5 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing.......2006-08-30

It's a shame that I am only now discovering the amazing band that is the Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra. Anyone slightly interested in ska music will love the sick horn licks and tight changes on this album. The lead singer's nearly incomprehendible rants only add to the charm. The album delivers high energy music with amazing arrangements and exciting tunes.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, affordable Skapara!.......2006-03-10

I love all of Tokyo Ska paradise Orchestra...that is, all except the price of acquiring their music as imports. This is a set of some of their more outstanding pieces, from the energetic A Quick Drunkard to the soulful Lovers' Walk, and the music videos on the disk are a great bonus. In fewer words: pure fun for cheap.

5 out of 5 stars Truly the Best of Tokyo Ska.......2007-04-30

Tokyo Ska. Ska Para. TSPO. Whatever you want to call them, this band is an international institution that's put out more albums over the past 20 years than I can keep up with. The only problem with their studio albums is they can be really hit-or-miss. This best of collection from the past decade culls the excess fat and keeps the meat. The only minor complaint for me is it's missing the awesome cover of the "Love Theme" from the Godfather films that they did on their last labum, Wild peace.

If you've heard of the beand before, but have been wary of giving them a try due to the high import prices then this is the album for you. Ditto for any long-time fans who may have missed their last two or three albums as all the great songs from those albums and more are on this 2 disc collection.

Collects songs from the studio albums: Wild Peace, Answer, High Numbers, and Down Beat Alley.

5 out of 5 stars The best place to start is always at the beginning.......2007-01-26

If you've never bought this before because you thought Ska Para Toujou, AKA Skapara's Introduction, was this amazing band's first musical effort, you thought wrong. This was a 6 track 12" record that was pressed by some soon to fold indie Japanese label, but thankfully it survives in CD form.

rom start to finish, this record is amazing, especially cause it contains Pedorazu, the first track, and their famous cover of Duke Ellington's caravan, appropriately deemed "Skaravan." If you don't own this, do yourself a favor and buy it. And then get all your friends hooked on it.

5 out of 5 stars This is where it all began........2005-11-02

Before they became the world famous Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, selling out stadiums in Japan, they started performing in small venues and on the streets of Tokyo. This album is where it all began, and while it's not the Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra you may know today, it is a definately MUST have for any Skapara fans.

Consisting mainly of covers (including a cover of The Skatalites' cover of Caravan), this album shows that even from the beginning, this was an amazing band. Traditional ska, yet not attempting to sound like another Skatalites, innovating a genre, yet not ignoring their roots, which many ska bands tend to do today.

Whether you're a new fan looking for an introduction to Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, or a Skapara fan who might not be familiar with their earlier works, or simply a ska fan looking for something new, the self titled debut of this amazing band is a great buy.

"We don't know what ska is..." I don't know how they can call a song, much less an entire record that, considering how amazing they are. What makes this record awesome is that the last 3 tracks on here are unreleased material from the first two records, Skapara Toujou and World Famous.

What is weird is that on my copy, they have yellow suits, not pink. Doesn't much matter, since they had both colors back in the day anyway, it was just weird.

4 out of 5 stars Great place to start.......2002-08-06

This is a greatest hits album with some great cartoony album artwork. If you're looking to discover Japan's nouveau-trad-ska outfit Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra from the ground floor, this is a pretty good place to start. A good selection of cuts spanning an influential career.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best they've made!.......2003-07-22

This album is perfect for the first time buyer, specially if you like ska spiced up with other rythms that are not to heavy. (If you want ska-punk this band is not for you).
Funk, Jazz, Swing, and even Dixie beats are sprinkled over without eclipsing the main ska feeling to make a well performed buffet in this album. Dream Express is like nothing you've heard before (track 5), Stepping on the road (track 7) has that funky feeling that reminds you of the good brass ensembles of funk in years gone, before a nerdy computer guy could make music with fake trumpets, trombones, saxes and drums.
Lemon Drops (track 13) makes you feel in Vegas watching a line of Chorus girls if you close your eyes.
If I had to start my collection all over again I would choose this album as my first choice.
A must have if you play baritone sax.

3 out of 5 stars I felt two stars was a bit unfair, so I chose three..........2007-01-26

Grand Prix is not a great album, let's face it. It is definitely the worst Tokyo Ska record to date, and I'm sure the only pothole in their road so far. The problem here isn't the music, but what the band is lacking: Cleanhead Gimura. He passed away in April of 1995, most believe from HIV. It comes as no surprise then that this record feels completely uninspired. Even the solos seem to feel kinda meh, which is not their style at all. I think this was a record produced by a band who had lost themselves with the death of their longtime friend and frontman, and really, who can blame them?

The crazy thing is that Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra is such an amazing band that this record is STILL better than 90% of the other ska band records I've got.

2 out of 5 stars The Best and Worst.......2003-06-30

The absolute best track in this album is track 14:
"Just a little bit of your soul" which they had recorded in their first self-titled maxi single "Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra" with only 6 tracks, all of them flawless.
Track 14 gets the treatment from the most recorded drummer of all time MR. Bernard Purdie in this album.
The worst track of Japanese Pop I ever heard is track 5 "Pit #1", which tries to be funny but in the end is just phony, track 7 is also not worth mentioning, ditto for tracks 11 and 12.

What a wonderful world is quite nice to listen to as well as Let's stay together, which are covers but so skillfully arranged that they get their own merit.

If you are a die-hard fan of the Tokyo Skaparas like me or a fan of Bernard Purdie a.k.a. Mr. Groove you won't mind adding this to your collection, otherwise you'll be happier with Tokyo Ska Paradise "TOJO" their first full lenght album, which has all tracks skillfully groovily played.

The SkaParas prove once more that the less they sing and the more they play, the better the album.

I saw this band live ten years ago and I've been hoping to find an album of theirs ever since then. This is a great album to start with. Most of the songs are crisp and full of energy. They do an amazing cover of "Baby Elephant Walk" that will bring anyone to the dance floor. As for being Ska, Ska Para incorporates many different style of music seemlessly but it's driving force is a huge horn section. I love to play this album for my friends who are skeptical of a Japanese Ska band and watch their jaws drop when they hear what a great sound they have.

4 out of 5 stars Skank those dreads and don't drop your sushi!.......2002-03-29

Many years ago I was listening to the radio (to a now defunct programme) when the car turned into a mosh pit! What in the hell was that? None other than this album. What a blast.Twelve practitioners of the genre, still learning on this album, but quite capaable of pumping out a strict ska beat with jazzy solos over the top. Some of the compositions are not at the same standard as the others, but on the whole, a fun fun fun purchase. Just be glad that it is still in print.

5 out of 5 stars Ska at its best........2002-01-07

If you're a fan of Ska, I suggest that you pick up this recording. I assume no one is reviewing this band because they are a mainstay in Japan, and haven't really made it big in the United States (what Ska band has REALLY made it big in the United States after all).

Anyway, these guys are great, and the sound quality is awesome. I would also recommend picking up their live album Gunslingers. Another good Japanese Ska band is Kemuri.
