Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Sultry-voiced Diop merges the acoustic African sounds of artists like Lokua Kanza (who appears on No Sant) and Henri Dikongue with the Western pop leanings of Youssou N'Dour. As such he is a world troubadour who just happens to be African, and fittingly he has assembled an eclectic global coterie of artists on this diverse collection of well-crafted and extremely musical songs. Consequently you will hear elements as diverse as Japanese opera vocals and Bretonese cornemuse (bagpipes) in the jazzy pop arrangements of his Senegal-based songs. Carefully sequenced, these 12 tracks range between folksy intimacy and full-on stadium anthems, all of them slickly produced and poised to position the work of this eloquent artist in any cosmopolitan record collection. --Derek Rath

This is an astonishing collection of works - or parts of works - by Mozart that covers almost every aspect of his creative output: symphonic, religious music, concerti (for piano, horn, violin, clarinet, flute), chamber music, serenades (for strings; winds), a couple of opera overtures and more. Those who know and love Mozart's music will not need this, but it's a great introduction, a great overview. The selections are well-chosen and interestingly organized, with familiar pieces splrinkled among some not-so well known. A good primer. --Robert Levine

1 out of 5 stars How can you go wrong with Mozart?...Buy this and find out........2007-05-13

I was extraordinarely ignorant when I purchased this recording. I thought,"WOW!! Look at all the music you get in this CD set. The price cannot be beat!" When I received the CD, I discovered that you don't really get any music at all. This is a great sample CD, and should be bought by a person brand new to classical music. However, if you have any experience with classical music, you will want to pass on this CD.

Each of the pieces are hacked apart to the point of it being comical. It's interesting to listen to the greatest music in the world, only to have the development cut. All of a sudden I was thrust into a new key, I thought my ears were going crazy. Perhaps an effort by a decent high school orchestra, but this music is not up to snuff with any other recording.

Do yourself a favor and go out and purchase real recordings of Mozart, and not watered down stereotypes.

This is a good CD if you like Mozart's music. It is not the best CD I ever purchased. It is nice to listen to it in the morning before I go to work. And I sometimes listen to it in the evening before I go to bed. It is relaxing and soothing. I am not a music major or therapist. This is the best review I can write. Mary Agnes Cross

This sampler album of excerpts from seven other Anonymous 4 releases is a good introduction for anyone who is unacquainted with the A4's startlingly pure singing and virtually celestial blend. But if you fall under the spell of this outstanding a capella quartet, the present disc will become extraneous because you'll want to own the complete recordings from which it's drawn. If you prefer complete works to samplers, try taking the plunge with "An English Ladymass" or "On Yoolis Night." --Sarah Bryan Miller

Four female voices have never blended together so perfectly and beautifully as do those of the 'Anonymous 4.' Their CD titled, 'Portrait' contains a selection of tracks from seven other previous CD's, kind of a "Best Of" you might say.

If angels ever came down from heaven to record a CD this is what they would sound like.

Harmonious, Celestial, Purifying and Eternal.

5 out of 5 stars another exquisite performance.......2006-02-27

This amazing quartette is so talented. The Christmas cd reminds me of Christmas 50 years ago in rural England where I grew up. It contains the only rendition of The Holly and the Ivy I have heard that actually does the carol justice.

5 out of 5 stars Anonymous, but in no way generic.......2001-02-04

I learned about this quartet though a review in Stereophile magazine. Although they don't publish a lot of reviews, I've had exceptionally good luck with their past picks and have been able to branch out successfully in new musical directions as a result.

These four women are virtuoso female vocalists, hauntingly pure of voice. They perform music from centuries ago in the same type of setting that it was originally performed in, with stunning results. I'm generally not one for "religious" material (this is the first recording of this nature I've ever bought), but this music goes so far back in time that it sounds more primal than Christian overall.

A refreshing change when you're in the right mood, and something that can relax even you type A personalities out there (and you *know* who you are :) , I can suggest this one without reserve. You'll be adding a nice, quiet corner to your collection, and you'll probably wind up visiting it more than you ever imagined.

This was a pleasure to listen to. The music chosen for the recording brings out the soulful cello sound played so wonderfully by Sara Sant'Ambrogio, and the piano part played so skillfully by Anyssa Neumann rounds it all out. It puts you in another dreamy world!

Congratulations to everyone that played a play on this CD. The time and effort is well worth it shows. Continued good look in everything that each and every one of you chooses to do.

5 out of 5 stars First Loves.......2004-09-25

This newly released CD is a winner! As Grammy-winning cellist Sara Sant'Ambrogio writes, she selected those pieces that first made her fall in love with the voice of the cello, and she plays them with tenderness, passion, mastery, and wistfulness, stirring the listeners' imagination and taking us back to a simpler time. In addition to the old favorites, such as Albinoni's "Adagio" and Saint-Saens "The Swan," she bridges the centuries with Gershwin's Summertime and two contemporary compositions by Paul Cantelon, melding the textures into a cohesive yet varied tapestry of music. The piano accompaniment, played skillfully by the rising pianist Anyssa Neumann, gently sustains the rich strains of the cello, providing a perfect balance of voices. Listen to this recording with your eyes closed and let your memory and the exquisite artistry of these two young musicians take you back to your first loves.

5 out of 5 stars Lush 19th and 20th century compositions.......2007-04-11

I purchased this album (first on cassette then on CD) at the beginning of my interest in classical music. This collection is uniformly dramatic and, with one exception, unforgetable.

Vaughn Williams' Fantasia is a beautiful, sweeping rush of of sound and silence. It is by far the longest track on the album, and not something to put on for gentle background music, as the piece moves from piano to forte.

Ironically, Satie's two pieces (written for piano, arranged for strings by Debussey) are described as "wallpaper music", in that they are meant to be heard as much as wallpaper is meant to be seen. Still, the first of the two Gymnopedie is sweet and sad, and the second is a little more sophisticated and aware. Note: I do think that the tracks are mislabeled on the CD; I checked the sheet music for Gymnopedies #1 and #3, and they did not correspond to the numbers on this albumn.

Despite its use in movies, I had never heard Barber's Adagio for Strings until this album, and it brought me to tears. I will argue to anyone who cares to listen that this is the finest recording (at least, that I have yet encountered). It is slightly less adagio than many, but other recordings do not have the courage to push forward the dissonance that drives the piece. When it builds and builds to the climax, and then holds there, it rips your heart out. Slatkin is a fantastic showman, and gets every bit of the drama out of this piece. Absolutely love it.

Faure's Pavenne is a nice antidote to the operatic emotion of the Adagio. A little cynical, a little jaded, but still there is beauty in the world.

Unfortunately for me, the "Danny Boy" interpritation sticks out like a particularly sore thumb. While every piece on this CD is emotional, this one feels manipulative. It doesn't have the complexity of any of the previous pieces. More than any of the others, it sounds like a movie score, written and performed to punch up the emotion of a scene. Not surprisingly, I usually skip this one.

5 out of 5 stars A Desert Island Disc.......2007-04-11

There are several fine orchestral versions of the Satie's Gymnopédie. One of my favorite collections is by Slatkin's,in beatiful and luminous Telarc sound. It has other meditative pieces to contemplate as well: Vaughan Williams's famous Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis; Barber's Adagio for Strings (a tear-jerker used in the movie "Platoon"); and a version of "Danny Boy" that you won't easily forget. This is one of those discs you keep in your car for traffic jams.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Listen.......2006-02-22

Upon a first listen, I was impressed with the orchestra's ability to feel the music so well. The Vaughn Williams is exceptional, the beginning seems to float in out of a mist and Slatkin takes great care to make sure the work dosen't rush. The reason for four stars and not five is because of the "Adagio". This work has great dynamic contrast, but it feels rushed. The strings, especially at the climax, make the work sound overdramatic. The same can be said for the "Irish Tune."
Telarc's usually brilliant sound lies flat and lifeless, and too quiet for playback volume.

4 out of 5 stars A personal must-have.......2005-08-31

While I agree with the comments made by Maxwell Johnson regarding the Satie and Barber performances on this CD, I cannot do without this version of Vaughan Williams's Fantasia. It is by far the finest, most thoughtful and most moving rendition I've heard. Sure, the recording quality could be better. However, I have three other better quality recordings of this piece, and the performances are all unlistenable after having my discovery this particular one. I suspect to someone who is more accustomed to hearing a conductor rush through this piece, usually out of fear it'll come across ponderous and tedious, this performance may sound sluggish. But this rendition is truly more fitting for Vaughan Wiilliams, who can be a bit more indulgent for more impatient listeners, and also for Thomas Tallis, whose brilliant theme deserves to be relished thoroughly, istead of merely glanced at in passing on a hurried way to the end.

The other thing is I find the woodwind performance on the Faure to be excellant, and seeing this piece is usually recorded as the choral version, thus the voices obscure Faure's gorgeous woodwind orchestration, this is a rare delight.

I am happy this CD is still available, despite it's drawbacks. While I doubt I'll ever like the Satie pieces on this (they are rather lifeless), I can enjoy the Barber despite the performance's flaws (it's an overrated piece anyhow). Regardless, I just consider those extra tracks to the Vaughan Williams and Faure, which make this CD worth my money.

3 out of 5 stars A pleasant but not great recording.......2002-01-17

In contrast to other Amazon reviewers, I found this CD less than completely satisfying. A few very brief observations:

1. Significant pitch problems can be heard in the strings on the Barber Adagio. Passages that should shimmer instead grate on the ears.

2. The Satie selections are particularly flat and lifeless, as though Mr. Slatkin felt the need to create a "soothing" sound rather than one that adequately captures the playful smile always peeking out of Satie's music.

3. The gorgeous harmonies and inner passages in the Grainger Tune from County Derry were given short shrift in favor of swoopy dynamics.

4. Throughout the disc the playing seemed tentative, in some instances almost hesitant.

In summary, a CD that can provide very pleasant background music but doesn't stand the test of close, critical listening.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Invigorating, Smooth, Sultry, Overall a Great Buy!!.......2003-09-11

My introduction to the master, Wasis Diop, was through the movie "Th Thomas Crown Affair" (one of my fav movies!) in which one the soundtracks was by Mr.Diop. Originally from Senegal (Senegalese music is very distinct from sounds of other parts of Africa!), now settled in France, "No Sant" was his first album, "Toxu" being the second.

In this album my favorites:
*"No Sant" is absolutely fantastic, fittingly the album is also named after, supported by the amazing vocals of Lena Figabe.
*Chorus from "Di Na wo" is amazing...
*"African Dream", which is performed with Lena Figabe too..
*"Le Voyaguer" brings out Wasis's talent...truly!

Overall, if you are into African/World music, then PICK THIS UP! Worth every dollar spent, you wont go wrong!

Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Need another CD Player.......2002-11-07

This is a very good artistic work. I must have looked in 10 music stores for this on CD-ROM before I got lucky and found one. Although I listen to all types of music, I cannot seem to get this one out of my CD player as I want to hear this again before playing something else. This is one of those works that you can go back to over and over again without getting tired of it. I've written alot of good software while listening to Wasis Diop.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite African Album.......1998-09-26

I instantly fell in love with this album when I first heard it. It's innovative music that draws from deep African roots music and a fresh variety of World sounds--even bagpipes--for a contemporary pop fusion that is scrumptious and memorable. I have a love affair with African music, and this album is at the top of my very long list.

4 out of 5 stars yet another great Savall sampler.......2005-12-20

Having purchased hundreds of dollars worth of Savall's CD's, I can say I too am a devoted fan of his. This is a great sampler of his more recent work and contains a huge variety of music. The individual pieces sound great and, as usual, the tone quality and spirit of his ensembles are perfect. If you are looking for a nice album of "early music," are interested in checking out Jordi Savall's work, or are already a Savall fan looking for a nice album to relax to, this inexpensive compilation is for you. It also comes with a color catalog of Alia Vox's current offerings.

5 out of 5 stars WOW - my two year old started doing ballet while listening.......2005-06-28

Which is, of course, another story. But she liked the music. My wife insisted I not sell our copy (which I had no intention of doing). I even played it very loud and no one minded!

I am a Jordi Savall fan, so I saw this sampler of his stuff for such a great price and bought it. It has a nice variety - beautiful vocals, mostly nice instrumental pieces, but all very nice. Even the one (?) opera sounding piece was nice (and I don't like opera).

Anyway - for the price how can you go wrong? Read some of Jordi's other reviews and then jump on it! (Just my opinion)

The music of William Bolcom (b. 1928) is characterized by his staunch refusal to obey any rules. He's a cross between Frank Zappa and Edgar Varese. Session 1 (1965) is a loose free-for-all that has at its core a strict 12-tone base. It sounds like several instrumentalists tuning their instruments and percussionists beating away at their drums. It's almost entirely a work of abstract "colors." Symphony 4 (1987) has some elements of serialism, but Bolcom mixes into it a subtle tonality, particularly in the second movement which centers around the poem "The Rose" by Theodore Roethke. This music does have its rewards. --Paul Cook

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The clearest delivery of a text.......2000-03-29

William Bolcom's fourth Symphony is a wonderful piece of music. It is huge, diverse and wonderfully focused. The most notable thing about it is the setting of the text of Roethke's poem "The Rose", a description of a mystical experience of the integration of memory, present experience and maybe the whole universe. Bolcom's music is an extension of the poem, much more than just a setting. When one of the major climaxes comes on the word roses it is like experiencing a hot house in full bloom (I've worked in a rose house and know the experience at first hand.) Joan Morris' singing is a miracle of clarity and delivery. Her work here should be required listening for anyone speaking or singing a text.

Session 1 is a fairly early work, an intersection between jazz and twelve tone (more or less) writing. I liked it.
