is a legacy worth preserving. I have liked this cd so much I have given it as a gift. Mozetich has left us a gift indeed.

4 out of 5 stars Schmaltz that works.......2003-03-24

You have to give Mozetich credit for writing such anabashedly Romantic works as he entered the 21st century. The album's liner notes detail his struggle to pursue this path. Decades ago, professional critics and musicologists would have railed against these regressive works. Now, I think they've just thrown up their hands and joined the classical public in luxuriating in the saccharine nature of these works. The "Postcards" and "Passion" have received lots of airplay on Canada's CBC2 radio network. That's how I heard them. Initially, I regarded them as pleasant, contemplative ear candy. But then, something happened. A sweet young woman I knew died suddenly. At once, the "Postcards" and "Passion" took on a whole new meaning for me. I realized that they reflected her nature perfectly. Those works were a great consolation to me through my mourning period. Even Mozetich's shameless use of the main theme from Tchaikovsky's "Pathetique" symphony in the "Passion" works. The "Affairs" concerto flirts dangerously with the sterile, mechanical style of John Adams in its orchestral accompaniment, but Mozetich's lush Romantic harmonies and melodies still manage to triumph. Like me, you may think you've become too jaded and post-modern to enjoy such sugary music. But let down your guard for a few minutes and come with me to wallow in this near sublime Romanticism. I did it; you can too.

5 out of 5 stars This may be the best CD in my 500+ classical collection.......2003-02-28

I'd like to meet Marjan Mozetich.

I bought this CD for "The Passion of Angles" that I heard on PBS a few months ago. But before I could get to my "passion", which was the 5th cut, I started at the begining........to my wonderous ears appeared "Affairs of the Heart" that I have grown to love with as much or possibly even more passion.

Now understand that I am a classical freak. Example, I currently have 21 CD's of just 3 works. I love anything from Beethoven on to Rachmaninov, not much outside this, although I am always looking for the next "classical" contemporary composer.

By "classical" I mean if it doesn't have a melody, count me out. It has to have a melody.

Mozetich is my man. These two pieces are understated works of art. They have beautiful, simply stated melodies....they are not over orchestrated, and the combination of harp and violin in these concertos is just plain breathtaking.

...Unhesitatingly, and without conditions, this is one of the best composed, played and recorded pieces that has come down the pike since Rachmaninov's piano concertos.

It would have been interesting if Marjan would have put a second movement in the middle of these two pieces and called the whole work something like "The Affairs of the Angles". Bravo Mr. Mozetich...I would like to meet you.

Maybe you can get Ken Schermerhorn and the Nashville Symphony to play these works.

5 out of 5 stars Great mix of songs and laughs............2005-12-17

Can't think of another Canadian(besides Joni Mitchell & Neil Young)with as much talent as this excellent singer/songwriter/
comedian. Blessed with such a strong voice that bends with her
moody songs and soars and bleeds, no small feat. Jann Arden
songs have been in and out of my cd players for years, she rarely ever dissapoints, and on this live outing she is spectacular in the way she mixes the laughs through some very
funny strange tales and the way she connects with the crowds
and then the delivery of these classy songs. Jann really needs
to work her magic here in the states, its not surprising to
me she had been working for years with some of those folks
that made Bonnie Raitts recordings so special all during the
90's(Ed Cherney). Sure Jann Arden works that melancholy side
but I really don't know of any performer that is so gifted at
doing it this way, she writes such beautiful, sad songs about
life and relationships but she can rock when she wants, and talk and tell some really funny stories. Shes doing a better
job of mixing her styles on the lastest(2005) release, I look
forward to seeing her live one day.
This is a fine collection, don't miss it.

5 out of 5 stars Great songs & stories.......2003-01-17

I love this CD. I've never been to one of Jann's concerts, so this gives a good idea of what they're like. The songs sound fantastic with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and her stories that she tells before some of the songs are so funny. I also love the interaction with the players in the symphony. I do wish the sound when she's speaking was at the same volume as the sound when she's singing, but I've noticed that on many live albums so I wasn't surprised that I had to turn up the volume during the speaking segments.
Overall, a lot of fun.

If you like Jann Arden, you'll also like Dar Williams.

3 out of 5 stars Rocky start, smooth finish.......2003-01-07

I saw this concert in Windsor, Ontario, and Jann had the same sound problems with the opening song that night, as she does on this live recording from Vancouver. The mix is way off in spots, and the vocals are all but lost just pass the three minute mark. Why this wasn't corrected in post-production is even more troublesome. Jann is much better than this recording, and buyers deserve better quality for the hefty $[money] pricetag. Fortunately things get much better quickly, and the rest of the release is very good. Great entertainment for fans and newcomers.

5 out of 5 stars Jann Arden--best performer EVER.......2002-11-17

Okay, I'm kind of cheating here...I don't have this CD but I saw one of her shows in Winnipeg with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra...and it is simply the best concert I have ever attended. Jann's music is beautiful...she's the 'Queen of Broken-hearted Love Songs' and she simply creates beautiful music. Now add some excellent arrangements on a part of the orchestra, and you've got a magical atmosphere to many of her songs. While there are times that the part of her regular band that's present drowns out the symphony, all songs are beautiful. 'I Would Die for You' was my favorite with the strings, but so many of them are good. The only problem is that this CD is really a repackaged greatist Hits CD...not containing some of the non-singles that she performed, like Time for Mercy...and I said I liked I Would Die for You was my favorite, I must correct myself...this version of 'Hangin' By a Thread' was amazing, creating a lifetime of love for that song. Even 'Thing For You' isn't included.

But enough about her music, Jann Arden creates such great performances because of her humour, and wit and...everything...The way she relentlessly tells stories and makes jokes about her parents, and how she plays off what the crowd does...Jann Arden will make you laugh, no doubt about it and it will not detract from the music at all. If you ever have the chance to see her live...DO IT. It is the least regrettable thing you can do.

I knew from the instant the opening of 'Thing For You' began that a CD from this symphony tour she was on would be created in Heaven. There's no doubt that Jann Arden is one of the best singers in the world. Check this CD out, and you'll find that she's probably the best performer in teh world too.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular.......2002-11-14

This is, strangely, Jann Arden's most thrilling album, strange because it is so divorced from what she has done otherwise in her remarkable body of work. To thunderous accompaniments which surge and ebb like a sonic ocean, she magnificently samples her large repertoire mesmerizingly. Then, between songs, she offers a bawdy, naughty series of stories and comments which prove Canadians are not as reserved, proper and controlled as reputation might have, judging by the hysterical laughter from the audience (and orchestra). A mystical, magical singer and songwriter, Arden lays claim to true greatness here. Don't miss it!

5 out of 5 stars A Rising Violin Star Plays Three 20th-Century Romantic Violin Concerti Gorgeously.......2006-12-07

This disc featuring Manitoba-born violinist James Ehnes (pronounced 'Ennis') confirms for me my suspicion that he is one of the best of the younger generation of violin soloists on the concert circuit. I had heard and greatly admired his earlier recordings of Bach's Unaccompanied Violin Partitas and of Mozart's five Violin Concerti, but this is the first I've heard him play anything from the Romantic violin concerto literature. And although these three concertos -- those by Korngold, Barber, and Walton -- are from the twentieth century they are quintessentially Romantic in thrust.

Korngold's luscious concerto, written in a style I've always thought of as '1940s Hollywood chromatic' (think of Raksin's 'Laura' or Korngold's own film scores) was premiered by Heifetz in 1947 (recorded by him in a best-selling recording of the period) and incorporates themes from several of Korngold's film scores (e.g., Another Dawn, Juarez, Anthony Adverse and The Prince and the Pauper). Ehnes's tone is perhaps less cholesterol-rich than some but he plays this crowd-pleasing work with conviction and brilliance, using robust or delicate tone where called for. He is particularly effective in the songful middle movement and in the set of variations that make up the finale.

The story is well known of how Barber was commissioned to write his violin concerto for the protégé of a rich industrialist only to have the young violinist refuse to play it because the finale was technically too difficult. The first two movements brim with ultra-lyrical themes that are underscored by plush orchestral accompaniment that place the soloist directly in the spotlight. The finale -- presto in moto perpetuo -- is a knuckle-busting showpiece. All three movements are given sensational performances by Ehnes.

William Walton's Violin Concerto has been given marvelous recordings by Kyung-Wha Chung, Lydia Mordkevitch and, best of all, by Nigel Kennedy, the latter with the spectacularly effective orchestral accompaniment by the Royal Philharmonic conducted in nonpareil fashion by André Previn. Tough competition. But Ehnes, accompanied here as in all three concerti by the superb Vancouver Symphony under Bramwell Tovey, is definitely in the same league as the others. The Walton is not, in its first two movements, as technically demanding as the Korngold or Barber, but it may be the most emotionally complex of the three; it does not do well in the hands of young and emotionally inexperienced violinists. One need have no fear of a deficit in that regard by Ehnes. This is a superb rendition that eschews flash for emotional radiance. The Walton's finale -- presto capriccioso alla napolitana -- is fiercely difficult, however, written as it was for Heifetz who had asked for something demanding; it is a tarantella with a slew of off-accents, awkwardly placed (but breathtaking) double-stops and superhumanly complicated bowing. Ehnes manages all this with aplomb.

This disc is quite frankly a must-have for lovers of these three concerti. I for one will be eager to hear anything Mr Ehnes chooses to record and will certainly be on the look-out for Ehnes performances anywhere near my neck of the woods.

Strong recommendation.

Scott Morrison

5 out of 5 stars Just Heard The Korngold Live.......2006-11-28

I have this on order as of today, but since there are no reviews, I thought I'd report my thoughts on James Ehnes's playing of the Korngold at the November 26, 2006, Houston Symphony concert -- it was absolutely fantastic!

Hilary Hahn was originally scheduled to play, but could not due to an illness. Ehnes was asked to fill in on Monday. While I'm a fan of Ms. Hahn, I think she would be hard pressed to play the Korngold any better than James Ehnes. How can you surpass perfection? -smile-

As for the Korngold, I had not heard it in thirty years. In hindsight, I greatly regret this. It is a magnificent work. At the end of the first movement, the word "WOW" kept going through my head. I found the second movement so emotionally moving, I had to bite my lip to keep from falling apart and disturbing the audience. A plus was the sound of James Ehnes's Stradivarius (on loan), which was so beautiful, especially in the upper ranges of the instrument.

This was a truly remarkable performance, by a truly remarkable talent. I think we will be seeing much more from this relatively young Canadian violinist in the future. I heard Perlman, Zukermann, and Yo-Yo Ma early in their careers. It would not surprise me in the least if Ehnes eventually reaches their ranks in terms of popularity. His playing very well may already be there. We will see.

After I receive the CD and have listened to it, I will edit this review. I have also ordered Shaham to compare.

As an aside, I remain delighted by the exceptionally high, world class level of playing by Houston Symphony. At this time, I can't think of a single orchestra that I would prefer to hear over this one. Eschenbach mined the diamonds, and Graf has cut and polished them to perfection.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Performance by triple Maestros.......2004-08-26

I purchased this CD via Amazon couple of months back and I listened to it so many numbers of times. It is just excellent. I never heard of raga Jayjayanti played so beautifully before. Some people may like to compare it the same raga performed by late Ustad Fayyaz Khan. It is equally enjoyable to both new and veteran Indian (northern) classical music listeners.

This CD has just only one raga (...) in great details in all parts like "alap", "jhor", "jhala", "madha-laya", and "drut". All three maestros have showed their awesome ability to play and create a magical melody before a charming crowd in Vancouver, Canada. Among three of them I liked Pandit Harprad Chaurasia (flute) the most. Through out the performance he dominated over the vocal performance by Pandit Jasraj. Chaurasia has shown a brilliant mix of melody and creativity. Jasraj was really good but some time lacking his ability by trying to imitate flute performance. But it was a heck of a performance by the dual with as expected tabla accompaniment by Ustad Zakir Hussain. His tabla was soft and bold with rich mix of melody and creativity.

A private label called Eternal Music published this CD. Never heard of them before but the quality of audio is very good especially if you listened it in a high-end system without any digital tweaking. The CD contains the original recording without any digital filtering or enhancements.

I will recommend this CD to every music lovers.

4 out of 5 stars Good combination of rarely coupled repertoire.......2006-10-04

I was torn between giving this little CD 3 or 4 stars until I heard the collaboration of soloist Juliette Kang and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra under Sergiu Commissiona revel in the closing pages of Wieniawski's D Minor Concerto and its gypsy themes. There, the emotion of the collaborators aligned with the music to convince me this is clearly an above average collection for lovers of violin music.

This CD is marketed by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and must have been meant for circulation in North America, given that its notes are printed only in French and English, the two langauges of Canada. Kang is a Canadian as is -- obviously! -- the Vancouver (British Columbia) Symphony Orchestra.

I'd never seen these two concerti paired before, either on LP or CD. This version of the Schumann concerto is a big step up from the last one I owned, by Bell and the Cleveland Orchestra under Ashkenazy. Compared to the routine run through the more famous soloist gave the music, Kang is leisurely, broadly paced and -- in the first movement -- verges on a Kennedy-like languor that leaves the score dripping with tenderness.

The pairing of soloist and conductor is more electrically charged in the Wieniawski Concerto No. 2, where there is more than incremental delicacy in the delightful second movement romance & andante, followed by the full blown Slavic flavor of the closing allegro's virtuosic gypsy dance.

Wang plays 1730 & 1740 violins in this performance which includes Wieniawski's Legend in G Minor, an 8 1/2 minute piece of virtuosity and romance. Wang is as clever and individual here as in the Schumann and is equally as successful as before.

This, then, presents a mating of romantic concertos you probably don't have together in your collection. The recording has value in its program and in the discovery (for most people) of the Canadian soloist, who is a talented player with a strong technique and certain ideas about the music she plays. She is well-recorded and placed a bit forward from the orchestra, whose playing is good but not always clearly defined.

Whether the Schumann will stand up to the legendary account by Szeryng, or whether the Wieniawski can compete against your favorite performer, are questions only repeated listening can answer. For me, this recording has a strong beginning in that direction.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars For the Lizst lover.......2001-04-14

This recording has a wonderful selection of music by Franz Lizst with perhaps the most important stand-out being the 3rd Piano Concerto which was discovered after Liszt's death and has only been available in recordings for the past decade. Jerome Lowenthal premiered this concerto with the NY Philharmonic in 1990 (I was at the concert!)and he provides a masterful and haunting interpretation of Liszt's music. A really special cd for those who love Lizst.
