The best samba can be virile, lyrical, or comical, distilled microcosms of daily life in the slums of Rio between Carnivals. The singer should ideally express playfulness, sensuality, sadness, longing, and imagination, but not many mainstream Brazilian artists are capable of such ecstatic poignancy. This is one of many reasons why these two albums demand to be heard. The samba is bound to survive in one way or another, but this time capsule has captured its unvarnished soul. The seven tracks by Velha Guarda da Portela (Old Guard of the Portela samba school) are especially amazing. These old-timers' voices have the rare bluesy patina that only long years of untrained and spendthrift use can create, and the instrumentals are as remarkable for their skill as they are wondrous to hear.
