Robert De Cormier's remarkable arrangement and Marie Spar Dymit's and Lynette Johnson's pure vocals of "Johnny Has Gone for a Soldier" are well worth the price of the entire CD.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible..Worth 30 stars.......2007-05-16

The Dale Warland Singers are my benchmark by which I judge all other choirs. The uniformity of sound, blend, and precise entrances, uniformity are incredible - almost inhuman. Excluding the all male Chanticleer from the roster, this was the finest choir in America. Now that they have broken up, buy all of their CD's you won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Superb singing matched with superb arrangements.......2004-07-03

A project like this one inevitably highlights the skill of arrangers, and Dale Warland has selected some of the most talented anywhere. Most of these selections will be familiar to listeners, but I doubt most people have heard, for example, "Red River Valley" in Carol Barnett's haunting version here, and ditto for her magnificent "Deep River."

The disc opens with a spectacular, panoramic "Shenandoah" that takes maximum advantage of the Dale Warland Singers' refined sound, and things only get better (if that's possible). Other favorites are a cheery, fizzing "Nelly Bly" and Mark Keller's strong reworking of Stephen Foster's "Hard Times Come Again No More."

Throughout the recording, the freshness of the arrangements is matched by the irresistible singing. This group is known for its outstanding performances and recordings, but this must be counted as one of their all-time best. The sound quality is terrific, capturing the gorgeous blend and precision of the group in a natural-sounding acoustic. Just stunning.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful music.......2003-07-03

I bought this CD after hearing a few of the recordings on our local NPR radio station. I was not disappointed in any of the selections. Very beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music, Yet There Is No There Here.......2003-01-13

The Dale Warland Singers (DWS) are among the relatively few musical professionals, who by their aesthetic standards and demonstrated artistry, have taken the less traveled and narrow road to exemplary artistic excellence.

The sound quality and acoustics are excellently engineered in this 20-bit original recording. The most delicately blend and inflection of the singers' voice can be heard. This sheaf of choral works has once existed in real space and time in the kaleidoscopic folklife of past generations. In recording the "Blue Wheat", the 40-member DWS, the creme de la creme of professional choral ensembles, has elevated the common oral tradition of American folk music into a rarified choral art form a capella "in the style of the chapel."

If the soul of the DWS is a capella singing, then Warland and the arrangers are the wings of the same soul. Among the kapellmeisters whose arrangements have graced this folksong anthology are the late Norman Luboff and Roger Wagner. Also included in this album are contemporary arrangements by other esteemed composers: John Rutter (conductor of The Cambridge Singers), Carol Barnett (the DWS resident composer from 1992 to 2001), and Stephen Paulus.

Gertrude Stein is famous for saying of her childhood home, Oakland, California, "When you get there, there's no there there." Purportedly, Stein opined this city by the San Francisco Bay lacked a defining sense of place. Bel canto notwithstanding, the folk melodies of "Blue Wheat" invoke a longing for something no longer possible. The abyss between the America today and the its past is impossible to bridge. Already, we have yielded to the abstractness of political correctness. Our past is either neglected, actively destroyed, or selectively museumed. We do not live in an understood land and culture. There is no there here in the presence of this music. It is only the poignancy of the moment that these beautifully rendered tunes live in our mind. We have to accept this reality as part and parcel of our rootlessness.

If the Oakland Raiders do make it to and win the Superbowl in 2003, there is a there there for some in the football community, albeit fleeting.

My mother died suddenly last February, and even though I had listened to The Color of Light many times before then, it helped me tremendously in my grieving and healing. I have also sent this CD to friends suffering from cancer and other illness, and everyone has thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful music. This is my favorite of Dana Cunningham's CD's because I think it's the most complicated and interesting for me. I listen to many types of music, and for me, this albumn is true joy.

Album Description

This is the debut album from a high-energy dance act from Sweden that combines pounding trance beats with soaring synth melodies and dreamy vocals. Most of the singing comes from a beautiful young woman named Zandra, but other guests pop up, including Casey "3PM" from the band Wideband Network, and there are some intense instrumentals thrown into the fray as well. The music of Nevarakka fits into the new breed of melodic dance music, where synthpop melodies combine with modern trance for a beautiful and infectious sound. Fans of acts like Delerium, Schiller, Blank & Jones, ATB, etc. will find similarities, as well as new surprises.

I was pleasantly surprised by this CD. I took a chance on this CD and loved it all the way through. I would rate it in my top ten over the last 12 months.

5 out of 5 stars A High Energy Dance Album including vocals of Casey.......2005-06-09

This is a very high-energy album that includes the vocals of Casey from The Wideband Network, and the vocals of Zandra. From my own opinion, I think that my favorite three songs are "Secrets", "I am trying", and "Why". I would recommend this album to anyone looking for a a high-energy dance album. And also, it is my favorite synthpop album. I would say that Nevarakka is a rising star!

Works best without words. Sondheim's lyrics are badly sung and their meaning undermined. Otherwise fine.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2003-02-26

This album was a very pleasant surprise. Loving You - Nancy Wilson And Peabo Bryson, stands out as the best track but the entire album is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Sondheim at his best.......2003-02-06

Superb performances by Peabo Bryson, Nancy Wilson and Holly Cole are the highlight of this Sondheim collection. Sad to say, I was unaware of how prolific Sondheim was for so many years. A true blend of vocals and musicals from the soulful duet by Bryson and Wilson to the rather avante-garde stylings of Herbie Hancock. You may like some songs better than the others (I did). But, I can guarantee that if you like any of the principals involved, you'll consider the CD worthwhile. I have owned it for years and it is still near the top of the list of CD's that I listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Great Jazz CD- Sondheim or not.......2002-07-09

Even if you're not a big Sondheim fan (and not everyone is despite what some fanatics think) you'll love this album. The jazz interpretations bring nuances to his music that will surprise you.
If you are a Sondheim nut you have to own this one. The duets are the albums assets but there is not a weak link in the set.

4 out of 5 stars A joyous adventure.......2001-04-04

I found this jazz CD to be a delightful mixture of straight ahead jazz, vocal arrangements, and "smooth" tunes. The music is quite listenable and soothing. It has something for everyone who likes jazz. But the purist might find fault with its commercial appeal; I, for one, just sat back and relished.

5 out of 5 stars Intelligent, low-fi, addicting........2006-06-05

Jennifer's going to be big. She has an album due out on Matador in the near future, so if you want to brag that you caught onto her first, get this record. Filled with smart, heartfelt lyrics illuminated by O'Connor's slightly husky voice, the mood varies from the upbeat on songs like 'Hole In the Road' to the beautiful, haunting strains of 'The Color and the Light'. Overall, a near-perfect collection of low-fi indie rock; just gorgeous.

1 out of 5 stars THIS CD IS RETARDED.......2006-01-30

Everyone who listens to this cd must have ALOT of time on their hands. The singer and the music are tasteless! All of the people who listen to this cd need to get a life or atleast go watch viva la bam or sumthing !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If i could i would give it zero stars!!!!!!!!!!! I have more fun watchin grass grow than listening to this cd !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Jennifer O'Connor.......2005-10-13

The title track is better than any single song Azure Ray have ever made. The album flows really well, as O'Connor's smoky voice suthes the listener into a dreamy fog. (how poetic)

5 out of 5 stars Do yourself a favor and buy this CD.......2005-06-22

I've seen Jennifer play a few times acoustically, and own her last self-titled release, which is also acoustic. So I was totally unprepared for the full band sound on "The Color and the Light". While she's been drawing comparisons to early Liz Phair in the press, I hear much more (and it probably helps that I don't own any Liz Phair releases to limit those comparisons).

The music on "The Color and the Light," whether it is the guitar twang of "Beg or Borrow Days" the hushed, acoustic guitar of "Saved" or the layered, electric guitar on "Yer Copout" (which reminds me of Mazzy Star), serves as an excellent accompaniment to her lyrics. There is a variety of musical styles here, from the heavier fuzz-rock guitar on "Million Dollar Smile" to the softly acoustic "The Thought of You," but the lyrical thread that runs through the CD draws everything together. Many of those lyrics deal with motivation and stagnation; the desire to want so much more and how we often serve as our own best enemy.

Probably "Yer Copout" and "Why Don't You Do" (in which I hear early Suzanne Vega) are my favorite songs on the CD, although I really don't hear any lesser tracks on this release.

This is one of those indie gems that I hope more people hear. Jennifer has a real talent to my ears, and more people deserve to be exposed to her music. I have probably played this CD almost every day since I got it; and keep hearing more on it. I am really looking forward to her touring this summer.

5 out of 5 stars cmj review.......2005-06-03

Now that Liz is lost in the Matrix, Brooklyn's Jennifer O'Connor (originally from Connecticut) picks up the ball and buck-n-runs with it. Right from the get-go, The Color And The Light explodes with some of the most compelling mid-fi indie since Exile; O'Connor shares Phair's deep register, droll delivery and the endearingly limited vocal range that enhances expressiveness rather than hinders it. While these parallels serve as a savvy calling card, O'Connor quickly outpaces them. She's a more proficient guitarist and (should we go there?) whip-smart songwriter, as evidenced on sparse tracks like the haunting "Saved." She's flexible enough to spike the mix with an occasional twanger, and descriptive enough to breathe lyrical life into boy/girl battles without resorting to sexual bluntness. On the album's second half, O'Connor relies on sheets of melodic feedback for a gauzy dream-pop effect, vowing on the sparkling "Beg Or Borrow Days," "I'm gonna drink black coffee all night long/Until I write the perfect song." Based on the trajectory of The Color And The Light, she may not even need as much as a venti.
