The album ends with "Fight the Power," the group's ultimate statement of purpose, from its pounding, atonal sound collage to its furious politics. Fear of a Black Planet transcends what we know as rap and goes down as just a great piece of work in any genre. This is an album that combines all the elements: vision, cohesion, originality, scope, ambition, confidence, substance, and relevance. From the sound bites of the opening track right on down to the call to arms of "Fight the Power", this masterpiece is breathtakingly on the mark. These songs deal with a wide range of subjects such as hope ("Brothers Gonna Work It Out"), interracial dating ("Pollywannacraka"), the bigotry of showbiz ("Burn Hollywood Burn"), and everything in between to create an album of sheer power. Even the throwaways like "B-Side Wins Again" and "Reggie Jax" keep the listener interested. Fear of a Black Planet is just a massive onslaught of song-tumbling-into-song that grabs your ears and refuses to let go. Chuck D has always been a master of the 5-minute rap song and on here, he delivers maybe his best ever on "Welcome to the Terrordome", Chuck D spilling his guts about everything that pisses him off at a schizophrenic pace about the dangers of propaganda. It is truly a magnificent and moving piece of personal songwriting. All in all, Fear of a Black Planet is right up there with Blur's The Great Escape, Radiohead's OK Computer, and Massive Attack's Mezzanine for best album of the 90's. A+

A Great Album, but..........2007-04-05

...Not PEs best. Without a doubt a classic, but not better than Nation of Millions, BRtS, or Apocalypse 91. 'Fear' lacked the cohesion of these others with a few missteps like: Can't Do Nuttin' For Ya Man, Reggie Jax, and 4(!) instrumentals.

And, not the fault of PE, or the song, which was good when it came out, but Fight the Power was so over played I can no longer listen to it.

Another hip hop masterpiece!!!!!.......2006-03-12

PE is another hip hop music icon that'll be talked about in 100 years as pioneering the heart and soul of America's truest art form of self-expression, joy, pain, heartache and real world problems and solutions.

You don't know hip hop and you definitely know hip hop music at its highest, purest form if you don't own, know of or even heard this album.

It's overwhelming Afrocentric (par for the course circa popular hip hop 1989-mid 1990).

For all listeners, you'll definitely get a strong sense that PE has something to say about Black Empowerment and challenging the status quo.

For white listeners, please don't be scared off by this album's Pro Black sentiments.

PE's Pro-Black messages are NOT anti-white ... PE's very much about self-help.

I can remember seeing tape of a documentary back in 1993 of a PE concert they performed waaayyy out in the boonies, somewhere in Middle America where minorities are an entity the local yocals probably only saw on TV.

Point is, they talked to several members of the overwhelmingly white, big hair, mullet-sporting crowd and to my surprise and delight, the crowd "got it."

They spoke with respect and admiration of PE and explained themselves how they thought it wasn't offensive and that PE was just promoting Black empowerment and for more people to get education, question society's way and know their history.

Powerful stuff (both this album and that documentary).

"Fear Of A Black Planet" - The title alone is worth the money.Such a great undertaking in making this album and you here it from the first cut.So much texture from the interludes to songs, practically seemless.Mostly remembered for "Fight The Power" but at so many points of this album Chuck D drops an entire history course ear whooping without the listener realizing it.He had the fury of a poet, the urgency of a street reporter and the wisdom of a teacher.Its like listening to a rebel harnessing all of his frustration and anger into some sense and direction.Flavor Flav keeping pace with his yeaah boyeees gave the songs an audience almost without getting in the way.Hank Shocklee and Co. did a masterful job with the production and arangment of the loops,samples and instrumentation.Future producers for any music can listen and learn.My track highlights are as follows:

2)Brothers Gonna Work It Out
3)911 Is A Joke
4)Who Stole The Soul?
5)Fight The Power

Fight the Power!.......2006-01-29

Most of the younger generation (those born in the 1990's) are probely familer with Flavor Flav with all the TV spotlight he gets on VH-1. Yet back in the Day when Flavor was cracked out, he was with the likes of Chuck D and Terminator X in a very important rap group Public Enemy. This is my favorite PE album of the bunch. They say three times is a charm, and since this was thier third effort, not only did they manage to pull off their best album, but one of the top ten best albums in hip-hop EVER! Almost every song here is a Gem, and for all those that listen to garbage hip-hop (50 Cent, Juvinelle, Little Jon, D-12) then maybe you should use those CD's as coasters or frisbees, and pick up Fear of a Black Planet to hear what REAL Hip-Hop soundsl like. Unfortanltly, the band started to go downhill from here, with two less then steller efforts after this one, and then completely vanishing into thin air. With the return of Flavor outta nowhere being on VH-1's "The Surreal Life" and 2 other shows on VH-1, it seems like Public Enemy also came back. I have heard some of the newer material, but it just doesn't live up to this. This is a real important piece of hip-hop history, as a matter of fact, MUSIC history. Please Put this one in your collection if you dont have it. ENJOY

The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.

A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

I love Sousa marches but this recording while comprehensive and cheep lacks much to be desired in the musical rendension. It lacks the spark and musicality of Sousa.

Sousa By the Royal Marines.......2007-03-31

This is a great CD re-issue of the Band of the Royal Marines School of Music under Graham Hoskins. This band did a three LP series on Sousa marches some years ago that was better than most on this very well covered topic. Sousa march recordings will always come and go, but some like this stand out more than others. For one, there is nothing like the panache of a Royal Marines band. Their sound is a time honored development that gets passed from one generation to the next. Even as the number of RM bands continues to change and downsize, there are now about four bands left in the service, their sound quality continues to be superb.

When these recordings were made RM bands were still at their height in the British service and their quality was amazing. Most bands numbered over 60 in this period, and that is why many Americans may be surprsed at the volume of music produced here. This is not one of your small, though excellent regimental bands! Americans tend to think that British military band instrumentation is on the thin side. Not so here! Of course Sousa always sounds best with either the Allentown band or the US Marine band.

This CD is evidence of how popular Sousa has always been in the UK, and with RM bands in particular. The selection here on two CDs covers most of the standard Sousa fair, with a few different selections here and there. Unfortunatley there are none of Sousa's fine transcriptions for classical music, or selections from his operettas. This music is always wonderful to have in combination with the marches as it shows how much variety he was capable of in his compositions. For that kind of concert the reader is referred to the very fine collection of Sousa music being done under the Naxos label by the Band of the Royal Artillery.

Here you will find a solid collection of Sousa's great marches. Roughly a third of those 136 compositions are contained here. The Royal Marines give a sharpe and clear sound to these works which should certainly inspire. You will also get a very nice idea how RM bands sounded back in the 1980s. Graham Hoskins was a fine director of music, typical of the inhouse genius of the Royal Marines Band Service at that time. He took this band on a USA tour in 1985 with the Arygll & Sutherland Highlanders. Devotees of Sousa should enjoy these spirited versions of the march king's music as performed across the pond.

Still Among the Best.......2006-06-01

I bought two audio casettes with these marches back in the 1980's and wore them out. These performances are hard to beat for virtuosity, enthusiasm, and sparkle. The sound quality is outstanding. And there are some marches that are rarely, if at all, available.

How Sousa Should Sound.......2006-03-07

Great value 2 cd disc set cut in the early 1980's & remastered the sound of the Royal Marines Band is nothing short of terrific. Judging by the sound would not be surprised for this to be a combined double RM band. These 1st chair players give Sousa's great marches that extra kick that takes the "March Kings" music to that higher level. By the center quick march!!!!

Maybe it's a concept album, but every odd numbered track on Apocalypse is incredible, while the even tracks fall apart or never come together at all. If you listen to the odds, you get PE breaking down issues facing African Americans almost to minutiae, outing everything from corporate sneaker pimps ("Shut Em Down") and 40oz. killers ("One Million Bottlebags") to a racially corrupt government ("By the Time I Get to Arizona"). And, thankfully, most of that dogma is couched inside PE's trademark air-raid drill noisematics so you can shake your ass while PE sublimates the gospel into your brain. Unfortunately, drop the odd tracks and you're listening to a sonically and lyrically inferior album. Suffer through Flav's reprehensible plea for martyrdom in "A Letter to the New York Post," or the inane and superfluous "Bring Tha Noize"--a co-op with Anthrax which takes rap-rock crossover back to a sad place, alongside Lou Reed's "Original (W)rapper". --Todd Levin

I have nothing but respect for Public Enemy. They opened up the doors for rappers who would raher give you insight in music than the same old playlist recommendations. Even though my respect for Flava Flav(or Tasteless Taste)has dwindled over the years, my respect for Chuck D has never changed. Standout Tracks: LOST AT BIRTH, REBIRTH, NIGHTTRAIN, CANT TRUSS IT(I used to be able to sing all the words to this song as a youth), I DONT WANNA BE CALLED YO N***A, BY THE TIME I GET TO ARIZONA, MOVE, I MILLION BOTTLEBAGS, SHUT EM DOWN(the skit at the end of this song is as truthful as it is hilarious), GET THE F*** OUTTA DODGE etc. Filler: None. Bottom Line: This is a hip hop classic from beginning to end. A lot of gems on this album, the lyrics were excellent and the production(provided by the Bomb Squad) is solid as usual. One of my favorite Public Enemy albums after It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back.

Bass for your Face , Not an 8 Track.......2006-01-03

After having released 3 critically acclaimed albums, PE came with Apocalypse 91. Unfortunately, this album (unfairly) marked a long downslide for them. Although the album itself is first rate, critics were already comparing their work to the near-perfect Nation of Millions. While Black Planet continued that barrage, 91 was a different record. It also came out at a time when Professor Griff and Chuck D were coming under heavy fire for statements they had made in press conferences. So as their public image suffered, so did this record. Standout cuts include "Can't Truss It" "Arizona" "Bottlebags" "Shut Em Down" and "Dodge". Granted, this project is more uneven than the other 3 PE tracks to this point, but still a great PE album.

The Last Call.......2005-11-20

The last great album from PE. It was released when the minstrel show known as gangster rap was on the verge of taking over hip hop.

Good Album from PE.......2005-08-08

Public Enemy's fourth album is as good as as It Takes a Nation... and Fear of a Black Planet. This album is the first album I listened that got me into Public Enemy. The songs are as political as on the last two plus there are some great lyrical songs on this cd. This also has the rock version of Bring Tha Noize with Anthrax which makes a great song even greater. Flava Flav's track is pretty good too. Favorites include Lost At Birth, Can't Truss It, I Don't Wanna Be Called Yo N**a, How To Kill A Radio Consultant, By The Time I Get To Arizona, 1 Million Bottlebags, More News At 11, Shut Em Down, Get The F--- Outta Dodge, and Bring Tha Noize (w/Anthrax). Highly Recommended.

Public Enemy No 1.......2005-02-14

This was actually the first hip hop album I bought (aswell as Dr Dre's 2001) when I was 10 in 2000. I didnt know this was rap cause i'd heard "Bring the noise" with anthrax on a video gameandthought it would be rap metal. At first I didn't like it and didnt listen to it for a couple of years, when I did I thought This is sick!

Annnywayz the standoutz on here are Shut Em Down, Bring the noise, nighttain and Dont Wanna be called yo N-gga. This is a less heard of cd than the others but is still dope. Not asgood as the first three but still you should buy it.

And thats all I have to say about that

When a band is named after the Mountain of Doom in Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, you're pretty much guaranteed epic metal at its most extravagant. But despite their lyrical bent (including 'Dungeons and Dragons' titles like 'Ride for Vengeance', 'Victorious March' and 'The Dragons' 'Flight Across the Waves'), Sweden's Amon Amarth eschew the expected Germanic power metal usually associated with such subject matter for brutally intense Scandinavian death metal. The song which bears the group's namesake is probably the most memorable, as it contains the chaotic noises of battle, the screams of the dying and much sword clashing to boot.

Disappointing.......2006-12-30

I heard from a number of people that Amon Amarth were an excellent death metal band, so with that in mind, I though I'd try OSFTGH. What I hear, and it certainly seems I'm missing out on something, is sloppy musicianship and poor songwriting. Just because you have mead dripping from your beard, and you scream out lyrics that contain, no mercy, vengeance and "it's your time to die" does not mean you can create "authentic" Viking/metal. These idiots could definitely take lessons from: Enslaved, Manegarm, Falkenbach to name a few. Don't fall for the hype!!

Sublime Savagery.......2006-05-10

Intelligent music is a good thing. Music which appreciates the purpose of music as an art form, with thought provoking lyrics and ingenius song structures made to stimulate the mind. But sometimes all that thinking gets boring and you just want a big slab of huge riffs and crushing drums to blow your head off. And as of yet, there is no band out there who accomplish this to the same standard as Amon Amarth. So sit back, relax, and let the titanic wall of sound that is "Once Sent From The Golden Hall" blow you off your feet, and 99.9% of other metal bands out of the water.

Despite the fact that this is Amon Amarth's oldest and rawest release, it is also, strangely, more infectious (I don't want to say "catchy") than most of their later work. The rhythm guitar sound on here is big, fast and crunchy, exactly what the modern day headbanger wants washing over their ears. What comes as more of a surprise though, is that the lead guitar is mostly made up of fast, tremolo picking, somewhat similar to "The Gallery" era Dark Tranquillity. A brave, yet wise move on Amon Amarth's part as the alternation between monsterous, crushing riffs and the more atmospheric lead guitar helps build a nice balance between power and atmosphere, appropriate for a Viking metal album

The drumming on offer here is very worthy of mention. The drummer knows exactly what he is doing. The style is open, yet still satisfyingly powerful. It's excellently in pace with the rest of the music, and the double bass pedal evokes all the power and brutality you could ask for.

Johan Hegg's vocal performance is also astonishing. In general he alternates between a very deep, low growl, evoking the same thick, dense power of the instruments, and a more throaty rasp. Similarly to the guitars, this union of opposites helps blend the power and emotion essential to a Viking metal album. On "Once sent..." he belts out what I consider to be some of the best executed lines in all of metal, a particular favourite being his roar of "THE BATTLE RAGES!!!/BUT I HEAR ONLY RAINDROPS FALLING!!!" on "Without Fear," the third track.

If any fault is to be found with "Once Sent..." it would be a meager one with the production. Considering the overall quality of the recording here, which correctly emphasises the thick, organic air of dense power present, it is a minor gripe. But in general, I found the guitars were too loud, often stifling the excelent double bass drumming and thereby costing "Once Sent..." some of the brutality it potentially had.

But, all things considered, this is a fantastic composition, combining raw power, sublime brutality and melodic harmonies in a way that few bands have ever accomplished. For anyone who just wants to thrash, this is an integral part of your collection. What are you waiting for?

Once, The Doors Of The Golden Hall Were Opened..........2006-04-03

...And through those doors would be a force, driven only by fate, to take on the world. This CD ties for first in my book of Amon Amarth. The first Full Length CD by these Norse veterans. Only through this pure Swede metal can the sounds of Europe's Gods can be heard. This combines super crunchy riffs with epic, hymnic, and majestic melodies. It combines with the sometimes doomy, thundering rhythms to turn the tables in any battle, no matter how mighty the foe may seem.
The masterpiece "Amon Amarth"; more than eight minutes long, with its slow/stomping rhythm, is the true music of the Gods.

This is one of Amon Amarth's best albums! They are actually one of the pioneers of viking melodic death metal. I first heard them on a metalmiester (mixed metal) cd produced by Metal Blade Records. I was so impressed by "Victorious March" that I ended up buying this album. For that time the style of melodic death metal was just somthing that was brewing within black metal bands and it did not explode until the mid 90's. This album is a must own!

The Essential Amon Amarth Album.......2005-09-24

This is the Amon Amarth album out their for the purists. Its their most raw work of all their albums. Once Sent From The Golden Hall is mostly the sound of their demo/ep days but more matured, talented, and structured. If your looking for a release by Amon Amarth in the likes of The Crusher and Versus The World, this release is definatly not for you. Some consider this to be their best work, I considerate it to be on par with The Crusher, but hard to compare it to that album because they both have sounds different from each other.

A noticable differance on this album as compared to newer Amon Amarth releases, is that Yohan sings with a much deeper voice. On The Crusher and Versus The World Mr. Hegg sings in a more coherant voice that sounds more gargled or that is coming from the back of his throat. On Once Sent From The Golden hall Yohan singing seems to origonate from deep within his throat or stomach. Its a very deep singing style filled with volume. You'll notice upon listening to this album that he doesn't limit himself to this style. At times where the music requires a more screaming style vocal, Yohan will sing more from the back of his throat with a sound that is not as deep. It sounds more like he is grasping for air and letting the emotion of the song take him over. As if the lyrics were what was happening to him at this moment and he was singing them to you, showing his heart to you. These moments are few and far between but when they happen its quite amazing and will make for a memorable moment for the listening. I know they give me goosebumps. The majority of the vocals are a more stabble singing style like I desribed before, very deep vocals that have a little rhyrhym to them. They serve very well to deliver the interesting, intense, and enjoyable lyrical themes. The singing can get very emotion at times, usually at the climax of the songs, somewhere in the middle or end. The most noticable vocal work on this album Is done on Ride For Vengeance and Without Fear, perhaps the two most memorable songs on the album. Ride For Vengence starts off fast and strong with the vocals, they deliver alot of intensity and rage. Without Fear has some moments of pure energy and passion when Yohan screams portraying a man dying. Very passionate and moving, he sings as though he is becoming the person in the song, especially in without fear. Vocal work is amazing, bottom line.

The guitar work is equally amazing, with tons of fast complex riffs and great solo's. The guitars work in an unusual way, the songs on Once Sent From The Golden Hall are not very centralized, so many guitar riffs are not repeated. This makes the songs interesting for that the guitars are ever changing throughout them, riffs are hardly repeated. There will be an attention grabing opening riff in a song, some more riffs throughout it that stand out while there is no singing, and a solo to top it off, all well done. The riffs sometimes take on an apocalyptic feel when they are slow, especially the opening riff of Amon Amarth (track 7). The general guitar work and riffs are heavy and fast. They drums play well with the guitars so the riffs have some added volume. Like I said the guitars don't carry the songs, they change alot and don't dictate how a song will sound. Most songs on here are have two main focuses, guitars and riffs, and the vocals. Each do something very interesting and can be apprieciated at the same time, they don't take a backseat to eachother. The range of the guitars is also to be noted, they can be choppy, heavy, and brutal, and also rhythmic and melodic, or a combination of these adjectives. Most of the time they are heavy or melodic, but they always sound great.

These songs have some very memorable moments, like the Ending of The Dragons' Flight Across The Waves has an intense and angry vocal chorus. Ride For Vengence will have a very fast a brutal intro that you will never forget and want more of. The middle to end of Amon Amarth becomes very passionate and emotional, the big draw of this song. Without fear has few great and memorable lines about halfway through the song. I would say each song on this album has something you will remember and make you want to listen to it time and time again. More specifically Ride For Vegeance and Without fear will stick in your heads as songs that you will come to this album for. The album starts out strong and goes out fighting (literally). This is for any straight foward death metal fan that likes a more heavy style of death metal. Its not brutal like some bands, but in its own way shows its brutality, mostly through lyrical themes. This album is flawless and timeless.

Really, really, REALLY BAD!.......2006-11-22

Bought and returned it with the first few minutes after sliding it into the player. The cover art is nice. As for the, um, muzak, I expected something less...fuzzy. Even the player hated it, spitting it out within seconds after tasting the first track.
If any of the original movie scores rate 5 stars, this rates a solid 10 black holes, IMHO.

Deceptive Title & Trade Dress.......2006-07-27

The title line of this product says Enya (Composer), Roma Enya / Ryan (Composer), Annie / Walsh, Fran / Shore, Howard Lennox (Composer), Howard Shore (Composer), Fran Shore Howard / Walsh (Composer). Had I read the descriptions more closely, I would have seen that the composers were listed in a way that made no sense. Rather, the list merely is composed of the names of the writers, musicians, and composers of the music in Peter Jackson's trilogy, so that someone who is familiar with the music of the trilogy would be deceived into buying this subpar and inadequate product. The trade dress is deceptive enough that it might border on trademark/trade dress infringment of the real stuff.
If you are a fan of the LOTR soundtracks and/or Howard Shore, I would avoid this product and opt for: 1) the official soundtracks of the trilogy; and 2) The Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Ring The Complete Recordings. Let's hope they follow up with the Two Towers and the Return of the King Complete Recordings.

This was a major disappointment.......2006-06-21

Too bad I can't give this one no stars. This disk is really bad. The performance is by a bland synthesizer "orchestra" without any of the depth or emotion you can find on the movie soundtracks. I would sell this CD back to the music store where I bought it, but then somebody else might be tempted to buy it. No; this disk is headed for the trash bin.

Not worth your money.......2006-05-14

Simply put, this album corrupts Howard Shore's music in the same way the ring tried to corrupt Frodo. The more you listen to it, the more you realize you should have bought the original soundtrack.

LOTR meets New Age.......2005-10-01

I wish I had read the other reviews before buying. 78 minutes of meandering through (and maiming) Howard Shore's fantastic work. No focus, no edge to the playing, themes apparently put together at random. The horns are poorly synthesized and sound pretty cheezy. Spend your money on the movie soundtrack. I wish I had.

Black Bastards was voted in Ego Trip's Book of Rap Lists as the most notable rap album of all time that was never released commercially, and with good reason. The fact that this excellent album, slated for a 1994 release, has not seen the light of day until 2001 testifies to a time when shortsighted industry backlashes against records that inflamed Middle America were in vogue. Elektra Records higher-ups canned the project due to its controversial cover art, which shows a Sambo figure being lynched. Finally available, this must-purchase concept album is worth the wait. From the jazzy, hypnotic samples on the title cut to "Sweet Premium Wine," a farcical ode to swigging 40-ounce bottles of brew (remember when drinking St. Ides and Old English was trendy?), you know you've found rap heaven. Classic headbanger "What a Niggy Know?" (and the remix featuring partner-in-rhyme MF Grimm) is equally off the chain. "Constipated Monkey" and weed anthem "Suspended Animation" are testaments to a time in rap music when experimental beats and obscure sampling ruled the roost. Black Bastards is where Brand Nubian meets De La Soul at the local bodega, heads wear Muslim kufis for kicks, and "word to the mutha'" actually refers to themes of pan-Africanism, repatriation, and reparations. Only audio quality hindered this release........2006-12-07

MF DOOM is one of my top five emcees, dead or alive, and I own all of his official material; in this long list of LP's, and a variety of aliases, MF DOOM's origins are by far radically different from his current output of music. KMD, which was originally a group with himself(as Zev Love X), his brother Subrock, and Onyx(a solo emcee, not the legendary crew), was a group straight out of hip-hop's golden-age, who released the understated classic, Mr. Hood, in the early nineties. On Mr. Hood, KMD's rhymes were part of an early conscious era of hip-hop, having a style akin to De La Soul. They were playful, but also profound, and tracks like "Peachfuzz" and "Humrush" were funky anthems out of the big apple.

A lot of things happened in the time between their debut and the creation of their sophomore album(which was slated to be released in 1994, but didn't see the light of day for seven years); Onyx left the group, Subroc was killed in an instance of manslaughter, Zev was left to finish the album, and ultimately, Elektra shelved Bl_ck B_st_rds for its controversial cover art.

It was obvious that this was a changing point in Zev's life - one that'd soon drive him into isolation, and depression for more than four years before finally re-emerging under his now famous moniker of MF DOOM. The actual music on this album took on a darker tone, with less playful concepts, and more hardcore ideas. Now, don't get it twisted; KMD aren't spitting any thuggery, or gunplay - no where in DOOM's career has he submitted himself to that - it's just that they're bringing the ruckus in their own way.

Onyx isn't really missed on this release, as both Zev and Subroc were more than ill enough to carry an album by themselves. They also handled the majority of the production, which is quite dope for the time of its release. So, with ill lyrics, and dope beats from perhaps one of the greatest emcees of all time, and a lost soldier who doesn't get nearly the recognition he deserves, what keeps KMD's Bl_ck B_st_rds from reaching classic status? The audio quality. Most bootlegs have better sound quality than this, and it's a shame. If this album would've been mastered better for its offical release, I firmly believe it would be more revered today, but as it stands, this is still an undeniably dope release, that hip-hop heads, and especially fans of DOOM, should check out.

What MF Doom Could Have Been Back In 1994 [4 stars].......2006-05-29

I'm pretty sure most of you know the story behind the album. If not, let me fill you in. KMD consisting of Zev Love X (now known as MF Doom) and his brother Subroc. Somewhere in 1993, Subroc was hit by a car and died on impact, leaving Zev Love X to finish the album by himself. When the album was done in 1994, Electra Records shelved the album because of its lyrics and the cover art showing a sambo character being hung. Electra would soon cut KMD from their roster, leaving Zev in obscurity. But the album officially sees the light of day in 2000, when MF Doom released it independently.

One thing I have to commend is the great movie samples that are on this CD. Starting with the intro "Garbage Day #3" which is made up of them. "Sweet Prenium Wine" is a song about knocking back a few drinks while the samples play as the hook. Most of the songs here on this CD are about smoking, as heard on the song "Smoking That S**t" which features vocals from Earthquake, Lord Sear, and Kurious. "Contact Blitt" (could be titled "Contact Blitz" or "Contact Blunt") is a song about Zev ride a bus to Los Angles with an arrogant bus driver, while smoking. "F Wit Ya Head" featuring vocals from H20 and CMOB and the song "Suspended Animation" are more songs dedicated to weed, all more to offend the higher-ups of Electra Records. One great track is "What A Niggy Know" (could be titled "What A Nigga Know") is Zev and Subroc comming correct with a serious attitude that will make your head nod. The 12 inch single was the only item released by Electra Records, but since the album was shelved, the single was pulled also. MF Grimm would drop in to help Zev do the remix. Subroc would get in a few solos also. He shows he had the lyrics on the song "Gimmie" (could be titled "Give It Here") as he says "Give me a choo choo train for my badass tracks..." He would also do his thing on the song "It Sounded Like A Roc."

One thing I have to knock is what many people have been saying in other reviews, the sound quality. Some songs sound like they have been worn out over the years so it sounds like a bootleg of a bootleg, making the vocals sound like they're held back by a sound barrier. A great example is the Zev Love X anger expressed song "Get-U-Now" and "Smoking That Sh**". Also I'm sure some of this album was recorded off a record. How did I come to this conclusion? The song "Plumskinzz" is exactly what I'm saying. The song has a nice piano sound and is going good as Zev spits his verse. As soon as it gets halfway through the hook, it sounds like the vocals were taken away and the beat freezes up. Then all of a sudden you hear MF Dooms [recent] voice come in and say "Loose Hoe God&Cupid" or as many listeners have interpeted "You're so GODDAMN stupid!" I don't EVER want to hear that again! Obviously he used a 12" single and someone hit the needle causing it to skip loudly to the instramental. The song would resume later on in the CD when a woman would come in and say "Oh Now I Don't Believe It!" as Subroc would continue his verse. Whats ironic about this whole song is that this song was recorded in 1991, and a former KMD member named Onyx the Birthstone Kid (many people who are familiar with late MF Doom albums know him as Rodan) had a verse on that song between Zev's and Subroc's (and believe it or not, Onyx had the best verse out of the three). So there is no actual musical vibe because those interludes causes a big chunk of the song to be missing. (How about recording the song correctly Mr. Dumille?) If you want to hear the uncut clear version of it, just find a "Nitty Gritty" 12 inch single because its the flipside of that, or you can locate a 1994 bootleg of the album.

Overall I'm happy that this album was finally released, since it was one of the biggest albums in 1994 that was shelved. But the way that this album was put together soundwise, that title could have been easily taken away. I recommed this album to those who want to hear more examples of Doom's early 90's production, the way MF Doom sounded in 1993/1994, or just curious of the lost album. Otherwise, you're better off buying "The Best Of KMD Album" which is a combination of this and the Mr. Hood album, or wait until Mr. Dumille decides to remaster the album and reissue it.

A classic that almost wasn't.......2006-05-12

If you know MF Doom, you probably know the history of this album. KMD was the original group consisting of Subrock, Zev luv-X (Doom) & Onyx. Onyx left and then while working on this LP Doom's brother Subrock was killed in a car accident. As the LP was finished Elektra shelved the album and dropped Doom due to the controversial cover art, (a sambo hanging from a gallows.)

Years later some of the rough cuts of the LP emerged on the Fondel Em' label as the "Black Bastard's: Roughs & Rares EP" giving a small hint to what greatness the album could have been. A few years later under Doom's own Metal Face Records "Black Bastards" finally saw the light of day.

The album is bittersweet; because you can't help but wonder what would have happened if it would have been released in 94. But given Doom's current fever pitch, it's no matter.

The only problem with the LP is the sound quality. It apears as if Doom had the masters on tape and wore them out, due to the distortions in several tracks.

DON'T LET THAT DISTRACT YOU. This album is amazing and worth every penny, but it is rare and tharefore hard to find. If you can't afford it, then I'd suggest "The best of KMD," it's the best 1/2's of both "Mr. Hood" & "Black Bastards."

interesting album by kmd.......2006-01-28

this album is a good album to tell you the truth it was kind of hard to listen to because of the weird production,but somtimes weird is actually good it grew on me.if u wanna know how mf doom started and sound like that then pick this album and also for fans of mf doom, this is their second album not their first.standout tracks are Get-U-Now,What A Nigga Know?,Contact Blitt,F*@# Wit' Ya Head!!,and What A Nigga Know? (Remix feat. MF Grimm), and also check out mf grimm's scars and memories.

Viktor Vaughn's finest.......2006-01-09

This is MF DOOM'S best work by far. Every track on this album is amazing, if you haven't already got this album this should be first on your list. It is arguably one of the best Hip-hop albums to ever come out. Buy this album or burn it, it won't dissapoint you once.

This is the Sousa record for people who are serious about marches. Sousa was the greatest march composer in the history of, well, marching, and this disc includes many fresh and interesting pieces that will likely be unfamiliar, as well as a couple of favorites (including "The Liberty Bell," famous as the theme to Monty Python's Flying Circus). But by and large, this disc focuses on the less well known pieces, though there's not a dud in the lot. Sousa had a special gift for orchestration and for writing tunes with real rhythmic interest; his marches never sound dull. Frederick Fennell is the simply the best wind band conductor around, and these performances are standard- setters. --David Hurwitz

Fennell Brings Out the Best in Sousa 's Marches.......2004-02-21

This is an outstanding CD. The sound quality is very good. The instrumental balance is very good. It's interesting to compare the rather subtle difference in the percussion section performance between the two recording dates, particulalarly the cymbalist.
Sousa had an uncanny ability to score the cymbal strike at places which add significantly to the listening experience.

A solid Sousa album that comes up a bit short.......2003-01-26

In the 60s, Fennell and the Eastman Wind ensemble recorded a good amount of marches by Sousa, many released on this album, and the rest (as far as I know) on the album Hands Across the Sea. As many of Sousa's best marches are on that later album, this one falls a bit short of greatness -- but not my much.

Sousa knew his marches, writting something like 200 of them, and almost every one of these is a great example of how to write a good march. Indeed, The Liberty Bell and Manhatten Beach are two of my alltime favorite marches. However, being prolific often means that there will be misses, and many here, while written well, just aren't all that memorable. I'd be hard pressed to be able to identify such pieces as The Gallant Seventh, New Mexico, or the Black Horse Troop unless I had just listened to them.

Still, one has to admire the creative way Sousa sometimes put his music together. The Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company uses the song 'Aude Lang Syne' for its trio, and it fits so well that it's hard to believe he didn't write it himself. The Liberty Bell uses tubular bells in *just* the right spots that it makes an impact every time one listens. And Sabre And Spurs uses wook blocks to simulate horses, which also works great.

So overall, this is a solid album that has its ups and downs. The sound quality is great, haveing a certain amount of 'bite' that's almost impossible with digital recordings, the playing impecable, and there's plenty of variety.

The Mastery of Fennell.......2002-01-28

I've owned this CD for several years, and bought a copy recently as a Christmas gift. Frederick Fennell is a modern master of band and marches, and I own several of his recordings. What makes this CD a standout for me is the Mercury Living Presence recording and remastering method. I own over two dozen of this series because Living Presence does indeed represent a different method of producing music for the recorded media. It DOES sound more lifelike to me than conventional multimike recordings. To anyone considering purchase of this CD I'd recommend also ordering 'Screamers', the Living Presence CD of circus marches. To me this is feel-good music at its best, and terrific for listing in the car! Additionally, the Living Presence series stands out for its excellent liner notes with explanations of the Living Presence method. This CD is a keeper. Incidentally, the recipient of this CD has since gone out and bought several other Living Presence CD's after hearing this!s

MASTERFUL RENDITIONS IN GLORIOUS RECORDED SOUND.......2001-11-16

An utterly masterful set, containing many of Sousa's unjustly neglected works. (An integral recording of his complete marches is overdue by a good half-century.*) Fennell conducts with incredible verve, and the Eastman Wind Ensemble responds in kind, with immaculately tight and polished performances. The recording is demonstration-class. Sousa has never sounded better, and probably never will.

*EDIT: Actually, a nearly-complete recording of the marches has been available, as of the time of this review, for at least a good quarter-century--first on LP, now on CD: that being, a series of analog recordings by The Detroit Concert Band, led by Leonard B. Smith. Currently available from Walking Frog Records (on five CDs), the DCB/Smith collection unfortunately suffers from some serious problems--not the least of which is the highly variable and substandard quality of the recorded sound.

A Classic well preserved.......2001-09-28

This one's a Classic and the sound is remarkable considering
when it was recorded. Viva Mercury Records!

I do wish more of the familiar Sousa stuff was included.
