Quiet, initially released by Indipop in 1984, marks vocalist Sheila Chandra's departure from the pop dance-beat style of her work with Monsoon, and lays the foundation for her successive recordings. These 10 pieces of a cycle (entitled Quiet 1-10) are layer upon layer of traditional Indian instrumentation coupled with Chandra's now trademark wordless vocals. Even at this stage in her early development and musical collaboration with Martin Smith and her husband Steve Coe, Chandra's exotic voicing registers as something quite special. Not as nuanced or centered as later work like AboneCroneDrone or Zen Kiss, Quiet remains an ambitious and innovative selection in what would become world music. --Paige La Grone

It's the most complete single-disc collection of EWF chart rockers, and Greatest Hits' splendid remastering makes one of the major exponents of '70s funk positivity sound sparkling. From the driving "Shining Star" to the syncopated mastery of "September" and "Boogie Wonderland" to the slow-jam heaven of "After the Love Is Gone," this is a reminder of what made the group so special. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

With her exotic beauty and steamy voice, Sade couldn't help but be a star. Taking the more sensuous elements of island beats, smooth jazz, and R&B, Sade scored major hits with the continental feel of "Smooth Operator" and the sultry stylization of "Your Love Is King." Her voice was often criticized for being thin, yet she made it work to her advantage with songs like the haunting "Jezebel," on which her delivery added the vulnerability necessary to the song. Sade sounded best when she stuck to the lower register, and there is nothing thin about her dynamic handling of her torch song "Is It a Crime." "The Sweetest Taboo" was one of her last great moments before years of mediocrity, chronicled here by the lifeless "Stronger Than Pride" and the limp "Nothing Can Come Between Us." "No Ordinary Love" was a return to form with the smoky richness back in her vocals and the urban/island feel of her first release. Best of Sade goes right up to her hit "Pearls," which, remixed, became a dance floor hit. The nicest surprise here is "Please Send Me Someone to Love," with Sade proving that although her range may be limited vocally, she doesn't suffer the same fate artistically. --Steve GdulaCustomer Reviews:

Pure Pop Culture..Cashing In On "Disco" Revival Of The 90s.......2007-04-16
Where's Cerrone "Supernature", Giorgio "From Here To Eternity", Alec R. Costandinos "Romeo & Juliet", Machine "There But For The Grace Of God Go I", Jumbo "Turn On To Love" and could go on and on (probably 90% of the folks reading this right now dont even know what those tunes I mentioned are).
Those tunes I mentioned are basic common club play disco from back when...im not even goin mega deep here, just mentioning a few of the REAL disco bilboard hit basics here. Sure, to promote the pop hits, most of these tunes on this comp were played in the corse of the night in 12" remixed format...but they were not the main attraction as pop culture believes!
If anyone is truely interested to hear what disco was really about and wants to get a small taste of the hard true disco sounds, if you can find it (since its out of print), look up the CD comps The Best Disco In Town vol 3 (whole CD) and The Best Disco In Town vol.2 (75% of this CD is true disco) put out by the now gone Hot Productions...there you'll get a small taste of the REAL disco hits from the 1976 - 1980 era which kept everyone dancin and havin fun (with a few early 80s ones thrown in). Forget this pop culture cash in on what the radio mainstream called disco (and if this is what disco really was, I wouldnt blame em one bit for the whole disco sucks movement...but this IS NOT REAL DISCO!).
Like I said, I DO give em credit for putting a few tracks on here that actually were REAL club hits and not on every pop comp (Gibson Brothers "Cuba" is the main one that stands out). But don't take my word for it, seek out the 2 comps I mentioned above and hear for yourself!

Amazon.com's Best of 2000
Jill Scott's debut, Who Is Jill Scott?, is a luscious portrait of the artist as a grown woman. In R&B, black femininity has often been reduced to two dimensions: sex and materialism. But Scott lives in 3-D, and it shows in her voluptuous songwriting. She combines a beautiful voice with an extreme generosity of spirit, making her music a dreamy, soulful delight. Lizz Mendez BerryAmazon.com
Jill Scott is the singer-songwriter who wrote the unforgettable hook on the Roots' "You Got Me." Jill Scott is a better singer than the garble-mouthed Erykah Badu, who mangled those lines (albeit prettily) on the Roots' single. If Scott had sung them (which she does, and marvelously so, on the group's live album, The Roots Come Alive), we would have known what the hell the words were. Thankfully, Jill Scott has put out her own album, which exceeds all hook-derived expectations. She is, in fact, a wonder--a magically soulful tunesmith who writes tunes like "The Way" and "Watching Me" that feel as comfortable, warm, and sexy as Al Green on a cold day. And then she rips into the songs' haunting melodies with a gorgeous honey-crisp alto that'll leave you wanting more. --Sylvia W. ChanCustomer Reviews:
Who Is Jill Scott? Words & Sounds, Vol. 1.......2007-07-21
This is a disc that still gets constant play in my house, in the car & at work! There was such a huge buzz on Jill Scott prior to the release of her debut that I could not wait to get my hands on it. Every song & interlude just flows so magically into the track making this not only one of the best debuts by any artist but also one of the best "neo-soul" albums ever produced so those who still don't know who Jill Scott is but enjoy good music will not be sorry in adding this disc to their collection.
My fave tracks to this day are: THE WAY, I THINK IT'S BETTER, WATCHING ME, ONE IS THE MAGIC #, HE LOVES ME, IT'S LOVE & HONEY MOLASSES. Another honorable mention goes to LOVE RAIN (although I like this version very much, I adore how she switched it up on her live cd).

In the path of enormously popular collections of number one singles by Elvis and the Beatles comes this crammed (seconds shy of the 80-minute mark) disc from another pop-culture icon, Diana Ross & the Supremes. 14 Diana Ross/Supremes tracks appear in some of their most vivid sound ever, while the post-Ross Supremes get their due with "Stoned Love." Ross' Hollywood years make for the weakest music here ("Touch Me in the Morning," "Endless Love"), but disco smashes "Upside Down," "I'm Coming Out," and "The Boss" prove as smart, canny, and enduring as Supremes 45s like "You Keep Me Hangin' On" and "Reflections." The contemporary, yet already dated, remix of "Hangin' On" at album's end suggests, in fact, that Ross might make one more dance-floor comeback if paired with the right behind-the-scenes team. Amazon.com essential recording
Four years after her return to recording after a much-publicized battle with drug addiction, Natalie Cole found herself unexpectedly experiencing a virtual reinvention as a bestselling artist and performer, thanks to a project she had longed to do for many years. Unforgettable with Love was the soulful singer's way of paying tribute to her late, legendary father, Nat "King" Cole, and marked her label debut for Elektra Records. Cole, Elektra, and the album's producers--including then-husband Andre Fischer and Tommy LiPuma--were rewarded with a multiple-Grammy-winning set that sold an astonishing 5 million copies in the U.S. alone. Cole's selections varied from obvious choices like "Mona Lisa," "Nature Boy," "Route 66," and "Straighten Up and Fly Right"--all major hits for her father in the '50s--to more obscure parts of King Cole's repertoire, such as "Avalon" and "Non Dimenticar." The crowning glory was a "duet" with her father, electronically created using his original vocal, which helped expand Cole's audience dramatically and took her career to a new plateau. --David NathanCustomer Reviews:
The apple most definitely doesn't fall far from the tree!.......2007-06-20
Cole is very effective singing the standards made famous by her father and realizes that his stamp is emblazoned on most of them. She never tries to imitate him, just offers her own spin on such gems as "Mona Lisa," "Smile," "Straighten Up and Fly Right," "Nature Boy," and "Our Love is Here to Stay."
Of course, no musical collection would be complete without the landmark and one-of-a-kind (at the time) pairing of father and daughter on "Unforgettable."
The song is just as the title says and worthy of the praise it has garnered since its release.
I can't believe that I didn't buy this album sixteen years ago.
Where was my brain???
Unforgettable.......2006-12-03
The CD starts off with the romantic "The Very Thought Of You;" this simultaneously suggests that Natalie is thinking of her father as she introduces the CD with this first song. The next two songs, "Paper Moon" and "Route 66" pick up the pace somewhat and Natalie does these songs to perfection.
Other great songs on this album include the Oscar winning, haunting ballad entitled "Mona Lisa;" the playful and joyous love song simply entitled "L-O-V-E;" "Smile," a Charlie Chaplin classic; a guy's romance song called "That Sunday That Summer;" the medley of "For Sentimental Reasons/Tenderly/Autumn Leaves;" "Our Love Is Here To Stay" and the closing grand finale, "Unforgettable," which features Natalie singing this as a duet with her late father using electronic mixing equipment.
The overall effect on your soul is guaranteed to be incredible. I also like the fact there are some of Nat King Cole's lesser known songs including "Avalon."
Look for David "Fathead" Newman to do a great sax solo on "Tenderly" and "Autumn Leaves;" Joe Sample plays piano on "Paper Moon" and "Orange Colored Sky." Great!
The liner notes include an informative essay by Roy Trakin who gets help from Natalie in her own words all along the way; and there are interesting black and white photographs of Natalie with her family when she was a young child. The liner notes also provide the song credits and there's a whopping four pages of acknowledgements and "thank yous."
This is one classy show.
I highly recommend this CD for fans of classic pop vocals, fans of Natalie Cole and fans of Nat King Cole; fans of pop R&B and even fans of R&B/Soul.
ENJOY!!!
What everyone should listen to before entering dreamland.......2006-11-06
Heart & Soulful.......2006-08-29
Tender yet soulful, Natalie Cole brings us an updated collection of her father's songs from the 50's that he would have been proud of. For anyone who loves all of those great standards, this is a must for your collection. Natalie brings her own polished style to each one of these classics.
The opener "The Very Thought Of Your" is a sweeping ballad. "Smile" is a grand tribute. "Lush Life" is just that.....lush! "Avalon"s uptempo arrangement is the perfect backdrop for Natalie's vocal. "Nature Boy" is tenderly sweet. The duet of Nat King Cole and Natalie Cole is a classic that will live on forever.
Buy and enjoy!
MUSIC 101 FOR YOUNG "MAROONS".......2006-03-19
From the dreamy, shimmering strings that open this album, to the unforgettable duet between Papa Cole and his talented daughter, Natalie, which closes it, 'UNFORGETTABLE: WITH LOVE' is a gorgeous example of recorded art. It's hard for me to believe that anyone with any musical sense could still be unfamiliar with this hugely popular set, but if you are that someone, then STRAIGHTEN UP AND FLY RIGHT: Get your copy today because it's ALMOST LIKE BEING IN LOVE!
Aside from Natalie Cole's expressive and clear as a Tiffany's crystal water glass vocals, the success of this album lies in Tommy LiPuma's production which flawlessly blends romantic ballads with flat-out joyous Swing numbers, and the updated arrangements of Nat King Cole's hits of decades past, primarily provided by Andre Fischer, Bill Holman, and the deeply soulful Johnny Mandel.
But returning to Natalie's voice: My, oh my, was this gal ever turned on by the concept of this emotional project. On the love ballads, her seductive voice takes you by the hand and pulls you down softly into a gently swaying field of clover and fragrant lavender (e.g., THE VERY THOUGHT OF YOU; OUR LOVE IS HERE TO STAY; and my favorite, THAT SUNDAY THAT SUMMER). But that voice of hers is just as capable of kicking you right in the seat of the pants when it soars through the atmosphere on the energetic Swing tunes that blast off like rockets to distant galaxies! Crank up ORANGE COLORED SKY, AVALON, ALMOST LIKE BEING IN LOVE, and THOU SWELL. You think your favorite "Alternative" band rocks harder? Think again! Yeah, it's driven by horns instead of electric guitars, but it's the same intensity, just far superior musicianship. Now you know why this Hard Rock junkie from the 1970s eventually turned to Jazz instead.
And speaking of instrumentalists: You've got Ray Brown on bass; Joe Sample on piano; Chuck Findley on trumpet; and Pete Christlieb and David "Fathead" Newman on saxophones. Folks, these are some of the best in the business!
And as if all this wasn't enough, you've got the beautifully haunting and philosophical, NATURE BOY on this set - a song that contains the poignant lyric that actually offers the true meaning of life: "The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to Love and be Loved in return."
HEY YOU! Yeah you - the doofus with the baseball cap on sideways and the untied shoelaces dragging on the ground (Gomer Pyle was the first guy to wear a cap sideways, and you look every bit as "cool" as he did).
You think "music" goes KA-THUMP!...KA-THUMP!...KA-THUMP!...KA-THUMP!? Wrong, dude. Sit down and give Natalie Cole a listen with your girlfriend beside you - the one with the gold bar through her eyebrow and the tattoo on her chest. (Man! She's uglier and more masculine looking than an AWOL sailor on a two-week binge!) This is what a soul sista with REAL talent can do, kiddies! (If I'm right, does it really matter that I'm also a music dogmatist?)
Recording her versions of her Dad's standards on 'UNFORGETTABLE: WITH LOVE' was obviously a very sentimental project for Natalie; the album tugs at my heartstrings, too. It was a birthday gift from my Ma (may she rest in Peace), and it contains the bittersweet, SMILE - the first song my Pa used to get my attention while he was "dying" in the hospital. Since his "death", he has contacted me innumerable times by using the music of Nat King Cole. (No, your loved ones don't really "die", and yes, they can reach you if you're paying attention with Faith.)
Accompanying the CD is a booklet with 8 neat photos and extensive liner notes that include Natalie's lovely acknowledgment of God's blessings in her life. [*Very cool, Cole!] I'd have given this album 5 Stars, but the great music comes to an end every seventy-three minutes and fifteen seconds.

Whether with the groundbreaking group Rufus or on her own, Chaka Khan has one of the most distinctive and influential voices in R&B. She's able to wail at full emotive throttle or deliver a love song with nuanced jazz-inflected tones, and sometimes even do both within the same track. This 1996 collection gathers some of Khan's biggest and most beloved solo efforts. Included here are the classic tangy attack of "Ain't Nobody" and the turntable-enhanced smash "I Feel for You" (penned by admirer and recent collaborator Prince). There's also the anthemic original version of "I'm Every Woman," the moody "Through the Fire," and her 1996 collabo with Me'Shell Ndegeocello, "You Never Miss the Water." As all great vocalists do, Khan takes control of every song, breathing fire and life into the words and interpreting them without overpowering their meaning. One listen to Epiphany and it's abundantly clear that, even though she's been AWOL from the charts for a while, Chaka Khan remains a founding mother of soul and funk, armed with a potent voice that can both illuminate and elevate. --Amy LindenAlbum Details
Japanese Release featuring a Bonus Track.Customer Reviews:
For the first song alone, it's worth it!.......2007-06-15
I chose to revisit Ms. Khan when I heard she did an album of standards that was well-received. I don't have that one yet, but I'm definitely encouraged to buy it because of the material on this CD. At $8, it was hardly a big risk. Now I'm hoping Vol. 2 has the other song of hers I'm familiar with and love, her duet with Steve Winwood!

Everyone talks about a track which is missing which should have been on the album. Really a double disc release would have been better for Chaka, but you will love this. A double disc would have included tracks from her 1982 self titled album which is super rare, released on CD only in Japan as well as Clouds, and possibly my favorite track from Chaka which appears on the Beverly Hills 90210 soundtrack feat Michael McDonald "Time To Be Lovers". This is easily the best option for a casual fan as it has the main hits on it and even though it's a compilation, it flows very well and doesn't seem dated even though most of the tracks are from the early 80's.
