5 out of 5 stars LEGENDARY ICON OF SONG~BRAVO JERRY! .......2004-03-22

If Jerry Butler only had one hit and it was "For Your Precious Love", he would be a Soul Legend!! But this master had classic's like "Moon River", "He Will Break Your Heart", "Let It Be Me" (a truly brilliant duet with the late and great Betty Everett),and countless other classic hits such as the ones in this tasty sampler! Talk about overlooked classic's, I would most definitely put Jerry Butler at the head of that list and when anyone who love's great singing gets into this collection they will feel the same way!! Grammy and Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame let's get it together!!!!! This is a master and this collection of classic's such as "Only The Strong Survive", "Moody Woman", "I Dig You Baby", the mesmerizing "Mr. Dream Merchant", the soulful "Lost", and the masterful "Hey, Western Union Man", all make Jerry Butler one of the greatest ever!! Get this and for sure you will seek out other great works from this Legend!! Look at all of the "out of stocks" on this great singer and act fast!!!! Smoldering glorious tones and deeply passionate emotion made this wonderous talent a once in a lifetime experience!! Bravo Jerry!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Queen of Country.......2005-10-07

I am impressed with the "20th Century Masters" series of Country Music, and this is a real fine collection of the purest voice of country music. Sure, there were many other songs which could've been included here, but this is a fine sampling; and they are well mixed. I have had the good fortune of hearing many of Kitty's albums on their original LP's while growing up, and the clear sound of the CD actually surprised me. While the album obviously covers Kitty's response to Hank Thompson with "It Wasn't God....", the two finest tracks here are "Searching" and "Heartbreak USA". I would love to see many of her original LP's rereleased on disc; Lord knows we need it with today's offering coming out of Nashville. Buy the disc (and dont be afraid to purchase others in this 20th Century Masters series...they are good). After watching CMT and GAC, it's refreshing to harken back to the days when ladies had real class.

    3 out of 5 stars Budget-priced collection of Country's queen.......2002-06-30

As the first real female star of country music, Wells holds a special place in both its hit-making history, and as a primary influence on the female voices that followed in her footsteps. Her first hit, 1952's "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky-Tonk Angels," not only provided a lyrical rebuff to Hank Thompson's "The Wild Side of Life," but staked out a feminist viewpoint that had never been heard in country music before. Her other answer songs, and hits like 1959's "Mommy for a Day" (written by Harlan Howard and Buck Owens) found their voice in Kitty Wells, detailing the emotional travails of a woman's life, and opening the door for Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette and others.

By the mid-60s, Wells' hardcore fiddle-driven backings found moderation in the Countrypolitan sound, but her uncompromising hillbilly twang still shone through. Even the backing choruses of "Heartbreak USA" and "Will Your Lawyer Talk to God," and the double-tracked vocal of "You Don't Hear," couldn't dilute the emotional strength of her songs or the Southern roots of her singing. Though late-60s radio had moved on to smoother crossover material, Wells remained a very popular concert attraction.

MCA/Decca's collection focuses on Wells most productive years at Decca, covering 1952 through 1965. These are original recordings, produced by Owen Bradley, and digitally remastered for CD release. (Several other domestic collections, including Tee Vee Records' "Twenty Greatest Hits" and Step One Records' "Greatest Hits, Volume 1" and "Greatest Hits, Volume 2," feature re-recordings, and are recommended only to completists.) The selections, like the "Country Music Hall of Fame" collection, are weighted towards ballads, but unlike the HoF disc, this anthology includes a pair of fine Red Foley duets, "One By One" and "As Long as I Live." Newly penned liner notes from Joseph F. Laredo provide a quick career overview.

The only way to gather a more complete Kitty Wells catalog on CD is to pick up import releases. Edsel's "God's Honky Tonk Angel: The First Queen of Country Music" offers up 25-tracks, and Bear Family's "Queen of Country Music" provides four packed CDs. In both cases, be prepared to pay import prices. Those looking for a simple introduction to the queen of country music will find this twelve-track budget-priced sampler a fine overview.

5 out of 5 stars Bien hecho, mis compadres de Venezuela!.......2004-06-10

Though, Adolescents Orquesta has been called the Menudo of Venezuela, there is really a lot more to them than meets the eye. This talented group of young men really deliver! Their style is best described as smooth, sophisticated and classy. What sets them apart from the sea of salseros and salsa ensembles out there (which come a dime a dozen) is their "big band" sound. The big, brassy horn section and their subtle vocalizations is beautiful and understated. From "Anhelo," to "Me Nego," to the "Mega Mix" at the end, you will definitely want to get up and dance! I hope these men continue to make music together because they truly have a beautiful thing going on.......

5 out of 5 stars And the Band Rocks, Too.......2004-05-24

Los Adolecentes is a group that my son and I can always agree on. I bought a better sound system and woofers for my car, just so that I can better appreciate the intricacies of the background instrumentation of great bands such as this. The sax deep in Personal Ideal (Me Tengo Que Ir) is swinging in the back.

Adolescents Orquesta -I love listening to them because both the voices and the music are very involved; which gets me involved. They prove that you can have musical emotion without the unnecessary drama that is a hallmark of the untalented.

5 out of 5 stars UNT Wind Ensemble is Phenomenal.......2007-01-04

This is a very professional group that makes consistently superb recordings. As a student I had the opportunity to participate in a few music clinics with Eugene Corporon and they were always wonderful experiences. I absolutely respect his work and the musicianship of the UNT wind ensemble and hold them both in the highest regards.

4 out of 5 stars Exceptional Klavier release.......2000-05-22

The Klavier Wind Recording Project, already preparing to release its twenty-second and twenty-third discs this autumn, has produced a wonderful collection of contemporary music for band in addition to identifying several important pieces of the standard repetoire. This particular 1998 release, while full of interesting music, likely only holds appeal for the so-called "band aficionado." The selections on here constitute one of the darker Klavier releases to date, containing music of a somewhat more somber nature.

Opening with Carnegie Mellon-based composer Nancy Galbraith's brighly orchestrated work about mischievous elfin beings, "Danza de los Duendes" provides an excellent opener somewhat reminiscent of John Adam's writing. From there, the title track, Walter Mays' 1996 award-winning "Dreamcatcher" follows. The work, dealing with the Ojibwa belief about the nature of good and bad dreams features quotations of an actual Ojibwa folk tune in many of its melodic motives. Leslie Bassett's 1985 commission to compose a lullaby specifically for band, in particular, for the the conductor's newborn daughter, Leslie, utilizes the composer's "trademark compositional technique." More specifically, a non-serialized twelve-tone method. While the only other Bassett work that I am personally familiar with is his trombone quartet (although he has written a considerable body of music, including the Pulitzer Prize-winning "Variations for Orchestra"), I still remain unimpressed with the very brief "Lullaby for Kirsten" despite repeated hearings.

Another Pulitzer Prize-winner, Eastman-faculty member Joseph Schwantner, and his ethreal "From a Dark Millenium" provides one of the true high points on this album, although I must agree with a previous review about its disappointing sonics. As in his other two works for wind ensemble (also available from Klavier), the piano contributes a very interesting timbre to the already varied band palette. David Gillingham's 1996 "Waking Angels," inspired by Olga Broumas poem on AIDS, "emanates the mysteriousness, pain, and ruthlessness of the disease...through the imagery of music." Prefaced by Will Thompson's "Softly and Tenderly, Jesus is Calling" (of which Gillingham derives some melodic motiff), the work is very interesting and wholly satisfying. Gillingham, currently on the faculty at Central Michigan, is enjoying growing popularity for many of his band works. To conclude this disc, German-composer Rolf Rudin's two-part "Der Traum de Oenghus," based on an Irish fairy tale dealing with nightly visions and dementia (in keeping with the overall theme), with its shimmering introduction, violent (and sometimes martial) middle sections, and quiet closing pages provides a very satisfying finish to this Klavier disc.

The North Texas Wind Symphony under Corporn turns in polished performances, at times full of warthm and brilliance. Technically clean and with good intonation, this disc highlights exceptional wind band literature that would otherwise wait years to be recorded. Recommended for serious band enthusiasts or those simply interested in finding band music of a less "oom-pa" oriented nature.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful music and wonderful recording.......2000-01-08

I am a huge fan of the Klavier Wind Recording project and this is one of the best CDs yet released. There is a nice balance of works here that center around a common theme. From the bright sound of the Galbraith work to the dark and ponderous "From a Dark Millenium" by Joseph Schwantner, this CD has much to offer its listeners. I am always amazed at the fact that these are college level musicians and not professionals. Everything is technically precise and at the same time very musical and the recording is clear and very well balanced. This is can said for all of the recordings in the series as well. I wish Corporon and Klavier all the luck and hope they continue to deliver such high quality music.

Once again, Corporon's integrity shines through with this effort, a worthy addition to his numerous wind symphony recordings. I must disagree with the criticism of the Schwanter in the previous review. From a Dark Millenium is not titled "For Percussion" like the other mentioned piece. The balance is probably intended to make sure that every line in the music is heard. It is still loud enough to shake the trunk of my car. Overall, the recording deserves much accolade.

      Hahahaha,
Oh, Riggs. What the hell? I bought this album strictly for the reason Zombie wasn't in it (sorry Rob). Shadowing the footsteps of the great white zombie himself, SOTE, freaking tripped over its own feet... So I know what your thinking, why the hell did you buy it if it isn't that great. Well kids, that's what I do! I buy crap! Then I come here to write about everything that doesn't have to do with it, and basically tell you to check it out for yourself, so you don't have to follow everyone else, and can stand up, grow some balls and make your own decisions rather then reading what everyone else says and decide after that. I mean come-on, how are you ever going to like or dislike things, if you're constantly taking someone else's opinion rather then finding out for yourself? (Slowly stepping down off soapbox) Seriously folks, I pop this CD in every now and then to get a little something different. How different you may ask? Well, listen for yourself. Better then any of Zombie albums?? Nah. How about better then the NEW Zombie album? Nope. So what then? Just a little change of pace, that's all. Think of it on the lines of Blood... Different people same blood. Different bands... Same sound... And to me. It's all GROOVY.

A very good album. 2 songs are slow, but over all very good.

3 out of 5 stars Cool, a new Zombie album. No wait a minute........2006-07-19

Well the ghouls have moved on without their master. Scum of the Earth is basically Rob Zombie's old band, and the question being has Riggs and the Tempstra brothers produced a good album? My answer is yes, for the most part. I'm not really sure why they left Zombie. From what people have said they basically got tired of waiting for Rob to finish with his directing work and they decided to move on with their own band. Can't say I blame them

At first glance the artwork on the album cover looks just like a Rob Zombie record. Then one turns the album over and the song titles look just like songs from a Zombie album. Moreover, when the cd is played I had to double-check the band listing because at first I thought I was hearing Rob singing. No actually Riggs is on lead vocals, well he certainly learned a lot from his old partner. As whole I enjoyed this album. I have been a fan of Rob Zombie for years, so I do think this record rocks. With that being said, it's biggest flaw, but yet it's strength is the album sounds too much like Zombie's work. If one is a fan of Rob Zombie's music he or she should enjoy this record.

Because of the record's close similarity to the other Zombie releases one has to compare the two. Which brings me to the conclusion that it is not as strong as most of Rob or White Zombie's work, maybe except for "Educated Horses". This not to say it's not good. This album does continue more in theme of "Sinister Urge" and "Hellybilly" Deluxe than "Educated Horses". In my opinion I don't like either album more than the other. They both have their strong and weak points. Actually, if one combined the best aspects from both, there would be one heck of strong album. This tells me that Riggs played a bigger part in Zombie's music than I thought and the two need to reunite! Only time will tell.

5 out of 5 stars just what i was looking for.......2006-04-13

3 out of 5 stars Almost just one more GN'R Tribute.......2007-07-28

Hi, first nothing sorry for my english!
I have about 5 GN'R Tributes and this one is nothing special, it's the nearest to the songs, talking about the way that they sound.
The best songs, for me, of this album are Sweet Child O'Mine and Patience. The first one because is performed by people who was part of the Guns N' Roses' history, like Gilby Clarke and Tracii Guns, but the song is the same and doesn't have too much change. I liked Patience because is sang by a woman (Jasy Andrews) that had a very sweet voice and the song sounds too smooth and cool; it's a pretty good variation of the original version.
Besides, I recommend you, if you wanna hear more GN'r tribute: "Bring you to your Knees", specially November Rain; "String Quartet Tribute to GN'R"; and "Lose Your Delusions", specially (and just that one) Don't Cry.
      A hug from Chile!

The theme to the latest Godzilla adventure sounds halfway between a classic monster motif and heroic fanfare, which appropriately reflects the constantly shifting role of Japan's favorite giant lizard. After all, one minute he's threatening to crush Tokyo under his giant frame; the next, he's saving the populace from alien intruders. (Of course, Godzilla inevitably crushes Tokyo while saving it--there's irony for you.) For this film, composer Takayuki Hattori (who also scored 1994's Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla) refreshingly opts not to overdo the action scenes. Despite the occasional, clichéd use of string and brass crescendos for dramatic effect, pieces like "The Self Defense Force Swings into Action" are unusually understated. Considering the bombastic onscreen carnage, this makes for a striking contrast. Most memorable on the Godzilla 2000 soundtrack is the unconventional music--the tribal drumming insinuated into the anxious orchestrations of "Giant UFO Approaching" and "Before the Explosion"; the soothing, hypnotic tones of "Wonder of G Revealed"; and the wonderful, modern rendition of Akira Ifukube's classic, "Godzilla's Theme." Tohophiles will also appreciate the inclusion of Godzilla and Orga sound effects from the film. --Bryan Reesman

4 out of 5 stars A lush score suitable for The King........2001-10-13

If Akira Ifukube (whose driving Godzilla theme was added for the American release) can be considered the Japanese equal to John Williams, then Takayuki Hattori is its John Barry. Hattori made his Big G debut with a lush and beautiful sounding score for Godzilla versus SpaceGodzilla. His work on Godzilla 2000 Millenium is equally lush and beautiful, calling to memory some of Alan Silvestri's work on The Abyss (which this score is superior to). Sound effects (mainly the roars and snarls of the monsters as they duke it out) are an added treat. Recommended.

      5 out of 5 stars A Great Soundtrack........2001-07-30

The music to the movie Godzilla 2000 is spectacular. However, this is not Akira Ifukube's music ( besides the original Godzilla theme ). This CD also has the sound effects of Godzilla and his enemy, Orga. This music is much different from other Godzilla music because it uses an orchestra for the music. A joy to listen to. Buy now.

      4 out of 5 stars A well-done Godzilla score.......2001-04-09

One of the essential elements to a Godzilla movie is a rousing score, and Takayuki Hattori delivers a solid set of musical cues for "Godzilla 2000: Millennium." While I don't think "G2K" surpasses the best of the classic 'Zilla scores, this is still a very good CD.

In the film, legendary giant monster Godzilla does battle against a mysterious UFO, and then against a vicious monster. Hatori's score captures the excitement of the big battle scenes, as well as the human drama that takes place in the shadows of these titanic clashes.

Some of the best tracks on the CD include the opening track, which includes Godzilla's roar; the militaristic "The Self-Defense Force Swings into Action"; the gentle "The Wonder of G Revealed"; the exciting "Before the Explosion"; and the thrilling fanfare of "Millennium."

Hattori sometimes uses choral voices and other elements for an ethereal effect; this is a good counterpoint to the frenzied brass and pounding percussion which accentuates the excitement level elsewhere. These two musical strategies are particularly well-combined in "The Encounter with the Mysterious Object." Overall, Hattori has done an admirable job of contributing to Godzilla's decades-old musical legacy.

      5 out of 5 stars GREAT CD!!!!!!!!!!.......2000-08-28

This was a great CD, but I think I could live without the songs on the CD with those people wailing. I love the Wonder of G revealed and Godzilla:Dreaded God. Orga;Irony of Fate is really good too. This CD is really good, even though most of the music isn't in the US released movie. This Cd is a must have, and has some really good songs
