Album Description
TRANCE, whether you like your Trance melodic and uplifting, or hard and fast, Trance by any definition is here to stay. From the Warehouse Parties of the 90's to Television Commercials in 2007, Trance has become part of the new millennium, part of our lifestyle. And all because of DJs like George Acosta. George proves every time he puts a needle on a record that "Trance", whatever the label, has changed, evolved, become a lifestyle, a culture...as well it should. With over 15 years of experience as a DJ and producer, George has helped change and evolve Trance from an underground movement to massive festival experiences throughout the world. "George Acosta is probably America's most unique DJ and has undoubtedly been a major force in shaping the sound of trance in Miami and beyond" says fellow DJ Dave Ralph. George Acosta is America's representative in the global Trance scene.
George Acosta continues playing some of the biggest clubs and festivals in the world, Berlin's Love Parade, as well as Miami's Ultra Beach Festival and Space Night Club to name a few. And with demand for George reaching a fever pitch, he is producing his new Mix CD, "A State Of Mind" with top American Dance Music label Moist Music. This ambitious Double CD will represent his legendary all night sets, evoking the different emotions and textures of his sets, from epic, string-soothed splendor to searing tech-trance.
Customer Reviews:
Great CD.......2007-07-24
Great CD makes my driving a lot more fun, good beat and melody, i am glad i bought this
It's time for George to evolve.......2007-07-15
I used to love to go see George when I would go to Shadow Lounge and The Mix in Miami 1998 -2000 - every other weekend. But, come on!! PLEASE develop your sound man.. Every one of his CD releases sound almost exactly the same. And the CD I bought of his with the red fingernails all over the cover had some of the worst quality recording I've ever heard on any CD. Terrible digitization and way lousy sound quality (by the way it wasn't just my CD - I read a lot of reviews about the audio problems with that release)
I LOVE trance/Progressive House and I have a long-standing respect for George and his Miami roots, but its high-time that he brings us something new and fresh... and this album ISN'T it.
If you want fresh Trance check out Anjunabeats / Above and Beyond. They have 5 volumes of some incredible Trance.
A state of horridness.......2007-07-05
After reading the reviews of this little gem I decided to buy this from amazon marketplace for around 8 bucks. When I got it in the mail, I was overjoyed and began what I thought was going to set me into a different "State of Mind". Well, to say the least, a state of mind was greatly exaggerated. After getting into the 5th track both CDs began to get really boring. Why you ask? Track selection for one. The tracks in this two set were boring and non-cohesive, meaning they really didn't go well together. To make matters worse, all the tracks were over 6-7 minutes LONG! Thats right, its like you stick a bunch of singles on to a CD and play it through, which makes this 2cd set extremely boring and strained out. In restrospect, much of the other djs stick to 4-5 minute versions and mix pretty well. Not for Mr. Acosta, he plays the tracks practically til the end, then mixes without any melody. If I didn't know this was an album I thought it would have been a recorded mix at a live gig.
To make matters worse, the sound production on this CD is horrendous. I dj myself, and I know a thing or two about sound production. Throughout the entire CD the highs get shrilling HIGH when they are by themselves, but when the bass kicks in, the volume lowers and there is extreme cut-off at the mid-to-high frequency ranges, resulting in some noticeable bass distortion, because there wasn't any bass compression used. As a result, I had to lower the volumn just so I wouldn't get any amplifier cut off on top of the recording cut off distortion.
Recap:
Pros:
-It's george acosta
-The end of CD1 does get kind of good with some high-energy trance, uh, core.
Cons:
-Bass distortion at the recording level, nothing you can do about it.
-Tracks drag on too long, average at 7 minutes, but some as high as 8-9 minutes
-Tracks are played entirely through, from beginning to end, then mixed right at the end, no melody, no key mixing, just beat mixing.
-Track selection is boring on top of the already 8 minute tracks.
-Seems like he made this while doing a gig somewhere rather than spending time on it like AvB or Tiesto does.
If I had to pay more than 8 bucks for this, I probably wouldn't have bought it. Looking back, I think I made a big mistake.
Acosta use to be good, but i think he's falling off the edge, and isn't going with the trance flow. This most likely will be the last album I'll buy from him.
I give it 2 stars because the end of CD1 was kind of good.
Great Mix, but no Flawless.......2007-06-25
While I don't agree with the other reviewers, this is still certainly a must have. This can't come close to the amazing sounds of "Awake" or "Next Level", but it's still a solid offering. As is typically true, Acosta's original tracks are the worst on this mix. Disk one offers a fantastic first 30 minutes of bumping trance, but slows down towards the end. Disk two begins fantastically, slows in the middle, picks up again towards the end, but ultimately falls off with two of Acosta's own mediocre tracks. Still, this is a great buy for any trance fan.
Light, soft rhythms give way to dark, hard beats.......2007-06-19
This mix is, far and away, the BEST from George Acosta yet! Starting with Maor Levi's "Reflect" and ending with Mr. Acosta's own "War of Hearts", this set reels you in, and keeps you moving to the very last beat of the very last second.

Raul Midon's debut State of Mind is the sort of CD that makes R&B tastemakers twitch with pleasure. These 13 tracks are so supple, round and rich it's safe to say the blind, New Mexico-born, half-Argentinean R&B/jazz artist is a unique hybrid of Donny Hathaway and Stevie Wonder. There has been a lot of speculation as to whether his sightlessness has helped Midon arrive at his Wonder-esque soul and scary-real talent. Weigh in if you want, but don't expect to arrive at any satisfying conclusions. Midon, like Wonder, Hathaway, and Al Jarreau, is the rare artist so clearly delivered to this earth for the sole purpose of making beautiful music. Drawing from pop, reggae, jazz, Afro-Cuban, and flamenco wells, Midon twists together a wonderful genre grab-bag strong enough to rival Seal. Two highlights, on an album full of them, arrive on track seven "Expressions of Love," when Stevie Wonder steps in for a harmonica solo, and on "Keep on Hoping," where Midon duets with the talented folk/ blues artist Jason Mraz. -Tammy La Gorce
Customer Reviews:
Raul Understands.......2007-07-16
Just from the description given by [...],plus this man's appearance on Herbie Hancock's Possibilities, you probably already know that 'State Of Mind' is a very special album. Not only does it show that Raul Midon understands the same thing about music as John Legend,Van Hunt,Macy Gray and Liz Wright but that his influences from the vast musical past come together into his own unique style that no,doesn't try to sound too contemporary but instead forges ahead with new melodic and musical ideas. Raul is also a Flemenco trained guitarist whose influeces are as much from Jose Feleciano as Stevie Wonder, the artists I can best compare this music to.It has a soul the way both have but has Jose's flamenco style playing with a Wonder-like compositional style. Spanish styled music as been a part of R&B since the beginning;it came there through the earliest jazz and Jelly Roll Morton's "spanish tinge" in the early 1900's and Raul is putting that back into place. The man is an inredible singer as well-with an elastic range and sense of vocal expression that perfectly matches his emotional music. And the man impressess with one brilliant song after another;"If Your Gonna Leave","Keep On Hoping","Mystery Girl,"Waited All My Life","Suddenly","Never Get Enough" and "All In Your Mind"-all mellow melodies with some of the greatest compositions you'll find these days. And even on the uptempo music that effect doesn change on the brilliant "State Of Mind",the sassy tribute to Donny Hathaway "Sittin' In The Middle" and the mind blowing "Sunshine (I Can Fly)".There are also two duets here-the soulful "Keep On Hoping" with Jason Mraz, with a great vocal exchange between them and "Expressions Of Love" that features Stevie Wonder on harmonica but Raul's compositional style is so incredibly strong you'd think Stevie co-wrote it.With all of these songs Raul draws the listener directly into his music without ever resorting to gimmicks either lyrically or in the arrangement. One extremely impressive tune here is the jolting "I Would Do Anything"-with it's Afro Brazillian percussion and melding of melody and rhythm.I am looking forward with great anticipation to the release of Raul's second albumTBA forthcoming, and I hope this is a direction he will extend on because this man has serious talent. And by that I mean T-A-L-E-N-T!!!
Simply great!!.......2007-07-14
All the songs on this album are great. Raul Midon is a fantastic artist and his album is a straight classic!!! I recommend it to everybody who likes good acoustic music! It's one of my favourite albums ever!
One of the best albums of all time .......2007-05-18
I know people say this all the time but, this is truly one of the best albums of all time. If you are on the hunt for someting different because you are sick of todays R&B but still like the soul part of it, done right!!! this cd is for you. This cd has the kind of songs that after ten years, it will be just as good as it is now.
I have over 500 cds and I found that, if I am going for a long drive no more than five or ten of them I can take with me, this cd being one.
(One thing I found was that, the 30 second samples were enough time for me to decide I liked the songs, unlike most albums.)
Incredible.......2007-04-10
I became aware of Raul Midon when I saw him performing live on the Food Network's "Emeril Live." This CD is off the hook... whether you get hooked on the sweet melodies or the incredibly well written lyrics... the songs are tasteful and romantic. Midon is a genius.
Great!.......2007-03-14
Really a good CD. I didn't like quite as many songs as well as I thought I would, however, it gets 4 stars because Raul's voice is rich and wonderful and his music is well produced. The ones I didn't like were just a matter of taste, not lack of quality. The first few were some of my favorites. He is a very gifted singer and guitarist and I would certainly buy a project of his again!

Nanci Griffith's MCA debut made some minor concessions to commercial country radio, without sacrificing the integrity of quiet, utterly personal songs. The steel guitar of Lloyd Green and the big drum sound of Russ Kunkel are the most distinctive additions to her "folkabilly." But producer Tony Brown deserves credit for never trying to make Griffith something other than one of the finest songwriters of her generation. "Ford Econoline," her tribute to folk singer Rosalie Sorrels, shows Griffith's deep understanding of the singer/songwriter tradition, a knowledge that sets her apart from peers like Mary Chapin Carpenter and Kathy Mattea. --Roy Kasten
Customer Reviews:
Love in a Memory.......2007-03-22
While this isn't mature Nancy, I get plenty of enjoyment out of probably half the songs. I urge any fans of Flyer or "One Fair Summer Evening" to get a copy for the song "Love in a Memory" a little story song that hits with the weight of a Doestoevesky novel. The last verse will give you chills. ("His sons are young dreamers...")
The title song is a blast on the dance floor.
Another Great Album By Nanci.......2007-01-15
I Realy Like To Listen To This Lady, She Is Just Great....
The original version of From a distance.......2005-08-17
Bette Midler had the big international hit, Cliff Richard had a big UK hit and Kathy Mattea recorded a country version (albeit with bagpipes) but Nanci Griffith recorded the original version of From a distance. Although Nanci wrote much of her own material, this is one that she didn't write. Nevertheless, it gave Nanci a massive career boost and remains the song that she is best remembered for.
This was the first of four albums that Nanci recorded for MCA. Note that all four have been re-packaged as a double-CD in the UK although they vary in style so some people may still prefer to buy this as a separate CD. Besides From a distance, it also includes such great songs as Lone star state of mind, Cold hearts closed minds, Sing one for sister, Ford Econoline, Let it shine on me and There's a light beyond these woods, to name just a few.
Nanci had a style that began as folk-country but she also attracted some rock fans when she subsequently brought other influences into her music. If you enjoy listening to Nanci the folk-country singer, this is for you, together with her Philo / Rounder albums Once in a very blue moon and Last of the true believers. Her more recent music is also of a high quality but different.
A must for a Nanci Griffith fan!.......2001-03-22
This is by far one of my favorites of Nanci's work. I adore her voice and love the sweetness and feeling as she delivers.
Bravo Nanci!.......2000-02-19
I love Nanci Griffith very much and have all of her cds. My love affair with her music started off with Other Voices/Other Rooms, now I have just got to see her in concert. I didn't think you could scratch a CD until I bought this one, and I have not traded it in yet. Maybe if I bought some scratch remover, this would help. I taped this CD for the assistant principal at our High School. She loves the tape a lot because she drives a Ford Econoline, she even listens to it while driving in her Ford, Econoline.

Intriguing music, but the ideology needs progress.......2007-06-15
I'll get flamed for challenging the band's ideology, but let me explain. I appreciate CA's strong endorsement of indigenous tribal nationalism/traditionalism, but one ethic that guides individuals in pretty much ALL of our tribes is that regardless of our point of view, one does not ever devalue another's religious vision or "path." Therefore, I have to honestly question whether CA's pro-Indian agenda (which I like, and share), wouldn't be better served if they were better able to advocate for their tribal ways without simultaneously making vulgar and degrading statements about the spiritual systems of others (they manage to get in attacks on Chrisitians, Muslims, Hindus, etc., often with pointed vulgarity). While one could respond, "Well the Christians were that way to us [Indians]," that kind of retaliatory "they did it so we can do it back" echo-think does not exemplify Indian ethics; our way is to show humble respect for other spiritual or religious lives EVEN IF we do not share them, and perhaps don't even *like* them. I've heard plenty of Indians take shots at other faiths, but I've hever heard a single elder or spiritual leader do so--not one.
As a result, I find myself quite liking the politics and activist anthems in much of their music, although their very un-Indian manner of trash-talking other spiritual systems comes off more as an "Indian I.C.P." striving toward edgy social consiousness/controversy. I'm not asking them to self-censor or "fake" respect for something they cannot respect, but I am pointing out, gently but firmly, that it's not a traditional "tribal way" to speak profanity toward any other person's faith.
Having made that point, I'm quite intrigued by the band's social positions, and I can even forgive them for posing as Indian activists while mis-pronounching the name of the very person they uplift as an icon of their tribal ways ("Peltier" is not pronounced "PelTeeAy", and any Indian modestly connected to tribal communities would know it).
amazing............2007-05-05
this cd is just that, amazing. it makes you think about every topic-from religion to politics to history. religious people and conservatives will get offended, but i don't see why...they're only speaking the truth. having alot of mexican indian blood in me i totally understand their views. the only thing i regret is that i didn't find out about them years ago...
best cd I've heard in a long time.......2007-03-19
If you are a unitarian or openminded, then you might enjoy this cd. They are very truthful and talented in their lyrics. My gay 70 year old friend listened to it and loved it and wants his own copy now. glad I introduced it to him!
GOOD MUSIC BUT DESTRUCTIVE ANTI-AMERICAN PROPAGANDA.......2007-01-07
The album's got really catchy tunes, but if this anti-American bs propaganda keeps growing within our own country, we're going to loose the freedoms we have. This bs of showing support for revolution by wearing Che Guevarra is the exact same bs these guys are preaching against. Che and the Cuban government are up there with the absolute most oppressive regimes in existence. Go ahead and research how "freedom" or freedom of speech is doing in Cuba these days. Oh yeah, "real freedom by way of revolution", that's the ticket.
Be careful what you fight for, you just might get it.
God Bless the US and the rights it affords us. You don't know what you got till it's gone.
Peace,
jv
This CD STRIKES BACK at the unseen wickedness of Religion and Cultism.......2006-05-25
This is not a Group for mom and dad to hear, especially not grandparents. This cd is HIGHLy Offensive to Religious people. However don't get these guys wrong. They are not here to sell out like one guy posted. You can't become famous with these songs. But damn, as messed up as the titles sound, these songs really make a lot of sense. If you play them loud, oh you are going to raise eyebrows and attract a lot of ATTENTION! However, if you listen to the words, you can understand where these guys come from. A lot of the songs are about how America was stolen from the Native American Indians and Indians were brutally killed for not bowing down to forced religions and slavery. Andrew Jackson killed Indians, now why is he on a 20 Dollar Bill? In their song, they say what would the Jews feel like if Hitler was on the 20 dollar bill, because Native Americans see a monster with Andrew Jackson on it. Even being white, I can understand why that makes sense. WHo wants a murderer on their money?
But these guys attack religion tactfully in my opinion. It's not just to irritate and make people upset. So sorry satan worshippers, these guy aren't like that. They do not attack religion with hate, yet with concern and love for the better of mankind.
This site does not have it, but I HIGHLY RECOMMEND their Last cd "BORN AGAIN." Only sold on MERCH.COM IT is completely Heavy Metal this time. No RAP/ROCK. They totally ROCK. THey sound like a Godsmack/Slayer/System of a Down -It IS REALLY GOOD! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!

Album Description
Straight out of the multicultural melting pot that is Amsterdam, two hip-hop prodigies have come together to create this soulful, ambitious, thought provoking album. Hip-hop, soul, 60's psychedelia, and even classical music gently collide and collaborate in a breathtaking way. "Perquisite" drops his groovy beats with one hand and plays cello with the other, in combination with MC/vocalist Pete Philly's charmingly honest tales, creating a concept album bursting with passion. Each song represents a different state of mind focusing on particular moods or emotions, like laziness, gratitude, hope, and motivation.

Pete Philly and Perquisite, What Is It?.......2007-02-03
Ladies and gentlemen, what we have here is incredibly good and orignal hip hop. This album is a breath of fresh air when comparing it to 99% of other hip hop music today. The beats are layed back and laced with jazzy overtones, and the flows are melodic and inspired. Harmonies and real instruments are laced throughout the entire album, making the end result incredibly entertaining, for fans of music in general, not just hip hop. Don't get me wrong, this album is by no means soft. The flow on this album is very layed back, but by no means does it ever slow down, or conform to stereotypical sounds. The end result, in my opinion, is a masterpiece.
Sadly, this album is a needle in a haystack. Most fans of real hip hop will never find it, but if you are reading this review right now, consider yourself lucky to have stumbled upon it. Get this album right now, and when you are bobbing your head up and down, letting PetePhillys flow melt your skull, and Perquisite's beats tingle your spine, you will be "grateful".
The cream of the crop (Top 5):
1. Mindstate (Probably one of my all time favorite hip hop songs)
2. Eager
3. Paranoid
4. Lazy
5. Hope (feat. Talib Kweli)
Smooth fusion of jazz, rap & soul is refreshing.......2006-07-27
This 17-song debut album is an excellent fusion of multiple genres and influences that comes together in a seamless and thoroughly enjoyable release. It's sexy, thought-provoking, booty-shakin' and melodically stirring all at the same time. When I first heard it, I thought about the Digable Planet's first album, "Bugpowder Dust" from Bomb the Bass and the Miles Davis', Doo-Bop. All of which combined jazz and hiphop, but I think Mindstate does a far better job of the fusion. It could draw jazz fans towards hiphop and vica versa.
Each song explores different states of mind such as "Grateful", "Motivated", "Paranoid", and "Lazy". In addition, each song has a different beat and structure that keeps the album refreshing. "Cocksure" is about being confident and self-assured and has an assertive beat that sounds like new Jamaican dancehall. "Amazed" has an excellent melodic brake with strings, bongos and guitar. "Relieved" harkens back to 90s acid jazz, while "Conflicted" pairs rapid-fire rapping with jazz-style piano comping. "Eager" is infinitely sexy and a bit naughty. The real standout on the album is "Insomnia" which has an infectious, laid-back beat and really utilizes Pete Philly's unique voice and phraseology. Throughout the CD, Pete Philly isn't afraid to depart from the typical MC role to actually sing, which adds to the variety of the album. The entire album is in my iTunes and I am eager to see their live show if it comes to the US as I've heard it is equally impressive. If you're even remotely curious, sample some of the songs and prepare to be convinced. [from my review for Scoot! Magazine]
So silky smooth.......2006-05-31
pete philly and co. drop some of the jazziest, most laid-back albums since the days of de la soul and tribe called quest. This album is so refreshing to listen to, and you can always find something to fit your mood, even if you have multiple personality disorder. Pete philly gets busy on a number of classical, jazz, and funky melodies, but all of the beats pack a little sizzle and will make you want to dance by yourself. Talib Kweli guest stars to make one of the most original and relaxing hip hop albums in a decade. Be the first on your block to know about Pete.

Fabulous! Back to his old form!.......2006-10-22
The song "An Eye for an Eye" written by Bush is worth the cost of the album. Bush is the greatest. I think he would be bigger than Wllie Nelson if he hadn't developed spasm dystonia in the middle of his career. Here he is backto his old form, you hear the great country caruso again!
More great Johnny Bush.......2006-10-12
Johnny Bush keeps putting out real Texas country music that is unsurpassed. This CD features Johnny's stellar voice and good old country themes. No one can sing country/honky tonk like Johnny Bush.

Tenor saxophonist Dave Ellis, who cut his teeth as a sideman with Bob Weir, Bruce Hornsby, and Charlie Hunter, is the latest horn phenom to emerge from the Bay Area. He went to the same high school that produced Joshua Redman and Craig Handy and his sound and ideas combine the best of Hank Mobley, Dexter Gordon, and John Coltrane. This date, produced by Orrin Keepnews, features a combo with pianist Mulgrew Miller and bassist Christian McBride. It's a straight-ahead session, with Ellis putting his weighty, tenor sax two-cents on his own compositions and several jazz standards. He remains faithful to the dancing Afro-Caribbean beat of Charlie Parker's classic "Barbados," stokes the aching, aqua-toned embers on the Ellington/Strayhorn ballad, "Something to Live For," and he retains Coltrane's "Giant Steps" approach to Gershwin's "Summertime." Speaking of Coltrane, special guest alto saxophonist Vincent Herring guest stars on three tracks, including the post-bop burner "Grand Central," which Trane and Cannonball Adderley recorded together. All in all, no heavy concepts here, just some good, old-fashioned swinging, which, these days, is hard to come by --Eugene Holley, Jr.
Customer Reviews:
Dave Ellis is just warming up.......2007-07-03
State of Mind is a wonderful jazz CD. Dave Ellis is just warming up and his all time best is yet to come, but this has to be his all time best to date. A former Sax player in Bob Weir's RATDOG he is a seasoned professional who has been there and done that. He is a true Sax genius with over tones of a young John Coltrane and Stan Getz combined. His strong rock and roll background gives him that extra drive that you hear and feel in his great playing - it comes off the ground at times. Highly recommended... especially if you are a true jazz lover...
Stellar as usual.......2003-08-20
Like one of the prior reviewers, I have been following Ellis' career since his days with The Charlie Hunter Trio and Charlie Hunter Quartet. Unlike that same reviewer, I think that this change of pace album is a classic. As with his first two solo releases "Raven" and "In The Long Run", Ellis puts his own signature sound to some jazz classics as well as his originals and gives a fresh approach to the tenor sax on each. Ellis blends his own style with that of Joe Henderson, John Coltrane, Mike Brecker and Wayne Shorter. He can "squonk" the lower register with the best of them and play fluidly and melodically just as easily. Joining Ellis on this recording is legendary pianist Mulgrew Miller, "Bassenstein" himself Christian McBride, and the always stellar Lewis Nash on drums, just to name a few. I think what makes Ellis a true American original is his ever changing style on each album. From his stint with Hunter to his solo releases, Ellis is never boring and always puts a fresh spin on an old classic making us believe that it is indeed his own. Keep up the great work Dave, I look forward to your next release.
You'd better have a strong, original voice . . ........2003-08-19
. . . if as leader you select Mulgrew Miller for the piano chair.
Case in point: Dave Ellis, tenor sax player in the Charlie Hunter Band, and his new disc, State of Mind. Miller literally takes over the proceedings and leaves Ellis in the dust. Check out Miller's solo on his brilliant composition, "Soul-Leo," where he rips off stunning and imaginative runs as if they were the merest trifles, while the leader struggles to come up with something, anything significant to say.
Never less than competent, Ellis has yet to find a distinctive voice on tenor sax. Actually, he's pretty convincing on the ballads--a good sign for future development--but seems somewhat lost on the more uptempo numbers.
Yet time and again things really only come alive when Miller is front and center. With literally hundreds of recording dates under his belt, it's no wonder: he's paid his dues, struggled to find his voice, and it gloriously shines forth here. In fact, if one were to regard this as Miller's recording, it would be hard to deny it five stars.
But it's not. However, if you're on to Miller, you will definitely want to add this disc to your collection; it really is one of his finest efforts. Throw in two towering rhythm sections--Peter Washington (bass) and Carl Alan (drums) or Christian McBride (bass) and Louis Nash (drums)--and you have some awesome possibilities for great music, which, it must be said, is regularly delivered. And I don't want to portray Ellis as a stiff; actually, he's developing quite nicely from his Charlie Hunter days and his previous two solo outings.
It's just that he's chosen to put himself in some very rarified settings. That he doesn't always fully rise to the occasion doesn't diminish the quality of the proceedings; it just means that he's not the leader he might one day become. In the meantime, he's made some very creditable music on this disc, brought most fully to life by his choice of top drawer bandmates.
4 and 1/2 stars.
kind of disappointed.......2003-07-23
I really was hoping for better from him. I remember Dave from Charlie Hunter's band at the Elbo Room and always gave him the benefit of the doubt that it was Charlie's material that made him sound like just an o.k. jazz player. He doesn't sound very original and there are a lot of tenor players out there doing a better job of playing other people's licks than he is - he should stick to the pop music...
Got to have it!.......2003-06-24
Fabulous record!!!!!! Would recommend it to all!

Awesome.......2006-11-30
If you like this one there's no question you'll love Gashed Senses & Crossfire too. FLA has had so many styles and influences over the years that you can literally like 2 or 3 of their cd's and loathe the rest of them. Well this is one of the 3 for me that I consider true FLA. I listed GS&F above and the other one is The Initial Command. Enjoy
State of Mind > .......2005-07-16
This is FLA's second album and just like early Delerium, early FLA was much better than the FLA now. This is possibly due to the style of instruments back in the early 1990's but the primitive industrial beats sound good and are not disruptive to listen to like later FLA albums were. I was impressed with the quality of music on show here, the songs flowed smoothely and did not carry on for 7-10 minutes like most FLA songs do these days. The synths mixed well with the industrial aspects of the song and moments of dark gothica fusion melded well with the overall dynamics of the songs. There is also a 'Delerium' influence within a few of these songs most noticably in 'Eastern Voices', 'Landslide' & 'Consequence'.
This CD will be played regularly by me as it is a 1 hour escape into the pleasures and fundaments of musical nirvana.
State of Mind ~ Front Line Assembly.......2005-04-16
State of mind is an example of the earliest recordings by FLA and yes it does sound quite primitive compared to the later releases such as TNI and Implode. Then one has to remember that Leeb was working with primitive synths, samplers, and one should therefore not demand that it will sound like later recordings at all. The vocals are not as good and that is why I give it 4 instead of 5 stars and it is hard to hear what he is singing. I bought the old dossier release with the dolls head in the toaster and the rest of this release looks quite cheap with no book-let and no information to talk about The picture the members looks cheap and as if it ws photographed by a friend of Leebs and not a proffesional photographer. However, one has to admire Leeb that is able to create this kind of music on a very limited budget.
A Total Mood.......2002-09-19
This was the first FLA album I ever got, back when it was brand new. It has continued to not only be my favorite Front Line Assembly album, it also is an album which I continue to listen to on a regular basis even well over a decade later.
If you are looking for really intense dance tracks, this album is not for you. Even though a lot of it is very beat driven, for the most part it is an eerie album that evokes a very dark mood. I absolutely love this album, and if you are into any kind of music of this genre and don't own this album you need to get a copy of it.
interesting though primitive.......2001-05-01
This album is interesting because I see many of the elements that Leeb would later develop in his uncountable side-projects and in FLA; Some of these songs sound as pre-gashed senses and crossfire attempts: 'First Reprisal', 'Resistance' others are instrumental and remind me of some Delerium songs: 'Eastern Voices', 'Testimony'; even 'Resistance' anticipates in mood and chorus some songs from the 'Hard Wired' epoch.(no, its chorus is almost identical to 'Mindphaser') However, the album is rather poorly recorded, and cannot compete with the albums that Skinny Puppy were recording at the time; the electronics sound a bit muffled even if the sounds are interesting: it seems more a problem of recording, anyway. Leeb's voice sounds raw; the album is naturally divided into two parts belonging to different recording sessions; the second part, recorded in 1988, sounds a bit better, especially Leeb's voice: compare his voice in 'Resistance', for example. I cannot say this is the best FLA album, but it's maybe more miscellaneous, even if it has less variety of sounds, than other albums such as 'Hard Wired', for example.

I don't buy a lot of jazz, but I saw Raul Midon on TV. He played just two songs and I was amazed. I bought this CD and I was impressed even more. I was impressed enough to buy this CD again and send it to a friend who does buy a lot of jazz. She was also impressed. She says this is good driving music. I say its good music to have playing all day in the background as you work. It'll put you in a good groove. It's now at the top of the list of our jazz playlists. I wish I could see the guy perform in person.
