When Elliott Smith died late in 2003, he took with him one of the unique songwriting gifts of his generation: part folk grandeur, part punk fury, and virtually bottomless in eight short years of solo recordings. Thankfully for that generation, and many to come, he left behind two dozen songs that his Portland, Oregon, producer and pal Larry Crane has crafted into a retrospective celebration of Smith's contribution to music. Mostly house-recorded demos plucked from the fertile three years that followed his 1994 debut Roman Candle (including an early take of "Miss Misery"), there's an eminent clarity to these songs that makes them sound like they were recorded yesterday. A lone acoustic guitar is the general accompaniment to Smith's lamenting wail, his self-deprecating lyrics forever a contrast to the sheer beauty of the melodies. "What are you doing hanging out with me?" he asks in "Whatever (Folk Song in C)," his double-tracked harmonies mocking both Simon and Garfunkel. Along with fragile versions of "Angel in the Snow," "Looking over My Shoulder," and a cover of Big Star's "Thirteen," it's as eternal as anything Smith offered when he was with us, and, as one of several shining moments, makes you forget he ever left. --Scott Holter

Disc One: 01. Angel In The Snow From the Jan/Feb 1995 sessions at Leslie Uppinghouse's home studio that yielded much of the S/T record. Elliott's mix appeared on a CD that came with Mike McGonigal's magazine, Yeti: Volume I.

02. Talking to Mary From the 1995 sessions at Leslie's. This is Elliott's rough mix as the master tape is sadly missing.

03. High Times From the 1995 sessions at Leslie's. An early working title was "Coma Kid". The "drums" are really just doubled snare (with the throw off loose) and ride cymbal.

04. New Monkey From sessions for Either/Or. The "bar" was certainly La Luna in Portland, with "the millions of fans ignoring the bands."

05. Looking Over My Shoulder From sessions for Either/Or. The title of this song is not certain.

06. Going Nowhere From sessions for Either/Or. Due to the limits of eight tracks you rarely get bass guitar on these sessions unless it is integral to the arrangement. One of the most haunting songs in this collection.

07. Riot Coming From the 1995 sessions at Leslie's. Notice the excellent melodic electric guitar part.

08. "All Cleaned Out" This song was tracked at Jackpot! Recording Studio in early 1997. The title is an assumption as there were no notes on or in the tape box.

09. First Timer Tracked at Jackpot! in early 1997. With different lyrics this song has seen life as "Ghost Writer" or "From a Poisoned Well". Elliott recorded the guitars too loud to tape in this collection, hence the occasional "chunk" noise.

10. Go By From sessions for Either/Or. Recorded to 8-track by Elliott in 1996, but then bounced to 2" tape by Rob and Tom where they added overdubs. It was obviously a contender for Either/Or at some point. Early versions of the song were known as "Bye Bye" and "Two Timed".

11. Miss Misery (early version) This song was tracked at Jackpot! in early 1997. It was later recut with lyric changes at Jackpot! and used in the film, Good Will Hunting.

12. Thirteen This Big Star/Alex Chilton song featured often in Elliott's live sets and in the Lucky Three short film by Jem Cohen. This version was recorded by Rob Jones and Elliott Smith in Elliott's Basement in April 1996 and was broadcast June 1, 1996, on Rob's Locals Show on KWVA 88.1 Eugene, OR. This was a simple live take with acoustic guitar and vocals.

Disc Two: 01. Georgia, Georgia From the 1995 sessions at Leslie's. Even though it was older, it was an early contender for the Either/Or running order.

02. Whatever (Folk Song in C) Apparently from the September 1994 sessions at Tony's. Features JJ Gonson's vintage Domino guitar that Elliott favored. Also known under the working title "Hanging Out With Me".

03. Big Decision From the 1995 sessions at Leslie's. Elliott's mix appeared on the CD compilation, A Slice of Lemon.

04. Placeholder From sessions for Either/Or. Sung so softly, but really beautiful.

05. New Disaster From sessions for Either/Or. Vocals and music are from different takes. Vocals are from the reel that provided From a Basement on the Hill with "Last Hour", but the tape reel flange scraping sound (which you can hear on "Last Hour") was even more distracting on this song. Music was from a later instrumental take, with organ and drums but no vocals. This is the only instance on this record where we combined takes in this manner.

06. Seen How Things Are Hard This song was actually recorded on a 4-track cassette. Mixed by Tom and Rob for possible inclusion of Either/Or. Also known under the working title, "Sleigh Bells".

07. Fear City From sessions for Either/Or. Also known as "See My City Dead". Check out the cool melodic organ part and Elliott's grooving drum style.

08. Either/Or From sessions for the album Either/Or. Apparently the song title was appropriated for the album title but not the song. There's also a version of this song with alternate lyrics called "No More".

09. Pretty Mary K (other version) From sessions for Either/Or. This is a completely different song than the Figure 8 track, but seems to feature different words with a parallel theme. An early version was worked up as "Everything's Okay" - note the similar phonetics.

10. Almost Over From sessions for Either/Or. Some of his fastest guitar picking in this collection.

11. See You Later

12. Half Right These are two Heatmiser songs from their third album, Mic City Sons, performed solo in this collection. From the Rob Jones' Locals Show sessions, "See You Later" was released on the Air Check cassette on Rob's label, Jealous Butcher.

Technical Note: Except for the special case of "New Disaster", where independent instrumental and vocal takes were combined, all songs are presented as tracked by Elliott, and every effort was made to check stereo placement, track levels, editing ideas, arrangement ideas and the overall feel that were present in his rough (or released) mixes. In many cases remixing was simply an attempt to make the elements of the song slightly more legible, and in other cases to reduce the background tape hiss. In no way is this album simply a product of the studio in 2006 - it is a collection of songs, any of which could have easily been included on his albums of 1995 or 1997.

In my Alabama high school, our English teacher had us select writers to do a report on. She carefully went down the list announcing a name with a short one-line bio to quickly introduce the writer to the class. My hand shot up to claim Sylvia Plath when I learned she committed suicide in her thirties; I was morbidly intrigued. In preparation for that school report I remember sitting in the library with headphones on listening to a BBC recording Plath made of her poem "Lady Lazarus." I can still hear the tone in her voice when she announces: "I have done it again. One year in every ten I manage it.... And I a smiling woman. I am only thirty. And like the cat I have nine times to die.... The second time I meant To last it out and not come back at all.... Dying Is an art, like everything else. I do it exceptionally well. I do it so it feels like hell. I do it so it feels real. I guess you could say I've a call." At the time I couldn't help but read into every quiver as evidence that Plath knew she was going to take her own life shortly after writing and recording this poem.

I approach Elliott Smith's posthumous release New Moon with the same ears; with song titles like "Going Nowhere," "Whatever," "Almost Over" and "Big Decision," I thought I would hear something in the lyrics that would announce his early death in 2003 (which was first reported as a suicide, though the evidence is still inconclusive on whether or not the two stab wounds were self-inflicted). Epitaph Records released an album with some of his newer material in 2004, but in New Moon, Kill Rock Stars offers a 24-song double-CD with material he recorded between 1994 and 1997. The CDs offer more examples of his songwriting brilliance, using acoustic guitars and simple recordings that are the basis of his earlier work. I never really got into the overly produced stuff he put out after leaving Kill Rock Stars, so this CD offers a great look backwards at a sound that was so familiar to me in college. There are no big surprises on this album, but fans will enjoy these previously un-released tracks.

Elliott Smith was a musical genius no matter what his personal life or his untimely ending were about. He was like no other of our time---if you are a Smith fan, this collection will rock your world ten times over. Extraordinary!

Gone Too Soon.......2007-06-28

I love this collection. It's like two lost albums were found. Some of his most beautiful and haunting material. The world lost a brilliant songwriter when Elliott passed away. His death is as important to me as John Lennon's (if you knew me, you'd know that that means alot in my world); they both could have gone on to contribute so much more to the world. Maybe they're somewhere playing together right now. That would be cool.

I lived in Portland Oregon in the mid 1990's and some of my best memories are the Elliot Smith shows i saw in quaint local bars and clubs, up close and personal, just Elliot and his guitar. I always loved him with his band as well, but to me, the true artist in Elliot Smith always came shining through in his solo shows, when his fantastic songwriting was front and center.

If you are the kind of person who owns every Elliot Smith CD, and considers the Kill Rock Stars records to be his best, then New Moon is a must have. There is no need for me to go through track by track to describe the beauty of this album. The care that went into this release by the people who put it together deserves five stars in itself.

Listening to New Moon made me realize how great Elliot Smith was and how much i miss hearing him and seeing him create new music.

Essential for Elliott fans!!!.......2007-06-27

It totally astounded me. I had no expectations, but would not have been surprised if these tracks were left off Elliott's records because they were somehow sub-standard. They are not. Either/Or could have been a perfect double CD with the inclusion of these tracks. If you are an Elliott fan, you will be exstatic about these archival gems.

Don't waste your brain cells.......2007-06-11

This album (along with The Clash) is on every rock critic's "best albums of all time" list, but Television and the Clash are both on my "1001 Things You Must AVOID Before You Die" list (unfortunately, too late for me, my money, and my brain cells, but at least I can warn you not to make the same mistake).

I really don't know what all the critical acclaim is for. I guess you had to be there at the time or something.
To "new" ears (i.e. someone with no personal-history-related nostalgia) this sounds unimaginative, murky and boring.

I wrote a negative review about this before, but Amazon apparently thought it "offensive" and didn't publish it.
Perhaps what their censorious employee was truly offended by was somebody's ability to think for themselves and not cave in to the critics' "dictatorship of taste". Punk WAS about rebellion not conformity, right?

I say: Save your brain cells (and money) for better things.
You want classic punk? Try Blondie, Ramones, Iggy Pop, Stranglers, Damned and Sex Pistols. They deserve to be remembered.
Television and The Clash deserve a big bonfire.

Timeless high quality rock music.......2007-05-14

When you revisit your musical taste of twenty years back a lot of it doesn't sound that fresh any longer, this album, though, really does, everything from the neurotic sounding vocals to the dry drums and the odd guitar works. Getting the full length version of the underrated "Little Johnny Jewel" helped me make up my mind upgrading my old vinyl.

A genuine 5 star record.......2007-03-22

I don't give out stars lightly. To rate a record 5 stars means to me that its one of the greatest records ever, of which there are perhaps 100. Marquee Moon is one of them.

Television came out of the mid 70's NYC punk scene and may have had a punk attitude and fashion sense, but their music was the antithesis of the 3 chord, 90 second songs of Blondie and The Ramones. The first thing I remember thinking when I first played Marquee Moon was that I've never heard anything quite like this before. The awesome guitar play, the sharp lyrics and Verlaine's high pitched, quavering voice gave them a unique sound.

In later years I noticed some similarities between Television's guitar work and that of Neil Young's, particularly in Young's Cowgirl in the Sand and Down By the River. I have a feeling you will find some Young in Verlaine's and Lloyd's record collections.

The hardest thing about Television is describing their sound to someone. They just didn't sound like anyone else. Though they were never a commercial success, their influences have been heard later in bands like the Strokes, Violent Femmes, Radiohead, Sonic Youth, The Killers and many more.

In an attempt to describe Television's sound to someone, I asked him to picture a band with Neil Young and David Gilmour playing guitar, the Violent Femme's Gordon Gano on vocals and David Bowie writing the lyrics (Hmmmm, maybe someone should write them and see if they could put something together. It would have to be better than Tin Machine).

Marquee Moon is Television's finest album, though I think the follow-up, Adventure, is vastly underrated. What "Freebird" is to southern rock and "Stairway to Heaven" is to progressive rock, that is what the title track, "Marquee Moon" is to alt/punk rock. It's nearly 10 minutes of one of Rock's greatest moments of guitar interplay.

Every song on this album is phenominal. From the opening riffs of "See No Evil" to Verlaine's plaintive wail on the closer, "Torn Curtain" the record is solid.

Marquee Moon will be 30 years old this year. The amazing thing is that the music is still as fresh today as it was when it when released.

In 1977, if you looked back 30 years you saw artists like Guy Lombardo, Bing Crosby, Mills Bros. etc..., all fine artists in their own right, but that was grandma's and grandpa's music and had little relevance in 1977. The fact that Televison is as relevant, if not more so, in 2007 as they were in 1977 is a testament to their greatness.

Television - 'Marquee Moon' (Elektra).......2007-02-01

Review number 57. Originally released in 1977, as this was the first of three 'actual' Television albums. As most fans might tag this debut offering as new wave or punk, it seems to ME that it's more of a guitar rock effort. If anything, this four piece was a major influence on bands to come along after them like Jeff Buckley, U2, Rapture, Echo&the Bunnymen and Sonic Youth. Tunes here I found to show us just what Television was truly capable of were "See No Evil", "Venus", the moving title track "Marquee Moon" and "Torn Curtain". Line-up: Tom Verlane-guitar,keyboards&vocals, Fred Smith-bass&vocals, Richard Lloyd-guitar and Billy Ficca-drums. Likely to draw in fans of Wire, Suicide, XTC and Blondie.

One of the Greatest!.......2007-01-13

I hadn't heard anything about this band before I began to notice Television being repeatedly mentioned as an influence for a variety of other bands; U2, Echo & the Bunnymen, The Strokes, The Killers, etc. I figured that there was probably something good about them if so many other bands liked them, so I listened to clips of a couple of Television's songs online and then I bought their first album, "Marquee Moon".

For originally being only eight tracks (though this edition has an extra song, alternate versions, and an instrumental), "Marquee Moon" manages to pack a lot of complexity into a short period of listening time. Richard Lloyd and Tom Verlaine have an impressive command over their instruments; the guitar. Their style of playing intertwines both lead guitar and rhythm guitar in such a way that it's almost hard to separate the one from the other! The bass is strong, the drums form a good backbeat, Verlaine's poetic style of lyrics and unusual delivery of vocals fit the instrumentation well...what's not to like about this band?!

It's hard to pick favorite tracks, because every song on the album is fantastic. "See No Evil", "Friction", and "Torn Curtain" are tracks I particularly like. A few of the songs are a bit lengthy (the title track, "Marquee Moon", is 10 minutes and 47 seconds), but the whole album flows from song to song so well, it doesn't really seem to matter. It's a brilliant classic!

I've never heard anything else like it.

Very good new age - low key, well engineered........2007-07-04

Deuter has turned out tasteful albums and this is one of his best. New Age music should be unobtrusive and this is. It should stand up to repeated listening and this does. It should be relaxing without being monotonous and this is. Enjoyable. And it passed my sleep test - it put me to sleep last night so that I never heard the end of the album.

Wonderful spa CD.......2007-01-16

My sister asked for a spa-type CD for Christmas, so I went searching for the perfect one for her. I found it with this one. If you've ever been to a spa, had a massage, enjoyed that aromatherapy, had a cup of hot herbal tea...you know that euphoric feeling that comes over you. This is a great way to re-create that at home (or in the car). I don't know how to explain how relaxing this music is, but trust me, you won't be disappointed with this choice.

John Williams' lovely and moving score for the sixth Star Wars film brings thirty years of collaborating on George Lucas' beyond-popular intergalactic franchise to a close. (Is this really the end of Star Wars? Can't Lucas and Williams work together on a prequel to these prequels? Let us hope so, and that Jar Jar Binks is nowhere near it.) As this music accompanies the most exciting Star Wars film in many a moon, the soundtrack itself is more fun, more evil, more nasty and bumpy. Many of the heroic, anthemic themes woven throughout Episode Three: Revenge of the Sith will necessarily be familiar to any fan of the series, from the "Imperial March" to the main theme. It's remarkable how stirring the latter can be, no matter how many times you've heard it, and even for those who do not have all their money invested in S.W. memorabilia. There is a lot of new music here, and the lush, extensive range of both Williams and the London Symphony Orchestra is on display, most notably in the menacing, percolating "General Grievous" and the rousing "New Hope" end theme. --Mike McGonigal

The bonus dvd with this soundtrack was the reason I purchased. I enjoy film soundtracks, and science fiction, but this dvd was a real highlight for me. I got the soundtrack cd out of the local library. The cd was missing from the case, but I found this wonderful dvd instead that I went out to purchase later.

With optional segments of dialog from Ian McDiarmid, this film is a stunning visual and musical overview of the full epic story of episodes I-VI of Star Wars. For those of us who felt that eps. IV-VI fell short of our expectations, this film presents them well as parts of the whole story. The Musical Journey also stands as a summary of the entire SW opus for someone who is not familiar with the Star Wars characters and plot. Highly recommended.

Not one of his bests, but very close.......2007-05-21

The Episode III soundtrack is very good. Not great, but very, very good. You can tell that Williams is getting old, but he still manages to weave together a very memorable score.

My favorite tracks are "Battle of the Heroes," "Anakin's Betrayal," Palpatine's teachings, "Anakin vs. Obi-Wan," and the "Immolation Scene."
The others are very good as well, but these are especially nice. "Battle of the Heroes" is Dual of the Fates for Revenge of the Sith. "Anakin's Betrayal" is a very sad track that is, in my opinion, one of William's most powerful pieces. "Palpatine's Teachings" is really, really neat. It's very dark and moody, a perfect piece for the evil emperor. The only weird thing is the end. "Anakin vs. Obi-Wan" is the action piece that plays during the battles of Anakin and Obi-Wan, and Yoda and the Emperor. Finally, "The Immolation Scene" is another sad piece, even more so than "Anakin's Betrayal."

Although I really like this CD, there are some things that are missing (as usual). First, the whole sequence where the droids are looking for Obi-Wan after he was shot. You see Obi-Wan in his ship with Senator Organa on the Hologram (or whatever it is), and Obi-Wan says that his clones turned on him. That was some pretty awesome music that OF COURSE was left out of the CD. Then there was Dual of the Fates in the movie, but completely absent from the CD. And probably the most annoying was that whole piece of music before Obi-Wan and Anakin fight. It was so touching and sad and I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY LEFT IT OUT! Absolutely amazing. Also, did anyone notice that some little bits were cut out? For example, in Anakin vs. Obi Wan, they cut out about a second or two of choir. What?! What the heck is with that? It's when Anakin is running on the long thing and jumps on the droid on the lava. Also, there was some pretty cool drumming when you see Yoda and the Emperor fighting, and you can see the whole stadium (the big room). There's also drumming in "Enter Lord Vader" that is muted in the soundtrack.

Oh well...if I'm going to collect movie scores, I'm going to have to get used to the fact that in almost all cases there's not going to be every bit of music. I've experienced this in both Pirates of the Caribbean, Jurassic Park I (there was very little left out on this score), and almost everything else. At the moment, I'm just waiting for the 22nd, for the Pirates of the Caribbean 3 soundtrack. It's gonna be amazing.

John Williams' finest work.......2007-04-20

There is little more I can say that hasn't already been said about the soundtrack to Episode 3, especially what Amazon contributor Dan Mohr wrote in his review of the soundtrack on 2/2/2006. His review captured almost all the thoughts, feelings, and emotions I had when I first listened to the soundtrack, and was, IMO, the best review of John Williams' greatest masterpiece.

Having said that, I will say that few soundtracks have ever so perfectly captured the underlying emotional currents of their respective movie; in the case of ROTS, the contemporaneous tragedies of Anakin's fall to the Dark Side, the extermination of the Jedi, and the rise of the oppressive Empire. The listener is confronted with the depth and totality of the evil that has beset the entire galaxy to a degree that the film could not reach in only 2 hours.

Bravo, Dan Mohr, and BRAVO John Williams!

A Great Conclusion to the Prequel Trilogy.......2007-04-07

This is a great work of art. I rank it 4th among Star Wars soundtracks after A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and The Phantom Menace. I had a hard deciding which I thought was better, The Phantom Meance or Revenge of the Sith, but I decided that The Phantom Menace lays the foundation for so much that is in this soundtrack and is thus the more masterful work. But that doesn't mean that this score still isn't great. Every piece is a thrill to listen to and pace never lets up. "Battle of the Hereos" is an amazing piece and the rendition of the "Funeral Theme" from Episoded I captures the film's tragety magnificently. Also I do not think John Williams could have portrayed the Jedi's extinction more perfectly than he did in "Anakin's Betrayal". This is without a doubt the best score of 2005 and one of the best of the decade.

Williams is slumming it.......2007-04-01

Williams's score for Revenge of the Sith is almost entirely overbearing, lacking any emotional subtlety. The music is overcomplicated and even a bit confusing, especially in the tracks that correspond to action sequences in the movie. His overuse of choral tracks and vocals is too bombastic and irritating to be listened to without the explosions and laser blasts of the soundtrack to soften them. (Yes, this music is actually softened by the sounds of warfare.) Worst of all, much of the music has simply been lifted from earlier scores. At times his self-imitation was so blatant that I actually wondered whether the editor who had complied this score had made a mistake and I was listening to The Empire Strikes Back or A New Hope. Also suffers from not including the entire score, in some cases cutting out musical segues in obvious and awkward ways.

Every time a new Secret Garden album comes along, it sounds just that bit more special than the last, and I expect the bubble to break and everyone will be talking about them. However, to date they still seem to be low key and little heard of. Maybe this wonderful album will be the one to turn that around!
The mix of Norwegian classical orchestration with the most beautiful and evocative in Celtic music, makes for a sublimely uplifting and relaxing experience. This is not just chill out music, but music to inspire.
The collaborators, particularly Brian Kennedy and Karen Matheson add a wonderful extra element which lets the music really breathe, and means the listener will never get bored with the CD - you'll be able to listen to this over and over and over again, making this the best value CD you will buy this year.

This music will speak to your soul. I have listened to Secret Garden for years. I watched a movie and the composer's music seemed to just speak to my soul. Listening to this music will totally relax you. I have since ordered all of his music.

"Once In a Red Moon" is a beautiful album, probably my favorite by Secret Garden. I especially love "Greenwaves" and the original version of "You Raise Me Up", but the other ten tracks are also wonderful. This music is beautiful, soothing, and artistically done. Also, it's easy to listen to over and over - I have listened to it so many times, but I'm not tired of it yet.

The Best so Far.......2005-12-04

I have Songs from..., White Stones, and Dawn of a New Century. I love all three, but I believe Once in a Red Moon is the best so far. I was concerned about there being three vocals, but the music is so good that they are written to that they don't distract from the others. I liked the first three releases so much that I was surprised that they could come out with one better, but I believe they did. They have such a beautiful rich sound, that I listen to them over and over and worry about getting tierd of it, but I don't. I can't say that about many artists. If you like the first three releases, don't miss this one.

Very good, just not their best........2004-09-20

Speaking as an avid Secret Garden fan, I must regretfully say that I had some problems with this album. First and foremost: WAY too many vocal tracks. In their first albums, Secret Garden was an almost exclusively instrumental group. It was nice to leave some interpretation up to the listener, and be enveloped in pure musical bliss (especially in the album White Stones). This is not to say that there weren't some memorable tracks in Red Moon, quite to the contrary. I just found myself skipping ahead to the "good" stuff. Also, I found the chord progressions in "You Raise Me Up" to be unmistakenly similar to Bette Midler's "Wind Beneath My Wings." Try listening to the song and insert the other lyrics, you'll laugh. Please don't misunderstand me; this is a very decent album, with some very beautiful moments ("Duo", "Elegie", and "Belonging" to name a few), and I would recommend this album to any fan of the group. This album simply isn't their best.

The Neville Brothers are a New Orleans institution. Their voices glide freely and harmonize into a rich texture. For Yellow Moon, they enlisted the help of producer Daniel Lanois to meld their voices and rhythms with his swampy dreamscapes. The percussion is subtle, the guitars melt into the background, and the voices puncture the placid night sky, as if providing the soundtrack to an old western. Two protest-era Dylan songs ("With God on Our Side" and "The Ballad of Hollis Brown") are recast as modern anthems for spiritual reconciliation. The Sam Cooke classic "A Change is Gonna Come" remains an envied promise, while the original material (the title track; "Sister Rosa," about Rosa Parks) is among their finest. I'm reviewing this CD, but ANYTHING by the Neville Brothers is worth a try. This band defies description - how do you categorize a band that can do just about anything and really can't be pigeonholed. Not a bad song on this CD and the song Yellow Moon is a pure work of art. A real magical, funky, soulful Bayou song. Absolutely love it and I can listen to these guys anytime.

The Neville Brothers have yet to make the album I hunger for. 'Yellow Moon' is close: one of Dan Lanois' finest efforts. And it provides the template, the benchmark for my appetite. But it's a compilation entitled,'The Neville Brothers' from the Master series on Polygram from 1996, that strikes even closer. Doesn't seem to list on Amazon! Perhaps it's the selection, pulling from their most commercially productive, accessible collections, the very finest work. It's not that these albums, in themselves, lack judicious selection. The playing is uniformly excellent, the range and degree of accomplishment in various genres is impressive. Possibly the brothers collective gifts are too sprawling to capture my 'perfect' Nevilles. I have to admit that its Aaron's voice that cuts the band from the ruck of other groups purveying the New Orleans sound. It's always been his divine register that elevated the most mundane texts to the quality of hymns. 'Fearless','Will The Circle Be Unbroken',the Dylan and Cohen covers, are rendered here in ways their authors wouldn't even have prayed for. And supremely, there is Sam Cooke's and my own anthem,'Change Is Gonna Come'. Until Aaaron, only Richard Manuel's take on,'Rock n' Roll Joint' could bring me to the verge of tears. Of course, one could pursue the solo Aaron outings. For me, this has fallen into another syndrome: too much saccharine song selection. In lieu of that elusive Neville's album, for which time is rapidly diminishing, this compilation is as good as it gets.

Jump up and down now.......2005-01-25

This is a typically fine album by these New Orleans legends. It contains a good mix of originals and cover songs. Several of the songs are "message" songs, inluding great covers of Sam Cooke and Bob Dylan songs. Another great cover is the Carter Family's "Will the Circle Be Unbroken". This is an all-around solid album, and fans of the Brothers should enjoy it.

A Delicious New Orleans Gumbo.......2004-12-08

I had the pleasure to get up close and person with Aaron Neville when he sang for us at a New Orleans Navy base. Believe me it's overwhelming! This beautiful, angelic voice comes from a very BIG, muscular man. The Neville brothers have always been one of my favorite groups. This is one talented family. I got this CD recently when I heard it being played at a Barnes & Noble store. I could hardly keep my feel still when I heard "Yellow Moon," and bought the CD immediately. Terrific harmony, vocals and music that are an absolute joy. I only have one problem...I can't play it when I'm driving! I just get too caught up in it when I hear "Yellow Moon," because my feet want to go. Each selection has New Orleans spice, like a delicious gumbo.

Her luscious alto has the depth and texture of a great tenor saxophonist, but Cassandra Wilson's defining asset is a postmodern song sense that enables her to surf through Son House, Neil Young, Johnny Mercer, Billie Holiday, and (gasp!) the Monkees in pursuit of strong songs that can provide that instrument with a canvas. Her second Blue Note album extends Wilson's seductive pilgrimage beyond the conventions of jazz repertoire and accompaniment, yet it's her instincts as a jazz singer that inform these brilliant readings. The settings again step away from traditional small group jazz (for starters, there's no piano) to evoke the emotional core of these songs. "Love Is Blindness", I love that moody song! I love the lyrics. I love the musicianship. Most of all I love Cassandra's haunting voice. This is my favorite song on "New Moon Daughter".

"Blue Light Til Dawn" is Cassandra's most acclaimed CD but "New Moon Daugher" is equally as good. I love them both dearly but "New Moon Daughter" is still my favorite. The material on this CD is just so damn strong. Plus it's got "Love Is Blindness" on it. Like I said before, I LOVE that song!

Quiet, yet fiery inspiration from one of today's greats.......2004-05-14

This recording would probably be worth it for nothing more than Wilson's reimagining of "Last Train to Clarksville," the 1966 hit written for the Monkees by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart. The sassy Monkees version was a huge success, but Wilson, with the help of a superb arrangement and musicians, mines the song's anxiety and doubt in a completely different way, but just as mesmerizing.

Other high points on this enormously well-conceived disc are a gorgeous version of Hank Williams' "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," a summery, engaging "Skylark" (yes, Hoagy Charmichael) and U2's "Love is Blindness," an aching ballad that Wilson imbues with overwhelming regret. And just the right choice to end is Neil Young's glowing "Harvest Moon," gently fading out in a haze of shimmering guitar work. Wilson's outstanding musicians -- creative, enthusiastic, yet never overpowering -- must share some of the credit for the success here.

If you go for Wilson's ethereal yet husky voice, not to mention her marvelous taste in choosing and reworking material, this recording shows her at her most luminous. Arguably her best to date, and one of the great jazz vocal recordings of the 1990's.

ONE INCREDIBLE JAZZ SINGER.......2003-04-23

Wilson is truly amazing, but not so much for her voice by itself, but the way she transforms non Jazz material no one ever would have dreamed of doing. She doesn't just pull it off. She makes seem as natural as breathing. I can't think of anyone else who could have taken a piece of mid 60's cheese like The Monkees "Last Train To Clarksville" and transform it into a really swinging Jazz number. Her reading of U2's "Love Is Blindness" is beautiful as well as making songs by Hank Williams and Neil Young all her own. There are also a a couple of standard
Jazz numbers here and she's no slouch as a writer. Case in point: "Solomon Sang". There's also her arrrangements which feature a Joni Mithchell style of "Whack Tuning" as it's refered to in the liner notes, as well as some very diverse instrumentation. It might take you a few listens to really get into, but most great music does and this is without a doubt, great!!!!

With a series of terrific albums, Cassandra Wilson has established herself as one of the day's great vocalists and, in branching out from jazz into blues and folk and pop, paved the way for genre-crossing stars including Norah Jones. But the Mississippi native has rarely sounded as relaxed or winning as she does on "Thunderbird," which teams her with the stalwart O Brother Where Art Thou? producer T Bone Burnett. Funky, sultry, bluesy, sexy, mellow, haunting, hypnotic, cool...this CD has it all and then some. From the opening beats of Go To Mexico to the final chords of Tarot, this is an incredibly hot disc. Wilson has certainly hooked me with her absolutely gorgeous vocals, but the music on this CD is so darn good, it doesn't make any sense. This is not your usual Cassandra and if you're looking for something different from her from a purely musical standpoint, then this is it.

Too Many Pop Covers.......2007-03-11

Simply, this isn't one of Cassandra's best. Her last 2-3 cd's have relied too much on pop covers of various merit which really diminishes the effectiveness of one of the most marvellous voices in jazz-blues. I have seen her live several times and she outstanding as a performer and unequalled in the jazz-blues genre, but straying so far (for a wider commercial appeal?) from her blues roots only serves to murk her vocal and musical identity. My fear is this wonderful vocalist will end up in the same situation as Etta James who abandoned her Texas blues roots for a not very convincing or engaging party rock-blues repertoire.

I really love this new album! It is different from her usual style but it's still Cassandra all the same. I love the way her smoky voice rides and intertwines with the deep base and percussions.Especially tracks like "Closer to You", "It would Be So Easy", "Poet" and "Strike a Match". You have a great introduction to her new style with "Go to Mexico" and of course her classic "bluesy" ballad styles with "Easy Rider" and "Red River Valley". My husband who had never heard of her can't get enough of this new album!
The old adage rings true...Like fine wine, she get's better with age!

Ol' Sweet Baby James is known for his gentle coo-ing about life's little joys and tragedies (he's seen fire *and* he's seen rain) and for surrounding himself with the best studio musicians money can buy. Steve Jordan and Steve Gadd on drums ensure the rhythm is solid and guitarist Danny Kortchmar and saxophonist Michael Brecker are top flight cats who keep things in place. Taylor himself is in fine form, penning an immediate audience favorite, "Copperline," and getting playful with Sam Cooke's hit, "Everybody Loves to Cha Cha Cha," which initially seems incongruous but over time makes sense as more blue shirt soul from Martha's Vineyard's favorite boy. --Rob O'Connor

One Great Song After Another--A Top Album.......2007-06-27

From "Copperline," which is a catchy tune which lyrics recall an earlier time in the singer's life "down on Copperline," to the politically critical message of "Slap Leather," to the sad and beautiful "Down In the Hole," to the tender and morally reflective "The Frozen Man," to the advice of "Brother Oh Brother," to the gentle, yearning for true love in "The River is Wide," to every other song therein, "New Moonshine" is a top album that will not disappoint old and new fans of Mr. Taylor. Highly recommended.

My favourite song on this album is "Frozen Man." If you like JT, then you should definitely have this in your collection. Every album is like a slice of the man's life -- reflecting where he was at the time, and the issues he faced that we all eventually face.

The awesome thing about JT is his brilliance in allowing the listener to enjoy his music on a light, bright, joyful level. But since music - great music like this - tells the truth (musically & lyrically as Art), JT is also there for those who want to seek out life's meaning with their soul. And this is precisely what makes this Audio CD a masterpiece. "Frozen Man" is a good example. Yeah, he could be talking about some poor guy dug up like they do from time to time. But he also challenges us about letting oneself go to seed spiritually by becoming 'dead' to love, life - everything around us. "The River Is Wide" (Traditional) is another amazing track. Too few artists/musicians, in my humble opinion, are willing to take on classics like this one and render it as fresh as today. You'll love this entire Audio CD - because quite simply - JT does it all.

JT's Intro to the 90s.......2005-03-21

Taylor entered the 1990s with his first album to be limited to CD and cassette tape releases (no vinyl LP): "New Moon Shine". I have to admit that upon receiving this album, I was under the impression that the entire disc as a whole album was on the weak side, reading several negative reviews. I knew the songs "Copperline", "Shed A Little Light" and "The Frozen Man" from the "Pull Over" DVD concert, but didn't have any other knowledge beyond those tracks. Nothing really caught my attention on the first listen, but on subsequent times through, it slowly grew to become my favorite start-to-finish album by JT.

"New Moon Shine" continues the sound of "World Music" (I believe that's what they call it) for the majority of the tracks. JT started to use this style of music on "That's Why I'm Here" and again on "Never Die Young". As good as those two recordings are I believe he perfected the sound of the genre on this disk.

First comes the nostalgic "Copperline", which will make you reminisce about your childhood with a good felling. The singer returns to his old home at the end of the song to find it's just not the same anymore, which is something many of us can relate to. Next we have "Down in the Hole", which is an analogy about how loosing a love can make you feel insignificant. "(I've Got to) Stop Thinkin' 'Bout That" is an upbeat song that is also about a lost love, and the singer seems to be driving himself crazy trying to forget his ex. The fourth track ("Shed a Little Light") is a tribute to Martin Luther King Jr., and carries a great message. After that comes a song with a unique concept: "The Frozen Man". The lyrics tell us a story about a man who was lost at sea many years ago and became frozen in the water. We are told of his discovery and how he is able to walk to earth years ahead of his time. The mood is broken with a political rocker, "Slap Leather". After that comes a buried treasure and a highlight to the album; "Like Everyone She Knows" begins as a song about a girl loosing self confidence, but soon evolves into a great message: No matter what anyone tells you, never give up on a love. "One More Go Round" may indeed be filler, but it's by no means a bad track and doesn't hurt the album. Next comes a Sam Cooke cover "Everybody Loves to Cha Cha", which deals with a dilemma: The singer's date does not know the dance, and that's all that's being played at the event. The situation is resolved with him teaching her the dance, and she ends up performing it better. "Native Son" is another contender for the best track on the disc. The song deals with the relief of a war ending and the returning to the comforts of home after a long battle. The disc finishes out with "Oh Brother", followed by another obscure JT gem: "The Water is Wide", which is an arrangement of a traditional song. It's a great song to just close your eyes and indulge in the great sound, and one of JT's best album finales.

The album cover is one of JT's most unique. Lyrics and band credits are also included with several more photos on a horizontal foldout. This is the original CD release from 1991, as the majority of the album was digitally recorded, so a re-master probably isn't necessary.

This album is probably not the right intro to JT's music. Perhaps you should go with "Sweet Baby James", "Mud Slide Slim" or a greatest hits compilation first. If you already have prior knowledge of JT's work and are satisfied, I strongly recommend the album that is "New Moon Shine".

Let the gentle sounds of André Rieu's slippery fiddle and fur-tipped orchestra lull you with classical music's most memorable soothers, from "O Mio Babbino Caro" and "Plasir D'Amour" to the largo from Dvorák's New World Symphony and Nino Rota's "A Time for Us," which opens and closes the collection. Decent playing, lousy arrangements.......2005-11-11

Well, apparently I'm in the minority, but I found this CD disappointing. I bought it because I fell in love with "Song to the Moon" when I heard it on the radio, but this track and possibly the "Londonderry Air" are the only ones worth listening to. Although the melodies chosen for this album are indeed beautiful, the arrangements (Rieu's own) are poorly done. I would much more highly recommend Joshua Bell's Romance of the Violin, which has a similar theme, albeit restricted to classical tunes.

Forget the hype, this is great music.......2005-08-04

Try not to think about the cheesy "Andre Rieu in Tuscany" PBS special. This is a very pleasing program of selections of great romantic melodies, beautifully arranged. Few people are going to purchase a CD of Dvorak's Rusalka just to hear "Song to the Moon" so this is the place to hear it. And it's even better on Rieu's violin than in the original vocal version. Rieu plays perfectly in tune (not always easy in the higher registers of the violin) and has exquisite phrasing that brings out the musicality of even the most over-recorded selections.

Rhieu's arrangements (with Jo Huijts) have hints of "beautiful music" (think Ray Coniff) but only hints, and the result is very tasteful. For example, the piano obligato under the strings on "O mio babbino caro" makes you wish that Puccini had thought of that.

This is a wonderful album to listen to while relaxing and would make a great gift for someone who appreciates classical music but doesn't have specific preferences.

Music That Will Touch Your Heart.......2004-12-05

This one is one of my favorites of Andre Rieu. It's very romantic. It reminded me of my honeymoon in Vienna. I like to play it at home a lot. It lifts the spirit and touches the heart. Made me cry one time.
