3 out of 5 stars Not the best Tsapiky, but the only album available!.......2004-08-09

I'm just glad this album was made. Anytime a musical genre unknown outside its country of origin gets the chance to be released abroad, I'm happy. But as anyone who's lived in Madagascar would agree, Tsapiky gets a lot better than this. I had the distinct impression listening to this album that the groups were chosen by virtue of their exceptionality, not their conformity, to the sound of Tsapiky. Admittedly, the standard synthesizer/guitar/rhythm section blend may have less of a chance appealing to Western ears, but that's the Tsapiky that's selling records all across Madagascar. The songs on this album sound more like novelty pieces collected as souvenirs on one man's trip through the countryside. And there are some gems on here, but most of the songs reflect the trance origins of the genre, continuing on repetitively for as long as eight minutes. Radio tsapiky maxes out at around three. :) But, as I said, it's the only Tsapiky album out there right now and it does give you an idea of what the genre is like. It's still high-energy dance music, and it's still cheerful and fun, and definitely worth a listen.
