mixed feelings, 3 stars........2007-07-05

There are quite a few of Debussy's piano pieces that immediately ring a bell in the mind - Clair de Lune, Gollowog's Cake Walk, La Petite Negre, En Bateau, La Fille aux Cheveux de Lin, La Catedrale Engloutie, etc. These pieces are not, in my opinion, where Thibaudet shines, and make me wish I had a different set (but who's?) The Sunken Cathedral is quite nice, I admit. I will also say that he is quite listenable, whereas Geiseking (sp?) made me so angry I had spent $60 that I stopped buying classical cds for about 10 years.

On the other hand, Thibaudet does have technical mastery - the pieces with which I am less familiar, etudes especially (referring to vol. 2 of the set) are played, to my ears at least, very well, and in fact bring a smile to the face. There is no 'bad' playing anywhere, but the pieces in which I would have liked more musicality lead me to think that the others which I haven't developed an opinion on will sound better in other sets as well. The search continues. At least this set is a good bar.

I am a big fan of Jean-Yves playing(and a Debussy fan) so I enjoyed this recording. Piano style is a personal preference. (as a musician and pianist I know what I like and what I don't like and it is often not the same as what others prefer) If you enjoyed any other recordings by Jean-Yves or have seen him and concert and loved him you will enjoy this recording.

Superior recordings and performances.......2005-09-18

The Penguin Guide to CDs and DVDs has Thibaudet's sets of the complete Debussy solo piano music at the top of the digital recordings, and this is certainly high quality.

We have several recordings of the Preludes and some other works, but there is nothing to come close to Thibaudet for great performances and superior recording quality.

The liner notes are very helpful, and in the first set you get different articles in English, French, German and Italian. Great if you are multilingual, but only of marginal interest to me. The second set has one article and translations, not separate articles.

Well worth purchasing.

Another installment of great by Thibaudet.......2000-06-13

Thibaudet certainly has a great knack for playing French music. Perhaps it is because he is French himself, or perhaps it is because he has been blessed with a wonderful insight to piano music in general. I say this, because he brings such great musicianship to whatever he puts to record or performance. This two CD set of Debussy's Preludes exudes the personalities of both the composer and the pianist. Debussy, known as the great impressionist composer, delicately has painted numerous portraits in his preludes and this recording certainly does well at bringing them out. Technically, these pieces are played with virtuosity and clear attention to precision, clarity, and musicality. One of the best parts of this set is the a bonus CD of short interviews with Thibaudet in various languages where he himself explains what he has brought to the table in playing these pieces and what insights he had in mind when approaching these pieces.

Debussy with a difference!.......2007-03-10

Do not let the dismissive review below make you dismiss this amazing and breath taking complete set. Like his Scriabin recordings, Gordon Fergus-Thompson works wonder with the well known piece like Clair de Lune, Arabesque and Reverie, and breathes new life into the music by his keen sense of tonal colours and delicacy. When it comes to impressionist music, no pianists can match Richter, who played Clair de Lune, Pavane or miroirs like a miracle, but Fergus-Thompson creats his own unique soundscape.

He is one of very few pianists alive who pay careful attention to how a note produced on the instrument decays and merges with other notes, while most of pianist nowadays focus mostly on starting point of the sound. That's a secret of the richness of colours and expression in his pianism.

He is often criticised for lack of technical prowess, compared to past masters like Gieseking or Michelangeli, but I can not detect even a hint of technical weakness or instability in this set. This is simply a different and highly personal interpretation, and it is a shame to miss out this magical music making simply because it is different from the mainstream interpretation.

One Star for Charity's Sake.......2007-03-01

Avoid this set!!! The man is a gifted pianist but has no understanding on how to interpret the music. This is the nadir of all the Debussy piano sets. With Walter Gieseking's superlative set available why would you want dog food when you can eat supreme cuisine!!!

Gordon Fergus-Thompson does an amazing job of playing and interpreting Debussy's music. I have been playing piano for years--especially Debussy--and this CD really captures the essence of the music. I'd recommend this to anyone.

Complete Debussy.......2006-12-13

These recordings are some of the highest quality Debussy you'll find. There is a freedom that comes across in Fergus-Thompson's playing that you won't find in other so-called great recordings. Instead of trying to sound "Debussy-like", the music is played naturally while maintaining accuracy and original intent of the composer. Recording quality is up to date. Box set is 4 discs, with the body nicely separated into larger works with dates included.

Experience the music of a 20th century original.......2001-01-26

Jehan Alain was a French organist and composer who was tragically killed while fighting the Germans near Saumur in 1940. At the time of his death, he was only 29 years old. Despite his youth, he left behind a significant body of organ music that could be mistaken for no other composer. This two CD set, running almost two and a half hours, includes all his published works, including some that have only recently come to light. Unlike many French composers who wrote for the organ on the vastest of canvases, many of Alain's works run five minutes or less.

One thing is for certain: Kevin Bowyer has technique to burn. He also gets wonderful sounds from the Marcussen organ at Tonbridge School. In fact, the recorded sound is excellent and atmospheric throughout. With one caveat, this is a wonderful introduction to the music of Alain. There is much here that is readily accessible to lovers of organ music including, but certainly not limited to, the two Chorals, Dorien and Phrygien; the two sets of variations, on Lucis Creator and on a theme by Clement Jannequin (although that attribution is in doubt); and the mystical pieces, Le Jardin Suspendu and the Postlude pour l'Office de Complies. There are also works that do not make their wonders readily apparent, but are well worth coming to know. Then, of course, there is Alain's most famous work, Litanies.

And it is Bowyer's performance of that piece about which I have reservations. He plays it breathtakingly fast--again, no question about technique--but the tempo is so rapid in places that, to me at least, the music sounds hectic. Repeated notes at the beginnings of phrases blur together, so that unless you knew that the notes were repeated, you'd hardly be able to tell. When he gives the music room to breathe, the performance is fine; if only he had done so throughout the piece! This performance, although perfectly acceptable, does not rise to the same level as the rest of this recording. And if you like your toccatas astonishingly fast, this performance will not disappoint.

So, if you only want Litanies and have no interest in Alain's other organ works, you'd be better off to purchase one of the many collections that include that piece. However, if you want a survey of the organ works of this original master, there is no need to hesitate.

Happy to be the first 1 star........2007-07-14

I should probably qualify my distate for these albums by saying that, like many piano players I don't particularly care for, the playing is not bad, is in fact even fine, but I can't stand the style; the recording quality itself was only a minor issue for me, as sometimes I like the sound of an older recording, it gives it more weight, more dream quality.

I bought this set about 10 years ago, for about $60, which at the time was an exorbitant amount (being a broke college student). I knew and loved many of Debussy's pieces, and liked none of them here. I was so dissappointed that I didn't buy another classical cd for about 9 years, the next actually being the BCO's awesome recording of Suk's Asreel Symphony.

I now own Thibaudet's Debussy, and while I'm stile not completely satisfied there, that set goes up from the 1 star here to 3 stars, and is enjoyable enough that I don't mind having spent the money.

This set, however, will forever mark itself in my mind as the archnemesis of that other iconic Purple album - Jean Francois Paillard's 'The Pachelbel Canon', which is the only one to own (well, the second one to own - the ultimate recording being on the disc with the two Fasch trumpet concertos).

I have to agree with the reviewers complaining about the sound quality on these CD's. I first discovered Debussy's piano music through these recordings when I was left my grandfather's record collection and I was obsessed. I bought this hoping to get back that vinyl magic but this is a murky compressed sounding thing, with none of the charm it should have. Boo.

EMI IS ATROCIOUS!!!!!!!!!.......2006-10-28

I despise EMI and for good reasons.
They have terrible recorded sound... from what I heard, i thought gieseking performed these pieces during the 1940s. I have remastered recordings from the 1920s and 30s that sound better than this!! But then again, EMI was never known for providing top-notch sonics.
Sheesh few years ago i purchased pablo casals on emi and it was simply horrible. i had to go get the one on testament (which is, by the way, superior to the Naxos remastering - believe it or not!).
I can't believe that much of gieseking's sound is lost and there's not much we can do about it!!!! emi will burn in hell... lol.

While there are those individuals, less sophisticated than my wonderful self, who are wont to dismiss Debussy as music only for those whose horticural inclinations run contrary to the course of gravity, I would have to venture that they don't know a good thing when they see one, and that to shun a composer merely because his fan base is given to lifting shirts would be nothing short of childish. After all, Debussy is really rather good, brilliant in fact, and if the good people at EMI should happen to let his liner notes be written by an inveterate pillow-biter, that does nothing to detract from his merits. "Bravo Debussy!" I say, and as I knock back another pastis enquire nonchalantly, "Anyone for tennis?"

SENSITIVE, STYLISH DEBUSSY, OFTEN DISTINGUISHED.......2001-06-27

As with most of the Vox Box CD transfers I review, I have owned the original vinyls. Vox Productions, Inc., was, for me, in the 60's and 70's, what Naxos has been to the 80's and 90's. It was a company flush with a willingness to take chances. Chances on repertoire. Chances on completist projects. Chances on artists and performers. Vox went where the BIG companies feared to tread, and went with a vengeance. They were way, way ahead of their time; however, after the takeover by the Moss Music Group, and then Essex Entertainment, Vox has become almost a relic. So few releases are forthcoming from their grand "vaults," that it just breaks the heart. (Who else would have the moxie to produce six records of Reger quartets and chamber works? Or Haydn's complete string quartets and piano sonatas? Etc.) Yes. It breaks the heart.

Luckily, though, during the early 90's, Vox/Essex DID have enough drive to churn out some really classic Vox Box two-fers, and included amongst these were Peter Frankl's stylish performances of Debussy's piano music. Of course I grabbed them up! And was thrilled. I had "lived" with Frankl's Debussy for 30 years; he had always served the music faithfully, with sensitivity and distinction. Volume 1 offers up fine staples: the Preludes (complete), the Arabesques, Reverie, Suite Bergamasque and the Images (complete).

From the opening Prelude, Book One, Frankl establishes an on-target impressionism that never fails; it is his hallmark, his purity. Both Books retain a sound-world that is magical, hypnotic, moody, nostalgic; and, yet, as in La Cathedrale Engloutie, thrilling, as well. These Preludes can stand easily beside the best on the market today.

As can the Images: fine, glorious readings filled with color, atmosphere and panache. Listen, for example, to Images, Book One, No. 1 ("Reflets Dans L'eau"). Shimmering, lilting, mesmerizing.

In Frankl's hands, the Suite Bergamasque, a perennial hackneyed favorite, seems refreshed, renewed. The grand opening "Prelude" is filled with promise; the "Menuet" and "Clair de Lune" are subtle and moving; the "Passepied," fleet and perfectly judged.

The two Arabesques are simply exquisite; and the Reverie, although less romantic than most I've heard, nods its daydreaming head more towards hidden ghosts than lost loves. A most interesting take on yet another ultra-popular piece.

All-in-all, this set is a phenomenal bargain. Frankl is never less than a fine mentor and, more often than not, touched by Debussy's muse. The sound is quite good, the piano image firm, detailed, full.

If you're looking for a great performance of a specific Debussy piano piece, this CD set may not be for you. Frankl's interpretations, while good, are not the best out there. However, if you are looking for an all-around good performance of the COMPLETE Debussy piano music, then these CDs are an extremely good deal; for $10 you probably won't find much better than Frankl's fine playing.

Debussy at His Best.......1999-08-01

This is a wonderful selection of Debussy piano music. Frankl's touch is precise and gentle. Fans of Debussy, or anyone who enjoys listening to the piano, will enjoy this purchase. I must also say that this is a remarkable price for 2 CDs and over two hours of music.

The gaspard is the gem here, worth the high price of admission even. In fact, surprisingly, everything is good here, except the Schumann. And this is from the performer of "the" performance(s) of op 17. The Kreisleriana is weak fingered, there is no other way about it, which is odd because it was recorded during the same performance as the ravel, which is at times miraculous. I have kept thinking maybe this time i'll hear it, giving such a great pianist as Fior the benefit of the doubt, but, everyone has their off days, and even though, i am still glad to have heard this music by one of our generations greatests hands and minds.
It is unfortunate there is not more ravel in fiorentino's discography, from this disc, which inlcudes gaspard, the comp valse sent, prelude, menuet, and a la maniere borodine, they are all top notch performances. The Debussy is also good, the relflects dans l'eau is good by any standards, but for those who really have studied fior's past recordings or have seen him live, it is not quite what you would expect. Exquisite Debussy from an underrated pianist.......2000-09-13

I bought this set because it included most of the pieces missing from my Debussy piano collection, and the Penguin Guide rated it fairly high. I've been listening to it frequently ever since and can only wonder why Haas is rarely mentioned alongside other great Debussians like Gilels, Arrau, Roge et al. The Philips sound is clean and full and these performances, especially of the Etudes, leave nothing to be desired. No dreamy indulgence here, just penetrating exploration of Debussy's unique tonal world. At this price, the complete duo-piano music (in which Haas is joined by Noel Lee) is a bonus! Don't hesitate on this one, even if it duplicates some other Debussy performances you own -- Debussy's music is so subtle that an alternative performance is virtually a new piece of music.

The low price is an attraction, but..........2000-04-28

I bought this 2-CD set because it was onsale..... Unfortunately, I was somewhat disappointed when I played it. The selection itself is good, it contains the complete Etudes, En blanc et noir, and some other not-so-famous works. However, the performance is no match to the scope. You know that it was played in accordance with the composition, but beyond this you don't feel touched by the playing. I am still enchanted by Debussy's unique style, and will still buy CDs of his music, however I might look for something by other performers.
