In the path of enormously popular collections of number one singles by Elvis and the Beatles comes this crammed (seconds shy of the 80-minute mark) disc from another pop-culture icon, Diana Ross & the Supremes. 14 Diana Ross/Supremes tracks appear in some of their most vivid sound ever, while the post-Ross Supremes get their due with "Stoned Love." Ross' Hollywood years make for the weakest music here ("Touch Me in the Morning," "Endless Love"), but disco smashes "Upside Down," "I'm Coming Out," and "The Boss" prove as smart, canny, and enduring as Supremes 45s like "You Keep Me Hangin' On" and "Reflections." The contemporary, yet already dated, remix of "Hangin' On" at album's end suggests, in fact, that Ross might make one more dance-floor comeback if paired with the right behind-the-scenes team. Basement Jaxx, anyone? --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars great old songs.......2007-08-05

I knew the words to every song without reading them or anticipating, this CD has all the old favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Revisiting the 60's in Style!.......2007-07-12

This music defines my happy days living in Austin, TX while attending The University! The Supreme sounds ROCKED the halls of my Dorm and accompanied me on many of my hiking journeys up and down the Hike and Bike Trail. Diana's soft sexy voice played in the background many dark evenings while my boyfriend (now husband) and I "got busy" in the back seat of his Chevy Convertible up on Lookout Mountain! Good times!

5 out of 5 stars Great songs with a great sound.......2007-05-19

I really enjoyed the song quality on this CD. It has all of my favorite Supreme & Diana hits like - Come See About Me, Touch Me In The Morning & Im Coming Out.

I love Cd's that you can put on and just let play whether at home, in the car, or in the background when company is over.

If you like the Supremes and Diana this is one of the best variety of songs available.

I say give it a try & sing along ... I did.

5 out of 5 stars Diana Ross & the Supremes.......2007-05-15

If you want the best of Diana and The Supremes, this is the cd for you! It has all of the #1's from the group and Diana's solo career during the 70's. It is fantastic!

5 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY THE BEST!!!.......2007-05-06

If you love the Diana Ross music, you have to buy this cd!!! this is the best effort to compilate all the Diana's career in only one disc, and the quality of the songs (all they are remastered in stereo) is incredible!! but the best is that all the No. 1 singles from the supremes and Diana's solo single No. 1 hits are in this colection and wooow!! 24 songs !!!!; from the first hits like WHERE DID OUR LOVE GO, BABY LOVE, STOP! IN THE NAME OF LOVE and CAN'T HURRY LOVE to memorable songs like ENDLESS LOVE (with Lionel Richie), DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOU GOING TO and UPSIDE DOWN (pure disco), if you think, you can realize that you have songs from the early 60's to the late 80's IN ONLY ONE COMPILATION!!!; THEN I RECOMMEND THIS CD TO EVERYBODY!!

One advertising: some versions of this cd have the inclussion of Diana's song CHAIN REACTION (the latin-american versions like the Mexican and Argentina ones have this song), but the US version doesn't iclude this great song, unfortunately.

4 out of 5 stars Great Songs..........2007-07-18

A moving tribute to our need to WAKE UP and change... Whatever that needs to be changed ouside needs first to be changed from the inside...

3 out of 5 stars Not definitive: Selling Melissa short.......2007-07-08

Melissa Etheridge is, simply stated, one of the most important female artists of the last two decades. She not only made it as a woman rocking on her own terms, she also put her sexuality on the line and then made her personal battle with cancer into a public crusade. These qualities frame her as a person and are important markers of her integrity.

But more importantly, she has made some brilliant music with at least two five star albums. Both the debut and her breakthrough, "Yes I Am," are must-own records. Naturally, they are the two CD's from which the lion's share of "The Road Less Traveled" is culled; six of the 18 songs here. Add the six songs that are previously unreleased, and that leaves only six songs culled from the rest of Melissa's library.

The diference between this and the previous version is the addition of the Oscar winning "I Need To Wake Up" from "An Inconvenient Truth." The CD booklet is gone to make it more environmentaly freindly and the plactic jewel box is replaced by a recycled paper shell with foam tray. While it changes the packaging, it doesn't change the fact that there are too many ommissions here to make it listener friendly.

This presents a problem. It leaves off such terrific popular favorites and singles. "Dance Without Sleeping," "Your Little Secret," "Breathe" and the entire contents of "Skin" wind up being neglected. That is not to say that "The Road Less Traveled" is a poor collection; it's just that it is not as thorough as it could have been.

As for the new material, it's all good stuff. Melissa's covers of Tom Petty's "Refugee" and (finally!) a studio version of Janis Jopin's "Piece Of My Heart" are, alone, worth the price of the disc. Her anthems of survival "This Is Not Goodbye" and "I Run For Life" are heartfelt and solid. Too bad the collection is a little too tame and not enough crazy. I am sure the inevitable double disc collection will eventually appear, but for now, "The Road Less Traveled" is a less than perfect primer.

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 Stars... Definitive overview of Mellisa Etheridge's career.......2007-07-02

Melissa Etheridge is one of the premier female singer-songwriters from this era, and after 8 studio albums, issued from 1988 to 2004, Melissa got a very deserved "Greatest Hits" treatment in 2005. Two years later, the album is reissued to include an unexpected development.

"Greatest Hits: The Road Less Traveled" (18 tracks, 76 min.) brings a terrific overview of Melissa's career. The set starts off with a nice new cover of the Tom Petty hit "Refugee". After that the set rolls chronologically. "The Way I Do" from her debut album is very typical of the "Etheridge sound": acoustic guitar driven rock-and-roll. I perseonally love that sound. 1993's "Yes I Am" album, arguably Melissa at her commercial peak, gets 3 tracks: "I'm The Only One", the beautiful "Come To My Window" (her biggest hit ever), and "If I Wanted To". Other highlights include "I Want To Come Over" and the new cover of Janis Joplin's "Piece of My Heart".

The reissue comes with a new track, the excellent "I Need to Wake Up", which plays over the closing credits of the "Inconvenient Truth" documentary. The song went on to win the Oscar for Best Original Song in the 2007 Oscars. Overall, this makes the compilation just that much better than the original 2005 compilation. If you were on the fence about getting this, go ahead and buy this, surely the definitive Melissa Etheridge compilation.

4 out of 5 stars Coming Back To Her Window.......2007-03-17

There are very few female singers that seem to show that their words come from the heart. While more of the artists are about the outside image like Jessica Simpson, Beyonce', and Kelly Clarkson, there are much fewer singer/songwriters that still sing with feeling and compassion. Melissa Etheridge is one of those who still has the drive and has definitely shown it the past few years. She had struggled and defeated her battle with breast cancer, and reclaimed herself as a defiant, down to Earth female performer. Her hits record which was released a few years ago, showed that she was good, but it didn't completely showcase her career definitively. Now that it has been re-issued, has it gotten any better?

Melissa Etheridge's 2007 re-released Greatest Hits: The Road Less Traveled, spans her near 20 year career with 18 tracks that are bold, and defiant to her voice. The songs here have all been remastered nicely, and sound better than they were released a few years ago. Although not much has changed on this record as before. The album still includes a lot of great tracks including I Want To Come Over, Come To My Window, I Am The Only One, and Ain't It Heavy. The album also includes her adult contemporary hit I Run For Life, and a cover of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Refugee. The only new addition in this reissuing is I Need To Wake Up, her Oscar-winning song from the Al Gore documentary, An Inconvient Truth. The song is very bold and speaks a clear message to life around us, and fits nicely in the package. Nevertheless, the album still overlooks a few great tracks like it did before such as Breathe, Your Little Secret, and her soulful song I Wanna Be In Love from her
album Skin.

Still, despte the record overlooking a few songs, Melissa Etheridge's Greatest Hits: The Road Less traveled isn't a bad record worth listening too, for anybody who doesn't own a Melissa Etheridge album. It is a little better than it was before. I still love listening to her music, and I hope she comes back with a new record soon. Even with all the stuff that is going on, many of us are still coming to her window for great music.

    Amazon.com essential recording

Before Andrew Lloyd Webber's seemingly endless run of Broadway shows, when he was known primarily for Jesus Christ Superstar, he managed to write this dramatic, tuneful, occasionally powerful religious work. Although Lloyd Webber takes some liberties with the text and organization of the traditional Requiem mass, the result is a unified and finely crafted composition. There are exciting moments in the "Dies irae" and in the "Lacrymosa", where voices and orchestra are most effectively used to convey the desperate yet hopeful feeling of the text. This work isn't performed much these days in its entirety, but, as in many of Lloyd Webber's musicals, it produced a "hit" tune--the "Pie Jesu"--whose popularity alone could have kept the composer living comfortably for the rest of his life. --David Vernier

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Sir Andrew should stick to musicals.......2007-03-14

What's not to like about Andrew Lloyd Webber? Well, his attempt at liturgical composition. This work blends Old with New NOT very harmoniously. Much of the score rings of tunes reminiscent from his other works such as CATS, Evita, and Phantom of the Opera. His obviously intentional cacophony in places causes one to wonder if perhaps he had unresolved altar boy issues! Even if one wants to argue that musically, the piece is impressive, the volume levels of this recording make it difficult to listen to without having to constantly adjust the knob.

2 out of 5 stars One Great Song.......2007-03-13

This piece sounds like a musical and proves Sir Webber should stick to that medium. I bought this disk for one and only one cut; Pia Jesu. This is as beautiful a piece of music as I've heard and the credit goes as much to the boy tenor as to Webber.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite good enough...........2007-02-14

In reading these reviews, the smart people will always say things like "But don't compare this work to Verdi or Mozart". Which is the musical equivelent of "Those guys were good...but this Lloyd Webber guy...". This is the feeling I get listening to this CD. And before I get typecast as a "classical" snob (even though Verdi was romantic), I will point to the Alfred Schnittke Requiem for proof that effective music CAN be written in a wholy modern style. But this steamer just doesn't do it. Ray of light, though was Lorin Maazel, who does the best he can with a work that just doesn't give you anything after the 200th time you listen to it, unlike the above mentioned works. I hope he wasn't in charge of the solists, because they seem to be stuck on one idea throughout (Domingo, sing really really loud throughout without any emotional sub-text! Honestly, why is this guy so famous?). Really folks, there are better Requiems out there, in every respect possible. Buy those. Make Robert Shaw's family a bit richer. Seroiusly, it's like Webber cut and pasted the music at random, without caring, but not in a good way.

5 out of 5 stars Only game in town.......2006-11-10

Thank goodness this is a top-notch performance and recording of Andrew Lloyd Webber Requiem since the only one available.

5 out of 5 stars ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER'S MOST SOLEMN PIECE OF MUSIC.......2006-09-17

When Andrew Lloyd Webber's father William, a classical composer in his own right, died in 1982, his by that time famous son decided to commemorate his death with a piece of newly composed music. But it was not the musical that ALW had in mind for this intimate occasion; he rather returned to his own classical roots he acquired while frequenting the Westminster music school, where his father was an organist.

The result of this effort is captured on this CD in form of a requiem mass. This precise form, immortalized by the likes of Verdi and Mozart in the past, seems an awkward and a rather risky choice for a composer who became famous by revitalizing the concept and the perception of the modern musical theatre. And yet, the whole piece managed not only to be embraced by the public, but also it established itself as an important contribution to the genre.

All of the mass parts as recorded on this CD manage to invoke the much needed feeling this type of work requires. The opening `Requiem and Kyrie' number, with its gentle tune, a moving chorus accompaniment and the mixture of the capital voices leaves a deep and haunting feeling with the listener. We can oppose such quiet and dark moments with the fiery strength of `Dies irae', whose music captures the dramatic pace of the written word. `Hosanna', on the other hand, is something you would expect out of this composer-a big, lush melody, with strong choral back up and crescendos. One must also make reference to `Pie Jesu', probably the most touching passage in this score, which became the best known part from this whole piece. Its gentle melody works better as a part of the whole score. Nowadays it reached a new generation of listeners when it was recorded by a young soprano Charlotte Church.

One of the sources this requiem draws its power from is its cast. It was conceived for a high soprano, a treble and a tenor. The soloists who sing these voices are of top class. We have Sarah Brightman (who was then married to Lloyd Webber), Placido Domingo (who reached international stardom a couple of years later as one of the three tenors) and a young boy Paul Miles-Kinsgston. Their voices are perfect for the score and make an excellent bland. Lorin Maazel, a world famous maestro, conducted both this recording and the subsequent world premiere performance in February 1985 at St. Thomas' Episcopal Church in New York.

Both the album and the single `Pie Jesu' reached the UK top 10 and the critics honored this piece by awarding Andrew Lloyd Webber a Grammy Award for the best contemporary classical piece.

The other important point this score makes is the fact how gifted a composer ALW really is, easily moving between the world of the classical and the musical theatre music, something his detractors have never seem to grasp or appreciate. This CD is therefore both the proof of a talent as it is a successful representative of the genre.

The fans of this style should have no trouble in liking it and it should also make a nice addition to the collection of ALW's work. Also, it may just serve as a much needed comfort during the time of mourning. When my 93-year old great grandmother Monika died this January, this music was a perfect choice to listen to while thinking about the loss of a loved person and commemorating the event in a most personal way. I would like to dedicate this review to the memory of her.

    Album Description

On March 25, the remarkable Elton John proudly turned 60 years old. To celebrate the occasion, he performed his 60th concert at Madison Square Garden, and two days later released a newly compiled and digitally remastered collection of his greatest hits from past to present. This over 78-minute-long compilation is the first-ever single disc to cover the first 35 years of the great singer-songwriter's career.

The Number 1's series is a brand-new line of CDs featuring #1 radio hits from the biggest names in music. This collection includes decade compilations as well as individual artist CDs and is being released by Universal Music Enterprises (UMe) in its ground-breaking, environmentally-friendly packaging format. A first for the music industry, the standard package (both sleeve and tray) will be completely paper-recyclable, continuing the company's long-standing commitment to being "green."

5 out of 5 stars THE ROCKET MAN'S GREATEST HITS AND MORE.............2007-08-03

In late March 2007, shortly after Elton John's 60th birthday, Universal Music released yet another of his "Best Of" compilations, which, surprisingly, became a nearly instantaneous smash hit on the Billboard Charts. But is it truly a surprise when, in the course of a forty-year long musical career, Elton John and his lyricists, most notably his long-time partner Bernie Taupin, have crafted some of the finest examples of pop songwriting craft? Of course not, and this "Best Of" compilation truly demonstrates some of the most elegant examples of that craft, emphasizing almost exclusively, his early halcyon days back in the early to mid 1970s when he was truly "Captain Fantastic", the reigning king of pop and rock and roll in America. "Rocket Man: Number Ones" includes twelve hit songs which were at the top of the charts in various categories - virtually all Billboard's - plus five additional songs which have been long-time favorites at Elton's live performances. This CD-only version of Elton's latest greatest hits compilation is quite desirable for its list of songs that emphasizes the legendary earliest phase of his decades-long career. Packed in eco-friendly foam packing, the CD is accompanied by a thin booklet that lists the songs, co-writers (Primarily of course, lyricist Bernie Taupin; only two songs aren't listed as having been written by Elton.), the songs' producers, and a cover of the albums from whence these songs were released originally (or subsequently appeared if they were released initially as stand-alone singles). Best of all, this is a "Best Of" compilation that's worth acquiring since the sound quality is much better than on virtually any of his previous "Greatest Hits" compilations.

The opening tracks are a musical return to the "dizzying heights" of Elton's storied career: "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", "Bennie & The Jets", "Daniel" and "Crocodile Rock", which are still among the most popular long-time favorites at Elton's live performances. His absolutely brilliant cover version of The Beatles' "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds", "Philadelphia Freedom", "Island Girl", "Don't Go Breaking My Heart (with Kiki Dee)", and "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word" close out the legendary 1970s phase of his career on this CD. Surprisingly, only three hits recorded after 1976 are included, out of many potential choices; "Sacrifice", "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me (with George Michael)", and "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" (co-written with lyricist Tim Rice originally for the Disney animated film "The Lion King"). Under the subheading "And Other Favorites", five classic songs from the 1970s serve as a musical bookend to this "Best of" compilation: "Your Song", "Tiny Dancer", "Rocket Man (I Think It's Going To Be A Long, Long Time)", "Candle In The Wind", and "Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting)" (The last two songs were more popular in Great Britain than they were here in the United States at the time of their original release as hit singles back in the 1970s; in fact "Candle In The Wind" was the B Side of "Bennie & The Jets".).

5 out of 5 stars First the Beatles, now Elton.......2007-06-04

A few years ago a very successful album of #1 hits by the Beatles brought them back to the forefront of the musical world. Now the same can be said for this compilation of Number 1 hits spanning four decades from Elton John.

Fans of EJ will not really find anything new here (unless they buy the DVD version of this album which contains a number of stage performances). For the casual listener, however, this CD contains a treasure trove of EJ's greatest hits. Bigger fans who are part of the Ipod generation will probably have all of these songs downloaded already, though.

It's a great album of depth which includes the early richly orchestrated hits such as "Your Song", "Tiny Dancer", "Daniel" and "Rocket Man" through his late 70s' and 80s' body of work which included "Yellow Brick Road", "Crocodile Rock", "Don't Go Breakin' My Heart", and 11 other chart toppers.

One last note, I was impressed with Island Music's decision to produce this CD with eco-friendly packaging and hope that other music labels consider to follow suit.

1 out of 5 stars What in the world were they thinking?!.......2007-04-23

I hate commercial compilations! Did they honestly believe that those of us who have followed Elton John and bought his records for forty years wouldn't already have this stuff? Not only that, since we DO already have this stuff, did they not believe that we haven't loaded every album into iTunes and could come up with far better compilations than ANYTHING they could come up with?! Well, I have, and in my opinion if they want people like me to buy CDs anymore they have to do way better than this. And I'm sorry, a cool cover photo is not going to be enough for me.

    No sale!

    4 out of 5 stars The Ever-Eminent EJ.......2007-04-12

To celebrate his 60th birthday, the ever-eminent Elton John released "Rocket Man: The Number Ones," his first single disc greatest hits hodgepodge since "The Very Best of Elton John" was released outside the US in 1990. His first Top 10 LP since 1997 and 16th overall, it outdid many debuts, including the new Jennifer Lopez CD.

One irksome aspect of the disc is that it does not necessarily adhere to the definition of the #1 single. Some songs that did not reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 are included due to reaching the pole position on another chart, such as the Adult Contemporary tally or, in the case of the ever-evocative classic title track of 1973's "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," the now-defunct Cash Box Pop chart.

Meanwhile, some Hot 100 toppers like the Lady Di tribute "Candle In the Wind 1997" and "That's What Friends Are For," his Grammy-winning collaboration with Dionne Warwick, Stevie Wonder and Gladys Knight, do not show up. The same goes for many A/C number ones like "Believe" and the ever-ignored "I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That," his late 80's comeback single.

Still, the disc is perfect for the most casual of Elton listeners, and even includes some non-chart toppers like "Tiny Dancer" and "Your Song" under the heading of "And Other Favorites." Those who simply aren't satisfied by just the likes of "Island Girl" and "Philadelphia Freedom" and want other heavy hitters like "Levon" and "Nikita," however, would be more satisfied with the 2-disc set "Greatest Hits 1970-2002."

The limited edition version contains a bonus DVD with 5 performances from his current Las Vegas stint "The Red Piano" that blow the roof off the house, as well as 5 music videos including the classics "I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues" and "I'm Still Standing," not to mention the incredible visual spectacle that is "Tinderbox" from his underratted 2006 LP "The Captain and the Kid."

    5 out of 5 stars Elton Finest.......2007-04-07

Various track listings have been compiled for this c.d depending on world location, but I think that this U.S edition is by far the best, the remastering is perfect, the only complaint is the cardboard packaging,it would have been better in the usual plastic case.

3 out of 5 stars Not the kind of Country I like.......2007-05-14

I bought this CD for one song I heard and saw Vince Gill interprete
on the fantastic Grand Ole Opry at Carnegie Hall DVD. This bluesy song
called "If You Ever Have Forever In Mind" seemed the "utmost" to me
with a Ray Charles touch. For that reason I wanted a CD where this song
was on. However the rest of the songs are like most country songs since
the early 90's: it ain't country, it's POP except for another two fine
songs and that's the reason why I finally give it 3 stars.

My mom loves Motown, and she requested a Taylor Hicks CD. But while I was browsing in Amazon, I thought, "let me find her something else". She really enjoyes this CD. It takes her back to her glory days!! It was sent very timely, and in great condition, too.

4 out of 5 stars ENTRY LEVEL MOTOWN.......2006-12-05

There is no arguing that Motwn released some great singles, indeed some of he finest pop music of the sixties. Any point of contention would be with the choices here and for the most part these are all good ones. The remastering is welcomed though there are a few rough spots and the packaging is satisfactory (could stand to be more information of the artists and the history of this classic era) All in all a good entry level collection-now at a great priice

    4 out of 5 stars Definitively Motown.......2006-04-06

There is just definitely so much you can arguably say about classic Soul & R&B. While most people today would rather hear performers that seem to be more like pop than soul, especially for those who's rather enjoy Beyonce', Ashanti and Usher. While they seem like they are definitely overdone, the clasic vibes of Motown have still maintained an audience after all these years. While this isn't as bad as the music of today, it still has a distinction that draws in different auidences. Now, that distinction is collaged into one remarkable collection of hits that stretches for so many generations.

Motown 1's, is a well-received compilation that stretches and reflects on the classic eras of Motown throughout nearly five decades. Most of the record does a great job with the distinctive sound of 70's Motown. The collection includes a vast amount of classic tracks that still deliver the feeling of great vibes. The album contains classics like Tears Of A Clown by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, What's Going On by Marvin Gaye, Where Did Our Love Go by the original legendary girl group The Supremes, and Uptight by Steveie Wonder. The compilation also includes Michael McDonald's 2003 rendidtion of the classic Ain't No Mountian High Enough as a bonus. Although the collection does distinctively deliver, there are just so many great #1 classics that weren't displayed like Easy by The Commodores, Super Freak by Rick James, Part-Time Lover by Stevie Wonder, and ABC by the Jackson 5 to name a few.

Despite the fact that there just should've been more added to Motown 1's, it still delivers graciously well as a sampler for anybody who yet hasn't discovered the longeveity of Motown and its impact on music today. This is a delightful collection that still stands out today, as it did back in the 70's, 60's, and all the way through today.

Here is the best of Motown. Here, you get classics recorded by the Supremes,Marvin Gaye,The Temptations,The Four Tops,The Jackson Five and others. Many of these classics were covered by a variety of artists including Michael Bolton and Michael McDonald. McDonald put out his MOTOWN album in 2003 and MOTOWN TWO the following year. The ex-Doobie Brother is quite a soul man. Bolton covered MY GIRL for his TIMELESS-THE CLASSICS VOLUME 2,released in 1999. This album is a must for fans of "oldies but goodies" and R&B. Many of these songs are played on classic R&B radio stations and Music Choice's Classic R&B channel.

With her haunting singing style--a zesty Luso-African mélange of Bessie Smith and Billie Holliday--the Cape Verdean singer Cesaria Evora put the moving and melancholy musical genre called morna on the map with her critically acclaimed recordings Miss Perfumado and Cafe Atlantico. São Vicente is named for Evora's island homeland and is augmented with percussion, rhythm section, strings, and horns. Evora's songs of love and longing range from the classy midtempo strains of "São Vicente Di Longe" and the carnival dances of "Nutridinha" to the beautiful piano/vocal duet "Negue" with Cuban pianist Chucho Valdés. She also swings the Cuban danzon/cha cha cha on "Lindo Mimosa" with the celebrated Cuban group Orquesta Aragon. The singer rocks with R&B handclaps on "Hommen Na Meio Di' Homen" and testifies on the gospel-influenced "Bondade e Maldade." Her duets with Brazilian Caetano Veloso on "Tiempo y Silencio" and "Regresso," and with American legend Bonnie Raitt, add more flavors to this tasty musical dish. --Eugene Holley Jr.

I saw Cesaria at the concert last year and I am also going to see her live this year. It was a really wonderful experience to hear her live. Such a unique and lovely voice.
"Sao Vicente" (or "Sao Vicente Di Longe" is called European version)is my favorite Cesaria album. Beautiful melodies which reminds of tropical islands in the summer... an album for relaxation. A masterpiece! Favorite songs on the album:
    1. Sao Vicente Di Longe - my favorite song on the album. Amazing melody!! This really is a song which will take you to another place... sunny place near the ocean...
    2. Dor Di Amor - Wow! I really like this song. What a rythm... All kinds of instruments are represented here. Very very good song.
    3. Nutridinha - This one was a single... Very catchy and very tropical song... Great rythm.
    4. Tiempo Y Silencio - Very nice ballad. Duet with Pedro Guerra. Really nice melody.
    5. Bondade E Maldade - Great and very catchy.
Esperancia Irisada, Sabor De Pecado, Ponta De Fi, Pic Nic Na Salamansa, Regresso - these are also great song on the album. Really beautiful.
Great voice and great songs which can really take you to another place... somewhere far far away where sun is shining all the time...

    5 out of 5 stars Sao Vicente.......2005-11-11

Yes. Yes! There is an amazing effortlessness in the music, that transports you to some tranquil sad, happy, carefree state. The Cape Verdean Cesaria Evora once again delivers a rich blend of nostalgic African rhythms. These songs evoke a longing, a longing for a love, a longing for home, a longing for an unknown feeling.

5 out of 5 stars Just Perfect Evora and Crew .......2005-01-13

This is an exceptional CD. It's rare that I listen to an entire CD and feel delight at every track. I don't much like Bonnie Raitt, and I like even her duet with Evora on this CD.

The feeling is of warmth, of the tropics; the rhythms are those typical of the trans-Atlantic Portugese musical world, from Portugal, to Cape Verde, to Brazil.

The music is unfailingly sweet and soothing; it caresses you. It is likable music. I think I'd feel comfortable giving this CD as a gift to a friend whose tastes I'm not quite sure of. But "Sao Vicente" is never shallow or cloying; this deceptively quiet music is passionate, intense, and true.

The virtuosity of every aspect of the CD is satisfying. Cesaria Evora is, of course, every bit the powerful pro, and every other performer on the CD is in her class.

There's only one thing I don't like about this CD ... it eventually ends. I could listen to its music for many hours more.

5 out of 5 stars Off the charts!.......2004-08-08

Oh how I love Cesaria! As always when I visit Barnes & Nobles I go to the International music section. As my eyes scanned the wide selection of world music, Cesaria's face stood out. This woman reminds of Celia Cruz -love her too, may her soul rest in peace -I said to myself and I bet she's a wonderful singer. All I needed to hear was the song "Sodade" and that was it. I fell in love with Cesaria's music. Like Celia Cruz she has the voice that captures your attention and sends chills down your spine - so electrifying it's beautiful! I currently one three of Cesaria's albums - THe Very Best of, Cabo Verde, and Voz D'Amor! THe next albums I want to get are Sao Vincente di Longe and Cesaria!
For the past few months I've been listening to Cesaria's music more than anyone elses! I can relate so much to the lyrics of her music and the style being that I'm from the Caribbean. I feel as if I've also lived the Capeverdian experience! I would like to visit someday! Viva Cesaria a reina da morna!

For many gringos, Uruguayan singer/songwriter Jorge Drexler's arrival was announced by his quietly strummed performance of "Al Otro Lado Del Rio" during the closing credits of The Motorcycle Diaries. The song wound up winning an Oscar for Best Original Song, but this kind of acclaim is nothing new for talented Drexler: he's already a major pop star in Latin America. Using South American roots styles for subtle flavor, Drexler's music combines a sophisticated blend of modern production, acoustic guitar-based songs and a myriad of different slightly electronic touches. His voice has the same kind of sensual but thoughtful tone we've come to expect from Caetano Veloso. While the title track sounds like it could be one Coldplay's sweeping anthems, Drexler gets verbal for the talk/singing "Guitarra Y Vos," which a real highlight. Longtime fans will consider Eco, his seventh album overall, up to his high standards, but this is a real eye opener for those who are just coming to the table. --Tad Hendrickson

    Album Description

During the span of his successful music career, Uruguayan singer/song writer Jorge Drexler has maintained top position in the Latin pop genre. Jorge Drexler is well known not only for his interpretation, but also for his talent in writing great songs. The success of his album Eco (which was released in the 90's throughout Spain, Mexico, Chile, Uruguay, and Argentina), catapulted this artist to superstar status.

I happened to stumble across this album and artist. I feel so lucky I did. Jorge Drexler composition and music are superb. I will highly recommend anybody to buy from this great artist.

    5 out of 5 stars six stars.......2007-05-25

This should be your first Jorge Drexler recording. If you like Paul Simon, Caetano Veloso, Joao Gilberto, Jobim, or John Lennon, this can not be too highly recommended. In the end it may be seen as one of the finest records of mellow music of this decade. Knowing Spanish is a plus, and this will give you reason to learn, but even instrumentally this collection shines. There is not a bad composition, and several true gems. Jorge draws on broad influences yet is contemporary. Some are tangos and milongos made modern, in other places there are stunning allusions to Simon's vocal and musical poetry, Lennonistic harmonies (even at times I imagine the Beach Boys), soft Brazilian rhythms that have as much power as rock and roll, a voice that challenges Caetano and promises to heal with a deep worldly philosophy. The collaborations with the talented US pianist Ben Sidran and his son Leo are perfect; this is not a collection of songs but a whole. My children (20's) love it. For me this record promises to rank with Simon's Rhythm of the Saints, with Harrison's All Things Must Pass, with the Grateful Dead's American Beauty. You will listen to it for decades. The modern musical center shifts farther south, to the benefit of all. We should all know where Uruguay is. Lift a Mate to Jorge... Todo se transforma.

5 out of 5 stars A Gift from the South.......2007-04-03

Based upon the Academy award to Al Otro Lado del Rio as best song of the year, I decided to purchase this album by Jorje Drexel. What a treat for the ears. This is one of my favorite collections of tunes. I'm quite a fan of world music but I'd never heard of this musician. Now I've recommended him, and this album, to all my friends, especially those who love South America. One aspect I've enjoyed is Drexler's particular accent to Spanish.

5 out of 5 stars superb, gets better with every listen.......2006-11-10

we had barely heard of jorge drexler until we decided to get this cd. now we hear it very very often. it's beautiful and insiduously catchy music even if one doesnt understand the lyrics. with the lyrics, it is absolute poetry with timely reflections. am so glad to discover that this type of music is still being created. gracias jorge!

4 out of 5 stars ECO - Appealing to even non-Spanish speaking fans!.......2006-03-10

I don't speak Spanish but I love Drexler's musica! I came across this CD via his song "Al Otro Lado del Rio" from the Motorcycle Diaries. La cancion "Eco" is soothing and smooth. The third track "Todo se transforma" es mi favorita. His guitar and sweet vocals, upbeat melody and quick lyrics make this song the best one on the album. I'm working on my Spanish just so I can sing along! Other great tracks are "Guitarra y Vos" and "Transporte." He enjoys mixing modern music with more authentic Latin sounds in a few of his songs. And of course, "Al Otro Lado del Rio" is an award winning song, with its quiet and relaxing sounds. Drexler's "Eco" is a treasure of vocals, melodies and instrumental gifts for the ears of all listeners - Spanish-speaking and non-Spanish speaking alike.

Here, at a bargain price, is a real treat: the lively, elegant, musically alert Andrew Manze leading and playing a handful of wonderful Vivaldi concerti preceded by a little Sinfonia. The concerti, all backed up by the usual strings, are for various combinations of instruments. Two are straight violin concerti (playful and bright). One is for violin and three echo violins that repeat what the lead violin has done, but at a distance from the other performers (very entertaining). The most beautiful is for lute and viola d'amore (a gentle, dark texture). The CD ends with one scored for recorders, chalumeaux, mandolins, therobos, cello, and special violins, which is a riot of sound, with a particularly jaunty first movement. The disc's title refers to a visit to Venice in 1740 by Frederick Christian, the Prince Elector of Saxony, during which Vivaldi's music was performed. He was a lucky prince, and we're lucky to have this CD. As usual, Manze and the Academy of Ancient Music are superb. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars Music for a historical event.......2007-01-13

Most Vivaldi recordings contain programs selected either by the medium (all bassoon concertos, for example) or by the opus number (all the concertos from Opus 8). This one is utterly unique, and that fact--in addition to the splendid performances--makes it especially interesting. The CD contains music performed (and at least partly written for) a specific event in Venice--a visit by Prince Frederick Christian, the son of the King of Poland. He was known to be very interested in music, so 3 special concerts were offered during his visit. One of these, on March 21, 1740, was organized and directed by Vivaldi.
The evening's program included a vocal piece--a serenata called "The Chorus of Muses" by the great playwright Carlo Goldoni--with its sections introduced by four concertos composed by Vivaldi. (The music of the serenata is lost, and even the name of the composer is unknown.)
Vivaldi's contribution to the evening was commissioned by the Pietà, the orphanage whose all-female orchestra he had made famous earlier in his career. These concertos may very well be his last works, because soon after the festive performance, he moved to Vienna, where he died in poverty the following year.
So listening to this recording not only lets us hear fine performances of some late Vivaldi works (still amazing for the variety of scoring and compositional approaches after having composed so much music over so many years), but it also transports us, in a kind of musical time machine, to a period and lifestyle that has certainly disappeared in the last 250 years. We know from his diary that the Prince particularly enjoyed one "echo" concerto (in which several instruments were seated at a distance for special echo effects).
It is an unusual and delightful way to encounter Vivaldi.

5 out of 5 stars What elegance and grace is contained here.......2005-10-12

The Academy of Ancient Music has done a wonderful job with this CD of the 4 Concertos written by Vivaldi in honor of the vist of Prince Frederick Christian, Prince of Poland, to Venice. The works were spread out over several evenings so that they could be enjoyed by the illustrious guests. The Academy of Ancient Music does a superb job with this collection of music that required use of instruments rarely used today.

Sinfonia in G major dazzles us with joyful pomp. The third movement echoes the Autumn section of the Four Seasons by capturing the sound of the harvest folk dance.

Violin Concerto in E-flat major is incredibly well constructed, almost mathematical in composition, with passages building one upon the other. The first movement builds gradually but the third movement slips and slides like children in a playground.

Concerto in D minor has courtly beinnings. Like much of Vivaldi, the violins sometimes are allowed to take the foreground with a somewhat rustic power, yet they are usually balanced by the pure elegance of the other instruments and melodies that echo with intensity. The lute accompanies the violin and other string instruments with its Renaissance sound. Lute strings individually plucked slow the piece and increase the intensity of anticipation in the second movement.

In Concerto in A major, Vivaldi uses violins with three echo violins. In the CD program they explain that when this piece was played for the Polish Prince, the primary violinist was visible but that they echo violinists were hidden around the concert hall, which I can only guess was a delightful and playful game to play with the listening audience of the time. In this concerto, the violins sound so birdlike as they echo each other's songs back and forth. In the final movement, Allegro, the violins boldly and sweetly play their echo game, no longer playing birds but mellowing into instruments of joy.

In Violin Concerto in C Major we hear graceful refrains that build like the Spring section of the Four Seasons.

In the Concerto in C Major we hear the finest piece on the whole CD in terms of complexity and orchestration. The recorder is used along with instruments called chalumeaux and theorbos. The grand march sound of the Allegro molto subsides long enough to hear the wonderful wind instruments complimented by mandolins, giving a delightful break from the violins. I think this concerto is my favorite on the CD, with the warm sounds of rare instruments permeating the piece.Yet, how can one pick a favorite from this wonderful collection of music.

Vivaldi is so elegant, so graceful and balanced. I love his music because it puts demands only on my ear the way Matisse puts demands only on my eyes. He transports me.

5 out of 5 stars Diversity is your best bet.......2005-09-03

The final work on this superb CD is one of Vivaldi's true masterworks. Like his incredibly famous Four Seasons, this work has true inspiration and a sound that is second to none. This Concerto in C is written for an astonishing array of diverse instruments. My favorite is the one that sounds just like a clarinet, although the clarinet, as we know it today, was not invented until decades later. This is a work that musicians just seem to absolutely adore. This is my third recording of this piece and in each case the performance has had amazing enthusiasm. It is a work that should be in everybody's library. Unless you have a strong dislike for the baroque or Vivaldi, you should enjoy this music. The rest of the music here is standard Vivaldi. It is interesting and has wonderful sounds, but not really inspired. However, at the budget price, the CD is well worth the money for the one masterpiece it has.

    5 out of 5 stars Just sublime.......2004-11-05

I bought this fantastic CD over a year ago and it became my most cherished 'Classics' possession. Then thieves broke in to my home and stole it along with many others. I've finally had it replaced by the insurance company, and am now revisting the beautiful sounds of this program. Superb playing, great collection of works, and the usual sublime recording quality from a HM production. This has to be one of the essential Vivaldi recordings, especially valued given the lower price.
