French Everyman.......2006-02-18

Imagine a baritone voice akin to Gordon Lightfoot's, singing songs reminiscent of the most personal and poignant of Peter Paul and Mary's repertoire, and you have an idea of this wonderful French singer. Moustaki, a former lover of Edith Piaf, himself became an icon in France, and is still working at age 71. He is little known in the US but well worth discovering for those with a touch of the romantic in them.

I acquired the original lp in paris when I lived there in the sixties and listened to it often over the next two decades - I loved it ! It only recently occurred to me to search for it as a cd- my lp was damaged in a water heater leak. I have not not heard the cd but I expect the technical aspects to be only better, I know the content is perfect.

Le meteque of my childhood... when we were more exposed to the Mediterranian music. Moustaki embodies in his music all aspects of the Mediterranian sea, warmth, love, tenderness, and passion.
A wonderful voice. Sadness without being pitiful. The meteque means the outcast a French friend once told me. Moustaki is someone who is an outcast and proud of himself. He has every reason to be.

My Mother asked me to buy this for her, to remind her of 1969. After listening to the album, I could hardly bear to part with it....it's compulsive listening, the words are simple yet wonderful, and his voice is a pleasure to hear. I'm starting my collection now!!

Best franch rap album ever........2006-05-10

I grew up listening to this album. Since then I moved to the US and I just pick it back up, and it still great.

Intelligent French Rap "par excellence"!.......2000-05-20

"Meteque et Mat" is different, especially compared to American Rap / Hip-Hop - and that is it's strength! Akhenaton's lyrics are intelligent, not the 'motherf*****-style' (which one sometimes needs though, but can also get enough of). The rather soft beats please the ear and suggest typical Marseille-flair. The album contains many excellent 'wanna-listen-to-all-day-tracks' such as "L'Americano" [stuffed with witty lines about 'Americanos' ;) ], "Je suis peut-etre..." or "Meteque et Mat". I think who likes Marseille-style French Rap will like this album - it's par excellence!

Drive to Paris.......2000-04-16

A friend of mine advised me about Meteque & Mat, I will always be thankful. The sounds are great the lyrics even better. I drove to Paris in France to buy this CD I could not find it anywhere. If I didn't owe it now.... I would fly to Paris to buy it Again.

Why can't Americans appreciate hip hop like the French do? Real hip hop in France is mainstream, and Akhenaton represents it to the fullest. One of the best producers around, as well as one of the best rhymers. Métèque et Mat is pretty much a classic, get lucky and get the one with 2 bonus tracks.

This is probably the best of French hip hop. The music shows a lot of imagination and lyrics are well written and inspired: they are intelligent and illustrate perfectly the problems young people from the big cities suburbs are confronted with...and their dreams !

I first heard Moustaki in college, and was looking for an album of his for a long time when I got this one. It's a collection of his greatest hits, and is a great introduction to his style. My favorites (not in order...) Le Meteque, Ma Solitude, Danse, and Bahia.

This is a classic album of Moustaki chansons. His lyrics are poetry (easy to follow with even a limited knowledge of French) and his voice and music soothing for the soul.
