Keeping time with love & Egypt.......2005-02-15

As we wait for our flight back to the U.S, the infectious sound of drums, oud, and strings, bounces out over us and we call to a tourist policeman. The obviously fatigued Egyptian officer is slumped in a chair, and only his feet are moving, tapping to the sounds overhead . We point skyward and ask: "Who is that?" It's Amr Diab.

Diab, the passionate Egyptian vocalist, backed with comtemporary production values, is captivating. Though the selection of titles in this collection are largely, easy exercises in musicianship and don't come close to challenging the vocalist's talents, Diab has captivated us.

The airport store clerk tells us: "He is number one in all of Egypt!" Diab is singing, "Awedony," (I used to see you all of the time) and I, for one, am not surprised. "Al Malak el Barea" and all the rest of the cuts are wondrous . . .We buy the cassettes and cds that, we hope, will keep Egypt in our hearts for a while longer.

Great music by an Egyptian icon.......2003-10-02

There is a dominating nostalgic semblance to this album. It reminds me a bit of Weylomoni and Ya Omrena, which are two great albums by Mr. Diab. The music ranges from Nubian-influenced to Moorish to Arabic Pop. Most of the songs are standouts, especially El Malak El Baree and Melk Edaik, which are two of my all-time-favorite songs.

This is a happy album that's bound to cheer you up regardless of your mood, background or language. This is, in my opinion, the power of Amr Diab's work. He is the epitome of musical transcendence in the Middle East.

I am an ardent fan of arabic music but came upon "Awedony" only by chance. It is one of the best albums I have heard in a long time. The music is simply haunting. I am sure whoever listens to it can't help but agree. I hope to collect more of Diab's albums in the time to come.

A fine sample of Egyptian pop; familiar and mildly exotic.......2000-03-14

Awedony was actually the first Egyptian album I've ever heard; and I loved it. Observe the mix of international and Oriental elements; it sounds both familiar and refreshing at the same time. I got it on audio tape when vacationing in Egypt; now I'm getting the CD. You might say, I enjoy it because it brings back vacation memories; well, my friends back home loved it, too.
