At night after work, after eating a simple meal and sharing the customary Mate (popular herbal tea), los peones (the workers), typically would start dancing and singing improvisations or telling stories of their ancestries, usually to the strums and melodies of a European guitar.

The passionate musical expressions of these new people (who are known as Los Gauchos or Criollos) find their voice in the solo guitar of Argentine master, Roberto Lara. This is an absolutely fantastic collection.

The tunes are wonderful. Played with an accuracy of a machine, and pasion and feeling of an angel.

The clarity and style is quite unique.

Ever since I got this CD, I been on the look out for similar calibre music. So far without success. I'll keep looking.

This outstanding collection scores in threee areas. If you are an afficionado of the classic acoustic guitar, this is a jewel of both technique and style; one can listen and admire the virtuosity of the artist. If you enjoy the traditional music of latin america, this brings to life the traditions of the argentine pampas in a most elegant manner. Not least, as pure listening enjoyment, for quiet relaxation, or as background for reading a good book, this is tops.

Steve Novacek's performances of the pieces on this CD are the best you'll find. He plays them with warmth and technical brilliance. The Romance Criollo is one of my favorite pieces by Jorge Morel - a real masterpiece of modern counterpoint.

Noguiera's "Choro Chorado" is another beautiful piece. I heard Steve play it as an encore in concert once - it was enthralling. I highly recommend this CD as one of the best recordings I've ever heard.
