The Who's mighty catalog of beautiful, poignant, and often silly pop songs bashed out with Cassius Clay finesse has suffered in the past at the hands of multiple, butcher-shop best-ofs and horrible packaging. But this thrilling band--undeniably one of ye classicke rocke's greatest--gets the career-spanning entry-point compilation it deserves with the double-disc Ultimate Collection. The songs included here are no-brainers, for the most part--if they aren't huge hits like "My Generation," "I Can See for Miles," or "Baba O'Riley," they're long-standing fan favorites such as "Boris the Spider," "Pure and Easy," and "Squeeze Box." And while this reviewer wishes different songs were chosen from Tommy, and more than one tune was gathered from their arguably finest (and definitely silliest) album, The Who Sell Out, this record really isn't for fans (aside from the total trainspotter types) but for newcomers. --Mike McGonigalCustomer Reviews:

I'm sure there are other Who compilations still available, who will satisfy classic Rock purists more than this "Ultimate". However, if you're just trying to increase your knowledge of how good British Rock became in the 1960s and 1970s, this The Who collection at no doubt will lead you to get later their entire album collection. Enjoy it!

What a compilation! Definitive indeed!.......2007-06-22
Some of the major cuts:
"Maybellene" was recorded in 1955, one of his first major hits. Talk about class: Willie Dixon played bass. The thumping rhythm and driving rock beat makes this a quintessential Chuck Berry song. This song reached # 5 on the Pop Chart, making Berry a recognizable figure.
In 1956, "Roll Over Beethoven" Another great rocker: "Roll over Beethoven and tell Tchaikovsky the news." An infectious beat and driving singing.
"Up in the mornin' and off to School,
Teacher teachin' the golden rule."
So "School Day" goes, with the expectation of a lot more fun once the School Day is done.
"Rock and Roll Music" (1957) has the estimable Willie Dixon and Fred Below supporting Berry. Another rollicking early rock song that set the stage for what was to follow.
More greats from 1957--"Sweet Little Sixteen," a teaser of a song with a compelling pace; also from 1957, one of the greatest rock songs ever--"Johnnie B. Goode." "Go, Johnnie, go, go."
A number of these songs were covered by the "British invasion." British groups, such as the Rolling Stones and Beatles, covered such songs as: "Roll over Beethoven," "Little Queenie," "Come on," and so on.
This CD contains 30 of Chuck Berry's greatest hits, from "Maybellene" to "My Ding-a-Ling." If anyone is unfamiliar with Berry's oeuvre, this is a great place to start. For those who appreciate his role in rock and roll, this is a good addition, to pull together some of his best works. A good compilation. . . .
chuck berry the definitive collection.......2007-05-07
it couldn't be better unless they removed that song

Good looking back.......2007-04-11
Chuck Berry is one of my old favorites. I danced to his music when I was a teenager. This CD contained many of my favorites from back in the day such as Johnnie B. Goode and Almost Grown. Also, some of his less known music was introduced. Havanna Moon was a surprising musical treat.
For the casual listener..........2007-04-03
"...Tidewater four-ten-oh-nine...".......2007-03-18
How can a guy come up with those riffs? Those simple, yet poetic lyrics? One of his rivals was the output of the Brill Building writers, but that was a group of enlightened kids (influenced by Berry, among others) feeding off of each others energy and ideas. Maybe the closest "rival" was Buddy Holly. Here is a poor guy from St. Louis who even pushed Presley, not to mention how he (along with Holly) inspired the Rolling Stones and the Beatles.
Bottom line: great sound, finally a great single disc overview of one of the greatest musical minds since 1950 and certainly one of the "Dead Sea Scrolls" if you are looking for the genesis of rock n'roll.

Disappointing.......2007-05-26
Unfortunately I was terribly disappointed to discover that the version presented here is a very short 2 minute and 55 second version, without the introductory chant. Luckily the version of Miriam Makeba's "Pata Pata" presented here was also one I wanted for my collection, but that's a lot to pay for one song.
As for the other sings on the disk- a few are winner, most are forgettable, and one- "Papa Joe's"- was incredibly annoying when I originally heard it on the radio, and time has not changed my opinion!

They were together just five years, and between the potent era of 1969-`71, Creedence Clearwater Revival reached the Top 10 with nine different singles, an accomplishment the band's architect John Fogerty has cracked just once ("The Old Man Down the Road") since CCR's demise in 1972. And now that the three-decade battle between Fogerty and the Fantasy label has ended, the man-and-band reunion comes full circle with a 25-song compilation that packages many of CCR's made-for-radio hits with a sprinkling of solo numbers and live recordings from recent Fogerty tours. Fogerty hasn't penned a whole lot of clunkers, and his CCR catalog sparkles with modernly remastered chooglin' classics like "Bad Moon Rising," "Travelin' Band," "Fortunate Son," "Lookin' Out My Backdoor" and "Have You Ever Seen the Rain." But the non-chronological sequencing is unpredictable, and far too many Creedence gems were left on the cutting room floor to call this package "The Ultimate." --Scott HolterFrom Amazon.ca
John Fogerty has finally made peace with his old label, Fantasy Records. One of the results of this is the first ever assemblage of his Creedence Clearwater Revival hits with his less classic solo work. The Long Road Home is a mixed bag, though. Since there are plenty of worthy Creedence hits packages, fans likely already own 14 of these 25 tracks (four more CCR songs appear in recently recorded concert versions). But there's never been a compilation of Fogerty's inconsistent, occasionally inspired solo career, and unfortunately only seven tunes from six studio discs make the cut. There are no selections from the spotty Eye of the Zombie or his first post-Creedence covers album, the excellent Blue Ridge Rangers. Only two tracks from 1975's terrific yet obscure John Fogerty make an appearance, and both are represented in spirited but inferior live performances. The Long Road Home remains an enjoyable listen, but these limitations prevent it from living up to its "ultimate" subtitle. --Hal HorowitzAlbum Description
This comprehensive retrospective features, for the first time ever, all of the songwriter's most poignant and enduring hits. Included are seminal tracks from the Creedence catalog, along with the crème de la crème of his solo work, including "Centerfield," "Déjà Vu (All Over Again)," and "Hot Rod Heart" from the GRAMMY(R) Award-winning CD Blue Moon Swamp. Also on the disc are four new tracks recorded live by Fogerty during his 2005 tour of the United States: "Hey Tonight," "Bootleg," "Keep on Chooglin'," and a blistering rendition of "Fortunate Son."Customer Reviews:

this album. The remastered sound is superb of course, but
the deciding factor on this one should be the inclusion
of their last hit, after more than 20 years had passed since
their previous one.
After the team reunited, one of their biggest fans wrote
a song especially for them. Paul McCartney wrote "Wings of
a Nightingale" for them, and it is a truly beautiful song
that displays their harmony at its best, and the song is
not usually found on other collections.
Get the best of all their classic early hits, plus this
last hit.

Saxophonist Jr. Walker was the most gutbucket of Motown's consistent '60s hit makers. Even when trying his hardest to conform to label formulas ("What Does It Take [To Win Your Love]," "Gotta Hold On to This Feeling"), he sounded like he'd be just as much at home in the backroom of a barbecue joint. When pursuing his muse in even more minimalist form ("Shotgun," "[I'm a] Road Runner," the smoky "Cleo's Mood"), he sounded like the owner of the place. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

of music.
This CD by Jr. Walker & the All-Stars has so much 'Soul' that it brings back that spirit when artist could sing and they were able to carry
a message in their songs where it made you feel good a time when artist could play instruments. To understand what I'm trying to say go to number 23 on this CD 'Way back home' I don't have
to say much more. If this CD do not move you then you don't have SOUL.

Junior Walker & the All-Stars.......2007-01-10
Great Trumpet.......2007-01-10
Consensual Sax.......2006-11-05
Even as a kid plugged into Motown I noticed that Jr. Walker & The All Stars stood apart. For one thing, the sax was up front, ahead of the vocals. More than that though, JW&TAS had an earthy, funky groove that was raw, authentic, and infectious. While the other Motown acts were going for smooth, Walker went for the down-home, house party foot stomp.
What I didn't know then was that the folks at Motown had made a conscious decision to step back and let Junior do his thing. The times they did decide to run him through the Motown mill produced his most forgettable efforts, (How Sweet It Is, Come See About Me, What Does It Take, and These Eyes.)
Songs like Shotgun, Shake And Fingerpop, I'm A Road Runner, and Pucker Up Buttercup caused uptight, suburban teenagers to leap out of their seats and be transformed by the sheer joy of line dancing. Walker's music felt good all the way down to the shoes.
No discussion of Junior Walker is complete without mentioning Cleo's Mood, arguably the sexiest, sultriest song ever recorded by anyone. He stretches the groove out in Cleo's Back, and shows it off again in the outrageously slinky Satan's Blues. Sweet!
Many obscure gems on this anthology. Tune Up is the perfect throwdown track while Twist Lackawanna is so hot it could only have been played before an intermission. Hip City, though not obscure, is wonderful to hear again. Folks, if it gets any better than this - nobody told me.

The Monkees have been repackeded umpteen times, but the pristeen version of "Daydream Beliver" is so crisp, you can hear the 6 a.m. alarm clock ringing behind Davey Jones vocals for the whole verse.
The joy of Dion & the Belmonts (Donna the Prima Donna), Jay & the American's neo-operatic masterpiece, "Cara Mia" amoung others, are in great company on board this trip down memory lane.
In addition, songs that don't make run of the mill 60s soundtracks, such as "Theme from A Summer Place" (Percy Faith), or the girl-group one-hit wonders: The Toys - A Lover's Concerto
