4 out of 5 stars A very well kept secret.......2005-09-09

I originally owned Garland Jeffrey's 'Ghost Writer', which forms a significant part of this anthology on vinyl and it was rarely off my turntable. 28 years later it sounds as fresh as the first time I heard it. The mystery to me is how Garland Jeffreys never got the recognition he deserves for these sharp, witty, beautifully crafted songs with their sharp NY streetwise lyrics, reggae influence, great arrangements with contributions from Michael Brecker and Steve Gadd to name but two of the sidemen on this long-overdue retrospective. Well done to Raven Records for re-releasing this gem. Now do the right thing and give Garland Jeffreys the recogintion her deserves.

2 out of 5 stars The Wrong Version of "Christine".......2004-04-09

I'm surprised the other reviewers didn't mention it... but this Aussie compilation has a different, slow version of "Christine" -- not the upbeat gem that appeared on the American version of Escape Artist. Since the fast version of "Christine" is one of my favorite Garland Jeffreys songs, I was very disappointed with this collection. I'll buy Escape Artist on CD and listen to my vinyl until they release a U.S. "best of" collection.

4 out of 5 stars Why leave out "Spanish Town" & "Why O"??.......2004-03-29

Great choice of tracks but why did they leave out Spanish Town & Why O, from Ghostwriter? Spanish Town has got to be one of the best tracks that he's put down and any collection is incomplete without it! For that reason, this only gets 4 stars.

5 out of 5 stars ** Great Intro to a Seriously Talented Rocker **.......2003-09-19

For any fans of singer-songwriters like Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Graham Parker, James Taylor, John Hiatt, or Warren Zevon, you will find Garland Jeffreys to be a serious treat.

This talented artist deserves attention for those who appreciate well-crafted songs and a great voice. Starting with his 1970's album with Grinder's Switch, you may think you're listening to The Band with a young Mick Jagger on vocals. By the late 1970's Jeffreys moved firmly into the mainstream rock arena with the superb Ghostwriter album, of which this CD has a few tracks. By the 1980's, bits of reggae filtered into his sound, most evident on his 1981 Escape Artist (of which this CD has 4 songs, but buy the whole album on Amazon for only $6.98!). The Best Of CD has a few good tracks from 1982's Guts for Love, which includes one of my favorite rock tunes, Real Man, with GE Smith on guitar.

Jeffreys was always supported by excellent backup singers and musicians, so check out the liner notes. After a personal hiatus for nearly ten years, he is currently touring again, cut a single for the new Bruce Springsteen tribute album (an incedible version of "Streets of Philadelphia"), and may make his own new album. You won't go wrong with any of his available CDs, particularly his early 90's "Don't Call Me Buckwheat", which is not on this 1977-83 Best Of CD.

But buy this album for an introduction to the talented Jeffreys -you won't be disappointed, and you'll discover one of rock's true gems. ...

4 out of 5 stars Great To See This Music Available On CD, But...........2002-11-23

Very little of Garland Jeffreys output from the 70s & 80s has been issued on CD, so it's great to see that Raven has seen fit to release this compilation. The following original albums are represented: "Ghost Writer" ('77), "One-Eyed Jack" ('78), "American Boy and Girl" ('79), "Escape Artist" ('81), and "Guts For Love" ('82). There is nothing from Garland's 1972 eponymous debut album. There are 8 tracks from "Ghost Writer", 4 from "Escape Artist", and the others get 2 or 3 each. While I'm pleased with the existence of this collection, I must quibble with some of the song choices. Several essential, and obvious, selections are absent: "Spanish Town" from "Ghost Writer", "City Kids" from "American Boy And Girl", and "Mystery Kids" from "Escape Artist" are only the most glaring examples. There was an earlier collection, "Matador And More", issued on CD in 1992, which was limited to only 12 tracks and only covered the 1977-1979 timeframe, but it did a much better job of picking the highlights from that period. This newer compilation is more generous with 20 songs, including material from the two later albums ('81-'82) that are not represented on the 1992 collection, so overall it's the best that anyone has done yet at providing Garland Jeffrey's fans with his early music on CD, but in light of the omissions, I'm still glad I have the original albums on vinyl. For anyone not particularly familiar with Garland's music, his biggest hit, "Wild In The Streets", is included here, as are many other choice cuts including "Cool Down Boy", "New York Skyline", "Matador", "Christine", and his great cover of "96 Tears". His music in general is literate, groundbreaking, streetwise, passionate, soulful rock 'n' roll, and he threw healthy doses of reggae and other world beat influences into the mix back before it had become fashionable to do so. Four stars due to the song selection, but Garland is certainly worthy of the five-star collection that nobody has yet managed to assemble.

5 out of 5 stars Saints Be Praised!.......2002-04-17

This is a cliche, but this is a must-have compilation, with all of the Saints' recorded studio material on it, arranged chronologically from their seminal debut LP "(I'm) Stranded" to their third and final album. These Australian punkers cranked out amazingly intense punk rock that will leave you slack-jawed. Their sound is similar to the Ramones, in terms of simple, fast chords and driving rhythms, but their subject matter and approach is entirely distinct and memorable.

I have a lot of favorite tunes on this compilation, but am particularly fond of "Demolition Girl", "Nights in Venice" (a 5-minute+ punk apocalypse; had to be amazing to have seen this one played live; it builds and builds to atomic power), "Do The Robot" (instantly memorable riff that grabs you by the collar and doesn't let go), "Know Your Product" (insolent and mocking), "(I'm) Misunderstood", and "Every Day's a Holiday..." (with a catchy R&B horn riff that'll have you jumping up and down). These alone are worth buying this CD, because they're SO good, but I enjoy the majority of the songs on this compilation.

The first CD has the real thumpers on it, while the second CD doesn't have nearly as many songs I liked (but if you like brassy R&B, you'll be happy with it). The alternate takes of songs are an added bonus, with both versions of "Untitled" being cool.

What is really cool about them is that not only did they rock mightily, but their lyrics critiqued consumerist society (and advertising, particularly) in nifty, imaginative ways. They were a magnificently melodic band, with heaps of attitude and energy.

Their sound really changed through their three albums, from straight-up Ramones-inspired punk (although the liner notes take pains to point out how they were not influenced by the Ramones, but judge for yourself; I think at their best, they were better, personally!) to this R&B retro sound that the Jam would ride to success, but it's all innovative and has stayed fresh, vital, and very necessary for the past 25+ years.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Anthology of Great Band.......2002-04-16

I won't add too much to what is already said here except to note that this set is what all reissue anthologies should be: comprehensive, well documented and affordable. Kudos to Raven for this great release.

Do not let the "punk" label throw you off the Saints. They did indeed burst upon the world in the midst of that scene and using some of the musical lexicon of the time. Unlike most of the punk bands, however, they grew musically. And they did so fast, without any jarring loss of identity. It's amazing that the first album "(I'm)Stranded" went over so well commercially while the next two did not. The first album necessarily dates itself a bit but "Eternally Yours" and even more so "Prehistoric Sounds" are timeless.

This a thirty well-spent bucks. Have fun.

5 out of 5 stars absolutely vital punk rock.......2001-03-27

The Saints get passed over a lot when it comes to the origins of punk rock. People either think of the 50's inspired rapid simplicity of the USA's Ramones, the sneering nihilism of the UK's Sex Pistols, or the thoughtful rebellion of The Clash. No one recalls the brilliant garage infused punk of Australia's Saints.

Possibly because, while the Ramones and Pistols/Clash were all exploring relatively new territory, The Saints mixed a blend of classic bar blues and garage rock with the attitude, speed, and devil-may-care attitude of the late-70's punk scene. The results were an energy charged dose of classic punk. Though their lead singer Chris Bailey would assume the Saints mantle and go on to record several more introspective and soul-searching albums, you won't have to worry about them here. All of the material gathered here is from a time when The Saints were all punk and no dreary songs about Ghost Ships (Saints fans of subsequent albums will understand that reference!)

Here, on this magnificent 2-disc set is EVERY track off of The Saints' first 3 albums: I'm Stranded, Prehistoric Sounds, and Eternally Yours. The former and the latter are guaranteed punk classics, and getting them both in one package deal along with the middle-child as well as a few singles and unreleased tracks makes this the ultimate no-brainer for anyone remotely interested in hearing what punk rock originally sounded like, beyond the buzz of the Ramones and the bile of the UK punk bands.

I would encourage prospective buyers to snap this up while you can, because a top-rank collection like this WILL go out of print just when you get around to wanting it. And possibly the best thing about this material is that it WILL stand the test of time, not only because of its relevance to early punk, but merely because it is GOOD QUALITY MUSIC. You don't need to have a manic-panic dyed mohawk to enjoy this stuff. If you're a music fan, you are in for a treat (and I envy you greatly if you are hearing this stuff for the first time!)

These tracks will outlive us all.

5 out of 5 stars Original and best.......2000-11-13

This collection of the bands first three albums [plus singles is absolutely essential for fans [a lot of this material has never been available in the U.S before]It features the original[ and in my opinion best] version of the band with Ed Kuepper and Chris Bailey.Kuepper has gone on to be one of Australia's most prolific & innovative artists, and Bailey has done a number of quite good albums under the name of The Saints but this is where it started.Great value

5 out of 5 stars WILD ABOUT THE SAINTS.......2000-11-03

I must say "The Saints" have been one of my favorite bands since I saw them live in 80's.

This selection of songs from the first 3 Albums, I consider a must have. From the classic "Im stranded" which I noticed is on the download, it's a shame "Know your product" was not included as it is probably one of their best.

It was Bob Geldof who said that the face of rock music in the 1970s was altered by three bands: punk pioneers the Sex Pistols, the Ramones and THE SAINTS.

I suggest you give it a listen you won't be disappointed.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Great pop/rock album.......2006-01-05

I disagree with many of the reviewers. I am an orginal Runaways fan and got to see them live. I love their music but also love all of Cherie's solo stuff. I think this record has a lot of energy and showcases what a beautiful and unique voice Cherie has. I bought this record in 1980 when it first came out (as Messin with the boys) and wore it out. I am so happy to have it on CD now. This isn't Runaways style music but it is possible to love both unless you are really narrowminded.

    4 out of 5 stars Great songs..poor tracking though.......2003-10-21

First of all, I still have the LP "Messing With The Boys" and always liked it. Being a long time "Runaways" fan, I have been looking for a CD release of this album! Well, here it is! Unfortunetly, the tracking between songs is choppy! That 's a major let down. The track "Beauty Is Only Skin Deep" has static too! Bummer! Although, this CD is worth the 4 stars JUST on it's including the Runaways tracks "Hollywood Dreams", "Strawberry Fields Are Forever" & "Here Comes the Sun" from the rare "Flaming Schoolgirls" LP. Sounding GREAT! Right from the masters! Runaways, Cherie Curie & Jettheads gotta get this!
I wonder if the other CD has better tracking. I guess I have to buy that one too to find out! To be continued......

    4 out of 5 stars A decent import quickie.......2003-01-19

An Australian pressing of Cherie & Marie's "Messin' With the Boys", augumented with bonus tracks from Cherie's solo outing "Beauty's Only Skin Deep", a nice B-side ("Longer Than Forever", co-written by Marie), a Runaways outtake (the cute "Hollywood Dream"), and two very fine Beatles covers Cherie used as auditioning material for a spot in the movie "Sgt. Pepper's" (she didn't get the part). Quite a package for one cheap price, though Kim Fowley's acerbic liner notes are probably more enjoyable than the music, which occasionally sounds stilted or dated. 'B'

1 out of 5 stars Young and Sleepy.........2001-12-06

A passionless recording. Lacks any of the drive, pulse, ambition, edge, rage and fun of The Runaways. Corny songs that the artists don't believe in as they sing them...so how can we?

    4 out of 5 stars young & wild.......1999-12-01

Ex-Runaways vocalist teams up with twin sister Marie on this album. Although panned by critics, this album features superior vocal and instrumental talent. The music Cherie recorded with the Runaways (featuring Joan Jett and Lita Ford) leaned more toward new wave, this album offers a broader range of rock and roll, landing more between Pat Benatar and Stevie Nicks. Many of the musicans on this album recorded with 80's superband Toto. Would like to hear more from this duo.

Welcome to the Virtual World of Sherbet Live Through the Years. For the First Time Ever, this CD Documents their Magnificent Career and Contribution to the History of Australian Music. A Lot of Time was Invested in Upgrading the Audio Quality. The Monaural Recordings of the Early Shows were Carefully Extracted from the Original Videos, Transferred to Protools Where the Sound was Improved. They were Mastered and Resynched Onto the Videos. Some of the Later Concerts were Recorded on 16 Track Tape, which was a Lucky Find. These were Transferred to Protools and Re-developed, Re-mixed, Mastered and Re-synched Back to the Live Performances Featured on this New CD. Tracks 1-5 were Recorded Live at the Sydney Opera House; Tracks 6-12: Live at Festival Hall, Melbourne; Track 13: Live at the New Victoria Theatre, London; Tracks 14-18: Live at Hordern Pavillion, Sydney.
