5 out of 5 stars you have to see live.......2006-06-07

The Saw Doctors are a wonderful mix of rock and celtic tradition. This album truly catches their live performance. While they will never be as polished as U2, their shows are just as entertaining, and can be described by one word FUN.

3 out of 5 stars A Good Listen, But Don't Start With This One.......2004-03-25

The Saw Doctors are one of the best and most underrated bands in business today, one of the few remaining practitioners of the mainstream pop/rock tradition that goes back to the Beatles and the Beach Boys, but with a distinctively Irish sound and varied influences ranging from Irish folk music (most obvious here on Joyce Country Ceili Band and Hay Wrap) to reggae (on display here with I'll Be On My Way). There's really no good reason why these guys aren't international superstars, and if anything, they're even better live.

That being said, while this CD is a fun listen if you've already got their studio CDs and have heard them in concert, I wouldn't recommend this as an introduction to the band or its live sound. The sound quality is very raw and muffled, so nearly nothing sounds as good as either the studio versions or hearing them live. Davy Carton's voice definitely sounds better in the studio.

I'd also quibble a bit with the song selections; the album is heavy on selections from their classic compilation "Sing a Powerful Song," but it leaves off the hip-hop-flavored hard-rocker Villains, which is the one Saw Doctors song that sounds most improved in concert, as well as Galway and Mayo, the live uptempo version of which (with Leo's 'football' monologue) is quite different from the original and thus should have had priority on a live CD. (You can also debate the exclusion of the chills-inspiring World of Good and the rollicking live favorites Tommy K - also much more upbeat than the studio version - and Do Ya Wanna Play My Guitar).

Live in Galway is a good, fun listen; it does capture the band's gleeful rapport with the crowd, the revised, guitar-heavy versions of Green and Red of Mayo and I Useta Lover, and the bedlam of the set-closing Hay Wrap. But if you're just starting off with the Saw Doctors, I'd recommend Sing a Powerful Song, with Songs from Sun Street and Play it Again Sham! also essential.

5 out of 5 stars The Docs At Their Best!!.......2004-03-15

Finally, we get to hear the Saw Doctors the way they need to be experienced....LIVE! A great collection of Saw Doc songs, all done with the rough edge that makes this group so great. We have been asking for a Live CD for a long time, and boy have they delivered! Note: You also should get the "Live in Galway" DVD to SEE the lads. And the fact that they recorded this show on 7/30/03 ,(my birthday) makes it more special to me.

5 out of 5 stars Joyous Music That Works Either Way, for Listening or for Dancing.......2006-02-07

Sharon Shannon and her group play updated version of standard Irish folk music that will win over the stoniest heart (although my wife's cousin Ruth didn't like her --she said it's "monotonous"). The heart of the music is Shannon's virtuosity on several instruments --accordion, hammered dulcimer, fiddle-- but the Woodchoppers create a propulsive rhythmic groove, regardless of tempo, that draws in the listener.

Living in central California, until two years ago my image of "Celtic music" was a watered down New Age, pallid music that relied on dulcimer and harp and featured vocalists who sound like Joan Baez with weak lungs. Then we rented a cabin in county Kerry, in the southwesternmost tip of Ireland, and I got to hear heavy doses of contemporary Irish popular music --and fell in love with it. I came out a convert -- to Kila, Lunasa, Christie Moore (long may he live!), Mary Black.

And also to Sharon Shannon and her Woodchoppers. No one plays accordion better than Sharon does and the Woodchoppers create unpretentious, joyous music that disguises the virtuosity in their playing of it. I don't know quite how to categorize this record --it's traditional and modern at the same time. Whatever it is, it's very good.

5 out of 5 stars Live with the Woodchoppers.......2003-06-08

The Woodchoppers are: Lloyd Byrne on drums, Ronnie O'Flynn, bass; Jim Murray, guitar; Liz Kane, fiddle; Yvonne Kane, fiddle; Mary Shannon (Sharon's sister) on mandolin, banjo, and fiddle; and Sharon Shannon, accordion (of course), fiddle, and whistle. From beginning to end, 14 tunes later, there isn't anything but great music. This is my favorite Sharon Shannon cd. Wait til you hear her on whistle. The rhythm section doesn't get in the way. The Kane sisters keep up with the Shannon sisters and everyone makes inspired music. Can the band play really fast? Yes! And they play with feeling. Best of all, sounds like everyone is having a really good time whipping out these amazing tunes effortlessly. It's trad! It's contemporary! It's brilliant music through and through. Shannon's 2003 recording, The Acoustic Tour, features a pared down band (no drums, bass, or Kane sisters) and is a rare find, too.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2002-02-21

If you can obtain a copy of this album, do so! Don't hesitate.

Sharon Shannon is one of the most amazing musicians you'll ever hear. But her studio albums don't really do her justice. In my opinion they've gone somewhat downhill since her first one. They're still great records, but nothing comes close to seeing her live. This album captures one of her fiery live performances. Not to be missed.
