About the Artist
The Volunteers is South Florida's only original Celtic rock band. In their electric rock'n'roll stage-show, they are a full-throttle, guitar-driven, runaway locomotive. As Miami's New Times has put it: "From their first bottle-rattling gig ... it's been no secret that the Vols are a great party band ... Put this crew and free-flowing alcohol in a club setting and you never know what will happen next ... This is a band capable of raising the roof in the best Celtic tradition."

In their kinder, gentler, acoustic show, seated on stage comfortably around a whisky-bottle-topped table, they lay down the electric guitars and drums in favor of the fiddle and the penny whistle, with lyrics and vocal harmonies to the fore. This is the best way to hear and enjoy the stories in what the band calls: "the 19th Century Scots-Irish folk songs that we wrote last week."

The Volunteers have played every original music venue in Miami including the late, great Stephen Talkhouse on South Beach (where they shared bills with the Battlefield Band from Scotland and world-famous bluegrass fiddler, Vassar Clemens). The Volunteers have raucous nights to their credit at pubs as diverse as Molly Malone's in North Miami and The Globe in Coral Gables. They regularly rock the packed-out upstairs main stage at Tobacco Road and sooth a folkie audience, unplugged, live, on National Public Radio, WLRN 91.3.

His sound? Barbed wire lyrics wrapped around whisky and gravel vocals. Hints of Springsteen, Earle and Lucinda Williams abound. But it's the wallop of soul in his passionate vocals and the earthy groove of his melodies that give Picott his own distinct sound.

He's just beginning to hit his stride as a writer; Slaid Cleaves took their co-write "Broke Down" to No.1 on the Americana charts. He's a narrative storyteller tapped into the trials and tribulations of the working class. He intuitively understands heartache, desperation, joy and small hopes (small, not inconsequential) ignore class boundaries. Incredible Variety.......2000-10-27

This CD really can't be seen as a "best of" album, because I think Norman has too many great pieces to fit on one CD, but what it can be seen as is an incredible collaboration of his many years of hard work. This CD consists of selections from his various CDs with groups/ individuals like Helicon (a Baltimore based trio), The Baltimore Consort, Alasdair Fraser, Camerata Bariloche, Pete Sutherland, Custer LaRue, and the list goes on. If these names don't mean anything to you, just trust me that they are all magnificent musicians who are well known on the international circuit. Although I own the CDs that more than 60% of these songs came from, there are a collection of previously unreleased tracks on this album that keep me coming back for more. My favorite tracks are 5-8, 11-14, and 15. Track 5 stands alone as what I consider the greatest waltz I've ever heard. Billy Comiskey is incredible on the accordian, and the Quebecois blend is something so amazing that it cannot be described in words. Tracks 6-8 are a series of reels from Norman's "The Beauty of the North" CD, and they simply make you feel good all over. Tracks 11-14 are a series of American tunes from Norman's "The Man With the Wooden Flute" album, and are a wonderful blend of upbeat little tunes. Track 15 is the first song of Norman's that I can specifically remember falling in love with. Again, I can't really describe why it's so incredible, but take my word for it, and buy this album, not just for the specific tracks that I mentioned, but for the entire experience that Norman creates. It's truly magnificent!

Several Nice Melodies Here for those Who Enjoy 19th Century Song.......2006-04-02

The theme of this album is songs of social consciousness, which means that the compiler was looking for historical relevence, rather than overall good tunes. But there are at least two songs here that any fan of the 19th century popular song must have: "The Song of the Red Man," by Henry Clay Work, and "The Hand that Holds the Bread" by Root. Work's piece is simple, but driving and compelling, like all his best songs. The song by Root is just another fine, rousing melody by this exellent pop composer. Performance-wise, the soloists are a mixed bag, but they are sincere, and the chorus is superb throughout.

I bought this CD out of curiosity after listening to a sample on Amazon.
A bunch of surfers from Miami trying to play Celtic music.
...You gotta be joking!
Well..How wrong can one be! This is a positive fresh slant to
very old Irish songs.Believe me,I've heard lots of versions of
the songs included here.This CD is up with the best of them.
The Volunteers are a seven piece band with three female members,and boy,do they know how to rock...on drums,tin whistle and fiddle.I don't have a favourite on the CD.They are all equally as strong as each other.
You will be pleased with you purchase.

Bought CD after hearing about it on radio. Highly recommended. Ace players: harmonica, tinwhistle, fiddle, blues guitar. Trad Irish tunes, but not like you're used to hearing them -- kicked up a notch with rough blues/rock feel. Lead singer shreds vocal cords, not "Danny Boy" crooner. Kick-a** drummer. Band rocks. Would like to hear more albums by them.

Their first album was good enough for me to risk buying this one 'unheard'. I played this CD at least half a dozen times back to back before giving it a rest. If you like this Celtic/Rock thing you'll not tire of this album. This band is obviously about one thing:Fun. There are even somebody's kids on this CD putting the boot in....it's fun and really fine hard music. Clearly a labor of love.I'll definitly be buying their next CD. Edmund, Orlando.

I grabbed this CD after I happened upon The Volunteers when on holiday in Miami from England. Their St Patrick's Day bash was superb. The talent of the individual members of the band is obvious. The combination is awesome. The Celtic influence, genuine as it is, comes through with passion. This CD is a rare and wonderful find. Buy it now and enjoy!

Under the leadership of Mr. Milne's musty growl, the Volunteers really do carry us through a raucous litany of Whiskey, Love & Disaster. There is pain, there is valor, there is stupidity and much up-the-skirts lusting at stray "colleens"- all from a time and place we never did know. The journey rocks, wails, and mourns by turn. Every bit honest in its imperfections, and in the utter perfection of its heart. The kickass talent of all the players don't hurt neither. From track one thru ten, I've not found a one to skip. And while I've only just cycled WL&D into my road mix, I'm hooked bad - and my steering wheel's the worse for wear from the beating. Hell, just yesterday I almost found myself saying "ne'er" to a friend. Get your hands on this Vols disc, right now. It'll make you want to rise up, take on the world, then fall down drunk in the lap of a tavern lass later that eve. Grinning.
