Samla Mammas Manna.......2006-05-01

Samla's music is full of mockery and buffoonning. Eventually Samla changed the group's name to Zamla Mammaz Manna and later to Von Zamla. (This album was their first and should be listed under the Samla not Zamla name). The change of the name is somewhat reflective of their perception of their art, nothing-can-be-serious-enough-to-be-serious. Just wondering if Rock in Opposition's main idea required some sort of jest... This album is interesting although pricey

Fun stuff.......2004-08-09

The first s/t album of SMM from 1971 is their best of their releases listed here at amazon.com, these piano based instrumental pieces are neat and fun and have nice little melodies that whispers something about what was to come from Lasse Hollmer. There's some traces of Soft Machine, Gentle Giant, Camel and Caravan to be found here which gives some picture of their orientation and tells where they're coming from - but not where they're going! Where they went some years later was the fabolous 1979 double album Schlagerns Mystik/För Äldre Nybegynnare which is a 5 star release that has it all. Sadly this masterpiece is not listed at amazon.com and is hard to find, but try to find it! This debut SMM release is much milder and more conformative than their coming works, you will perphaps listen to it a few times a year, and that will at best wake up an interest to know where these guys headed to.

Disappointing.......2006-12-04

You may want to buy this if you are interested in the development of modern folkloric music, and it may be enjoyable to listen to if you don't know the languages being sung. However, if you know Spanish, Portuguese, or Italian, I wouldn't recommend it. I find it disconcerting that the lyrics are not set to the music according to the natural rhythm of the words. It seemed an interesting but ultimately failed experiment at cross-cultural pollination; a mish-mash rather than a harmony. For me, this album certainly didn't live up to the rave reviews of previous reviewers.

The Mammas are great! I have hundreds of CDs, and I pull this one out and listen to it frequently--great for the highway. It's hard to believe this CD has been so overlooked and allowed to go out of print. The music is an exhilarating blend of Eastern and European flavors and the passions of four women from divers regions. If you can get hold of a copy, don't miss it!

This album by 'Mammas' is one of the best I have ever listened to: beautiful harmonies, great voices, simply magical! Highly reccommended to all music lovers.

Enough clowning here too, the very first track, excellent overall, ends with a choir of drunken Vikings. The next one, Liten, is a great art-rock piece. Sucken is a nice little intermission featuring a good guitar and piano and Lang Ner is a (well played) mix of folkish tunes. Track 6 (the long word) is a fine thing and Influenser is an interesting composition (exclusive of the rooster battle cries in the middle of it), reminds of Yes' Fish. The last track is a mix of avant-garde and folk, very good guitar.

Members of Zamla Mammaz Manna included: Hans Bruniusson (drums, xylophone, chimes, vibraphone, song), Eino Haapala (electric guitar, acoustic guitar, vibraphone, song), Lars Hollmer (electric piano, Korg polyphonic, Hohner-symphonic grand piano, accordion, song), Lars Krantz (electric bass, double-bass, acoustic guitar, song). Samla Mammas Manna started in the early '70s and are still a vivid band. This is their second name in their three different progressive guises, reflecting the beginning of their more experimental aspects. This intense and energetic music is filled with happy pranks and fast turnings and has for more than 25 years amused its listeners all over the world. This double album consists of an album of live improvisations from 1977 and an album of more typical Samla/Zamla material, although with more of a folky influence that shows through more than ever before. Frontman Lars Hollmer has beside his solo career also been part of several international musical constellations (Ramlösa Kvällar, Fem Söker En Skatt, Accordion Tribe).

Album Description

SAMLA MAMMAS MANNA was at the end of the Seventies and in the Eighties, the Swedish representative of the collective Rock In Opposition founded by Chris CUTLER. Probably the most accessible of this scene, this group mixes Progressive rock, Scandinavian folk, childish melodies and avant-garde audacity in a delectable cocktail. The vocals in Swedish, the use of accordion, handbells, marimbas and percussions of all kinds gives a very personal touch to this music. "Kaka" marks the return of the original line-up in 1999, with Coste APETREA (Guitar), Hans BRUNIUSSON (Drums & percussions), Lars HOLLMER (Keyboards & accordion) and Lars KRANZ (Bass).

Odd prog veterans still crazy after all these years.......2003-03-27

Samla Mammas Manna was a legendary group of Swedish progressive music in the 70's. Still is. This CD with new material (live and studio) was released in 1999 and if you have enjoyed what this group has done earlier you might appreciate this CD too. The line up is the same as in the mid 70's; Lars Hollmer on keyboards, Lars Krantz electric bass, Coste Apetrea guitar and Hans Bruniusson drums. The music is basically of two kinds. On one hand there are the live improvisations which are made up on the spot. They include crazy shouting and almost abuse of musical intruments. Then there are the complicated instrumentals which are performed in a rather strict way. These tunes are often made up of endless variations of different themes and they include a lot of rock energy. Two pieces that deserves the 5 stars are Lyckliga Titanic and Första Ikarien. I can't figure out how they remember all those tricky little notes, but I think that some of these tunes are stuff dating from the 70's that never ended up on record (until now) so I guess they have had played them over and over again thru the years. I saw this band in concert in May 2002 and that was a fun experience. But I have to say that I don't listen to the Kaka CD too often, and when I do I pick one or two of the heavy instrumentals. The shouting gets a little tedious. If only they could do at least ONE song with serious and beautiful vocals.
