5 out of 5 stars instantly one of my favorite bands.......2007-07-19

one of the reviews before me said it sounds the same as everything else. wrong! this is an amazing album by an amazing band, so whoever wrote that should go listen to rap or something because he shouldn't be listening to metal. he also obviously knows nothing about the band because he said something about their lyrics not being "faithful" like demon hunter or something like that, and they're a christian band. like norma jean, they're lyrics have nothing to do with their faith, but this guy obviously thinks they're evil or something. anyway, for some reason Still Remains reminded me of children of bodom. i guess it's because of the not overly heavy guitar that gives an interesting effect when the vocals sound like they do. i love the background vocals, which are not used too much like some bands (ehem, cough, bleeding through, cough) i'm not complaining about bleeding through, they're one of my favorite bands, but they are a good example of too much background singing. anyway, i liked the actual singing which is a huge compliment because i'm picky about that.
the drums are also very good, but aren't that loud, so i get frustrated trying to hear them and then not being able to. the keyboard usually doesn't stand out too much, which is good, because it blends with the guitars well. you should definantly buy this album if you like metalcore of any kind. it is just plain awesome

5 out of 5 stars this is some good melodic metalcore.......2007-03-11

metalcore, believe it or not, debuted in the 1990's with Hatebreed and Spite, and then melodic metalcore debuted in 2005 with these guys. it seems every underground label has metalcore blood flowing in their veins.
Still Remains is definitely the band to carry the metalcore torch. reading through the lyrics, one can tell that these guys are Christian. this is a good band for a Christian collection among your Zao, Mortification, Petra (RIP), Stryper, Bloodgood (RIP), Kutless, Jacob's Dream, Narnia, As I lay Dying, The Showdown, Tourniquet, Flee The Seen, Underoath, and Extol CD's.

5 out of 5 stars Best Metal Album of the YEAR....Hands Down.......2006-12-09

Flat out, if you don't like this album, you need a psychological assessment ASAP! I have listened to this CD everyday since I bought it 14 months ago, at least a song or two. The talent on this album is huge, the array of instruments, dual guitars, double bass, keyboards, all the elements are there. If music has evolved, then this is its finished product. Get it now!

5 out of 5 stars Best New Upcoming band!!.......2006-06-01

I love everything about this band..
Vocals,guitars,bass,drums,synth...every song is so godlike..
If your a fan of In Flames,Soilwork,Children OF Bodom,As i lay dying...Then you NEED this one!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2006-05-11

I don't know why people are listening to new metal bands if they don't like this.

Yes these guys are unmistakably groupable with the in flames killswitch unearth types. One thing they have to offer other than generally strong song writing, is: keyboards! keyboards. Im a sucker. I even like that new found glory song just because of the keyboards.

So anyway this album is basically the strong, active, new wave of metal sounding stuff plus keyboards. I would say that underoath's 'changing of times' comes closest just because there's that vibe of something other than hate or whining buried in the heaviness.

I have narrowed my bands from this general genre down to about 10 now. So maybe if you're open to liking a good chunk of this kind of music, including beands yet unheard as to you, this album could surprise you and be up there with unearth or as i lay dying.....rather than down there with shadows fall (ok thats just a cheap shot).

Album Description

As the lead singer, songwriter and sole founder of the New York-based combo Mary Lee's Corvette, Mary Lee Kortes has built a reputation for combining sublimely melodic songcraft with personally charged, emotionally nuanced lyrics. Her work has won reams of critical acclaim and a devoted international fan base. Her new album, Love, Loss & Lunacy features twelve new Kortes-penned songs that maintain the classic pop sensibility and resonant lyrical insight of her prior work, while introducing a raw electric edge that lends added urgency to her compelling vocal performances. Produced by veteran musician and songwriter Steven Butler, the album was born out of a demo session that took on a life of its own. It features various longtime cohorts Keith Christopher (Yayhoos), Konrad Meissner (Silos), and Brad Albetta (Martha Wainwright), as well as her longstanding musical and marital collaborator Eric Ambel (Bottle Rockets, Blue Mountain, Nils Lofgren, Steve Earle). The loose, organic nature of the recording process suited her new material. "Those three words seem to sum up life, and they all feed into one another," Kortes says of the title of her new album Love, Loss & Lunacy. "If you don't love something, you can't lose it. When you lose something you love, it makes you crazy. And if you're crazy enough, you can fall back in love."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Pure Pop for Now, People!.......2006-07-27

Want to turn your friends on to the best album of the year? Listen no further! "Love, Loss & Lunacy' outdoes every release I've heard in 2006.

I may be doing the album a disservice by labeling it "pop." Yes, Mary Lee and her band lay down one catchy hook after another, delivered by her perfect voice and tight, not-too-much production. But there is an edge and hint of darkness to the sweetness. This isn't bubblegum or diabetes-inducing pop like perhaps the Veronicas or even the Corrs of late (although I enjoy those artists). No, this is a perfect blend of darkness and light, sweetness and poignancy.

The songs are beautifully written and have depth behind their immediate hook-friendly accessibility. After you're humming along you start to reflect on the lyrics and realize there's some deeper stuff here. There's a lot going on for a "pop" record but the production doesn't overwhelm Mary Lee's incredible voice, which is intimate, strong and vulnerable all at the same time. One thing's for sure: you won't be able to stop listening.

To help curious fellow consumers I've thought of who I would compare this band to and I just haven't hit it yet. There's a little Bangles and a dab of Marshall Crenshaw. But the truth is Mary Lee's Corvette is wonderfully unique. And don't be shy if you love the hard stuff. I adore Drive-By Truckers, Foo Fighters, Audioslave, etc. Mary Lee's Corvette is not a "rock" band but has enough muscle to satisfy.

I purchased this cd solely based on Amazon's recommendation and the few audio clips I sampled. A previous reviewer commented that this album suits any mood and that's true. If you like pop/rock and want to hear something really smart, catchy, fun, moving and well-crafted, don't miss the best album of the year.

4 out of 5 stars Love, Loss & Lunacy...Wins!.......2006-07-04

Are you looking for one of those wonderful Under-The-Radar albums we all just love to find? The kind you are absolutely gob-smacked with on first listen and you can't wait to tell a friend? Then this may be your place to stop. Mary Lee Kortes, aka Mary Lee's Corvette, has done it again on her new cd Love, Loss & Lunacy. This New York resident has delivered the goods with a stunning meld of accessible power pop, good ol' rock and roll, punchy lyrics and foot-tapping joy, all held together by a cracker-jack band. She can out-jangle the Bangles when she wants and easily go beyond the crowing of Sheryl with soaring vocals and tough, yet tender, songwriting. All this from the woman who delivered a spot-on live rendition of His Bobness's Blood On The Tracks a few albums back. Some of my faves here are the percolating Thunderstruck, the waltz-like Where Did I Go Wrong Elton John, the Beatley horns in Wasting The Sun, the infectious Learn From What I Dream and the punchy Blood Of Stones. Each song is a little gem and I urge you to pop it in the car player for a great summer spin. Perfect if you're happy and equally touching if you're feeling blue, it is THE cd to have and pass on. Give the gift of uplifting the soul. Uh,uh,oh indeed. Mary Lee's back and she's got a winner here, folks! Barnes Newberry, Host, Highway 61 Revisited (www.wumb.org)

5 out of 5 stars no weak tracks here.......2006-06-27

Wildly talented, wildly good looking, Mary Lee gets some of the best musicians in the business to work behind her, and the results are always stunning. Her BLOOD ON THE TRACKS was as honest a paean as the great poet could ever receive, and 700 MILES brought Mary Lee's own intelligent lyrics to the forefront. Her latest, LOVE,LOSS & LUNACY has it all, with nary a dud track, and like all multi-layered works of art, just gets better with each listening. Come back to Baltimore, Mary Lee!

5 out of 5 stars Mary Lee has gone rockin'.......2006-06-15

Had a hard time going to sleep one Sunday night a few weeks ago because there wasn't a part of my body I could lie on that wasn't sore. That day I had taken out my old mountain bike which had been rotting away in the garage for quite some time. Got new tires and did the beach bike path from PV to Temescal Canyon and back. A 44 mile round trip - I think not bad for a 62-year old who hadn't been in the saddle for some time.

Musicians and other artists who maintain their vitality are more in touch with changing times than the average bloke - more in touch with the tides of society; and their artwork changes with that changing pulse of the world, as reflected in their own psyche - if the artist is to maintain vibrancy. So many of them don't, and so many fade away.

People in general are not so eagerly open to change as are vital artists. Even the most radical of us can tend toward favorite habits and cherished ruts. The more one may think he is not of this ilk, the more deeply he is prone to resist substantive change in his psyche and life.

Probably.

When a musician gives to the world a new album, fans generally want it to be just like the last album, except different. What they get sometimes is a far cry from what they expected because their admired artist has moved on - and the fan prefers his comfy old ruts. The fan in this case can accept the invitation to make the leap; or be lazy and betray his band.

A tragic example of this is Garbage's innovative album "Beautiful Garbage". So many fans of Garbage turned away after the release of BG that the band, as a survival move, issued a subsequent album that was merely more of the same old stuff as previous albums.

Don't like your favorite artists new album? Look at your life and blame not the artist. Likely as not it's your own inertia trying to keep you stagnant while the world moves on.

I received Love, Loss and Lunacy a week before I was to leave on vacation to Yosemite; so I saved the album for the 400-mile drive.

At 3 a.m., with only 3 hours of sleep behind me, while cruising I-405 north toward Yosemite - I popped the album into the player.

It kept me awake! It certainly kept me awake, like a gale force wind gushing thru the speakers.

Here, I was expecting an album just like the last one only different, and here was sockin' rock & roll at 3 a.m. I was expecting sweet melodies in Mary Lee's sweet voice, and I got electric jams; electric shock. High voltage.

Whatever possessed her???

But Mary Lee's considerable talent with lyric and melody is still there in this new album, amidst all the electric foment, the driving beats, the rockin' guitars. The things I've loved about her music in the past are all still there amid the blast of rock energy. I'd have never thought, but her style of lyric and melody does very well with rock.

The more I listen the more I like this new album. A yearning keeps surfacing in me to pop in one of her older CD's and let my psyche be soothed for a while. And someday I will listen again to the old albums. But for now I like the freshness of LL&L, even if it kind of jangles me.

Between Mary Lee going rock, and the Ditty Bops doing their cross-country album release bicycle trip, I've been inspired and jostled into leaving some of my old comfortable life behind and for one thing, hitting the bike paths with all those younger guys on their thousand dollar bikes.

Oh, lordy.

Billy's latest Grammy nominated CD on ArtistShare!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "Lyric" Finds Billy Childs in Top Form.......2006-11-13

After about two decades of releases as a leader, Billy Childs continues to produce cutting edge performances of his compositions and arrangements at the highest level of musicianship. This latest recording is his most solid work as a leader. It is worth a listen for anyone who is interested in serious music with lyric qualities.

For the past several years, Billy has not released any CDs with himself as a leader that primarily feature his own compositions, but "In Carson's Eyes" gets things off to a hypnotically beautiful start by telling a musical story that is full of brilliant intricacies. "Goodbye, Friend" and "Prelude in Bb Major" both demonstrate his uncanny ability to move effortlessly between classical music and jazz while at times seeming to give a nod of acknowledgement to Pat Metheny. "Into the Light" is a Grammy Award winning composition that demonstrates a torrent of virtuosity and unpredictable intensity that would be worthy of an artist whose skill reminds the listener of Chick Corea without sounding like Chick Corea in any way.

The track that radio stations would most likely play is "Scarborough Faire" because people would recognize it, it has many of the same beautiful and hypnotic qualities of "In Carson's Eyes", and it is also the shortest track on the CD. At the end of the CD, Billy shakes things up with "American Landscape". It features exciting playing from all of the musicians and unpredictable development of the composition itself. Hopefully, more tunes will be like it on future recordings.

Some criticism that could be made about "Lyric" as a whole is that there seem to be long portions of the recording that are dark and foreboding, the music does not always `swing' in the usual sense of the term, and there are no spoken lyrics on this CD. At the same time similar criticism could be made about some of the works of Gil Evans who is looked upon as having significant impacts on all of jazz through his orchestral arrangements and his collaborations with Miles Davis. As a whole, "Lyric" draws some elements from a vast range of musical influences that span Billy Childs' career.

4 out of 5 stars Luna Sea has come full-circle.......2004-04-04

"Lunacy" being the final album of J-ROCK uber-band Luna Sea, there are a few things to consider:

Fans from their indies days may complain that Luna Sea's style has changed too much--and, indeed, "Lunacy" is a far cry from the days when Ryuichi screamed more often than sang, his macabre lyrics sliding into gothic darkness. Yet "Lunacy" is a gem, an album of musicians highly-polished and mature, one last testament to the powerful unit they had become. Sugizo's tribute to James Bond--"Sweetest Coma Again"--rings with his genius and talent, in structure as well as aesthetics (his lead guitar never ceases to amaze), and as always Inoran complements him perfectly as Second Guitar. Shinya and J provide the solid backbone of "Lunacy", unspoiled and amazing, with percussion and bass guitar that seem almost unreal; while Ryuichi's infamous voice matches every note, nuance, and tone with the pop majesty that he has so comfortably groomed himself into.

"Lunacy" is the end of a story: shortly after its release, Luna Sea disbanded and its members went their separate ways. While it may not hold the passion of earlier albums ("Mother" and "Style" for example), or the sharp angst that propelled songs from their more visual days to beautiful ubiquity ("Rosier" comes to mind), "Lunacy" can stand by itself as an album of particular craftmanship and ability.

Tracklisting:
Be Awake * Sweetest Coma Again (featuring DJ KRUSH) * gravity * KISS (featuring DJ KRUSH) * 4:00 AM * VIRGIN MARY * white out * a Vision * FEEL * TONIGHT * Crazy About You

More sensitive fans might wish to note that there is some distinct profanity in "white out".

5 out of 5 stars 'Slave' from Malaysia.......2002-09-24

LS did a lot of new things in this album
Many fans complaint about this album coz they can't accept LS's new style
This album is pretty good but I prefer 'Style' coz their way of playing is really special in that album

Great song from Lunacy
4:00am
one of my favourite,Ryuichi(vocal) sounded really 'lazy' in the beginning ,at first it sounds pop but in the ending part they changed it to alternative that sounds awesome

Virgin Mary
A masterpiece. It's the best track of the whole CD.Ryuichi did a great job in the chorus.
If u like ths song try one of these track from their previous album=Another,Moon,Genesis of mind,Forever and ever

Crazy about you
The chorus was really good ,the ending was near perfect

Gravity
The guitar sounded really cool.J(bass) did a wonderful job in this track

To me,the way to like a song is by understanding it,not by language but by music......DPO

3 out of 5 stars A little bit disapointed.......2002-03-27

First time I listened to J-Rock I thought all the groups were cool. But I was a little bit disapointed with Luna Sea. All their songs sound exactly the same. They don't change their style or the feeling inside the song. You might get bored after listening this CD twice.

I recommend you to buy this CD or any other by Luna Sea if you like groups that sound the same in every single and song. Also if you are their fan. It's not a bad group, only a simple one, nothing unique in their songs. Their best song is "TRUE BLUE", the only one that seems to be "REALLY COOL".

It's an average group. That's all.

5 out of 5 stars Luna Sea does it again!.......2001-07-03

Luna Sea experiences a couple of new beats and styles (some DJ mixes), not quite the same fashion as before. The slow songs are more passionate. Then the fast ones really J-rocks. I missed their usual funky guitar on the background. Great acquisition! (Image and Style still my favorites) The price was worth (considering what it costs in yens and shipping from Japan!). Even if you are not a big Luna Sea fan, you'll love it!

5 out of 5 stars lol, play it loud?.......2001-05-20

well, first off: the cd is called Lunacy. hehe. this is Luna Sea's best cd ^^ Sweetest coma again is a shocking song, really powerful! Tonight is a really pop song, and the tune is really catchy. the lyrics are really capturing, as are all of luna sea's songs are. virgin mary is a great song; nothing beats luna sea's random christian music! ^-^ luna sea was the greatest band, and this cd really is their greatest.

Awesome Italian metal!! This is a great concept album. Aside from that this album is a complete assault of your musical senses. It includes everything from operatic vocals to electronica stylings mixed in with very hard hitting death metal riffs and gutteral vocals. If you are a fan of Melodic/Symphonic Death Metal this is a buy you wont regret.

It's been many years since I first heard "Rhymes...," and countless great albums have come & gone. But, among the 1,500 or so CDs I hold in my collection, Memento Mori finds their way into my CD changer at a higher rate than most others. Yes, it's an extension of Candlemass, obviously. But don't be fooled: Memento Mori goes in a different direction, weaving a brand of power-doom that's rougher around the edges than it's predecessor.

I know the countless Candlemass devotees would like to see me drawn & quartered for this, but "Rhymes..." struck a much deeper chord in me than most Candlemass. Interestingly, while Candlemass sustained it's music over several albums (and hopefully more, in the future), "Rhymes of Lunacy" is the only Memento Mori CD I consider essential. While a few tracks from the others stand out, the band was never again able to bring together the powerful production values and foreboding, intense-yet-atmospheric writing of "Rhymes..."

This CD was an epiphony in my musical evolution. Acquire it, and may it do the same for you.

5 out of 5 stars At The Gates meets Haggard!!!.......2004-09-23

I was very impressed with this record, I've never have heard of Dark Lunacy before, but a friend of mine told me "buy it!", normally I would ignore him, but there's was something about this record, so I was "oh, what the heck...", I'm glad I did, you have to listen to this album!!!
These guys combine melodic death metal á la Gothenburg (At The Gates, old In Flames, Arch Enemy, Dark Tranquillity, etc) with classical music (á la Haggard, only is not that folk), with extremely good results.
There are 11 tracks on this album (with "Dolls" being a cut from their first record), and none is a filler, the whole album flows very good, theres no bad song, a highly recommendable!!!

3 out of 5 stars Live at MANCHESTER England 1982.......2002-12-31

Here is NICO, playing a set that dovetails nicely, as far as material goes, with the music from the other LIVE MANCHESTER SHOW, Heroine. (the same show that is available on DVD, of the same name.) I have played both shows next to each other, and I find the sound from the two MANCHESTER LIBRARY shows to be so close, as to qualify for sequencial nights, of the same concert run. Maybe it is. If not, then three years MAY have elapsed between these two live Manchester shows, but you cant hear it, in her singing, or in most of the songs' arangements. For sound quality, JANITORY OF LUNACY is very clear. Some of NICO's live material suffers from poor recording, or a bad audience response. She seemed to be comfortable, and well liked at these shows. Aparently, NICO liked Manchester too, because it reminded her of BERLIN. She says this in her interview, altho WHY the two towns are similar, who knows. Maybe you could score smack easily at both cities, or they were both bombed out in WWII, whatever. This is NICO, singing in her hometown. If you want to find out about NICO's music, naturally you start with her studio albums. Nico and John Cale (her producer/Velvet Underground alumni) had a chemistry that is remarkable. MARBLE INDEX defined GOTH ROCK, way before it even had a name. HOWEVER, if you really want to know NICO the person, listen to her LIVE. This is a great start for that, cos you get the interviews, the little bit of video with "heros", etc. Also, you DO get to hear a couple of studio tracks, to compair, with her live sound. Bow down to beautiful ice queen FEMME FATALE, and give her a fix. She will sing for you, the fables of GENGHIS KHAN, THE SPHINX and other HEROS. She will BE YOUR MIRROR, and do her siren's wail thru ALL TOMORROWS PARTIES, then kiss you with PURPLE LIPS. When you turn to her, you see that NO ONE IS THERE. Nico had reached THE END, leaving you with a last FROZEN WARNING: Never forget the FATA MORGANA. Nobody can.

      3 out of 5 stars A Haunting Live Recording.......2001-08-06

"Janitor of Lunacy" is the newest release of a live Nico show. I think the performance takes place in Berlin, but I'm not totally sure. What I do know is that this CD is fantastic in some parts and not in others. The best moments on this CD are when Nico is backed by her band The Faction. Vegas and Saeta are awesome. Ghengis Khan has fantastic instrmentation except for the fact that Nico's voice fade's in and out due to the slip shod recording. Janitor of Lunacy is good, but nothing spectacular. Tananore is excellent. Afraid is still beautiful. The jazz version of Femme Fatal is terrible (worst on here). A voice only version of All Tomorrows Parties is still powerful. No One is There is a pleasant surprise; powerful and nice harmonium sound. Frozen Warnings is always good. Orley Flights was misnamed Closing the Door; it's ok, but still a weak song. An finally, Heroes is great as usual. The studio versions of Vegas and Saeta are the same ones that were on the Icon album; her best 80's songs aside from My Heart is Empty and the entire Fata Morgana recording. The live video feed of her performing Heroes is a ... version of the performance from Underground Experience. Forget this one cause it's just terrible, go buy the Underground DVD. Nico newbies would do best to buy one of her studio recordings first (or Do or Die if you want a live recording); collectors must own this as it is cool to hear Nico talk every once and a while, and the Faction sounds awesome.
