Many world music fans will recall Issa Bagayogo's Timbuktu, the Malian artist's stateside debut. However, Bagayogo first struck gold on Sya, originally released in 1998 to great acclaim in Europe and Mali. It's on Sya that Bagayogo, guitarist Moussa Kone, and programmer Yves Wernert first infused traditional Malian music with electronic beats and other technological production techniques. Creating a more unobtrusive backing than would be heard on Timbuktu, Wernert's programming on Sya not only updated the traditional music, but did so without overshadowing the hypnotic and subtle acoustic strings and percussion. Listeners can hear the timbre of Bagayogo's remarkably expressive kamele n'goni (a small, six-stringed, lute-like instrument) playing as he transitions from low, earthy, fuzzy notes to high clear notes that have the delicacy of acoustic guitar. Perhaps it was the initial rush of this first collaboration that made it so good, but Sya is an even more compelling, and more subtle, listen than the still very fine Timbuktu. --Tad Hendrickson

5 out of 5 stars Excellent synthesis of Malian music and French technology.......2007-07-06

Extraordinary how well Issa Bagayogo and Yves Wernert work together to meld Malian Wasulu and uptown studio audio manipulation. The latter seems to conform to the sensibilities of the former such that, unless one is attending to production methods rather than sailing along in billowing clouds of sound, the sonic universe is seamless. This team deserves broader acclaim!

5 out of 5 stars Still his best.......2007-05-16

Sya remains a magical listening experience for me, even five years (and several purchases of it for friends and children) later. Its spare fusion of hip-hop with traditional Malian song structures means the listener really can hear everything; neither tradition overwhelms the other but you get the feeling that these musics have more in common than you might initially think. Even better: it's danceable without resorting to thump-thumpiness, as Bagayogo's lute's percussive qualities are easily audible and so add to the record's rhythmic complexity and sonic textures--one of those textures being space. There's enormous room in this album, which allows instruments and vocalists room for us to hear them--something that can't be said about the other albums.

I also own Timbuktu and Tassoumakan (in fact, I'm listening to Timbuktu as I write this review), but it's Sya that I take with me on road-trips. Even as the car takes me where I need to go, this marvelous album takes my mind to still another place.

4 out of 5 stars Trance in Bamako.......2007-04-27

Issa Bagayogo has gone from being a divorced bus driver in Bamako to a musical sensation. Considering his skills as a musician, wondrously wielding the kamele n'goni (hunter's harp) and his smoky voice, it's hard to imagine him driving people to their destinations in the Mali's capital city.

The opening title track of "Sya" opens with natural sounds, flowing water, birdsong. It's not the usual "New Age with natural sounds" however. It has a beat."Diarabi" has a haunting, mysterious sound. While the songs sometimes get repetitive, the entire album is a natural mix of traditional Malian music with technology.

"Sya" is "Techno Issa"'s sterling sophomore follow-up.This album is a great introduction to African techno, and is perfectly combined with Putumayo's "African Groove" and Issa's third CD,"Tassoumakan" (Voice of Fire).

4 out of 5 stars Techno meets the Wasulu beat.......2003-03-13

"SYA" may be the first recording to pair the kamalengoni, the signature harp used in Malian Wasulu music, with electronic dance rhythms. It's a magical combination, and the trance-like repetitive riffs that characterize the Wasulu sound lend themselves well to techno stylings. Not bad, considering that it's coming from a guy who was driving a Bamako minibus when this album came out.

The title track has one of the best hooks you'll hear in recent Malian pop music--just four unforgettable beats. In a radical break from typical Malian pop, Bagayogo's French producer/arranger puts all kinds of ambient sounds (birds chirping, a woman sighing) in the mix. It's languid, lovely, and hard to get out of your head, which is a very good thing.

My only criticism of "SYA" is that it's just a little uneven. There are some memorable tracks like the title cut, and then there are others that are ho-hum. But overall I think this album merits a listen, whether you are an aficianado of Malian music or a techno-phile searching for new offshoots of the genre (and perhaps disappointed with Six Degrees' "Frikyiwa" discs). Wherever you are, Mr. Bagayogo, I hope you've quit your day job and moved into making this kind of music full-time.

5 out of 5 stars Eotvos has a real theatre timbral imagination,.......2000-03-20

I've come to prefer Opera less on Compact Disc, I keep being distracted imagining wha the sets and lighting would look like, and that effects my listening, or anyones. Since the visual code has replaced the verbal one , so the structuralist tell us, this makes the listening experience all that more shallow under the mileau of after-post modernity. Which is why composers turn more and more to what works for the least common denominator of theatre goers. And Eotvos has a real theatrical imagination, having worked with Wilson,Tati and Chereau, European drammatic gods, his music has always served the accessible without in any way being condescending ,one-dimensional or simple minded. A feature I had wished Someone would learn on this side of the Atlantic, with direct marriage to the market of Disney and hip fashion. The Chekhov story invests and depicts the three daughters of Colonel Prozorov and occurs, in the original over four acts, a period of four years. Eotvos brings a formidable orchestral technique in sound and structure here in what he calls 'sequences', dealing with the events in an elliptical way. In this way he did enrich the Chekhovian narrative with greater dimensions of content. Eotvos is purely fascinating, his music has tension always, it pours over the drammatic proceeedings with a highly charged yet immediate voice, as in the opening with a bare, exposed lines of the accordeon. The writing for voices is typical opera, very direct and tuneful. The orchestral pit is inhabited by a chamber orchestra, with a 50 piece orchestra behind the stage, front center. In this way Eotvos can play with simple yet effective melodic lines. History resonants here to the farewell reminded me of the farewell in Mozarts Cosi.. The sisters are portrayed by men, in counter tenor and alto roles. Much like pre-classic opera,Handel. It's beautiful stuff, clean ethereal, effeminate and transparent singing.Yet the simplified beauty is arresting yet Eotvos keeps again this pervasive tension in the forefront. Conductor Kent Nagano is part of the new opera European crowd, he has sailed many drammatic seas there.

5 out of 5 stars The modern Bolshoi.......2000-01-28

This recording illustrates the new period of the Bolshoi. The singers chosen represent the new and old stars of the Bolshoi opera. The veterans include Artur Eisen, and the modern stars include Vladimir Matorin (Rightly considered the best Ivan Susanin of the ninties), Tatyana Yerastova, Vitaliy Tarashenko, Larisa Rudakova (who sang the Majic Flute at the met), Pavel Chernykh, Vladimir Redkin and Maria Gavrilova. Feranec, who is now replaced by Mark Ermler as the cheif conductor of Bolshoi orchestra, seems to follow the orchestra trained by Ermler, Lazarev and Svetlanov, instead of leading it. The chorus is spectacular.

4 out of 5 stars A recording any fan of Russian music must have........1999-09-20

The only negative aspect of this recordind is the conducting of Peter Feranec. He is a fine professional conductor, but he is not able to present this very unique music. Now the soloists. We have some strong basses. V. Ognovenko is of course more of a bass-bariton, than a bass but he is a fine Boris Godunov. V. Matorin, on the other hand is a very good Ivan Susanin. He may sound more convincing in a theater (I heard him as Susanin in the Bolshoi on three ocasions), but just the richness of his voice is satisfacory. Baritones V. Redkin and P. Chernykh are both good artists, if not great vocalists. Sopranos L. Rudakova and M. Gavrilova (both international stars)show the wide vibrato, so charachteristic among russian vocalists. Mezzo T. Erastova (or more correctly Yerastova), also with a wide vibrato, uses her unique voice with skill. V. Tarastchenko is a good dramatic tenor, who is singing a wrong role.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A real piece of history from 1958 - mono but not dated.......1998-12-14

This box set earns its 5 stars on three counts. The first, the obvious one, that Boris Christoff (so closely identified with his namesake Godunov) is the perfect Mussorgsky bass. The second is that these songs are all excellent, not many 'complete' song collections can be so uniformly good. The third, and this is what makes it 5 stars not 4, is that EMI have really taken the libretto seriously - 144 pages with full cyrillic texts (not just roman alphabet transcriptions) plus translations in English, French and German. Timings: 57'14 66'51 67'57

4 out of 5 stars If only as a "fix" for those who've seen him live!.......2005-11-15

Amadou Kienou, in concert, is bar none the best performer I have ever witnessed. But then, maybe that's what makes his presence so special-- it's as if he's not performing at all, but radiating a personal raison d'etre. This CD purchase is to clear my cloudy days, and give the idealist in me a fresh shine. For those who have not had the privilege to see Kienou live, let the recording provide a mere glimpse (until he visits a neighborhood near you). For anyone who has heard this Djembe with their own ears, let SYA remind you that purity in music lives on!
