Capoeira Angola, formerly a regional Brazilian form of self-defense and dance, has its roots in African traditions and is becoming popular in urban centers around the world, growing into a widely taught art form and philosophy. This call-and-response singing is accompanied by compelling rhythms played on berimbau and percussion instruments that express and control the performance of the Capoeira fight/dance. What an excellent CD!.......2004-11-17

I had this CD reccommended to me by my Capoeira Angola instructor, and boy was he right. I own a lot of Capoeira CDs (mostly Regional music), and this is one of the best.

Frankly I was suprised to find that the CD contains some 39 tracks!!! The best of which are definitely the live tracks (I don't usualy care for live music recordings, but the sound quality of these is excellent, and really conveys the energy of the roda.

I had previously neglected to mention that the CD liner book contains a history of the art of capoeira as well as all of the song lyrics, and their translations (in english!)... That alone is worth the purchase, and makes this CD an extremely useful resource for anyone trying to learn the songs for classess (think text book).

Good stuff, a must own for anyone interested in Capoeira Angola.

Awesome Capoeira CD.......2003-04-04

I absolutely love this CD. The insert that comes with it gives a lot of useful information and it actually helped me brush up on my Portuguese. I've used this CD on long trips (I am in a performing arts group) and though no one else in the van understands why it keeps me awake when driving for 5-8 hours across country, there you will see me singing and smiling down the highway. I love this CD and recommend it for music aficionados and capoeiristas alike.

excellent choice for learners of angola!.......2002-09-02

this is a great cd for both capoeiristas and world music listeners alike. it is the music for angola which is the more acrobatic capoeira. it is well recorded, beautiful and clear. i find that the music both gives you energy and helps you to focus, i often listen to it while working on my illustrations. i highly recommend!

I lived in Brasil and spent many years with Bahianos playing Capoeira on the beach, no school or teacher, just friends. I learned more from them than I've seen being taught in any school in the U.S. This music is just as traditional as the ones I played on my berimbau as we played through the night and day. It is a must for all capoeira practitioner who have a taste for the real thing.Buy it. Trust me. You'll love it

Great Beginner's CD.......2001-09-17

This was the first Capoeira CD that I bought. It has excellent liner notes that give a good background of Capoeira. However, what I found most helpful are the lyrics to the songs that are also printed in the liner notes, along with translations in English. It has helped me learn a lot of the songs our group uses.

A must have CD for any Angoleiro..........2005-09-01

As a practicing capoeira Angoleiro I was interested in this CD, but purchased it in the "blind" as there were No reviews available whatsoever... Fortunately I was very pleasantly suprised.

This is an excellent CD of traditional capoeira angola songs. The CD is broken down into sets, featuring the typical ladaninha, chula, and multiple corridos. Each "set" is performed by one of the 5 different lead vocalists featured on this CD (with the typical chorus, and batteria backing), and each is punctuated with a well performed musical instrumental (Iauna, Cavalaria, etc.).

The sound quality is extremely good, with exceptional performances on the tracks by Cobra Mansa (tracks 1-7), Poloca (tracks 18-23), and on tracks (32-38, sorry I cannot remeber the singer's name, but he is excellent!). The batteria is fantastic throughout, and provides great energy to the music.

I consider this to be one of the best Capoeira Angola CD's in my collection for it's variation in songs, performers, and excellent instrument playing. Highly reccommendable for training or just casual listening (it will have you singing along!). A definite must have for any Angoleiro. :)

Good CD, but a little short.......2001-04-16

I originally heard this CD @ my university's music library, and at the time i was really impressed. Upon receiving the CD i listened to it quit a few times, and each time i start to get into it, the brevity of the album quickly ruined my groove. But it is definitely a solid purchase and i would recommend it to anyone, the only problem you may have is coping w/ the 26min length of the album.

I consider we need to know how different Capoeira academies play "Toques" and (why not?) the way they sing and play musical instruments; in order to getting better as Capoeirists.

By Hearing this CD you can feel yourself as if you were inside the Roda because members of Academia de Capoeira Angola San Jorge enjoy a lot what they do. Performance of Mestre Caicara is simply Excellent. He's a good singer and, of course, he also do enjoy singing and playing, you can check this in some Ladainhas when Mestre Caicara laughs a little between phrase and phrase. I can assure you enjoy this CD too.
